Barry Goldwater was one of the most quoted yet consistently misunderstood politicians in American history. Today, his son Barry Goldwater, Jr. joins Lionel to discuss his new book, Pure Goldwater, a treasure trove of his father’s private insights and personal journal entries. Note: journals are much like primitive “blogs”.
At 11 A.M., Federal Reserve Bank expert and all-around $$$-head Doug Roberts will join Lionel to discuss conspiracy theories surrounding our nation’s economic institutions.
FROM THE ENDLESS CAMPAIGN
Edwards endorses Obama, giving rise to speculation that he’ll be picked as Barack’s VP. Bill Clinton continues to endorse Hillary.
Mrs. Clinton keeps her chin decidedly up, desperately searching for meaning in her meaningless victory in West Virginia. Oh, we’re just joshing ya, Hillary – you go, girl!
News from the broader campaign to dethrone Congressional Republicans: the GOP got STOMPED in Mississippi, and now they’ve done wet themselves with fear. If a heavily Republican district in Mississippi can flip to the Dems, it seems that the GOP has a lot to be scared about. Squeal. Squeal like a pig for me.
IN THE MÉLANGE
George W. Bush is a huge fan of the Austin Powers films, and apparently does a mean impression of Dr. Evil. One's a megalomaniacal jackass; the other appeared in the Austin Powers films.
Dermott and Doobie love a good “Church ‘N State” debate…GO STATES!!! Lionel's home state of Florida may be on the verge of marrying religion and government. It looks like a shotgun wedding to us. Always wear a condom.
And much, much more …

Comment on Keith Olbermann
Lionel,
love your show and listen every day. But I have to agree with Keith Olbermann's comments on Bush JR. Your stand that we (the average Joe) has to show respect for the President. How about the president earn that respect first.
Keith is right. He has the cojones to call it the way it is.
You should listen to him.

Honestly, When I Watched Kieth Last Night, I Will Admit I Thought The Ending Was A Bit Over The Top. However I Feel That It's About Time SOMEONE In The Mass Media Showed Actual Outrage Towards The President's Behaviour. If Elliot Spitzer Had Said He Was Going To Give Up Checkers Because Of All The People Who Die In New York, I'd Expect Someone To Give Him A Shot In The Head. This Was Merely A Verbal Version Of A Slap Across George W's Skull.

Of Lionels obsession with Keith Olberman. His ratings are so low.. I wonder if he is jealous of Olberman?

I love Lionel and Keith both, but I sense an obsession here too. Lionel never mentions the fact that Keith has, on numerous occasions, explained why he uses ERM's classic sign-off, "Good night and good luck." Is an homage really a rip-off?

By DetroiterMay 15, 2008 - 11:28amMay 15th Show, Two Points
I am not in a position to call in, but I had to weigh in on the conversation today. With regard to the Keith Olberman comments: I hate to try to speak for someone else, but I don't get the impression that Lionel is saying that the sentiment is misplaced, simply its delivery. Words are powerful and how you use them can determine whether you can rally people to your cause, or be dismissed as an insane crackpot. I think it would be much more useful if national media figures would ask relevant questions about Bush's actions and policies and actually search for answers, or use their position as national media figures to stand behind someone who opposes the subject of their rage. So, anyway, despite the fact that I am bound to look back at this post later and see miriad negative comments with regard to my thought processes, I am with Lionel on this one. There is a way to speak so that people will hear the content of your message and not just the volume of your voice. Secondly, I wanted to comment on the Follow The Fed book. I now cannot wait to read it. I recently took an economics course for professional development purposes and found that it changed my outlook on many things, not just the dollars in my bank account. Gaining a greater understanding of economics and how our financial systems function would benefit anyone, even those not interested in active participation in the markets. Thanks are due Lionel for opening up these conversations and guiding people to credible sources in their search for honest information.

Still diagree Lionel, the bug remains up your butt. I also said "YEA!!" when he told the Shrub to shut the hell up. You're dead wrong on Olbermann. This choir needs boosting, we need Olbermann.

I am a fan of Lionel. Although I only started listening to him since he joined Air America, I find his show entertaining to no end. Having said that, Lionel has a way of taking an opinion and ramming it down my throat which I find a little irritating. On the Olbermann argument, I could NOT disagree w/ Lionel’s position more...
Keith was speaking on behalf of the dead - over 4000 - and the families left behind, thanks to this war. If it is inappropriate to get emotional, even to the point that Olbermann did, over the needless death of 4000 of our best and brightest, then when is it?
That’s all I had to say.

By Angry ManMay 15, 2008 - 12:00pmRespect for the Office of the President?...
...with Bush still in that office, that SHIP HAS SAILED...sadly, Lionel was not on it with Bush.
Lionel would be better off being introspective than giving Keith any advice. Quite honestly Lionel is not worthy of picking up Keith's papers flung on the floor
With impeachment "off the table," Bush, with little regard for the Office, calling the U.S. Constitution "just a damn piece of paper" and lying about his sacrifice, SAY IT LOUD, Keith--"SHUT THE HELL UP Bush. You are an embarassment as are any of your defenders "carrying water."
PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSE RETURN SAM SEDER TO THIS TIME SLOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By CeeCeefieldMay 15, 2008 - 12:04pmI too think your take on
I too think your take on Olbermann is wrong. First of all, you played only the "controversial" last sentence several times, accompanied by your comments. Okay, we get your point. But isn't that kind of like what the MSM did to Howard Dean over some mis-heard overexuberance in 2004? Also, the video, and the quote, don't seem to be picking up the negative legs you assured us they would. Crooks & Liars, the unofficial archive for Olbermann's rants, was 100% in favor of this piece. And finally, as you admit, he was right. Truth has been carrying a lot of weight lately.
All this notwithstanding, keep up the entertaining commentary.

