Our Denier-In-Chief Punts While the World Pants

Is global warming a hazard to your health? Just ask 42 year-old Abdon Felix Garcia, a farm worker in Central California. Oh, wait! You can't, because he died on Wednesday after working in a vineyard in 108 degree heat. And he's just the latest casualty of the heat wave that's gripping California's Central Valley; three other farm workers have died under similar circumstances since May.
Meanwhile, the EPA issued a 588-page federal notice on Friday that, the AP reports, makes "no finding on whether global warming poses a threat to people's health."
That is, like, so bizarre! Because just three weeks ago, the folks at the EPA had concluded that it did, and called for the regulation of greenhouse gases under the auspices of the Clean Air Act.
Three weeks ago I was in Central California myself, to attend my oldest brother's wedding. The day before my departure, when my husband Matt thoughtfully added the weather for Paso Robles to my iPhone, he literally started to shake the phone as if it were broken.
"This can't be right!" he exclaimed; the forecast showed daytime highs ranging from 107 to 110 degrees. On the day of my brother's wedding, the temperature was predicted to hit 108 degrees, so the ceremony, which had been set to take place outside, had to be moved indoors. Why? Because, well, 108 degree heat can be hazardous to your health. Just ask--oh, nevermind.
The LA suburb I grew up in, Woodland Hills (sounds so bucolic, doesn't it?), made the news recently when temperatures there hit a record 109 degrees. My memories of my Valley Girl childhood are filled with disasters: earthquakes, fires, floods, mudslides, Ronald Reagan's ascension from Screen Actors Guild President to Governor of California.
Sometimes the smog was so bad, when I was a kid, the city would issue an alert warning us not to play outdoors. That was normal. But 109 degree weather? Not even close.
In Central California last month, I couldn't get over how horribly dry and brown the hills looked, like the proverbial tinderbox. Grace, my fifteen-year old niece from lush, leafy Larchmont, couldn't either.
"What happens when lightening strikes?" she wondered. Well, Grace, you get hundreds of wildfires raging out of control, is what happens. And more every year, as the Santa Barbara Independent noted last week:
A 2006 study published in Science found that since 1986, the
number of major wildfires has increased by 400 percent, and the amount
of land these fires burned increased by 600 percent, compared to the
period from 1970 to 1986.
Until recently it was often assumed that spiking population growth and expanding land use patterns were mainly to blame for any increase in the number of big fires. But the Science study, which was conducted by researchers at the Scripps Institute and the UC Merced, concluded that these factors have had "relatively little effect." Instead, the authors wrote, the change has come about mainly because summers have gotten longer, hotter, and drier. "The transition has been marked by a shift toward unusually warm springs, longer summer dry seasons, drier vegetation, and longer fire seasons."

Do greenhouse gases contribute to global warming? You can debate that point--if you're a dumbass. But how can you possibly question whether global warming is a hazard to our health? From drought to floods to fires to a rise in pest populations and plant diseases, the world is reeling from the consequences of this fossil-fueled fever.
But it's the Bush administration that's delirious, determined to fight any attempts to regulate greenhouse gases on the grounds that it would damage the U.S. economy and cause too many job losses. So the White House forced the EPA to revise its earlier document, which not only supported regulating greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act but noted, to the Administration's consternation, that there could be a "net benefit to society...in excess of $2 trillion," as the Wall Street Journal reported Friday:
The White House on Thursday rejected EPA's conclusion
three weeks earlier that the 1970 Clean Air Act can be both workable
and effective for addressing global climate change. Instead, EPA said
Friday that law is ''ill-suited'' for dealing with
climate change...
...''One point is clear: the potential regulation of greenhouse gases under any portion of the Clean Air Act could result in unprecedented expansion of EPA authority that would have a profound effect on virtually every sector of the economy and touch every household in the land,'' EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson said in a preface to the 588-page federal notice Friday.

