Lieberman is Out of Line

by BooMan
The effort to turn Iran into the latest incarnation of Nazi Germany is deeply dishonest and depressing. For some people, anyone that makes Israel uncomfortable is a de facto
Nazi. Iran has not fought a war of territorial expansion in centuries.
I can't even think of an example in the last 500 years. What's more,
Israel is armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons. Iran has no nuclear
weapons. And, if they did have them, they'd be no more likely to
explode one in Israel than Pakistan is today. If Pakistan were to
attack Israel with nuclear weapons there would be no need for America
to 'obliterate' them because Israel would do the job first.
Iran has its faults. So did the Soviet Union. But the Soviet Union
never used its nuclear weapons. And, unlike the Soviet Union, Iran has
no territorial ambitions. Their support of Hezbollah is as much about
strengthening their Shi'a brethren in Lebanon's internecine political
fights as it is about harassing Israelis. And their alleged support of
Hamas is about having street cred as one of the few Islamic countries
willing to continue the fight post Camp David.
I don't expect Israelis to turn a passive eye to activities that
threaten and sometimes kill their citizens. Israelis are rightly
angered by both Iran's actions and their irresponsible rhetoric. But
Iran poses a low-level threat, not an existential one. The Iranians are
not suicidal.
Moreover, it pays to remember that even Nixon and Kissinger met
repeatedly with our communist adversaries in China, North Vietnam, and
the Soviet Union. They talked to the Soviet ambassador almost daily.
And that is really what this debate is about. Do we talk to our enemies
or do we just try to kill them?
When President Bush goes before the Knesset and compares Democrats to Nazi appeasers, he's crossing a line. And for Joe Lieberman to issue this statement is just appalling.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Joseph Lieberman (ID-CT)
issued the following statement in response to President Bush’s
statement to the Israel Knesset this morning:“President Bush got it
exactly right today when he warned about the threat of Iran and its
terrorist proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah. It is imperative that we
reject the flawed and naïve thinking that denies or dismisses the words
of extremists and terrorists when they shout “Death to America” and
“Death to Israel,” and that holds that—if only we were to sit down and
negotiate with these killers—they would cease to threaten us. It is
critical to our national security that our commander-in-chief is able
to distinguish between America’s friends and America’s enemies, and not
confuse the two.”
What does Joe want to do? Kill all the Iranians? Kill all the Lebanese?
Kill all the Gazans? That kind of exterminationist thinking is a lot
closer to NaziThink than Joe would like to admit. But it's implicit in
his logic. And why does Joe Lieberman say that these groups threaten
'us'? Has Hezbollah attacked America, or attacked Americans in the last
twenty years? Has Hamas, ever?
You want to know what has made Israel safer than anything else in its
history? The peace treaties that Carter hammered out with Egypt and
Clinton hammered out with Jordan. That was accomplished by talking, not
fighting. Israel no longer faces any credible threat of land invasion,
and they have the last two Democratic presidents to thank for it.
Presidents Reagan and Bush encouraged two disastrous invasions of
Lebanon. That's the kind of terrible advice Israel has received from
Republican leaders that are supposed to be strong on terrorism. Prior
to the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, suicide bombing was almost unheard of
in the Islamic world, and Iran's influence was almost completely
contained within their own borders.
Comparing Iran to Nazi Germany is a grave insult to our intelligence. Even our Secretaries of Defense and State
recognize the necessity and advisability of engaging Iran. Is it any
wonder why the Democrats kicked Joe Lieberman out of the party? I don't
know what it would take to convince him that his policies make Israel
less secure. History is so stark and decisive on the matter, that I
suppose Lieberman just doesn't read it.

You may want to remember who got Lieberman elected. Was it dems? Ummmmm....no. He was supported by the repub party, who had refused to give any real support to their own candidate. The majority of the votes for Lieberman came from repubs.
Lieberman is a moron of the highest order, and after November, he will probably switch to the repub side to finish his career, which will no doubt end in 2012. He has such impecable timing, picking a time when the repub president he supports has record disapproval ratings, and is even being shunned by his own party. He wants to support a party that not only is a minority party in the House and Senate right now, but has lost all 3 seats in traditionally repub districts in special elections in the past couple of month, which is a sign they will become an even smaller minority after November. It's like he decided to jump on the bandwagon of a team that is down 3 games to nothing in a 7 game playoff, and is losing badly with 5 seconds to go in the game. I guess Hillary isn't the only one with terrible judgement.
And I am also glad the commentator in the thread pointed out what I have been pointing out for quite a while. Why threaten to nuke Iran, when Israel could do the job so much faster than we could ever hope to do? Would we really need to send some nukes to kick up the radioactive debris and incinerated bodies left by an Israeli counterstrike? Or is it just that someone feels they need to prove they've got big balls by telling everyone how "tough" they are. To me, it sounds like Michael Jackson singing "I'm bad, I'm bad, you know it". Saying it, (or singing it) doesn't make it true. It just makes you sound shrill and desperate.

Why threaten to nuke Iran, when Israel could do the job so much faster than we could ever hope to do?
-Who ever said nuke Iran. I think using nukes is in NO WAY a good idea. We can use conventional weapons to wipe out their nuclear facilites just like the Israel did to Syria and Iraq.
Now, you ask why should we do it when Israel could do it just as well? My answer is because if WE do it Iran has no reason to hit Israel and because Iran has no business with the means to create a nuclear weapon.

