The photo above is of Henry Sylvester Williams — Organizer of the first Pan African Conference in 1906, the goal of which was to improve the lives of those of African descent throughout the diaspora. The conference was reported in the leading London newspapers. The Westminster Gazette observed that it ‘marks the initiation of a remarkable movement on history; the negro is at last awake to the potentialities of his future’. W.E.B. Du Bois was one of the attendees.
How awake are you to the potentialities of your future? It’s time to drop those links and that knowledge in the comments. Whatchu thinkin’ bout?

Are you and I really all that's left? I would suspect there are more who linger and perhaps some under different names. Some of the humor strikes me as similar. frazz swings through from time to time to be seen for some days then to not be seen for months.
Options trader? Friendly or foe? I do recall a trollish type from Fidelity.

I believe Strokes was no more than a right wing toner replacement technician.
Leftwinger was a liberal homophobe that, if I recall correctly used to occasionally become unhinged and crash the blog back in the days when a mega string could do that. My perception was leftwinger had some actual financial knowledge in its head. Strokes – that’s not my recollection.
I've seen frazz here and there. I do sometimes pretend that this blogger is that blogger. For example, Guy is almost offensive enough to be vesti.
However, since you've always been you, I just pretend your a girl on the days I feel like having a crush and a dude on the days I'm looking for a man to admire.

Oh, the days of AFB... when a moderator was kind enough to sweep up the trollshit... and sometimes take the extra minute to shove it in the troll's mouth...

I knew there was a deficiency in your coolness. And there I was about to definitively name who you formerly were. Why is it affirmative speculation so often doesn't work?
Vesti was a fan of opie and anthony as I recall
Vesti said things I wouldn't even post on a blog
Vesti was a patriot and a hero
Vesti suggested I start my own blog called "mispelt irony".
And, as I am obliged to extend suspicion and delusion backwards in time, Vesti is and was a stand-up comedian who regularly appeared on the Colin Quinn show and is/was tremendously funny on an intermittent basis.
Also, Vesti was Vestibule before one of the many participation reduction upgrades.

- Email this page
By f u bush2August 17, 2008 - 1:17pmWhat is with you and this "Hatey" person?
You seem really obsessed.
Most of you people on this blog are not true supporters of Obama, in my opinion. You don't really know anything about him, nor do you really support HIS positions. I think you just like the idea of voting for a black man. That, in my mind, is racism.
Example: How many of you support his position on Abortion?
Here's his statement, from last night. Who of you agree with him?
Q. Now, let’s deal with abortion. 40 million abortions since Roe v. Wade. you know, as a pastor I have to deal with this all of the time. \Aall of the pain and all of the conflicts. I know this is a very complex issue. 40 million abortions. At what point does a baby get human rights in your view?
A. Well, I think that whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade. But let me just speak more generally about the issue of abortion because this is something obviously the country wrestles with. One thing that I’m absolutely convinced of is there is a moral and ethical content to this issue. So I think that anybody who tries to deny the moral difficulties and gravity of the abortion issue I think is not paying attention. So that would be point number one.
But point number two, I am pro-choice. I believe in Roe v. Wade and come to that conclusion not because I’m pro abortion, but because ultimately I don’t think women make these decisions casually. They wrestle with these things in profound ways, in consultation with their pastors or spouses or their doctors and their family members.
And so for me, the goal right now should be — and this is where I think we can find common ground and by the way I have now inserted this into the democrat party platform is how do we reduce the number of abortions because the fact is that although we’ve had a president who is opposed to abortions over the last eight years, abortions have not gone down.
Q. Have you ever voted to limit or reduce abortions?
A. I am in favor, for example, of limits on late term abortions if there is an exception for the mother’s health. Now from the perspective of those who, you know, are pro life, I think they would consider that inadequate. and I respect their views. I mean one of the things that I’ve always said is that on this particular issue, if you believe that life begins at conception, then — and you are consistent in that belief, then I can’t argue with you on that because that is a core issue of faith for you.
What I can do is say are there ways that we can work together to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies so that we actually are reducing the sense that women are seeking out abortions, and as an example of that, one of the things that I’ve talked about is how do we provide the resources that allow women to make the choice to keep a child. You know, have we given them the health care that they need. have we given them the support services that they need. Have we given them the options of adoption that are necessary. That I think can make a genuine difference.

