Yes Cons, Inflated Tires Beats Coastal Drilling

On Thursday, conservative radio host Sean Hannity claimed Obama said, "All you need to do is inflate your tires. That's all you need to do. If every American would join in this effort, of inflating one's tires, then it's all going to be fine. And we can still import 70% of our oil from Saudi Arabia. Just keep those tires inflated."
Conservatives -- lovers of childish mockery over substantive ideas -- later today are apparently planning to distribute tire gauges at an Obama energy event.
And earlier today on MSNBC's Morning Joe, conservative hack economist (who does not hold an economics degree) Larry Kudlow, a very loud advocate of coastal drilling, said of Obama's comments about tires, "That’s not really much of a policy."
No, it's not. That was Obama's point. Obama's actual comment last week was:
...we could save all the oil they're talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires, and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much.
He was decidedly not saying "all you need to do" is inflate your ties, or "my entire energy policy" is inflating your tires.
(Obama has a much larger energy plan centered on investment in renewable energy and fuel efficiency technology. Similarly, it would not be fair to say Sen. John McCain's "entire" energy policy is coastal drilling, when he is also advocating loosening regulations on nuclear power and a contest to promote battery technology.)
Obama was observing that coastal drilling would save us so little oil and so little money even twenty years from now, that you can actually save more money immediately by doing "simple things" such as keeping your tires properly inflated.
Where did he get that crazy idea? From George Bush's Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency. (hat tip: Get Energy Smart! Now!)
Their joint site fueleconomy.gov is loaded with fuel-saving, money-saving tips. Keep your tires properly inflated, for example, and you can save up to 12 cents a gallon.
Compare that immediate savings from that single tip, with what coastal and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling combined would get you two decades from now: 6 cents a gallon.
And that's being generous, because Bush's Energy Department says we can't expect any impact on prices from coastal drilling until the year 2030.
In their knee-jerk mockery, conservatives are flying closer to the truth then they intend to.
Inflating your ties does not amount to an energy policy. It's just more of a policy than coastal drilling, since unlike drilling for a tiny amount of oil, it would at least save us some money now.
A real energy policy would provide us consumers with a energy choice besides buying huge amounts of increasingly expensive oil. Maybe if conservative Senators stopped filibustering every proposal that would help provide such choices, and force their Big Oil donors to face some competition, we could get somewhere.

The oil is "offshore" stupid
McCain plan is drilling offshore for oil. When asked where the oil was, McCain said, "Everyone knows where the oil is, it's offshore".
When ask "where" offshore, McCain grew testy. He said, "You dumb*ss Motherf****r, it's 'offshore'".
Until "offshore" oil is actually found, is there any sensible reason to have a debate about drilling? Unless you intend to drill everywhere.
Ohh, insight, this is why McCain is bringing up Britney and Paris. Someone must have told him how much "offshore" there is. He is trying to distract us until he figures out what hundreds of thousands of square miles means. He was shocked to discover that a mile can be square.
Oh well, when you graduate 5th from the bottom out of 899 Cadets, everyone assumes you don't have a lot of ability at things like number counting and exploration. After all, McCain feels we should be allowed to teach supernatural and the occult as alternatives to the science of evolution.
Maybe we need to shame the repubs into getting serious
about alternative energy instead of drilling in everyone's backyard and pool for oil. How about this: Do you know which nation leads in wind energy? India. That't right, India. So, I guess the Indians are richer and smarter than we are. They have villagers building their own wind turbines to power their villages. But something like that is far too difficult and expensive here in America, right? C'mon contards, admit that India is able to do things better than we are. Admit that they are beating us in alternative energy.
the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts
While proper car maintenance and proper tire inflation is important, to imply that it is somehow better than drilling is ridiculous. No one thing is the answer...it's several different things put together...
And how many people are in that "village" you speak of?
The US needs to do everything, nuclear, solar, wind, hydro, more drilling, more refineries...all these things will reduce dependence on foreign oil, create more jobs, and help strengthen the economy....
Let's see....12.73?
I read an article recently about an Indian businessman who now runs the largest wind turbine company in the world. It got its start when a small village needed power. The villagers got together with him and they built their own wind turbine. This is now happening in many villages in India. By definition, a "village" is a small group of people, not Mumbai or Delhi. Jackass.
My sister has a small wind
My sister has a small wind turbine on her farm. It provides all of her energy and the excess is sold to the local power company.

