Feel It Closing In

By Spencer Ackerman

Nouri al-Maliki destroyed John McCain's position on the Iraq war yesterday. Not only did his spokesman manage to entrench the story in his ostensible walk-back, but everyone's paying attention. Chuck Todd, for instance, noted:

And then what Maliki did, even in the backtrack statement that the spokes--the government spokesperson over there said, he threw in the word "timetable." He's used not just "time is right," but he threw in the word "timetable," which is--the Obama campaign said, you know, that, that--"Thank you for that release."

It's not entirely the case that John McCain's presidential candidacy is dead, but it's in Terry Schiavo territory. Everyone's had fun with the anonymous GOP consultant who told Marc Ambinder, "We're fucked." But that's an understatement. They're really, really fucked. McCain doesn't have anything to say about the economy, doesn't have anything to say about health care, doesn't have anything to say about... anything except national security, and his trump there would be, allegedly, Iraq. And even on Iraq, his message is, in a philosophical sense, a negative one, emphasizing the superiority of his judgment and the alleged immaturity of Obama's. But when the Prime Minister of Iraq publicly agrees with Obama, McCain is beyond fucked -- he's fucked in half with a spiky, acid-tipped dick.

For instance: over at the McCain Report, the campaign's blog written by the brazziere-needing Michael Goldfarb of the Weekly Standard, the top post right now is titled "U.S. Military To Obama: Timetable Sends 'Wrong Signal To Enemy'." LOLerskates! I guess Nouri al-Maliki just sent the wrong signal to his own enemies. If Goldfarb or anyone else associated with the campaign had any idea how to respond to Maliki's statement, there would be something up on the McCain Report by now. For the time being, here's how Randy "Blood For Oil" Scheuneman flailed about, via Ezra Klein:

"The difference between John McCain and Barack Obama is that Barack Obama advocates an unconditional withdrawal that ignores the facts on the ground and the advice of our top military commanders. John McCain believes withdrawal must be based on conditions on the ground. Prime Minister Maliki has repeatedly affirmed the same view, and did so again today. Timing is not as important as whether we leave with victory and honor, which is of no apparent concern to Barack Obama. The fundamental truth remains that Senator McCain was right about the surge and Senator Obama was wrong. We would not be in the position to discuss a responsible withdrawal today if Senator Obama's views had prevailed."

Ezra makes the necessary points here, to which all I'd add is that Scheueman's need to deny what Maliki said will, delightfully, entrench the narrative that McCain is either an imperialist or in the throes of denial.

The brain dead will still

The brain dead will still vote for McCain, because they can't stand the idea of a competent ("arrogant") black man in office.

The brain dead will still

The brain dead will still vote for McCain, because they can't stand the idea of a competent ("arrogant") black man in office.

you're right, it has nothing to do with the fact that he's a first term senator with no experience managing anything, much less leading the free world, the fact that his ("previous") pastor of 20+ years is a raving, white-hating, lunatic, that fact that in favor higher taxes, or the fact that as a democrat he's probably in favor of significantly stricter gun control, and significantly looser abortion laws....

but yeah...it's probably because he's black...

Obama's a natural born leader-- McCain a natural born follower

They each have a natural place on the dogsled team.
Let them dance until November. Truth will be apparent.

Maybe that is why repub trolls like McCain so much

They also have no idea about how to lead, so they follow-----Rush, Hannity, Rove, Coulter, or whoever else they can find that promises to do the thinking for them so they don't have to it themselves. What they haven't figured out is that the people they think are doing all that brain work for them are just using them. Those people couldn't think their way out of a paper bag.

Right on

Sh*it, you can't fool your way into politics, off the streets of Chicago. That man was fire-tested before he touched a desk in DC.
Look out.

Bill and Hillary said, who is this kid dynamo?

Repubs are afraid of him precisely because he brings their

incompetence into such stark contrast. A comedian I was listening to illustrated it so well, although on a slightly different topic. He was saying that you don't ever want to date someone who is perfect, because they magnify your own flaws. You need to be with someone as flawed as yourselves.