ISFAHAN - Uranium conversion plant
Iran is building a plant at a nuclear research facility to convert uranium ore into three forms:
Hexafluoride gas - used in gas centrifuges
Uranium oxide - used to fuel reactors, albeit not the type Iran is constructing
Metal - often used in the cores of nuclear bombs. The IAEA is concerned about the metal's use, as Iran's reactors do not require it as fuel.
NATANZ - Uranium enrichment plant
Iran resumed uranium enrichment work at Natanz in July 2004, after a halt during negotiations with leading European powers over its programme.
It announced in September 2007 that it had installed 3,000 centrifuges, the machines that do the enrichment.
This is the facility at the heart of Iran's dispute with the United Nations Security Council.
The Council is concerned because the technology used for producing fuel for nuclear power can be used to enrich the uranium to a much higher level to produce a nuclear explosion.
ARAK - Heavy water plant
The existence of a heavy water facility near the town of Arak first emerged with the publication of satellite images by the US-based Institute for Science and International Security in December 2002.
Heavy water is used to moderate the nuclear fission chain reaction either in a certain type of reactor - albeit not the type that Iran is currently building - or produce plutonium for use in a nuclear bomb.
But that's ok Chamberlin keep your head in the sand and appease Imademonjihad....GWB will take care of it for you...WAITAMINUTE...Wasn't it HILLARY the voted FOR war against Saddam AND VOTED FOR the Kyl-Lieberman amendment!

You condone actions that cause large numbers of innocent casualties and you dismiss it with a heartless comment about it being a time of war. And why do you do this? By UffdaguyMay 16, 2008 - 9:24amWho said nuke Iran.......ummmm.....Hillary?
Ummmmm....Bush? Hillary said that if Iran attacked Israel, they would be obliterated, would face mass retaliation. We both know exactly what that means. It isn't a few stray cruise missiles taking out an aspirin factory. That's nuclear weapons, pure and simple. And the Bush administration said long ago that some of those nuclear facilities can only be taken out with nukes, so yes, some people say we need to use nukes.
Use conventional weapons like Israel did to Syria and Iraq? Two points:
1. There is absolutely zero proof that the facility attacked in Syria was a nuclear plant. In fact, given the track record of this administration for fabricating intelligence data, such as WMD and biological warfare trailers and Iraqi drones, I wouldn't believe a thing they are saying on this. If you look at the images, they look like they were Photoshopped, and it was a pretty sloppy job too. In addition, if you look at the Israeli reaction (or non-reaction) to this whole affair, one thing you can comfortably conclude is that they did NOT hit a nuclear site, and they know it. When have they ever been this shy about talking about their attacks, especially when it comes to nukes? They were positively crowing about the Entebbe raid, and the raid on Osirak. They have been very vocal about Iran's supposed nuclear threat. The fact that they have been extremely quiet about what they did in Syria, not even saying a peep when the US presented its "proof" about the Syrian facility tells me that they know they didn't hit anything that posed a threat.
2. The attack on Osirak was on a not-quite-finished, unfueled nuclear reactor. That is vastly different from what you are proposing. The Iranian facility is fueled, and the centrifuges are loaded with uranium. Hitting those facilities will make Chernobyl look like a day in the park. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that 3 million people would die in 3 weeks due to radioactive contamination if just the reactor was hit. Add in the centrifuges, and the number grows. And that will permanently contaminate the Iranian oilfields, cutting world usable oil reserves by about half. And must we mention that the fallout will travel for thousands of miles, into places like Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Korea, Japan, and beyond? Is it worth the deaths of millions and millions of people, the permanent loss of a significant percentage of the world's oil supply, the destruction of hundreds of thousands of square miles of agricultural land and the permanent contamination of cities such as Tokyo, New Delhi, Seoul, Mumbai and others just to prove to the world that you have balls of titanium? Not only will the rest of the world not thank us for this great service to mankind, they will hate us with unrestrained passion, and rightfully so. They would be fully justified in treating us as a pariah nation at best, and as an enemy to all mankind at the worst.
Finally, why should we attack Iran instead of Israel? Because if we do it Iran has no reason to hit Israel? That is so ridiculous I can't believe you said it. Do you have any idea how the muslim world sees us? We and Israel are seen as one and the same, joined at the hip, a notion that is only furthered by Hillary's remarks on mass retaliation, or Lieberman's idiotic comments, or Bush's foolish remarks. If we attacked Iran, muslims around the world would see it as simply something done for Israel by their friends, the US. After all, Bush says Israel is our oldest and best ally. Bet the Brits loved hearing that. Way to insult the nation that truly is our oldest and best ally.

It's a real shame that some people who advocate themselves as pro-life have such disdain for diplomacy in everything else. For them bloodshed and more bloodshed is the solution to anything. Like you suggested in your blog history offer us another view of things that war never has solved anything. In the other end talks has made the world a much better place. North Korea in recent memory is a good example of that. I can't wait for Obama to be elected so the world can go back on the pursuit of peace and not false bravado that line the pocket of a few rich people.

" Is it any wonder why the Democrats kicked Joe Lieberman out of the party?"
Regrettably, they didn't.
He *still* has his committee chairmanship (Homeland Security, of all things) and all his cushy perks. He sits in the Democratic Conference/Caucus and is party to the strategy sessions.
He is actually pondering the possibility of his speaking at the Repug convention in nomination of his bosom buddy Mc Cain.
He has no loyalty to anyone but himself. He is a stain on our federal government.

It's worth noting that, despite the uproar of numerous leading Dems, Hillary has remained oddly silent.
I noticed she took the time today to send out a press release about how she's "ahead in the popular vote".
When will we hear her denouncement of these remarks?
I suppose I'll just assume she agrees with the President, Senator McCain, and Joe Lieberman?
After all, she has hurled some of the same criticism at Barack for daring to mention he would meet with leaders of "hostile" nations (one that Hillary went so far as to vote in favor of labeling their military a "terrorist organization"), while at the same time has suggested that she would take the Bush-McCain-Lieberman approach and "totally obliterate" said nations...
