American Afternoon with Sam Seder – Monday May 5th 2008
Air America’s 3-6pm et time slot welcomes back Sam Seder. Sam’s HOUR ONE Guest will be Philippe Sands. Sands is a British Queen's Counsel at Matrix Chambers, and is Professor of International law at University College London. Sands is notable for authoring a book, "Lawless World", where he accuses US President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair of conspiring to invade Iraq in violation of international law. In May 2008 his follow-up book, titled "Torture Team: Rumsfeld's Memo and the Betrayal of American Values" will be released.
Finally, the HOUR THREE guest will be Laurence O’Donnell. O’Donnell is widely known as an outspoken television political commentator, and was the Democratic Chief of Staff of the United States Senate Committee on Finance from 1993 through 1995. In 1992, he was Chief of Staff of the United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. O'Donnell made himself a key figure in the coverage of the Valerie Plame scandal by naming Karl Rove as the primary source for Matt Cooper's story. He is well known for his strong dislike of California's current governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As a retired counseling psychologist, I find Seder's style of response to callers who disagree with his points one of the most respectful and reasoned that I have heard. Its a refreshing contrast to the reich-wing name calling which rarely rise above ad hominem attacks. I hope AAR can provide Sam a five day a week slot on 'American Afternoon.' He could be good for the nation's mental health since reason is a potential antidote for unreason and hate.

By demwordsMay 5, 2008 - 3:46pmFinally! A SMART programming decision from AAR!!
To everyone in management and programming at AAR:
I'm a registered member for 3 years and 51 weeks but was an avid AAR listener and fan since minute #1 on day #1.
I have, however, been rendered aghast and livid by those famous AAR bonehead programming gaffs that have come up every few months. (Oh, and trying to power-play Randi into altering her contract and LOSING HER by inhibiting her free speech was just the icing on the cake. Talk about killing your Golden Goose...)
But here's your chance to redeem yourself: Randi, Rachel, and SAM were your three best talents, and as much as I love Randi, I love Sam equally and have often thought he has been grossly underappreciated and under-utilized by the programming boneheads up there and has conducted himself with class and professionalism throughout.
Well, I'm a huge Randi fan, and you have actually found a way to make me tune away from her--and Nova M--today and back to AAR. Love Randi, but I'm in the mood for a Seder Show today and happily tuned away from Randi to hear him instead.
Keep it up, give Sam a daily spot--and treat him like the great talent he is--and I may turn out to be one loyal listener that you HAVEN'T managed to piss away.
Not sure which format Sam would prefer long-term, but I'm particularly eager to hear how Seder and Maron play together in this slot later in the week. (Also sorely missed Maron when you geniuses gave him the premature axe in favor of, ahem, Jerry Freakin' Springer.) If they play well together without Maron stomping on Seder's informative, investigative momentum, this high-talent combo may well be your best bet yet.
I'm listening closely, and you're quickly running out of chances to get this right. Randi's still at Nova M waiting for me to tune back to her.
Oh, and that random wheel of celebrities who couldn't do a coherent radio show at gunpoint--that has GOT TO STOP NOW!!!! Name recognition only gets listeners for the first 5 minutes if they suck. And, believe me, I gave everybody you threw at me an honest, optimistic try---(but only for the first 5 minutes, because, well, they sucked.)
Seder. Daily. Well-paid. NOW!!!
Thanks,
Ken

Quite right, Marc Maron was the initial reason I started listening to AAR, even getting up early to listen to Morning Sedition. His comedic style and strength was unique on AAR, and still would be. I wish he were coming back permanently.

I couldn't listen to RR - - although she had an excellent memory and quite good analytical skills at this commentary game, I found her crass most of the time that her deeper layers showed through: calling herself a "black woman" and gay men "the gays" (while reminding us almost every time that she liked the gays but please don't talk to her about "the" gay sex, with a maybe-Yiddishe-NYC accent, unless I am mistaken). She was confusing because I didn't know to whom she was pandering and to whom condescending. I didn't understand why so many listeners (supposedly) found her fascinating. And then she would go off on someone while I sat silent, trying to decide why she was angry, what decision she had made about the caller, when I had heard no offense offered.
On the other hand, Seder is intelligent, like Maddow, and both of them wear political correctness as comfortably as their own skin, not a baudy, flashy and tasteless costume worn for audio-only broadcasts.

please remember you are a radio station. Not a celebrity vaudeville. The fill in hosts for randy rhodes the last couple of weeks have been quite painful to listen to, the most atrocious being roseanne barr, with her quacky voice and gossipy tone - but the whole idea of a celebrity carousel is truly offensive. These people may be celebrity in something or other, but none of them were good at radio
Now with Sam Seder you have a true radio professional - one of the best - a gem that frankly sometimes I wonder may even be too good for air america, but hey, if you give him a daily slot I'll listen, I'll renew the membership I cancelled when you cancelled one after the other all my favorite shows breaking my heart over and over again each time(MorningSedition,Mike Malloy, the majority report, too many sorrows to even want to dwell on them)
Looking forward to the next few days of Sam! I hope against hope that somehow AirAmericaRadio will make the right choice and give Sam the platform he deserves: a solid three hours daily!