Right now, repubs see their own flaws, their greed and incompetence, magnified by the fact that Obama doesn't have those same flaws to the same staggering degree. Is he perfect? Of course not, and we don't want or need a perfect person in the White House, because no such person exists. What we need is someone who is demonstrably more competent than what we have had for the past 7 years.

In reality, though, Obama makes McCain look pretty good.

Sure he does, in your "reality" ... let us know when you pull your head out of your ass and we'll explain what REALITY is.

Name those liberals who own, operate and run the news media. It is a simple question that no right wing extremist like you can or will answer. That is reality. You are the dumbest poster here, and with socialistfrogg around, that says a lot.

The only way Obama could make McCain look good is......

ummmmmmm......is...........uhhhhhhhhh. Hell, let's face it, there's no way Obama or anyone else alive can make McCain look good. Wait, wait, maybe he could make McCain look good if they had a bowling match and McCain won. Or maybe if they let Obama take the controls of a jet fighter and he plowed it into the ground 6 times.....one more than that accomplished jet jock McCain. Hell, even Chimpy didn't crash his plane, not even once.

What makes Obama a black

What makes Obama a black man? He is just as much a white man as he is a black man. Now whether or not he is competent/arrogant is another question.

For better or worse, McCain wedded to town halls

For better or worse, McCain wedded to town halls
By CHARLES BABINGTON
The Associated Press
Saturday, July 19, 2008; 9:30 AM

DENVER -- John McCain was in his favorite campaign setting, a town hall meeting, when he spotted a promising target. "I'd love to recognize you first, sir," the Republican presidential candidate said to a man in a Vietnam War veteran's hat.

Instead of a softball opening question from a fellow vet, however, McCain got a lengthy harangue, as the man insisted the senator had opposed better medical benefits for veterans.

...

At the Denver event, for example, McCain called Social Security's funding process "a disgrace." Hammered by critics who noted that Social Security has had essentially the same funding mechanism since it began, McCain later said the problem is that today's young workers may not receive the program's full benefits unless Congress revamps its structure.

Earlier at a New Hampshire town hall, McCain told an anti-war voter that the U.S. presence in Iraq could last "100 years." Obama pounced, although McCain indicated he was talking of a peacekeeping role similar to that still played by U.S. troops in South Korea rather than a century of combat.

As for trying to deliver a well-focused message in town halls, a recent article in The Gazette of Colorado Springs summed up the challenge. McCain "came to Denver to talk about the economy," the paper reported, "but ended up discussing everything from Social Security to articles of impeachment during a town hall meeting."

Real Men Vote for John McCain

Real Men Vote for McCain: Top 10 reasons why.

By Lou Aguilar

1. Barack Obama spent 20 years sitting in church while his preacher and others bad-mouthed the United States of America. Navy pilot John McCain spent five years being tortured in the Hanoi Hilton, and refused a chance to walk out ahead of fellow POWs with more seniority.

2. Obama wants to cut and run from Iraq regardless of conditions on the ground or future consequences. McCain took on the president and secretary of defense in demanding more troops for Iraq, a policy that is inarguably winning the war. He also has two sons who fought in Iraq.

3. McCain supports nuclear power. Obama backs wind energy.

4. Obama wants restrictive gun control because only economically depressed middle-Americans “cling to God and guns.” McCain unwaveringly supports the Second Amendment.

5. McCain has deviated from his party’s conservative base on several occasions (McCain-Feingold Bill, Gang of 14, McCain-Kennedy Bill, opposition to torture). Obama has voted the left-wing line every single time, and been designated the most liberal Senator in Congress.

6. Obama is willing to meet with hostile state leaders like Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez without preconditions. McCain will set conditions first, talk later — maybe.

7. Obama is married to a bitter, angry lawyer who became “proud” of her country for the first time this year. McCain’s wife is a beer heiress who founded an organization to provide MASH-style units to disaster-torn world regions. Did I mention that she’s a beer heiress?