Contards would love wind power if they could control the
wind and sell it one breeze at a time.
How is it ridiculous? Did
How is it ridiculous? Did you even read the entire article?
Lets see, 12 cents is greater than 6 cents, so inflating tires actually can save you more money... What left-wing source did this come from? Oh GWB's Energy Department and the EPA he stacked with right wing nutjobs...

That's right
drink the electric car kool-aid. What are we going to do in the mean time? Did you know that almost all trains and semi trucks use diesel fuel? It sounds like you're not aware of this by the way you're talking. Something needs to be done now and increasing the amount of oil on the market will drive down the prices. Inflating the tires was comical when Obama said it but what's really funny is the fact that you, his disciples, immediately bowed down and believed it. Wake up people. Pumping up tires isn't going to lower oil prices. And wind power is fine if you want propellers everywhere. Nuclear power is much more efficient. How long do you want to pay $4+ per gallon?
Hey, dummy!
You say ... "That's right ... drink the electric car kool-aid"
I hear, "Blah, blah, blah! WHINE!! Blah, blah, blah and blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah ... WHINE!"
"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."
George Carlin
Did you know that electric trains are very common in urban
areas and Europe? And I only mention it because YOU did. I didn't say a word about trains. Apparently you also are dumb enough to only listen to right wing idiots like Hannity about the content of Obama's speech. He didn't say keeping tires properly inflated was the only part of his energy plan. The federal government (you know, the one headed by Bush), on its own websites, promotes steps including proper tire inflation, as a way to save up to 3.3% on gas mileage. Republican California governor Arnie said the same thing last week, with repub governor Crist of Florida standing right next to him. I suppose that makes Bush, Arnie and Crist all idiots too, right?
Maybe you can answer the question that has froggy all stumped. Why would big oil want to increase production, when that will only increase supply, driving down prices and profits? You think they are kind-hearted souls who only want to help the American people? If so, you are as naive and deluded as anyone could possibly be. I say that if they want to prove their good intentions, agree to drill on the leases they already have or give them up. Give up the tax subsidies that they clearly don't need in this time of record profits. In return for getting offshore oil leases, sign ironclad contracts with the government stating that all oil and natural gas they get from offshore will be shipped only to the US, refined only in the US, and sold only in the US. If they can't agree to that, it will prove once again what we already know: the only thing they care about is themselves. The American people are just gullible fools, useful only for the money they can give to the oil companies.
These electric trains that
These electric trains that you are referring to. Where do they get there electricity from? Probably nuclear, coal fired, or oil fired plants. Good idea. Let's build more nuclear and coal fired plants.
Even better
Let's keep the power plants we have now and let Big Oil drill wherever they currently hold an unexplored lease.
Quiz time. Discuss the difference between an "asset" and a "liability" in the context of petroleum land leases.
If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error. ~~~John Kenneth Galbraith
I still have no idea why you even brought up electric trains
because I certainly didn't. I guess it's just your way of distracting me from asking you the same uncomfortable question I kept asking froggy. Guess what? I'm not distracted, so:
Why would big oil want to increase production, and hence, the supply of oil, as that would increase supply, causing a drop in prices and profits? Why would they hurt themselves financially? If they are such altruistic, kind-hearted individuals that only want to help us poor Americans, they will certainly agree to a couple of things.
1. Drill on the leases you already have on land. If you cannot or will not, let the leases expire. In return, you may drill offshore. However, you will then sign an ironclad contract stating that all oil and gas from those sites will be shipped only to the US, refined only in the US, and sold only in the US. The whole reason they say they want to drill offshore is to increase US supplies. Prove it by signing the contract.
2. Give up your tax breaks granted to you when oil was only $20 per barrel.
Obama didn't say that the
Obama didn't say that the properly inflated tires would lower gas prices or solve the energy problem. He was just observing that properly inflated tires can save 12 cents on a gallon. Compare that to the 6 cent per gallon reduction in price if we tap to OCS, which is YEARS off anyway.
The GOP is being dishonest as trying to represent that inflating tires is Obama's entire energy policy. Typical. Even the Republican governator of California made the same recommendation a while back.