I missed it. From what I gathered through my brother, or at least his interpretation of it, was that Obama seemed to be giving really thoughtful answers during his time and McCain was clearly just like a machine trying to spit out the politically popular thing to say. One example he gave was something about McCain being asked some question that he seemingly didn't want or know how to respond to, and then belted out something about "we must drill offshore now!". I'll have to take the time to go back and watch it, I guess. Unless, of course, I read more about it like I'm reading/hearing now... which almost makes it seem like it isn't even worth watching...

The reverend askingt he questions wanted thoughtful answers. You could tell he was disappointed in McCain.
The offshore drilling answer came when McCain was asked about wisdom of age and changing points of view. (This was a nice job by the minister to dismiss the flip-flop talking point btw). I think everyone was looking for something substantive from McCain. He could have talked about dumping his first wife for instance. Or perhaps he could have talked about letting the Bush campaign rip his current wife in 2000 while he said nothing and now getting chummy with Bush. Something personal like that. But instead McCain brought up his supiid talking point.

I look forward to that.
No matter the long-winded, nuanced answering style of Obama or the talking-point-generated, one-line regurgitation style of McCain... nothing will change that simple visual presented to voters: the new changing and adapting to grow for the future VS. the old just trying to survive by repeating the past
Or... as Bill Maher so aptly put it: YouTube VS. Feeding Tube

Yes, that is how Obama responded. And I agree with all of it. Obama understands the separation of church and state. He is pro-choice because he thinks such a personal thing as abortion should be left to mother, spouse, family and doctor - not to the federal government. Yet, he understands how such a volatile subject as a potential child's life is a major concern for a large portion of the population, and agrees that abortions must be reduced. He would then, as President, find ways to help women facing the choice with support in the way of universal health care and other support services. Seems pretty logical to me. In other words - he would have a doctor or social worker knocking on a pregnant women's door, not a policeman to haul her off to jail.