8. Obama supports higher taxes for a government-run nanny state that will coddle all Americans like babies. McCain trusts people to spend their less-taxed money however they wish.

9. The name John McCain sounds like “John McClain,” the action hero played by Bruce Willis in the manly Die Hard series. “Barack Obama” sounds like the kind of elitist villain John McClain has to outwit and defeat.

10. McCain is endorsed by Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Obama gets support from Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, and every weenie in Hollywood. Plus, Susan Sarandon has vowed to leave the country if McCain gets elected. Case closed.

And I am sure

a "real man" like you will be joining up for Iraq as soon as possible, right? Where did those "real men" Bush and Cheney serve? You are just another right wing sissy punk.

By SheddJuly 21, 2008 - 10:31am

"1. Barack Obama spent 20 years sitting in church while his preacher and others bad-mouthed the United States of America."
That's an unfair misrepresentation of a marine preacher's life and work and Mr. Obama time in the church.

"Navy pilot John McCain spent five years being tortured in the Hanoi Hilton, and refused a chance to walk out ahead of fellow POWs with more seniority."
True. I guess anythings possible.

"2. Obama wants to cut and run from Iraq regardless of conditions on the ground or future consequences."
A false misrepresentation

"McCain took on the president and secretary of defense in demanding more troops for Iraq,"
Not alone, weakly, late and after he called it 'whack a mole'

"a policy that is inarguably winning the war"
false but you probably don't know what inarguably means given your inability to reason.

"He also has two sons who fought in Iraq."
One from each wife?

"3. McCain supports nuclear power. Obama backs wind energy."
And... what else does McCain support and what else do Obama support.

I find it amazing that people can watch bridge collapses, levee failures, massive electrical grid blackouts, increased mining accidents, inadequate pipeline maintenance, more refinery explosion, pharmaceutical improprieties, massive bank failures, inadequate airline inspection, be rapt with fear of terrorists and simultaneously want more nuclear power.

4. Obama wants restrictive gun control because only economically depressed middle-Americans “cling to God and guns.” McCain unwaveringly supports the Second Amendment.
Yet another misrepresentation. Please tell me how McCain defines "a well regulated militia".

"5. McCain has deviated from his party’s conservative base on several occasions (McCain-Feingold Bill, Gang of 14, McCain-Kennedy Bill, opposition to torture)."
Yes, I remember when John McCain didn't support disastrous economic policies. However, he has now turned the corner on trickle down and gone soft on torture.

"Obama has voted the left-wing line every single time [I'm going to go out on a limb and call that false], and been designated the most liberal Senator in Congress."
By whom and by what criteria?

"6. Obama is willing to meet with hostile state leaders like Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez without preconditions." "McCain will set conditions first, talk later — maybe."
That is odd. The whole the US will come to negotiations if everyone agrees to give us our way in advance strategy has borne such fruit over the last 6+ years. Think of it as a sarcastic way of tallying your misrepresentations.

"7. Obama is married to a bitter, angry lawyer who became “proud” of her country for the first time this year."
Misrepresentation of a spouse.

"McCain’s wife is a beer heiress who founded an organization to provide MASH-style units to disaster-torn world regions."
You can do some good things with inherited wealth I guess.
What no mention of Mrs. Obama's charitable endeavors?

"Did I mention that she’s a beer heiress?"
Yes you did but you failed to mention her new Belgian and Brazilian bosses. Why is that?

"8. Obama supports higher taxes for a government-run nanny state that will coddle all Americans like babies. McCain trusts people to spend their less-taxed money however they wish."
That's two more misrepresentations. You're quite the simpleton.

"9. The name John McCain sounds like “John McClain,” the action hero played by Bruce Willis in the manly Die Hard series. “Barack Obama” sounds like the kind of elitist villain John McClain has to outwit and defeat."
Are you the guy who spends time sharing jesus with young boys in a captive setting doing government funded rehab? Or is that a different idiot?