Neocons are much more
Neocons are much more interested in giving our country to big corporations than they are in actually doing something to save energy.
I'm truly impressed at cons abilities
to take the most serious subject and reduce it to schoolyard babble that would embarrass a 5 year old. Maybe we should try doing the same thing with Crash McSame:
Did you hear that McCain wanted to be one of the hijackers for 9-11, but he was rejected because they felt his flying skills weren't good enough?
Obama's right! I have to agree...
I have visual proof of this! I inflated my tires properly and as I was driving I was amazed to see my gas gauge GOING UP (No I wasn't refueling).
I immediately stopped the car and fell to my knees praising the Obamessiah. Truly he must be the king of kings!
Some people should never
Some people should never open their mouths. Whenever they do, they make complete asses of themselves. You just proved that you fall in that category.
Obviously your reading comprehension skills are on par with your logical thinking skills. No wonder you're a neocon sycophant.

Geez, read the fucking
Geez, read the fucking article you nitwit! All he said was that proper tire inflation can save you 12 cents a gallon RIGHT NOW, and this new offshore drilling might reduce the price of gas by 6 cents IN FIVE YEARS or so.
He wasn't saying that this was his policy or solution to the high gas prices, he was just putting into perspective how minor the benefit will be (to you and me) from this offshore drilling. Now the benefit to the oil companies... MUCH more substantial.
Why would you support something that won't really help you, but will advance the already record profits of the oil companies?

George Carlin
I have a feeling it wash't his gas gauge that was going up
It was probably a tiny part of his anatomy that went up as he thought of all the dead Iraqis created to get that gas, and the obscene profits made in that murder-for-oil scheme. Money and death, the two big repub turn-ons.
You mean, the microscopic part of his anatomy?
Well, that could either be his brain or his winkie ... either way, it's fitting.
Why can't a Repuglicant answer one simple question ... why the push for offshore drilling? Why can't big oil drill on their already existing leases?
Suave, I ask and ask, no response. Gee, I wonder why that is ...
"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."
George Carlin
I've asked the same thing, and all I get is silence
I am willing to let them drill as soon as they either drill on all that land where they already have leases or they drop the leases. The oil companies would then also have to sign enforcable, ironclad contracts that all oil pumped from offshore would have to be shipped only to the US, refined only in the US, and sold only in the US. If they truly want to help America because they are such fine corporate citizens, I'm sure they'd jump to comply with those two little steps, right?
unexplored leases
I've heard Obama wavering on the subject of offshore drilling under certain conditions. He should tie ANY proposal to a use it or lose it clause. The repubs will vote that down in a heartbeat, but AMERICA would go for it.
use it or lose it clause
Great idea ... and they've got to keep the oil HERE.
"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."

Amazing - each and every large issue affecting us ...
and when you ask a contard, i.e. "what defines 'victory' in Iraq?" or "why doesn't big oil drill on the millions of existing acres they already have leases on?" or, the always great "why does big oil export most of the oil they DO pump here?" and, finally, the good old "I have nothing against nuclear power if it's waste is stored property; how do you plan to store the waste?" you get silence.
I'd take them a "wee" bit more seriously if they could at least answer these simple questions. But they can't so I will continue to ridicule them.