As opposed to global warming, which only affects some households? Like the families of the farm workers dropping dead in the fields? Or the folks who've lost their homes in the California wildfires? Or the farmers in the heartland who've lost their crops to floods?
Instead of taking action, the Decider's decided that we need to continue to debate this matter until someone who's even more of a Decider sets up shop in the Oval Office, according to the Guardian:
The US environmental
protection agency (EPA) announced today that no action will be taken
to regulate carbon emissions while George Bush remains president.
The EPA's decision to sit on its hands comes after months of wrangling between government scientists, who pressed for action in the wake of a landmark US Supreme Court ruling, and White House officials dead set against regulating pollution...
...the EPA forestalled environmental action today with a unique response. Rather than weighing in on how to regulate emissions, agency administrator Stephen Johnson extended the period for public comment on climate change until after Bush leaves office, effectively depositing the problem in the lap of the next president.

OK, so here's my public comment: on behalf of Abdon Felix Garcia and his fellow farm workers who've perished in the scorching Central Valley heat, may I state that global warming is, like, rilly, rilly deadly? Like, seriously? Mister Prezidon't, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the White House, already--you're killing us.

Just what would you consider to be proof of climate change? So far, we have seen:
25 years in a row with winter temperatures above the 20th century average
All the hottest years on record have come in the past 20 years
Agricultural records have shown that growing seasons have continually grown longer in northern latitudes
The rate of ice melting in Greenland has reached unprecedented levels
Antarctic ice shelfs that have been stable for hundreds of thousands of years are suddenly disintegrating at an alarming rate
The north pole will likely be icefree this summer for the first time in the last few thousand years
Ice cores going back 800,000 years show that the temperature rise we see is completely unprecedented in speed and magnitude from any previous temperature rise seen in that time period
What else does it take to convince them? Are ever single one of these events totally coincidental, totally unrelated, or total lies? I didn't even bother to spend any time looking up additional things that have been observed. Any scientist (or anyone with a lick of common sense) would conclude that all these things are related, and have a common root cause. The only thing that has changed in that time period is the amount of greenhouse gases in the air, and the only new source is human activity.

at us. We went from a nation respected for its dedication to human rights and freedom, a nation that led the world in science and technology, to a nation that denies science at every chance it can get, tortures in the name of "freedom", puts a million people on a terror watch list, uses illegal wiretaps to listen in on their conversations, invades a nation under the guise of getting rid of WMD and spreading democracy to hide the role of oil, and has become the biggest debtor nation in the history of the planet.

By MichtouJuly 17, 2008 - 11:28amThings Liberals Like Which Hurt The Environment By see-dubya
Don Surber notes that it’s always things liberals dislike, things freighted with consumerist guilt, that the green left protests against the loudest. Meanwhile arugula…doesn’t, though it should.
It’s a well established pattern everybody gripes about SUV’s; nobody gripes about pickup trucks even though they get about the same lousy gas mileage. I think it’s because environitwits know instinctively that pickup drivers are immune to their green guilt, whereas suburban SUV-drivers might be more susceptible to it.
But Surber doesn’t stop at arugula. What else do liberal hippies love that hurts the environment?
Likewise, smoking marijuana. Besides carbon dioxide, it releases all sorts of carcinogens.
Protest marching also is dangerous to the environment. Signs are made with paper, which kills trees. Transportation to the site also releases carbon dioxide.
…
Now to write this up into a proposal and get my grant from the National Science Foundation. Hey, maybe I can get a MacArthur Grant for the genius behind this.
There’s actually much more on drugs and the environment: I’m already there on the marijuana, deforestation. But how about Ecstasy, favorite of of the club scene? Pop a tab, kill a tree. Cocaine? Decimating the rain forests. Opium? Same thing. Meth Labs? Don’t get me started.
However, I’m sure that all of these illicit drug manufacturers are buying carbon credits to offset their horrendous environmental damage. If not, conscientious liberals will no doubt abstain from using controlled substances until they clean up their act.
Still, that’s a pretty good effort from Don. Maybe not lefty-activist enough for a MacArthur Genius Grant, but it’s certainly good enough for a prestigious See-Dubya Genius Grant:
Now, somebody please give him half a million dollars, okay? Thanks