By dschermMay 15, 2008 - 12:07pmAh, Lionel
Lionel,
At least Keith Obermann says SOMETHING about the disaster that is GWB. At least he seems to give a damn about what Smirky is doing to this country. You, on the other hand, are so OBSESSED with getting your video feed working that you can barely talk about anything else in the first 20 minutes of your show. You should really move to AM drive time. I think the 'comedy' that passes for your show would be much more appreciated there. Give me back my Seder. AA is no place for Lionel The Clown.

By the jaco pastor...May 15, 2008 - 2:13pmWTF you're dissappointed with Keith?!?
Hello Lionel,
There is no dissenting voice on television President Bush has what a 28 percent approval rating and still the mainstream aka corporate media has by omission deceived the American people.
I am a 20 year, week and 3 day veteran of regular army and now a full time cop in the arm pit of Austin Texas.
Maybe Keith violated the principles of debate but we are not part of the debate I am lost everyday that I see good people standby and do nothing. Keith got pissed, emotional, Keith got involved good for him but he is still about the only one on television.
The main stream media is ineffective as they standby and allow terms line “enhanced interrogation” and flag pins to be the national debate while people are dying. Billions of dollars in cash come up missing, thousands of barrels of oil are being stolen and where the hell did my rights to privacy go, oh, and the right to due process and on and on………
I love you in the non-prison shower sense of the word and I lobbied for months to get you on Air America. I cannot support the weak, irresponsible, worthless, or ineffective argument. It may not have been completely effective but it dam sure FELT GOOD!
One last thing the best producer ever was the janitor who worked with you at Eyada I miss the duck calls.
You are still great Ron

By yehezkelMay 15, 2008 - 3:36pmI get a email from Air America asking me to listen to this Jerk!
Imagine my surprise when Air America puts spam in my inbox featuring Lionel Vision only to find that Lionel has a deeply conservative vision. He loves Pat Buchanan and praises William F Buckley Jr., and helps promote a book about Goldwater? And then Lionel rails against Keith Olbermann for not respecting the office of the President, because we are suppose to be so kind to that murdering, thieving, idiot George Bush. And then on top of that, he constantly refers to Barack Obama as "Barry" because, although he can't bring himself to show the same level of respect for someone who will one day hold the office of President that he demands Keith Olbermann should observe, he will demand it for chuckle nuts and for all the conservative values he supports, loves and praises.
Well count me out! Lionel is nothing but a wolf in sheep’s clothing! I am finished with Air America for now and forever! I can not support a radio station that will likely endorse John McCain for President come this November. No way, I just can't do it.

By brian_l_raneyMay 15, 2008 - 5:43pmBoner and Uranus jokester has the balls to criticize Olbermann
I usually love Air America and have little experience with Lionel, but after tonight I just will have to tune out. A host who relies on fart jokes may have a difficult time with someone with a real vocabulary. Obviously some real envy there. Love Olbermann. He speaks truth to power. I personally would have used a four letter word a bit strong than hell. That is why I don't have a talk show.

Fart jokes? I love Lionel and even a bad fart joke is incredibly entertaining for me. Lionel also is a master of the double entendre and I love all this non-fart humor as well. If you want to understand Lionel, may I suggest you visit and study this website: http://facstaff.uww.edu/shiblesw/humorbook/
I strongly disagree with his opinion of Olbermann, but I'm not going to abandon him because of it. I'm just going to bitch about it here a lot.

Lionel:
If I told you to go f**** yourself in a nice tone of voice would it be considered a lesser insult?
I used to love your show but am recently growing increasingly weary of it. You often criticize Olberman for being supportive of Obama while you are equally and OBVIOUSLY biased towards Hillary. You now have the gall to cry because Olberman shows JUSTIFIED emotion in his assessment of Bush's actions?!! You accuse Olberman of not respecting the office of the President when not once did he refer to "the office" but always referred to Mr. Bush (I don't know why we have to even respect this traitor enough to justify calling him "Mr."). "Anti-American Bush" is the one who MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE does not "respect" the office of President. If Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi had half of the courage, conviction, and anger that Olberman had we wouldn't be in this mess. I have also heard you criticize Reid for not showing any "life" in his presentations. Does that not make you a hypocrite?
You have been angry at Olberman (who you used to praise) ever since he showed support for Obama. I too used to like Hillary, but during this campaign she has shown her true colors including a complete lack of character. Now you have done the same. Obama is saturated with character and a blind man could see that. But admitting that you were wrong would be entirely against YOUR egotistical character, and you have the stupidity and lack of insight to accuse of Olberman of being an egotist!!! You also condemn him for repeating Morrow's closing line. As a person who listens to both your show and Olberman's EVERY day (podcast), I have heard Olberman praise Morrow and give him credit for the closing line on several occassions. He says it as a tribute to Morrow, as he has acknowledged. It is my understanding that "the monkey's dead" was not your original words. Did you "steal" your closing line?
So in closing, please don't take this the wrong way, as I say it with love and in a nice tone of voice, but Lionel, GO F*** YOURSELF!!!!