Complete Theater and Lies
Let me start with the fact that if this was such an important issue then why was it when they controlled both houses of congress and the white house did this never come up. Yet a few months before the 08 election cycle this off shore drilling becomes now or never, do or die or drill or suffer. Leaving aside the issue of the unused land already leased for drilling, just look at the fact that the USA has about 3% of the total world supply of oil and if we were to tap into every last drop we could not change the global price of crude oil. Our "friends" the Saudi's could bring the cost of oil down dramatically if they were to just increase [production which they have not done in any substantial way in over 30 years. Back in 1979 OPEC produced 30 million barrels a day and now almost 30 years later they still only produce 32 million barrels.
Next, the big lie. McCain has been running around claiming that some unnamed oil executives told him they could have oil being pumped in just a matter of months. First I would love to know who it is that is making these claims and second would love to know how they plan on doing that without stopping an existing platform from pumping where it is now. From watching a discovery channel documentary on how they design and build those platforms, that itself is a 3-5 year build out! Then you have the problem of transporting it from the platform to the mainland. How long to lay the pipeline?
The only winners on opening up more land for drilling is the opil companies as that land is an asset on their balance sheets and that only increases their profits and they seem to have more then enough of those with their last reported record profits!
Tasts like
Notice that McCain says that there was no damage from Katrina. 700,00 barrels of oil seeped out of damaged wells after Katrina, damage which was caused by Katrina.
His honesty is showing.
He also tried to take credit for Jim Webb's (Senator from Virginia) GI bill.
McShame said he has a perfect record from GIs even though Disabled Vets of America and another Veterans group gave McShame a scores of 20% and a grade if D-,
Let's see, takes credit for what he was against.
Lies about the observable truth.
Sounds an awfully lot like Bush.
If it smells like sh*t, if I pick it up and it tastes like sh*t, then it must be sh*t. Sure glad I didn't step in it. That would be like voting for McShame.
Wasn't McSame openly AGAINST the new GI bill?
And then the fucking coward didn't even show up for the vote?
"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."

NOT ONLY THAT
He and GW were against it for get this "It would lead to service members leaving the miliatary and creating a crisis in troop strengths" In other words service members would get the *&^^ out of the military and go to school, can't have smart americans walking around thats dangerous. If that was not galling enough, Bush then singles McCain out for his leadership on a bill both of them were against to try to give them the appearance of giving a damn about our troops. Meanwhile, American service members are still dieing because they don't have bullet proof vest in '08 and humvees that are supposed to detect road side bombs but don't. That alone is criminal.
Doesn't matter, Oblahma
Doesn't matter, Oblahma flipped on drilling anyway. How long will it be before he's against inflating tires?
Inflating tires will conserve oil, yes, it's true, but it is simply not enough. We drill or we import, plain and simple. Oblahma is for importing, wait, not, he's for drilling now....I think. What's his latest stance on drilling? Lol, this guy makes John Kerry look like a principled politician!
It's simple-minded thinking like that which got us into this
mess in the first place.
Answer this. If you increase supply, what happens to price? The price drops, of course. Now, as the CEO of an oil company like Exxon/Mobil, why the hell would I want to increase the supply by drilling in more places? That would increase supply and drop the price of oil, which would hurt those record profits they've been reporting quarter after quarter. What's plain and simple is that this is a scam by the repubs and oil companies against the American people. Do you honestly think they will increase the supply of oil available if it hurts their bottom line? What they really want is to drill offshore so they can try to justify the high cost of gas. They can say that pumping oil offshore is far more expensive than oil from dry land, which is true. They will sit on the leases they have on land, leases they have had for years without drilling on those tracts of land. Instead, they will preferentially drill offshore, making a spectacle of how expensive and difficult it is, all the while making sure they are keeping production down and prices high.
The fact that you and the repubs can't see this doesn't surprise me. For some reason, you think of businessmen as saints and saviors.
Yeah, toady, I didn't think you could spin an answer to that
question. Makes too much sense, so you have to just ignore it and hope it goes away. In the meantime, the oil companies are laughing at simpletons like you who really believe that they are going to help America by increasing production, even if it means the end of their record profits. I can hear the belly laughs now from the boardrooms of Mobil/Exxon, Shell, Chevron, BP and the rest.
Right now the only ones
Right now the only ones laughing are middle eastern royalty, and you guys want to keep it that way. I would rather have American companies making the money and employing people in this country, but that's just me I guess. Oh, and those nasty, evil oil companies may be making record profits (which is a GOOD THING), but their profit margin is about average.
You would be correct - Big Oil IS laughing
Because they rape the average American citizen on a daily basis ... with no consequences.
And, they're kissing Monkey Boys ass for the gift that keeps on giving ... money, money, money.
Why doesn't big oil drill on its existing land and offshore leases?
Why does big oil export most of the oil they do drill for here?
I thought big oils largest "bitch" was because they don't have enough refineries?
I'll send you a quarter, dickless froggy, so you can call someone who cares.
"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."

