Republican humor

I've always considered myself a failure as a
human being, because despite my desire to understand others, regardless
of their station in life or their culture, I've never been able to
appreciate the types of jokes that Republicans and conservatives find
so highly amusing. You know the ones I mean. Jokes with a small dose of
violence and murderous intimidation at their core, like this, for
example:
Maybe it's some character flaw in me, some genetic defect, but I just
doesn't get the giggles when conservative friends and acquaintances
respond with a little light eliminationist comedic repartee regarding
liberals, Latinos, African Americans, environmentalists, feminists and,
in general, anyone who doesn't hold views which are exactly like their
own. Case in point: Governor Mike Huckabee's recent stand up routine at
the National Rifle Association convention, where he apparently brought the house down with this crack about Senator, and presumptive Democratic nominee, Barack obama:
ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former GOP hopeful and
Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is back in the news this week, making a
splash when he took a hit at Senator Barack Obama during the annual
National Rifle Association meeting.
Huckabee made an off-color joke during his speech in Louisville,
Kentucky, when a loud bang was heard off-stage."That was Barack Obama," Huckabee quipped, "He Just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak. Somebody aimed a gun at him and he…he dove for the floor."
Now, I know Huckabee has since apologized for his remarks,
but one wonders why he bothered. Clearly he believes remarks regarding
the potential assassination of a prominent African American politician
is simply one of the most hilarious comments he could have made to
members of the NRA, and many of his fellow conservatives obviously
agree, or they wouldn't keep telling us that similar "jokes" by Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly
are legitimate sources of humor, which we politically correct and
pompous liberals simply don't get because we take ourselves way too
seriously.
Me, I tend to think this kind of thing in an America filled with millions of angry gun owners who sincerely believe Democrats and liberals are out to pry their shotguns, pistols and hunting rifles
from their "cold dead hands" is beyond the pale. Certainly, I don't
think liberals making jokes about assassinating President Bush or
Senator McCain would or should be considered in any way acceptable, nor
do I suspect that most conservatives would disagree with me. Yet,
somehow jokes about killing Democratic politicians and other liberal
figures is fair game for conservative comics. I think both are equally
reprehensible and repulsive. And most definitely not funny.
But then I laugh at stuff like Monty Python routines so what do I know.

What, I thought that is what they want to do....
"Me, I tend to think this kind of thing in an America filled with millions of angry gun owners who sincerely believe Democrats and liberals are out to pry their shotguns, pistols and hunting rifles from their "cold dead hands" is beyond the pale"
Why would conservatives think such a thing? Because the Liberals have demonstrated a behaviour, exaclty like that, in NYC, Wash DC, and many more local areas of Liberals hot beds.
But, I agree I don't think that jokes about assasinations, be it Obama or Hillary are funny. That is sick. Same for comments like that about McCain or Bush. Once you cross that threshold, you are no longer talking politics, you are talking about mentally ill individuals.

Really? By whom? I have seen a great many posts calling for impeachments and prison time, but I don't recall anyone calling for the assassination of Bush or any one of his cronies.

You don't get the joke because you're a Godless Liberal. You have to believe in God, like Huckabee does, to get the finer nuances of that humor.

By Pookie2112May 20, 2008 - 9:31amGun control is not just an evil plot by liberals...
..it has general support from almost anyone who is concerned that the unsatisfactory comparison between US quality of life compared to and developed country that does control access to guns. It is supported by traditionally non-liberal professional groups such as police and district attorneys, or almost anyone interested in having a civil society, or simply the majority of the populations of the cities and communities that have tied to determine their own community safety and quality of life such as those you mentioned.
The wing-nuts has repeated the phrase so many times they do not stop to think of how off based the assumption is that control support is limited to some small radical conspiracy hell bent on denying the majority from having an irrational gun and violence obsession. Just like the often repeated but utterly false claim that people need guns to protect their family. Every statistic proves that those same people are hundreds or thousands of times more likely to kill a family member than a stranger seeking to harm those same family members. But irrational people armed to the teeth have little regard of logic, facts or the safety of their own family let alone the safety of their community.
That is a major reason quality of life, lack of levels of daily fear or unlikelihood of death or grievous harm to members of their family is so superior in civilized countries such as all of Europe, Japan etc. Their live expectancy, crime rates, quality of life and level of education, along with all other major indicators of a civil society are surely superior to the US, partly due to the massive gun distribution among irrational and obsessive people in the US. People who care about such thing and their families support controls on guns, those concerns are not just held by "liberals" but the majority of liberals do support controls for the same reason they are better educated, think more maturely and deeply about issues of their lives, it is a philosophy that tends to be more attractive to informed, thoughtful people.

Can you put anyone public figure's name in the punch line?

I get it. So the joke would work better using someone like Bush instead of Obama. Because Obama is smart and would dive for the floor. If someone pointed a gun at bush he would be too stupid to know what to do. And he would be wetting himself besides.

Aren't you watching TV??
Don't you see how hillary has already stopped attacking Obama, EVEN COMING TO HIS DEFENSE.
It's time to UNITE. Hillary, to her credit (and my surprise) is getting with the program, getting on board, and getting ready to help Barack Obama KICK REPUBLICAN ASS.

LMAO
Huff thinks he has a point with his 29k number. But he admits there are states that you can't count because they only had caucuses.
How can you put any value on popular vote when you can't get the total?
Image 49 states did caucuses and one state did a primary. And Hillary won the primary state by 29,000. These bozos would be in here telling us she won the popular vote.
It is a meaningless number. You can't count MI and FL and you can't count caucus states. The only true measure is total delegates. And Obama will announce in a week that he has won because he will have more delegates than she can mathematically reach.

By gt6May 18, 2008 - 6:27pmAnd she'll STILL stay in the race.
"there's no nominee, yet" as she so eloquently puts it. Like that justifies her staying in - regardless that she's behind in EVERYTHING, since there hasn't been a NEWSFLASH, she's in it UNTIL THE END.
She insists on beating the beyond dead horse ... and I thought she was a smart woman.

By roadgoddessMay 18, 2008 - 10:14am"Wet Starting" your jet is a way of showing off that McCain...
Thought was funny. It got 134 of his fellow navy personnel killed from the fire that broke out on deck as a result. McCain was the only person immediately transfered off the ship...I mean before the other sailors even got medical care. He was probably laughing all the way to his next assignment. Nice to have Admirals for Pas and Grand-pas. He's so funny, should have seen the jet officer in the plane behind his eat that fire stream...hysterical.
Torture is funny to these guys. What kind of a brain does Huckabee have to even go there? Was he just so desperate for applause that he just had to find someway to try to put Obama down? Most Liberals I know own guns...just not assault rifles.
It isn't a question so much of Huck's comments being tasteless, It's more a matter of what kind of insane mind thinks like this? The NRA has an entourage of McCain, Rove and Huckabee embarrassing them? Who would want to belong to a group that would honor these people especially since they have done nothing to advance the NRA's interests? As long as it appears to attack liberals they like it. It's the lynch mob mentality.

By bjobottsMay 18, 2008 - 11:50amTrying to nominate Hillary was the dumbest move ever.
1. The Clintons have more negatives than anyone. The right wing spin machine came about because of them.
2. We all saw Kerry try to sluggishly respond to the right wing flip-flop talking point concerning the Iraq war vote. The idiots want a repeat of that. Of course Hillary tried to counter that by coming out all hawkish and saying the vote was a good idea. And Iran better watch it. What a tool she is.
3. She is arrogant. She thought this nomination was all hers from the start. That is why she foolishly spent over a 100 million dollars early in the campaign and put herself 20 million dollars in debt.
