So why on earth is John McCain polling at 40-45%?
Over three quarters of Americans think this country is on the wrong track:
The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. Poll showed that 24 percent have a positive outlook for the country, while 76 percent say things are on the wrong track.
It is the lowest number on record since 1980 and the third time in four decades that the number has dropped so low.
Recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. polling has shown a steady drop in the country's mood. In April 2007, 51 percent said things in the country were going badly. A year later, 70 percent reiterated that position.
The poll questioned 1,041 adult Americans by telephone July 27-29, 2008. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
George W. Bush's approval ratings are only slightly better than the number of Americans who think we're headed in the right direction, at 30%. But with John McCain making very clear that he represents more Bush war policy, more Bushonomics, and more of the same, what are the 10% who think we're on the wrong track but are planning to vote for John McCain anyway thinking?

I suspect that Obama's
I suspect that Obama's support is much higher than indicated by the polls. For one thing, many of the people who support him have cell phones and no land lines at all. When they see a number they don't recognize on their phones, they won't answer. So many people who support Obama simply aren't being polled because they are technologically with it.
Another possibility is that the poll numbers aren't being accurately reported because the corporatocracy wants to set the stage for another stolen election...Nah, that's too much of a crackpot conspiracy theory.

I think that taxpayers in this country resent paying all the taxes while the non-achievers and losers that don't pay income taxes receive all the benefits such as food stamps, housing subsidies, education grants, etc. Nothing worse than standing in line at a grocery store while the losers in front of you with 4 stepping stone children and 2 buggies full of high priced groceries pays for their groceries with their government food stamp card while you have to scrape together whatever you have to feed your family. I am not fooled by these fake polls. Maybe the so-called educated people-in-the-know believe this crap, but anyone who's not wet behind the ears or has thoroughly familiarized themselves with the underhanded juvenile shenanigans of the Republican party when it comes to sheer unadulterated lying to the American people about anything wouldn't even consider believing these polls (esp polls and votes). Not only because they are NOT representative of how many people are unhappy about the current administration and the economy, they don't reflect any of the sentiments of other polls . This is particularly laughable in light of CNN's complete "outing" of themselves as far as "who's their daddy" after their anti-coverage of Dennis Kucinichs articles of impeachment on July 25, 08.
Not only did CNN NOT give balanced coverage of this historical event concerning the gravest concerns known to mankind, they had some twit stand up and openly laugh at Dennis and the whole event in an unmatchable condescending tone. Even their opening defies known standards of belittlement and condescension of the American public and Democratic lawmakers. "You might have thought there was big news on Capitol Hill today...." In other words if you thought this was real news you were mistaken. CNN rather than giving objective coverage went out of its way to convince people that "those people who really know anything" saw the whole situation as a big joke with no substance, just Kabuki theater. This coverage was complete with ooooos and awwwws and open laughing and complete ridicule of the event.
This not only is not how news is suppose to be presented by true journalists and true news media, but CNN is actually making no pretense that they intend to lead the American people's thinking with contemptuously childish games of complete dismissal and ridicule found most often on the playgrounds of elementary schools. Even if one is behind the Bush administration, which CNN has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt, this reaction is not natural. It represents an attitude of a person or persons who are openly and dramatically staging an attempt to have others view someone or something in a light of stupidity and unworthy of true consideration.
The Republicans that manipulate the information and the attitudes of Americans, openly at this point, know that FOX 's authority as being balanced and unbiased is a well known and exposed false front of propaganda. However, most people and many informed liberals have trusted CNN. This coverage of CNN concerning impeachment is the ultimate acid test and CNN has proved it is really the disguised servant of propaganda. Any poll from CNN is obviously conducted to serve its master, if not just an out and out lie.

these polls are out and out lies. Your comments about how news is supposed to be presented and manipulation are correct. It would be more useable if each time they publish these results they would also present more examples of previous results. I think these polls are crap. How can you take a poll of only a little over 1,000 people and decide that this is how the majority of Americans feel. That's what I call propaganda B.S..

It is possible, but these pollsters can't correctly model voter sympathies. The last several elections were completely blown for the polls. Only Zagby got close in 2006 and 2004. It was a shock to everyone that voting was so lopsided, that was not predicted even as the polling places opened. I live in another country but come in contact with American tourists by the thousands every week, tourists on cruise ships who traditionally are older, white, middle and upper middle class, the very people who would not be union members, workers, be struggling financially. These are the ones that McSame is taking for granted. Yet the talk and gossip is so one sided even the foreign tour guides, who normally couldn't care less about US politics...(they all know it is corrupt) are even talking about how much these people make fun of Bush and McSame. I have, personally, yet to hear of support for McSame. The street says Obama in 08 regardless of how hard the MSM is pushing McSame, in step with their ownership. The 4-12 %lead is misleading, real voters seem to be pretty solidly backing away from the white house and bush's 3rd term.

Actually it all has to do with basic statistical analysis. If you poll just 1,500 people, who make up a fair cross section of America, you'll get a fairly accurate result of the total population within +/- of 3%.
I forget the exact break down..... but basically, if you poll only 100 people you get a huge error, if you ask 1500 people you get that magical +/- 3%, however if you poll 10,000 people your accuracy only slightly increases, but requires polling 10X more people.
Basically polls are just mild indicators...that mean nothing unless one of the candidates jumps out with a 10-15%(or more) lead.