By LiberalIconoclastAugust 18, 2008 - 4:20amALL THE PRESS SAYS MCCAIN WON HANDS DOWN
McCain jumped at the "answer" of every question, many times "answering" before the good Reverend even finished asking the question. He was so well rehearsed with "answers" that when a question was asked he didn't know the "answer" to, he didn't answer it.
When Obama was asked about the three wisest people he ever knew, he mentioned people he actually knew. People who shaped his life. His grandmother and his mother being two.
Who did McCain name? A CEO, a guy whose skull was fractured so he was brave, and General David Petraeus. THESE ARE THE THREE WISEST PEOPLE HE KNOWS? Does he know the meaning of the word "wise". Obviously, he memorized a different answer.
What's worse, Petraeus said the central front against al Qaeda IS IN AFGHANISTAN. McCain said, loud and clear, that the central front to al Qaeda is in Iraq and that we "succeeded in Iraq". READ THE IRAQ CONSTITUTION AND TELL ME HOW WELL WE SUCCEEDED. ASK THE IRAQ CHRISTIANS (if you can find any) AND TELL ME HOW WELL WE SUCCEEDED.
Go to an Iraqi Church and pray. Hope you don't mind ashes. Nearly every Church has been burned to the ground.
Right out of the New Iraq Constitution:
Article (2):
1st — Islam is the official religion of the state and is a basic source of legislation:
(a) No law can be passed that contradicts the undisputed rules of Islam.
2nd — This constitution guarantees the Islamic identity of the majority of the Iraqi people and the full religious rights for all individuals and the freedom of creed and religious practices.
Article (3): Iraq is a multiethnic, multi-religious and multi-sect country. It is part of the Islamic world and its Arab people are part of the Arab nation.
NOTE: WHEN THE CONSTITUTION TALKS ABOUT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, IT IS "WITHIN" ISLAM. NO OTHER RELIGION IS PROTECTED.
American sons and daughters died for this contitution. Iraq had a population of 1.4 MILLION in just 2004. Now it is less than 700,000. Good work Bush, McCain. It worked.
I love it when Conservatives try to tie Iraq with the attack on 9/11. Even Bush says not only was there never a connection, he doesn't know where America got the idea. Let's see. Bin Laden was in Afghanistan. Bin Laden admits to attacking America. So the US military goes to Iraq to make a fundamentalist, Islamic government. It only makes sense if you are a Republican.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTstzb7qSI4
And when he did talk about helping America, his answers were nonsensical and disconnected.
Example:
McCain's answer for creating better schools was to go to a different school and leave the bad ones behind. Not a word about making the schools better. It was all about vouchers and home schooling.
He made jokes about education. It's no surprise. McCain, like Bush before him, holds education in contempt. It's science and technology that makes this country strong. It's science and technology that keeps this country safe. McCain, like Bush before him jokes about education. BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T NEED IT. Bush, below average at Harvard only got in because of Daddy's connections. McCain 5th from the bottom out of 899 Cadents from the Naval Academy only got in because of Daddy's connections. AND IT SHOWED.
When asked about abortion, McCain never mentioned women or the child beyond "get it born". Obama talked about doing away with the need for abortion by helping women and supporting the child. From McCain, if you didn't know what abortion was, YOU WOULDN'T EVEN KNOW IT WAS ABOUT WOMEN. What do you expect from a man who supports governments funded Viagra but not birth control? Could his priorities be any more backward???? THE CONSERVATIVE POSITON HAS ALWAYS BEEN GET THEM BORN AND THEN SCREW 'EM. NOT MY KID.
McCain believes Scalia and Thomas are good Supreme Court Justices and would get rid of ALL the liberals if he gets the chance. Not understanding of any kind of balance, JUST LIKE BUSH.
McCain says "join the military" but has voted again and again against GI benefits. That was sickening. He even mentioned walking around that Baghdad market when he used 150 American soldiers as human body shields for a photo op. How the press has let him get away with this questions THEIR loyalty as Americans. How Obama lets him get away with that is beyond me.
When Obama was asked about the "difficult decision", it was how the majority of the US believed Iraq was connected to 9/11 (gee, I wonder where they got THAT idea? Bush said it wasn't from him.) but he opposed it. McCain's difficult decision was about McCain. Actually, when ever McCain veered away from McCain, it got weird.
He talks about drilling offshore but has no idea where the oil is OR EVEN IF THERE IS OIL. He is NEVER called on that, EVER. I suspect he doesn't know what exploration is or what it means. Or maybe his answer is to drill everywhere?
A perfect example of "memorized" answers, he was told there are 148 million orphans world wide. Bush put together an AIDS plan to help victims of AIDS. Would McCain do something similar for the orphans? His answer, "make adoption easier in this country"? Did he even hear the question? Oh he heard it alright. But he had memorized a different answer. Makes you wonder if he got the questions before hand, but he didn't do the best job of memorizing. Who knows, maybe his answer was to bring 148 million orphans to this country? Just to make it clear, MCCAIN'S ANSWER TO THE 148 MILLION ORPHANS WORLDWIDE WAS TO MAKE IT EASIER TO ADOPT HERE IN THIS COUNTRY.
McCain talks about the Christians in Georgia, BUT HAS NEVER, EVER MENTIONED THE CHRISTIANS IN IRAQ, NEVER!!!! The press has let him get away with this every time.
The absolute worst answer that McCain gave was about poor Americans. First, when asked how he defines a "rich" American, his joke was people that have more than 5 million dollars, while laughing.
Bush laughs about poor people. Look at his "joke" about people losing their homes. Now Laura can buy a new one cheap.
McCain is exactly the same. He is so disconnected from reality. You know his wife gives him a huge allowance.
So, McCain said there are people who have lost their jobs, have no education, no health benefits, have lost their homes, but he, McCain, KNOWS WHAT THEY NEED. Hope and confidence. That's what he said. To people who have lost everything, he will give them "hope and confidence". JUST TO MAKE IT CLEAR, MCCAIN'S ANSWER TO POEPLE WHO ARE LOSING THEIR HOMES IS TO GIVE THEM HOPE AND CONFIDENCE.
NEVER DID JOHN MCCAIN TALK ABOUT PAYING FOR ANY OF HIS SCHEMES. NEVER. NOT ONCE.
After all this, the pun-dents talk about what a masterful job McCain has done. How prepared he was. How he didn't have to make any decisions or think about any answers. WELL, HE DIDN'T THINK ABOUT A SINGLE ANSWER AND IT SHOWED. If American votes this clown into office, we will get exactly what we deserve.