Sam Seder is the best Air America has - it is beyond understanding that this is not obvious to the station management. Please, please, please give Sam the Monday to Friday in the 3-6 timeslot. The other "guest hosts" have been abysmal. I haven't been able to listen to any of them for longer than 5 minutes. People don't tune in for celebrity, they turn in for great radio and Sam Seder is great radio.
Sam said on Sunday that his Sunday show is only on the air for a few more weeks - if Air America doesn't act NOW, I have a feeling Nova-M is going to be getting one more top show - Sam Seder - to add to its roster.

By Fernando37vMay 5, 2008 - 7:56pmIt's a No-Brainer -- Sam Seder -- 3 - 6 p.m., Monday - Friday
Air America Radio, give your listeners what we're clamoring for: Sam Seder FIVE DAYS A WEEK! While I don't have inside knowledge, I'm willing to bet that there has been more feedback in Sam's favor than for any of the other hosts you've put in the 3 - 6 p.m. timeslot.
Sam was on fire today. It amazes me how he can sound so upbeat when he is treated so shabbily by AAR's management. Sam is a special talent who teaches through his humor. He's also gracious and never mean-spirited. With Sam, AAR would never have to worry about the FCC coming after him or some other group being up in arms about something Sam said.
Even though I've never met Sam and have never spoken to him, I feel like he is a friend of mine. The way he engages his audience and takes the time to reply to instant messages from his fans, goes above and beyond any other talk radio host. Sam has a way of drawing you into the show and becoming a part of it, just as Marc Maron and Mark Riley did on "Morning Sedition."
Please, please, please give Sam Seder that slot. He's been loyal to AAR and this is the time to show that you appreciate that loyalty.

What a surprise. I could actually listen to AAR today. Your "guest" host is more appropriately titled a network anchor. Consider this, we are in an election year and AAR is choosing, by relegating Sam to guest hosting, to not deliver progressive or liberal views to its audience in a 5 day a week format. Maybe that is exactly what the Green strategy has been. Though I have said it before, I will say it again. Put Sam Seder on 5 days a week. For information and news desperately needed, nobody else comes close.
Listen, I love Maron, but you need both these guys to have a successful network.
After all, it's already after 8, once Olbermann is over it's time for Mike Malloy on Nova M.

Due to technical limitations at my office, I can no longer stream from work. However, should AAR decide to give Sam a weekly slot, I WILL get a satellite radio just to catch Sam and Rachael. There has never been a clear-er choice for AAR to make, if there is any desire to keep listeners. Give him the AM slot and bump Lionel to sometime that makes him easier to avoid. Or take the easy road and put him in Randi's old slot. Otherwise, AAR might as well just play taps.
Cheers!

If you're reading here because you enjoyed the show, i'm sure you're surprised by the less-than-stellar traffic here at the moment. You should know that Sam has his own blog where regular listeners post during the show (and generally hang out at all hours). As a longtime lurker there, I would like to personally invite you to stop by www.samsedershow.com either now or next time Sam's on the air and get to meet some the regulars, participate, and enjoy it. Enjoy the streaming wonder of "The SammyCam". But even if you don't post, come visit.

9AM - NOON Thom Hartmann - a good serious show that makes a good alternative to Stephanie Miller's silliness
NOON - 3 PM Sam Seder - This guy is everything Air America promised to be when you launched in '04. A good, funny, intelligent, sane alternative to Rush and Ed.
3 PM - 6 PM Lionel. You're never going to outdo Randi at what she does, so go with something very different.
6 PM - 9 PM Rachel Maddow. One of the most important voices on the radio who without a doubt will have a long and successful career. Don't lose her.
9 PM - MIDNIGHT Marc Maron. His LA show was really getting good when the plug got pulled. He's very different from Malloy and could do quite well building an early evening audience on the West Coast.
MIDNIGHT - 3 AM Jon Elliott. Once again, a good guy for the West Coast.

Listened to Sam's show today (Monday May 5) and he makes the most of three hours. He obviously prioritized the coverage in his main segments and succeeded in covering the stories which the corporate mainstream media isn't covering -- torture, 75 generals spewing Bush Administration propaganda for the ET (Eventual Truth) Effect, and election fraud, etc.

Richard Belzer was GREAT! Smart, funny and focused. A wonderful break in the post-Rhodes era. I realized I didn't try to find Randi on NovaM, and I didn't care. Belzer would make a kick-butt addition to talk radio. But on Monday there was Randi again, and she was treating it like the Second Coming. Roseanne was a pleasant surprise; I actually liked her segments last week. Seder is always someone to look for, but since I can't hook up my computer to the car I guess I'll have to endure Randi on the way home from work.
What is it with AA people? With XM people? I subscribe to XM to hear progressive, liberal voices and instead of the first hour of Rachel Maddow I get these moronic corporate talking head Bozos from MSNBC instead. I'm almost ready to cancel.