Do you smell that? Is
Do you smell that? Is something burning?
Libs block new drilling, more refineries, and nuclear power, and they are no longer getting away with blaming republicans for the cost of energy.
We may not be able to just drill our way out, but we sure as fuck can't just conserve our way out either. The only difference is the right are for doing everything, wind, solar, hydro, drilling, conserving, nuclear, more refineries, etc. The left is for inflating tires and pretending the problem doesn't still exist.
LOL - Just what I thought ... a lot of ... nothing.
Well, you've managed to do nothing but whine, so, technically, you've done something.
I have no problem with nuclear energy if its waste is stored properly;
I have no problem with drilling - on existing land and offshore leases;
You moron's have been bitching about refineries for ages ... what's wrong with the refineries we've already got? You can add this to the prior list you've dodged on.
Perhaps if you got your empty melon out of your ass once in a while, you'd know that the left is for alternative energy sources as well. But when there's an energy crisis, the first thing the reich-wing does is whine and snivel, "DRILL! DRILL!" Well, go for it - on existing leases.
Wanna try answering my questions instead of bitching, moaning and whining?
"I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death."

All Over
You keep talking about offshore drilling. Where offshore is it?
People that go to places like college and universities would explore first and then debate drilling. I get the impression that you would drill everywhere.
Libs don't block drilling.
Libs don't block drilling. They're saying, use those drilling sites you've already taken from we, the people, before you acquire more. Use those permissions you already have before you ask for more permissions. In other words, don't ask for seconds until you eat your firsts.
You guys pretend the only problem is unavailability of oil. We're saying, stop trying to acquire rights to PUBLIC land that belongs to ALL of us, before you use up the permission you already have to drill on land that is, in reality, OUR land. Stop pretending you don't have access to oil as an excuse to rob the US public of more of its precious heritage.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." Dwight Eisenhower
Still can't answer the question, can you froggy?
Why would big oil want to increase production, which would increase supply, bringing down prices and profits? I'm still waiting for your answer (which I know will never come, because it would be nonsensical at best).
You can't possibly be this
You can't possibly be this stupid. You act as if "big oil" was one company that controls all of the oil all across the planet and not several competing companies. It isn't a matter of how much total oil profit there is among them all combined, it is a matter of WHO IS GETTING THOSE PROFITS, I guess you must be perfectly content with middle eastern royalty getting the vast majority, I would rather have American companies getting a bigger share while putting Americans to work. Here's a clue for you, if American companies produce more here, that will mean more profit for those American companies HERE, more people working HERE, and you'll like this part, more taxes paid here.
Quit huffying, asking the same question over and over, saying it wasn't answered just because you don't like the answer that has already been provided.
In the 70s there were some 19 companies
producing oil in the US. Now there are 5. World wide it is a slightly bigger handful. So no, it is not quite a monopoly, it is merely a trust. You talk about them competing as if the were Burger King and McDonald's. There is no real competition there. Maybe if they gave up the leases they have been sitting on for decades they could be reissued to new startups and we might see some competition but now it is a farce.
Competence really scares you, doesn't it?
You can keep repeating your Official Talking Points all you like, but it won't change the FACTS. And your answers are, each and every one of them, devoid of FACTS. Want us to listen? Try FACTS.
Big Oil can drill all their unexplored leases all they want. But they don't get any new ones until the ones they have now are either in production or determined to be nonproductive. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error. ~~~John Kenneth Galbraith
Competition? You wish. Look
Competition? You wish.
Look up the word CARTEL.
We have illegal collusion between the oil companies. There is NO competition, and there hasn't been since the 1970s.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." Dwight Eisenhower
Your "answer" proves how totally clueless you are
Big Oil is a cartel. There is no competition to speak of among any of the oil producers.
How stupid can you possibly be to not understand the laws of supply and demand?????? If you increase the supply like you suggest, producing more oil, the price will drop. That means LESS profit, NOT MORE.
Now I know why Crash McGrandpa says he doesn't really understand the economy. Both of you share the same trait of all repubs, glaring ignorance of the single most basic tenet of economics, the law of supply and demand. Look it up, Einstein, and then pass on the results to the rest of your ignorant contard friends. They still believe what President Raygun believed, that if you cut taxes, which means cutting income, you'll actually bring in more money. Ronnie believed that 10-5= 20, and generations of contards still believe in that flawed math.
You're ignorance simply proves that you can't carry on an intelligent conversation about anything that has to do with business and the economy. Any more ignorant, and you could be Bush's Secretary of the Treasury!
STILL LAUGHING
I'm sure they are in those same board rooms laughing about how many American lives it cost to get those no bid contracts they just received from Iraq. Funny how only occupying forces received them. Coincidently just as those contracts are signed, we can all of a sudden start discussing a "time horizon" as if american people are too stupid to translate that into time table.
Gas is an example of a good
Gas is an example of a good that is relatively inelastic. For those who haven't taken ECON101, this means that the demand for the good doesn't change that much with price fluctuations. This is due to the fact that gas is (a) relatively necessary commodity for most people and (b) there is no real substitute to it for most people.
The only thing that keeps the oil companies in check is (a) competition (which isn't very effective since they have a virtual cartel over the market), (b) trying to maintain a decent level of PR, and finally (c) government regulation. If they were to just jack up prices for the hell of it, the public backlash would force politicians to act.
However, this war in Iraq and the general chaos in the oil producing nations in the middle east has provided a great excuse to increase prices. I'm sure what we see now with the skyrocketing gas prices is a bit of a test strategy - see what price the public will tolerate while producing relatively little drop in demand - and set the price there.
Given the fact that competition's equalizing effect on the market is muted by the cartel like behavior of the oil companies, and the fact that the instability in the middle east provides a convenient justification for jacking up gas prices, it's no surprise the oil companies are enjoying these record profits. Hence the logic behind Obama's tax-rebate funded by the windfall profit tax - give back some of those record profits to the people to help stimulate the economy (which in the long run will help every industry, including the oil industry).
So Uffdaguy is totally correct, there is no incentive to increase supply.