Having watched the event myself and listened to David Bender (an Obama supporter) say how well McCain did last night, how conservatives were pleased with McCain's performance, and how leftists (calling in on Bender's radio show) are making ridiculous claims that Rick Warren "sand bagged" the event and are trying to rationalize Obama's long and rambling responses (in comparison to McCain's succint, to the point, and clear responses), it's clear that McCain clearly won last night, especially since the audience was not just limited to the evangelicals attending the church. Rather, the event was also viewed by those watching from all over the country on venues such as CNN, C-SPAN, and MSNBC.
In fact, McCain made Obama look like a neophyte, who clearly isn't ready to be POTUS, even though several of Obama's responses were thoughtful.

Having not watched the programming, I'll avoid commenting on it specifically. But I get the sense, generally speaking, that voters are looking for smart and thoughtful this time around. Eight years of a stumbling bumblefuck will cause voters to yearn for that kind of thing.

Al Qaeda is a Sunni organization, to my knowledge, and Pakistan doesn't border Iraq. Other than that, you and I seem to agree that Al Qaeda would prefer Obama over McCain for POTUS.

Shedd you can call it what you want. People like you are insane and too dense to reason with. Your recent behavior on this board has made it clear to me that dialog with you is pointless.
So call it "victory" or whatever you wish. I don't waste time on you any longer. Get help.

By wrenchboyAugust 17, 2008 - 8:11pmf u bush2, I believe that a new term should be introduced
In this discussion. Shedd isn't merely dense. Dense suggests a variation of one or two orders of magnitude in terms of mass packed into a tight space. Shedd goes WAYY beyond that.
I propose that Shedd is a hypermass of stupidity.

-Shed is usually in the dark.
-Shed thinks he matters, but the rest of us think his output is highly variable, incoherent, and (at best) degenerate
-Shed constantly works to undermine this group, in order to restructure it to his liking. (AKA inherent organization of stable matter into congruity with strange/dark matter)
-Dealing with Shed makes one feel less energetic
Ladies and Gentlemen of Air America, I believe we have found the first verified proof that Neo-Cons are an alien species... made of dark matter.

By Dr_BillionaireAugust 17, 2008 - 7:29pmI watched it and yes Obama
I watched it and yes Obama seemed more thoughtful - not just saying what he knew the evangelists wanted to hear. He confessed his faith in Jesus Christ and vowed to follow Jesus' teachings of looking out for the poor and less fortunate. McCain spouted nonsense about Islamo-Fascists (whatever that is) and attacking evil. Granted, McCain seemed more on game (more so than he has been) - may-be because he went last and had a chance to hear Obama's answers (although they SAID he was not allowed to).

By deanrddAugust 17, 2008 - 9:47pmMcCain was perfect!
I watched it twice.
Perhaps you could enlighten us as to which answers McCain gave that were "succinct and to the point".
Was it when he said he would help American families who were losing their homes by giving them "hope and confidence"?
Was it when he said General P., who said the the center to the war on terror is in Afghanistan, was one of the wisest people he knows? Right after that, McCain said Iraq was the center to the war against al Qaeda. Guess General P. wasn't so wise after all.
His other two "wise people" were a CEO and a man who fractured his skull.
Perhaps when McCain said the way to fix schools was to leave the bad school and go to a good one? Makes sense to me. Got a big round of applause.
Says he is against abortion, but never mentions women a single time. Do you think he knows there is a connection between women and abortion? He was 5th from the bottom out of 899 Cadets.
Maybe when he said being rich was when you own more than 5 million dollars.
McCain talked about the Christians in Georgia. Gee, I wonder if he knows the Christian population in Iraq has been decimated since 2004. Oh well, who cares?
McCain was good because he was simple and played, a la Bush, to an audience who believe science is a religion and gays are going to an imaginary hell. He was perfect.