"10. Case closed."
How does this gem of reasoning work? The less accomplished group of actors are the more competent political observers?

Typical Leftist Response

Lame rebuttal, comprised of assertions with no facts to support them. In comparison, the critiques of Obama are based on facts reported by multiple media outlets (such as the NYT, Washington Post, and other media outlets) all of which support Obama - not McCain.

Why do you want to ban string and pulley's?

By SheddJuly 21, 2008 - 10:31am

I guess you missed the questions. How about just giving me McCain's definition of a well regulated militia?

Btw, opinions, inferences, interpretations and such do not become facts by virtue of being reported.

Do you not understand basic

Do you not understand basic English? Read the damn amendment sometime. It says that enabling the creation of well regulated militia is the reason that the right of the people to keep and bear arms must not be infringed upon, NOWHERE in the amendment does it even suggest that membership of a militia is required in order to own a gun. Does a 55 mph speed limit sign mean that everyone must drive 55? Nope, people are free do drive 52 if they want to.

By bannedfroggJuly 22, 2008 - 5:42pm

Why does Rush hate strings & pulleys? Why does he think that strings & pulleys that don't work the way he wants them to are "phony"?

George W. & George H.W. Bush - Living proof that the dumbshit doesn't fall far from the dumbass.

By bannedfroggJuly 22, 2008 - 5:42pm

It does say for the purpose of a well regulated militia. Furthermore to maintain the militia requires that the right to bear arms not be infringed upon. Allowing people to own weapons does not mean there can not be some regulation as to where they can be carried or what type.

The militia may need everyone to own a side arm. It does not need everyone to own a machine gun. So the people are armed as needed.

You need to go back to school.

"It does say for the purpose

"It does say for the purpose of a well regulated militia."

No it doesn't, liar.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

It doesn't even suggest that membership of a militia is, or should ever be required to own a gun. It doesn't say that keeping state or local government approved types of firearms shall not be infringed.

Now that your latest argument has been destroyed, care to tell us all what a militia consisted of back in the day? Does it say "the right of the well regulated militias to keep and bear arms", or "the right of the people to keep and bear arms"? My vote is for what it actually says in the amendment, THE PEOPLE.

By bannedfroggJuly 22, 2008 - 6:13pm

See you proved my point. For a well regulated militia.

McCain Owns First Foreign Policy Gaffe During Obama's Iraq Trip
ABC News | July 21, 2008 09:34 AM

As Barack Obama began his trip to the Middle East and Europe, the media was already speculating about the possibility of a gaffe. Obama's travel "carries political risk," the New York Times reported, "particularly if Mr. Obama makes a mistake."

But the only foreign policy error made in the last few days came this morning on ABC's Good Morning American, when John McCain made ANOTHER geography gaffe while trying to criticize Obama's visit to Iraq. (Just last week, McCain repeatedly referred to Czechoslovakia, a country that hasn't existed since 1993.)

Asked by Diane Sawyer whether the "the situation in Afghanistan in precarious and urgent," McCain responded: "I think it's serious. . . . It's a serious situation, but there's a lot of things we need to do. We have a lot of work to do and I'm afraid it's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border."

But as ABC's Rick Klein noted: "Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border. Afghanistan and Pakistan do."

I propose a voting

I propose a voting question:

Q: The reason for McCain's constant stream of "mistakes is":

A. He's stupid
B. He's senile
C. Both
D. He's been dead for 10 years, just nobody bothered to tell him

-- McCain = Four more years of the same --

Q: So what's Obama's excuse

Q: So what's Obama's excuse for his constant stream of mistakes?

A. He's not particulary bright
B. He doesn't know what he's talking about
C. He's dishonest
D. He has extremely bad judgement
E. He' senile
F. All of the above.

By SheddJuly 21, 2008 - 12:30pm

McCain's mistakes are simply frightening. He has no business running for president.

Obamalamadingdong: More Mistakes Made Than McCain!