The $11 billion in annual subsidies given by the United States, Europe and Canada for plant-based biofuels isn’t doing much to reduce carbon emissions according to a report by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. They go on to say that carbon emissions from vehicles in areas where the subsidies are received are looking at a total carbon reduction of 0.8% by 2015. A mathematical proof that climate change is a hoax appeared yesterday in a peer-reviewed paper Physics and Society. 30 equations used by the IPCC were demonstrated and showed that even doubling the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for the rest of the century only caused a one degree Fahrenheit increase in temperatures, not the predicted six degrees. The IPCC’s 2007 climate summary over predicted carbon dioxide’s impact on temperature between 500% and 2000%. The reactions of the IPCC and Al Gore were not printed in the article.

Home Latest NOAA Press Release in Total Disagareement with NASA Satellite
Written by Joseph S. D’Aleo, CCM, Fellow of the AMS
Wednesday, 16 July 2008
It was the eighth warmest June on record for the globe, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Wednesday in the 129 years since records were begun in 1880. And the first six months of the year were the ninth warmest since record keeping began in 1880, NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center reported. The planets average temperature for June was 60.8 degrees Fahrenheit, 0.9 degrees warmer than average for the month.
DON’T BELIEVE A WORD OF IT. Just a few days ago, the University of Alabama, Hunstville came out with their global assessment and they reported the 22nd warmest in the 30 years of recrods in their data base (in other words the 9th coldest). In fact, their global mean was actually below the average (base period 1979-1998) with a value of -0.11C (-0.19F).

By gt6July 17, 2008 - 1:34pmHurricane forecaster William Gray says global warming is grossly
exaggerated" Written by KEN KAYE, Sun-Sentinel
Wednesday, 16 July 2008
The studies continue to mount: global warming is likely to blame for producing more powerful hurricanes and endangering the earth's ecosystems.
Nonsense, William Gray said Tuesday.
"There's been so much hype," the Colorado State University storm prognosticator said. "But I don't think there's a real problem. I think global warming has been grossly exaggerated."
Speaking at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on Virginia Key, Gray said humans play little or no role in global warming. He said he has been "appalled" by claims that global warming is on the verge of causing great destruction, such as in Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth."
Because the U.S. government is taking substantial steps to reduce greenhouse emissions by cutting the use of fossil fuels, it's imperiling the economy, Gray told an audience of about 200, mostly college students. The problem, he said, is that fossil fuels will be sorely needed for the next four to five decades.
Gray's assertions conflict with several government and university studies indicating that humans have played a significant role in global warming through the production of greenhouse gases. Other studies have linked the gradual warming of the air and water to more powerful hurricanes.
For instance, Kerry Emanuel, an atmospheric sciences professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has found that the energy in the average hurricane increased by about 70 percent in the past 30 years. Gray contends such studies are based on computer simulations that are "all wrong."
Gray also lashed out at the media for creating unnecessary public "hysteria" over global warming.
Al Tompkins, who teaches broadcast and online journalism at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists in St. Petersburg, said there were too many media outlets for him to judge whether they acting irresponsibly on the issue. On the other hand, Tompkins said, in light of government studies indicating global warming is genuine, the issue is a legitimate one for the media.
"My gut reaction tells me the majority of the reporting shows that global warming is an emerging crisis type of story and that it's man-made more than not," he said. "If we don't excited about that, then what?"
Gray, along with research partner Phil Klotzbach, has become known for developing projections of how many storms will form during a given hurricane season, a field he pioneered and that has put him in the middle of the global warming debate.
For years, the plain-speaking Gray has dismissed warnings of melting polar ice, rising sea levels and more turbulent storm seasons as "so much foolishness." While conceding the planet is indeed warming, Gray maintains that it is the result of a natural cycle of warming and cooling caused by the circulation of the oceans.
"My projection is that in 15 to 20 years, we'll probably undergo a modest cooling," he said Tuesday. Source

At the same time he has abandoned any real effort to develop new energy sources. As Europe and Asia work towards this we will fall further behind.
A decade or two from now other nations will be in the possession of more efficient power sources and benefiting from them. We will be left behind and it will be difficult for us to even purchase this technology when our dollar is worth nothing thanks to Bush.