These polls make assumption about their samples. My perception is these assumptions are not always verified and/or valid and as a consequence the margins of error misrepresent the statistic precision.
That's even before you get to inappropriate and inconsistent data collection and dubious analysis. They are about as persuasive as a Petroleum Institute study on crude oil's ability to improve water fowl hygiene.

Obama said he would work with Republicans to form a bipartisan consensus. He said that he may do some things he wouldn't necessarily want, but he would do them for the good of the country.

The funny thing about McCain's plan to drill offshore is when the question is asked, "Where offshore?"

First, he says we will stay in a peaceful Iraq for 100 years. He forgot to say how it gets peaceful.
Second, he says we need to drill offshore. He forgot the part about finding the oil first.

You are so right. I think the plan we're on just needs to be tweeked. Let's get out the notes from Cheney's Energy task force. There were probably some really great ideas in there that just didn't get tried because the liberal media and socialists in Congress would have ruined 'em.
I'm think now that the surge has worked. We and our Iraqi partners can start getting some oil out of the area to the south and west of Tikrit somewhat.

Obama and McCain
There are a number of reason.
First, the obvious, Obama is black. That means huge sections of the country will not vote him. Many try to pretend they don't harbor racists feelings by saying, "I would vote for Colin Powell or C. Rice, but I believe it's a crock". Also, by saying he is Muslim, they can pretend black has nothing to do with their decision. "Oh, blacks are OK, I just don't like Muslims", but he isn't Muslim, "Oh, he is to me".
Notice that the right connects Obama to Wright, but no one questions that Obama's Pasteur for 20 years is a Christian. No one has said Wright is a Muslim. Would it make sense that Obama would be Muslim but have a Christian Pasteur for 20 years? Of course not.
Second, he is a Democrat. He believes it's not right for Christians to hate their own gay children. Believe it or not, many Christians simply can't believe that gays come from Christian families. I'm pretty sure they believe gays are either immigrants or a choice or spontaneously appear. They believe people spontaneously appeared, why not gays. Also, he supports women's rights and that people should help and support each other. This is gone from the Republican party
Third, there is the smart thing. There is a deep suspicion in this country of "smart" people. This is why they are called names like geek and nerd. Children have even been assaulted for getting grades that are "too" good. This is why someone like Obama, whose mother was on food stamps and who only paid off his student loans a few years ago is called "elitist". He is smart. That is a strike against him. Anyone smart automatically seems arrogant. Why? Because they are smart.
Even though Bush is the son of a president with millions and is the worst president in history, he is "one of us". McCain, son of an Admiral and grandson of an Admiral, graduated 5th from the bottom from the Navel Academy that he only go into with family connections and married hundreds of millions of dollars and owns 8 homes, is also "one of us". The fact that neither is called an "elitist" is because both are dumb.
Bill Clinton was pretty smart, but he cultivated that fake southern accent that made him sound like "one of us", someone who could fit on "Springer".
Forth, Obama has run a really bad campaign. I watched on the news that 90% of Obama's campaign ads don't mention McCain and 85% of McCain's ads talk only about Obama. As long as the election is only about Obama, he won't win. All the problems in the country and 85% of McCain's ads are about Obama. What a smart campaign.
I remember when Bush won the first time and when he started doing the things he said he would, many people were shocked. McCain says attack Iran, 100 years in Iraq, tax cuts for the rich, limit women's rights, Afghanistan doesn't matter, he isn't joking. McCain's voting record for our GIs is such a disgrace that it's simply unbelievable that Obama hasn't hit him on it. Veterans groups give McCain a rating of 20% and a grade of D- and yet, Obama hasn't spoken up. Obama feels that he doesn't want to "politicize" the troops the way McCain did by saying Obama wouldn't visit wounded troops and McCain in those disgraceful pictures walking around a Baghdad market using our sons and daughters as human shields. What a creep. Yet, by ignoring the troops, Obama doing them a disservice. A terrible one. Speaking up for them is not politicizing them. In a McCain administration, our troops would suffer much more than they have under Bush. For God's sakes, McCain's answer to the housing debacle is, "If you want to keep your home, go get a second job". This from a man with 8 houses. What does that say about him?
Fifth, there is no love affair with Obama and the press. A conservative think tank said the news is 75% negative about Obama and only negative about McCain 50% of the time. The right wing howls the press loves Obama, but that is a smoke screen. By repeating Fox talking points, the press has repeated over and over again, meaningless stories about Wright, Obama's wife, people that live in Obama's senate district, Obama's family. I don't know how many times I have heard, "Everyone knows McCain, but no one knows Obama" even though everyone knows Obama's middle name and almost no one knows McCain's. That made me go look at McCain's past. He five destroyed jets, his hundreds of millions, his divorcing his first wife and why, his extra marital affairs, his temper, his lack of any achievement except through pulled strings and marrying rich. The one thing that constantly gets shoved in our faces is that he is a "great American War Hero". Even though his accomplishment was getting shot down and being tortured. He didn't win a single battle. Go figure.

If he was a white male, his lack of credentials would have kept him out of the race.