Oh..and by the way, McCain has made far fewer mistakes than Obama, even though the latter's much younger than McCain, probably because McCain actually knows something, while Obama doesn't.

By SheddJuly 21, 2008 - 1:06pm

Obama knows his geography and he's never crashed a plane (let alone 5 of them).

Maybe they'd like Obama better if he divorced Michelle

and married a wealthy heiress. Or maybe if he forgot which nation bordered which nation. Or who the major factions were in Iraq. Or if he cracked some tasteless joke about women. Or if he called his wife C - - T.

Or if he was caught toe-tapping in an airport men's bathroom.

Of course you can prove this statement, right?

No, you cant. You are lying again. Who are the liberals who own, operate and run the news media? You cant and wont answer. If you did, it would prove you a liar.

Don't hurt yourself reaching, shitspread.

I know you're desperate but don't hurt yourself on our account.

“God has a sense of humor. If you don't believe me, tomorrow go to Wal-Mart and just look at people.” Carlos Mencia

If Shithedd is so confident that McCain doesn't make

mistakes, I suggest take a flight with McCain in the pilot's seat. In view of McCain's "mistake-free" history, he'll probably auger it into the ground for crash number 6. And why did McCain crash so much? Well, being a pilot requires a great deal of judgement, and since McCain clearly lacks any judgement (good judgement, that is), it should be expected that he'd be about as good at flying as your average brick.

A cadet at Anapolis should have good judgment as well ...

McSame's judgment sucked there, too.

I guess shitspread is of the mind-set that if you parrot lie long enough, it becomes truth, to the delusional mind, that is.

“God has a sense of humor. If you don't believe me, tomorrow go to Wal-Mart and just look at people.” Carlos Mencia

I think part of it is also the ingrained idea that a repub

military guy is always the best choice. He is automatically brave, heroic, patriotic, and smart. If he is a dem military guy, he must have lied about his experiences, is a coward, is secretly an enemy sympathizer, etc.

While we should respect those who served in the military, we cannot automatically put them on some sort of a pedestal because of that. Is an ex-military guy a better candidate for president than a Ph.D economist, or an engineer, a scientist, a doctor or diplomat? No one person can possibly have the broad ranges of experiences that would allow them to be experts at all aspects of running this country. As a result, we need to look at judgement, and McCain has been a disastrous failure in that area, specializing in bad judgement for more years than Obama has even been alive.

Since when did military service become a prerequisite

for the presidency? If it were a requirement, Monkey Boy shouldn't have gotten past the first set of primaries in 2000.

Besides, there are many, many examples throughout our history of our military leaders using poor judgment ... hell, just off the top of my head, look how many Lincoln had to go through until he found one who DID have good judgment, for the most part. I could care less if a candidate did time in the military; that doesn't automatically mean he or she uses good judgment. I'm more concern with said individuals intelligence, use of reason and common sense and knowledge of our Constitution than if they served in the military.

“God has a sense of humor. If you don't believe me, tomorrow go to Wal-Mart and just look at people.” Carlos Mencia

Military was never a prerequisite to be president, as the

Constitution never mentions that among its requirements. However, it seems that this has always been something that has been played up in American politics, from the days of Zachary Taylor onwards. Even a great military leader like Grant can be a truly terrible president. Today we have an example of a supposedly accomplished businessman (although the evidence is contrary to that view), doing a terrible job as president.

That was my point - it never was and never SHOULD be.

You're right - Grant was a brilliant military mind but, like Monkey Boy, failed MISERABLY in business as well as the presidency. Christ, if it weren't for him writing his memoirs, he would have died flat-out broke.

That one always threw me - Monkey Boy failed at EVERY business venture he got his little monkey fingers on ... I guess if you repeat the lie often enough ...

“God has a sense of humor. If you don't believe me, tomorrow go to Wal-Mart and just look at people.” Carlos Mencia

I'm surprised. There can't

I'm surprised. There can't be much on the top of your head, since it's extremely difficult to balance anything on a point.