It's offshore
You are so right. We need to drill. So, where do we start? Or do we just drill everywhere? What if they drilled and didn't find anything? Just keep drilling until we run out of drills?
Of course, they could explore and see if there is any oil to begin with and then we could start a debate on drilling.
No, McCain says he knows where the oil is. It's "offshore". Right there "offshore".

Soaring gas prices are squeezing most Americans at the pump, but at least one man isn't complaining.
Lee Raymond's retirement package -- worth nearly $400 million -- is one of the largest in history.
(ABC News)Last year, Exxon made the biggest profit of any company ever, $36 billion, and its retiring chairman appears to be reaping the benefits.
Exxon is giving Lee Raymond one of the most generous retirement packages in history, nearly $400 million, including pension, stock options and other perks, such as a $1 million consulting deal, two years of home security, personal security, a car and driver, and use of a corporate jet for professional purposes.
Last November, when he was still chairman of Exxon, Raymond told Congress that gas prices were high because of global supply and demand.
"We're all in this together, everywhere in the world," he testified.
Raymond, however, was confronted with caustic complaints about his compensation.
"In 2004, Mr. Raymond, your bonus was over $3.6 million," Sen. Barbara Boxer said.
That was before new corporate documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that revealed Raymond's retirement deal and his $51.1 million paycheck in 2005. That's equivalent to $141,000 a day, nearly $6,000 an hour. It's almost more than five times what the CEO of Chevron made.
Supply and demand
They've got the supply and they demand 4 bucks a gallon!
It's all lies
First drilling would not provide any relief at the pump for 5 years, then it was 7, then 10 years, now it's 2030. How about this? Wind and solar power will not have an effect on gas prices until 2060 or 2600 or 3200. We all will be incinerated by then anyway by global warming. Al Gore said so. I think if we're all going to die in a fiery catastrophy anyway, lets at least enjoy low gas prices before the fireball arrives. Drill now.
No problem
But first drill the leases already in hand, and when all those are either in production or proven nonproductive, then (and ONLY then) does Big Oil get a shot at more leases.
Quiz time. Discuss the meaning of "sunk cost".

