Moving To The "Middle" On FISA

By talkleft

Ed Kilgore writes:

And those who accuse [Obama] of cynicism for expressing heretical thoughts on FISA . . . now are perhaps the real cynics, who somehow thought he didn't really mean all his early talk about transpartisan politics or overcoming the stale debates of past decades.

The problem with this is that Obama is not being "heretical" on FISA, he is totally flip flopping on FISA. He said he would filibuster any FISA bill that included telecom immunity. Now he acts as if he never said that. As Glenn Greenwald points out:

The issue is not . . . [as] Obama-cheering Ed Kilgore put it -- that Obama is "stray[ing] from Democratic Party orthodoxy or from strict down-the-line partisanship" by "expressing heretical thoughts on FISA" . . . [t]he issue is that Obama has repeatedly, over the course of the last year, made emphatic commitments and clear statements about his own core political values that are completely irreconcilable with his support for the FISA bill.

And Ed STILL does not understand that the fundamental reason John Kerry lost in 2004 was because the American People did not believe he would stand for something:

What is the cost of wishiwashiness? Ask John Kerry. From the Texeira/Halpin article:

The direct consequences of the identity gap were most evident in the 2004 presidential contest. According to 2004 post-election polling, the most commonly cited reason not to vote for Kerry among Bush voters who considered voting Democratic -- in other words, the voters who turned the election to Bush -- was Kerry's "flip-flopping" on the issues. . . . Similarly, the top reason cited by white Catholics for why Kerry lost the 2004 election was that the candidate was "not clear on what he stood for" (48 percent selected this reason as one of the two top reasons Kerry lost, twice as many as selected "permissive views on issues like abortion and gay marriage" as one of the reasons).

Thanks for the Spam, but I'm not Hawaiian. Peddle your blog elsewhere.

George W. & George H.W. Bush - Living proof that the dumbshit doesn't fall far from the dumbass.

That may be true.

But if you read John Conyer's book "What Went Wrong in Ohio" you might come to the conclusion that Bush "won" because the Republicans cheated every single way they could manage. BTW, is there any requirement yet that electronic voting machines produce a paper receipt?

Kerry II

With this FISA cave in, how many now believe the following:

a) Obama would have voted the sameway if he was still in a fight with Hillary for the nomination.

b) If Obama couldn't stand up against a weak Bush and his political party over the FISA, how many really believe that he would have voted against the war resolution in 2002 if he was indeed in congress at the time. Yes, he did state it was against the war in 2002 but did he pay the price that the Dixie Chicks, that pretty girl on Friends, or Al Gore for their early strong opposition to the Iraq war.

Would someone please tell me where all those cable news talking heads/reporters that claimed that if the democratic leadership/superdelegates did not nominate Obama they would be going against the "will" of primary democratic voters? They seems now to have no problem with Obama shifting from those very same primary voters after he believes the nomination is wrapped up to appease what they call the political center...which I call corporate special interest.

Could anyone really trust a so called democrat that claimed his party was just as guilty as that of GW for all the failure over the last two years.

Now you know why the corporate media was so supportive of the second coming of Jimmy Carter of 1976 and John Kery of 2004. Is this the Kind of "Change!!" that drove so many to his campaign rallies? I don't think so. May all those old folks knew something that all those college educated kids missed on the way to those rallies.

Maybe it's time for democratic superdelegates to consider a different type of "Change!!!"
Thanks