By A GJuly 17, 2008 - 4:01pmOnce again, your ignorant denials don't change facts
You constantly make the same stupid error. Weather is NOT climate. A single day means nothing. A single week is insignificang. Climate is LONG-TERM trends. Why has the US had 25 winters in a row with above normal temps? Why has the growing season lengthened in northern latitudes over the past century? Why is the Greenland icecap melting faster than at any time in history? Why have Antarctic ice shelfs, which have been in existence for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years, suddenly begun disintegrating? Why have all the hottest years on record in the US occured in the past 20 years?
You can't answer, because you know any answer you give will be instantly laughed to pieces. Tell me where the money comes from in putting out the warning on global warming. Who becomes a billionaire by doing so? Al Gore? As we both know, he was doing well financially before he ever began talking about global warming, so the monetary angle doesn't work there. Scientists? I'll let you in on a little secret sparky: scientists aren't out to become rich. They do scientific studies because they are curious, and they do research to address topics about which they are curious. Tax revenues for the government? The last time we had a budget surplus was under democrat Bill Clinton, and he did it all without a dime coming from global warming legislation.
You're right, there isn't a damn thing that we know now that we didn't know 25 years ago. Information and knowledge and technology are completely static. We had the technology to build the F-22 25 years ago, right? The crap story about scientists predicting an ice age 25 years ago is just that----crap. NO ONE ever predicted we were heading into an ice age. A recent look back at 1970s scientific journals showed that 7 predicted global cooling, 20 were neutral and 44 predicted GLOBAL WARMING. In other words, even over 30 years ago, most scientists were seeing evidence of GLOBAL WARMING.
And I almost forgot.....BWAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAA BWAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAHAAAAAAA!

We must feel embarrassed for them, as they seem to be unable to experience any human emotions, even embarrassment.

By UffdaguyJuly 17, 2008 - 3:30pmCourteous, lady, aren't I?!
I do have my limits on how embarrassed I am for these morons, I can only forgive blissful ignorance to a point.
Speaking of McSame's "memory", where the fuck is the MSM on this? Can you IMAGINE if Obama fumbled stupidly on a question about birth control? Couldn't tell the difference between Sunni and Shiite? When he blatantly lies and then tries to backpedal??
I do have to give Joe Biden MANY kudos when he correctly stated that while he respects McSame's military service, we don't need a war hero for president, we need a person of WISDOM, and questioned McSame's wisdom in that he has firmly embraced Monkey Boy's failed foreign policies. And, it was a nice, little bitch-slap he gave McSame when he said that while he's been to Iraq more times than McSame, he certainly wouldn't call himself more qualified. This McSame's more qualified on foreign policy just because he's been to an outdoor market in Baghdad a few times bullshit is ... bullshit.

I can't recall ever seeing a politician just stand and stare and gape as McCain did when asked that question. When his aged brain and mouth finally got together, he was actually able to make it WORSE. The more I see of McCain, the more convinced I am that a historic dem landslide is making its way down the mountain, soon to bury repubs way over their heads. I am so grateful that they were able to choose a candidate that even THEY don't support! The only way it could have been better would have been if Clueless Fred had gotten the nod. Anyone know if he's available to be VP? I can see it now---old and clueless teams with older and even more clueless.

By Pookie2112July 17, 2008 - 5:32pmHey bannedfrogg
Have you noticed that these hypocrits have changed the WAR CRY, from Global Warming to Climate Change? I think they're just trying to cover their respective asses. Climate change can cover anything from rising temps to lower temps.
The fact is, we are experiencing climate change. From hot to cold. We have been in a warming cycle for thousands of years, and now we are returning to a natural cooler period. This will effect climate, throughout the world. As it has always done, for billions of years. Nothing new. Except now, we have a bunch of KNOW NOTHINGS, getting hysterical about it.