Yes, DRILL NOW where they
Yes, DRILL NOW where they already hold leases.
Oh I know, the typical Repub comeback is that there is little oil on those leases, or at least that's what the oil companies say. Really? Then why are they maintaining those leases and continuing to pay for them? Because they know DAMN WELL there is oil there, they just want to get as much real estate as possible. They'd love to tap the OCS and slowly let the oil trickle onto the world market to drag on their hugh profits. Then when those run dry, tap the current leases. That's the path to MAXIMIZING PROFITS
sunk costs - here's a hint - aka "fixed costs"
-- McCain = Four more years of the same --
They're also getting subsidies NOT to drill those leases
...or, as most of the rest of the world calls it, corporate welfare. In that context, those "worthless" leases aren't liabilities, as they should be carried on the books...they're actually ASSETS, even though that's NOT how they're recorded.
Anyone who's ever taken a basic accounting or bookkeeping class would understand the concept.

This is from Lark News, which could be best described as The Onion of mainstream Christianity:
AUSTIN — Ginny McCallum, 43, who has been confined to a wheelchair for much of her adult life, came to hear presidential candidate Barack Obama speak at the University of Texas. Afterward she found herself in a wheelchair access breezeway as Obama and his entourage exited the arena. The candidate spotted her, came over, grabbed her hand and pulled her up. She found herself standing for the first time in eleven years.
"He smiled at me and said, ‘Yes, you can,’" she says. "I was so stunned I didn’t know what to do."
McCallum is among hundreds of people who say they have been healed by the Democratic candidate, in one of the most surprising and little-acknowledged aspects of his campaign. Reporters have shied away from the story, chalking it up to "Obama-mania" and people’s feelings of elation.
"We don’t talk about it a lot, but yeah, it does happen," says one staffer who says he has seen multiple people healed on a rope line. "We don’t know exactly how or why it’s happening, and the Senator won’t talk about it. He usually insists that people keep it quiet and just report it to their pastor or priest."
Greeting supporters after a rousing speech in Houston, Obama stepped into the dense crowd and spontaneously began touching people: a legally blind woman, a man deaf in one ear, a cancer sufferer and a lame man.
"Yes, you can," Obama said as he laid hands on afflicted bodies.
The people’s reactions were so joyous as to be almost frightening. They jumped and shouted and wept. Before they could thank or embrace the candidate he was well down the rope line healing others. Their excitement was lost in the general din of the crowd.
Aides acknowledge that the phenomenon is occurring with greater frequency.
"His power goes beyond simple inspiration," says one aide. "There is something developing here that I’m not sure any of us fully understands."
They say Obama has told them privately that his time has not yet come, so it would be inappropriate to talk about the healings right now. He says he will wait until the convention to speak publicly about the "special calling" he believes he has to lead the country. They do expect him to start alluding to "the providential nature of what is happening on the campaign trail" in an upcoming address, mostly because word is getting around.
People have begun bringing relatives by the score to campaign events in hopes of a healing touch.
"It’s not the speeches that are drawing people anymore, as good as they are," says a senior staff member. "It’s people wanting to get better, and wanting their friends and relatives to get better. It’s the belief that there’s something more here."
Damn, you are dense, aren't you?
So dense that you didn't even read what it says at the top of your post:

I guess I should start posting articles about Crash McGrandpa from the Onion.
You have to be dumber than the average southern redneck if you can't even figure out something is a joke when the first line TELLS you that it's a joke. Do your other redneck buddies have to tell you something is a joke before they tell it so you don't get confused?
Reminds me of when "The Inflatable Hammer" DeLay

Drill where? In my backyard,
Drill where?
In my backyard, I guess. The oil companies have been screwing up this beautiful and environmentally sensitive area for a long time.

I think when it's in someone else's backyard, it's okay. I wish they'd just stop polluting my backyard.
