Makes it harder for McBush
Makes it harder for McBush to sell his point that the economic downturn is really just "psychological". 'Course facts never got in the way of GOP talking points in the past.

By Guy FawkesJuly 3, 2008 - 1:21pmThe United States economy
The United States economy has been declining for each of the past 7 years. We are now in free fall. While I have little confidence that Barak Obama will do anything to address the problem (since he is more of a Rockefeller Republican than a New Dealer), I know that John McCain will follow the Regan/Bush/(Clinton)/Bush path to perdition!
It is a shame that Robert Reich isn't running for President. At least his economic policy suggestions make sense - tax cut for the low and middle earner, tax increases for the richest Americans and massive Government investment in infrastructure and alternative energy.

During the first recession of dubya's, I was teetering between being un-employed and travelling for work. It SUCKED, big time! I lost my little house because of it....and that was when the cost of living was somewhat stable.
During this recession, I am still (thankfully) employed, but hubby and I are looking for a cheaper place than where we now live to rent. (We're paying house payment sized rent right now) We're trying to save for another house, but also, should the work disappear, we will still be able to afford the rent on unemployment. Just because there is work here now, doesn't mean it'll be here tomorrow.
Thank you, dubya, for the policies that created the conditions that we find ourselves dealing with today! Heck of a job!

By roadgoddessJuly 4, 2008 - 1:25pmWhen can we call it what it is...a RECESSION?
A major employer in my area announced yesterday that it's laying off 275 workers as a direct result of the downturn in full-size automobile sales in the US (they make transmission parts for pickups and SUVs). Meanwhile, gasoline prices in the area are at $4.21 per gallon, with some predicting $5/gallon before Labor Day.

By nonexistent manJuly 4, 2008 - 1:27pmcall it what it is.
sales declines in most markets are offfset by rising sales in GASOLINE due to the higher price. It gives them the kind of plausible deniabilitry on the R word that they crave in everything they do.

I believe that gasoline sales are down too...but profits keep increasing, because they keep raising the price.
I have barely gone more than 30 miles from home this summer. It's the most boring summer of my life. I can't afford to do anything because of gas prices. I think the tourism industry all over the US must be suffering because of it.

40% higher price x 20% decrease in sales = still more money and at a higher profit %. we cannot hope for the trend to stop until the math no longer works.

You may have lots of money, or you may be in permanent debt. I don't believe in borrowing money. I have friends who make the same amount of money as I do who owe thousands and thousands of dollars to credit card companies because they want to have all their fun now and don't think about the future. I refuse to get into debt. If I can't pay it off in a month, I don't buy it. The only debt I have had over the last few years is my car, and that's paid off...yippee.I had a 1% interest rate because I have a good credit score.
As a widow, I have to be careful with my money. I work. I am a school teacher. I don't get paid in summer, so I have to save over the school year for the two months I don't work.

Actually, liberalblue, my father has been dead for 21 years. And he didn't have much to leave me or my 6 siblings, so to answer your question...none. Why don't you take some of that new found wealth of yours and help ole michtou finally have a vacation. Imagine how that will make you feel. Have you taken my advice yet and started donating houses in the ninth ward?