I absolutely love Thom Hartman in the morning (still don't know why Charlie is in Thom's spot on XM Radio!) because he is so sweet and knowledgeable and he really gets to the Republikans. Thom gets to them because he doesn't yell and swear at them like RR did.
Sam Seder is the same as Thom. He knows his stuff, and he can handle the right wing wackos that call him up. Sam has superb guests, just like Thom does, and Sam can interview them like no one else.
Please, please, please, make an old lady happy (LOL) and give Sam Seder his show in the afternoons. He is the best!
Oh, and would you please put Thom Hartman BACK on XM Radio in the mornings? I stream him now, but in the car I'm stuck with Charlie, so I turn the channel.
Thanks again for a wonderful Monday afternoon Sam!

By Deede4525May 6, 2008 - 8:44amSeder and Maron could save
Seder and Maron could save Air America. With Rachel appearing to be moving on to Television there's no reason anymore for me to listen to AAR.
If they got Seder and Maron back, I'd at least be listening for a few hours a day, every day, and it might inspire me to listen to other things on AAR.
I sure miss the old days when Maron had the morning show, Franken had middays, and Morning Sedition with Seder and Garofalo rounded up the nighttime. I'd listen to other shows in between those three and had AAR on almost constantly. Now? Only if I know Seder's going to be on - and/or Maron guest hosting.
I don't miss Randi on there, really. Or Malloy. I sure miss Maron and Seder, though.

By ajlaytonMay 6, 2008 - 8:58pmSam is the best! Bring back Sam 5 days!
I think it is so important to have Sam's voice on the radio, particularly in the ongoing election year. He is so informative as well as entertaining, a winning combination for radio. He is a far better fit than any of the other guest hosts. Please keep him on permanently M-F 3-6, or at least 6-9 am.

By KARENSCALESMay 6, 2008 - 9:33amSeder on Mondays
AAR has no product. They've just lost their biggest personality, they have no drive-time show (!!!), and it seems pretty clear Maddow will be leaving for television.
How's that AAR 2.0 relaunch working out for you?
Bring back Sam Seder and Marc Maron!

By CranesAreFlyingMay 6, 2008 - 10:03amI canceled my Premium AAR
I canceled my Premium AAR membership because of Randi's suspension. However, I would reconsider joining again, if Sam Seder and Marc Maron are given daily shows. They have proven their abilites, time and again, and deserve to be broadcast daily.

By Dr KathyMay 6, 2008 - 10:11amPlease give this slot to Sam
Seder is the right choice for the 3-6pm time slot. Intelligent, articulate, funny...what more do you need?

By BreddingsMay 6, 2008 - 10:42amPlease put Sam Seder and Marc Maron on the air fulltime
Thanks, AAR, for bringing Marc Maron back this week, and for putting Sam on more than Sunday, and I hope a regular daily time slot can be found for them either together (if they so choose) or on their own. I prefer them as a team, because I like their back and forth humor, but AAR seems to prefer solo hosts, so whatever it takes. Good luck Sam and Marc! And good luck to you too, AAR. I miss the days when your airwaves had humor and keen insight.

By jmichael2May 6, 2008 - 10:50amLove hearing Sammy in the afternoon
I'm very excited about this week's American Afternoon schedule. Maron and Seder make an awesome combo. Comedy with your politics is the only way to go. There's a *reason* why Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are so hot right now---it's the comedy.

I vote for Maron and Seder in the Afternoons.

By turtle_girl72May 6, 2008 - 11:13amI reinstated my subscription for one month
I gave AAR another month in honor of Sam being on this week to let AAR know he is their money maker. I do think Sam and Mark could do a great show together, but no matter what, Sam needs to be part of the solution. I am not real happy that AAR seems to be making them compete against each other, because they are both great and both deserve full time shows over the people they currently have on.

By flyfisher23May 6, 2008 - 11:14amno one else can compare
sam seder is by far the best thing aar has to offer
sorry to all other shows but its true,
I have never heard an on air personality as smart
as funny as honest and as hip.
he's head and shoulders above
any other radio personality that any other network
has to offer.
better than steph miller
better than ed shultz
better than rush or shannity
better than lionell
better than RR
To give sam the afternoon time slot 5 days a week would
be good business (and common) sense.
JUST DO IT!

By ajlaytonMay 6, 2008 - 11:24amSam should be in this spot permanently
I get AAR premium for Sam's show only, and so I can podcast whoever he's filling in for. He's the best this network has - please put him in this slot permanently!

By liberalsspeakMay 6, 2008 - 11:36amAAR needs Seder and Maron full-time
Is AAR serious about offering genuine progressive radio, or not? Will AAR drop all their best talent and drive away an audience who knows the difference between corporate shills or talentless hacks and unbought original thinkers who can also bring the funny? Does the management care at all about what we listeners want? For the last time, please bring back Sam and Marc!