I wouldn't know about that, shitspread.

Considering that you are the supreme dunce here; you've worn that cap for so long that the melon atop your shoulders has molded quite nicely too it. Congrats.

D) "He has extremely bad judgement"... REALLY?... Well he had enough judgement to know THAT PRESIDENT SHIT-FOR-BRAINS, DEARTH CHEENEY, AND NOSFER-RUMSFELD WERE STEERING US INTO THE WORST FOREIGN POLICY DISASTER IN AMERICA HISTORY... On behalf of right-wing KOOKS (who have since DISSAPPEARED!)... Like Paul (Pay My Mistress - PLEASE!) Wolfowitz... Richard (I'll be in my French Chalet if you need me) Pearle and William "MR. WRONG" Kristol...

C. "He's dishonest" ... Two words, ass-wipe... THE KEATING FIVE.

B. "He doesn't know what he's talking about"... Yeah?? Well he knows a fucking Shiite from a Sunni DOESN'T HE?!...OBAMA KNOWS A KURD FROM A TURD don't he!, unlike Senator Bush-For-McBrains!

A. "He's not particulary bright" ... BWAHH!!!...HA! HA! HA!..HAAA!!!... HA!...BWAHH!!!...HA! HA! HA!..HAAA!!!... HA!...BWAHH!!!...HA! HA! HA!..HAAA!!!... HA!...

Hmmm... Let me see... A middle-class guy who crawled his way to the top, against all odds to become Editor of the Harvard Law Review?... or Some asshole who got into school BECAUSE OF HIS DADDY (like Bush!) AND FOUGHT HIS WAY DOWN TO THE ROCK BOTTOM OF HIS CLASS... A FUCKING ACADEMIC DISGRACE.

========================

Hey skeeter... how does my ass taste?... JACKASS!

An Observation

"I'm so looking forward to the debates"

Wow...you must be a masochist!

Wow...you must be a

Wow...you must be a masochist!

No I'm going to enjoy watching McCain mix up ethnic groups in Iraq and show us how little he knows about geography. I can't wait.

My suggestion for Obama before any debate with McBush: Slap McBush hard enough on the hump on his back under his coat to disable the receiver from LIEberman who will be trying his best to feed McBush info and to keep McBush from stepping in his own poo!

"During his senior year at Andover, an elite New England prep school, George W. Bush formed a stickball league as a way of thumbing his nose at the athletic tradition of the school. He named his team the Nads."

Absolutely.

Or perhaps have a poolside debate in swim suits. LOL

By f u bush2July 21, 2008 - 5:29pm

When Obama leans down to greet McBush, Obama should say "testing, testing,1,2,3" loudly into
McBush's ear.

Oh, Obama wins the swim suit matchup by a .... well, uh, everything! Same win as when brains are compared.

POINTLESS DRIVEL.

YOU CAN SMELL THE DESPERATION.

When McCain and Obama stand side by side AND MATCH WITS... MATCH MEMORIES... MATCH ANALYTICAL THINKING ABILITIES...Phew!!...

IT IS GOING TO BE EMBARASSING!

A part of me feels sorry for McCain... until I remember what a flip-flopping, sycophantic, Bush-Sucking TOOL of all the motherfuckers who have exploited the middle-class (The REAL strength of America) ... AND BROUGHT THIS GREAT NATION TO IT'S KNEES... that McCain is.

... Then I snap out of it and say FUCK JOHN McCAIN!!

"A battle of WITS?"

"To the DEATH? Very well, I accept! Now I am an old fart and you think I can't reach too far, so I cal clearly not drink from the glass in front of me. But you are a godless lib who does not fear Hellfire, so I can clearly not drink from the glass in front of you!"

"Truly, your intellect is dizzying."

But only slightly less well known is this...

After locking up his party’s presidential nomination, Barack Obama’s fundraising operation came roaring back to life in June, generating more than a million dollars on five days, including a whopping $25 million that came in on the last day of the month.

His one-day haul represents nearly half of his