By fu bush3July 17, 2008 - 3:35pmAs President Shit Pants used to say
"There you go again". You have absolutely no facts to back up what you are saying, so you just pull them out of your ass. There is no evidence that states we are cooling. All evidence points to the contrary. I won't bother bitchslapping you with everything I used against shithedd, as I will go out on a limb and assume that you can read and use a scroll wheel. Mighty big assumption, I know, but I have faith that you can master both of those tasks if you just take your time and concentrate.
Why do we say climate change? Because morons like you couldn't understand the concept of global warming, so we had to use a term that perhaps even you can comprehend. The climate is CHANGING, hence "global climate change.
The only know nothings are mouth breathers like you.

By UffdaguyJuly 17, 2008 - 3:54pmIt's not a change at all.
It's not a change at all. It's just using a more generic term. Much more is happening that is fucked up on this planet's environment beyond global warming. Actually global warming is really one specific symptom of the overall global climate change.
So you have evidence that flies in the fact of scientific consensus that actually says that we are cooling? Really, you should go with that feeling. Maybe you can join Froggy in the Flat Earth Society.

Wow, you are way off! We are in the middle of global warming right now. In just the past 6 months the average daily temperature in the United States has risen by over 30 degrees! Why, just a short 6 months ago much of North America was covered with snow, now, thanks to mankind alone, the snow is GONE forever! If current trends continue, it will get to 140 degrees in Detroit by December! The oceans will be boiling by next July if we don't sacrifice productivity to the Algore god immediately! Why do you want everyone to die?

Yikes!!
So many words that serve only reveal your lack of objectivity, critical thinking skills and useful vocabulary!
If you care about the future, you might want to at least consider that our planet is suffering and that maybe we can love our life here on planet earth enough to choose to attend to it's long term health.
Your hard headed biases just might put your grand kids in harms way!

And I would appreciate it if people would stop using Auschwitz to justify their bullshit, my grandfather died in Auschwitz so it isn't fucking funny. My grandmother was devastated when she found out he fell out of that guard tower.

However, you pussy, since I've lost family members in the Holocaust, I have every right to be "pissy", as you so eloquently put it. Your "joke" is tasteless, insensitive and offensive and proves what a tasteless, insensitive and offensive waste of human flesh you are.

Why is it that repubs have to prove they have no soul before they can be a member of the party?
If there is one thing in common that seems to link all repubs and their policies, it is the total lack of compassion they display for anyone. They seem to all be selfish, narcissistic louts that excel only at greed and crassness. You have proven that you are a true repub with the above remark. Reminds me of Bush as governor, who mocked a crying mother who had begged him to spare her son the death penalty. Sick, sick, sick.

By UffdaguyJuly 18, 2008 - 11:27amYou couldn't be more wrong.
You're not just wrong, but STUNNINGLY WRONG.
Further, it is typical Contard projection. You know the global warming deniers (at least the ones Contards like you always quote) are paid industry SHILLS so you assume legitimate scientists must be too... WRONG!
I've tried to explain to you what "science" is several times now, but it hasn't sunk in... because you're a fucking Contard.
I know it's beyond your comprehension, but there actually are people in this world that value truth and knowledge above money.
Legitimate scientists are like fighter-jocks in this sense: There are a LOT of easier ways to make a lot more money than becoming a fighter-jock. Same with scientists (especially young ones). But it's not about money (insane! eh, froggy?!), It's about ego, it's about being the best... it's about making it to the top of the heap.
You are one stupid, gullible son-of-a-bitch, froggy. Truth is, I don't give a flying fuck what you believe because this particular crisis IS GOING TO FIND YOU. You can't buy your way out of it and you can't shoot it... You can't bully it and you can't destroy it with character assasination.
