I just paid $1.98 per gallon of gas...
call me a conspiracy theorist, but isn't the timing of this low pricing just a tad suspicious? Who do you think Big Oil would rather have as president?
I predicted exactly that several months ago
The same thing happened in 2006. Prices bottomed out at the end of Oct and were back where they had been 6 months later.
That said, 1.98 is pretty extreme considering it is still over 2 bucks in NJ and we are usually among the lowest, but we are not a swing state.

I paid $2.599/gal today. The price was over $4 at it's peak here.
So this means that the average shmoe...
...can still drive his/her car, even if he/she can't pay his/her mortgage, and thus at the end of the day has no place to drive to.

Please take the opportunity to tell Obama that we expect the constitution to be reenacted. It is not enough to say we got democrats elected and the job is done. The damage Bush has done to our constitutional rights needs to be repaired. If Obama and the congress do nothing on this issue, then they are no worse than the republicans. Many of us would see it as a sign of the democrats running on an issue to get votes rather than do something about the problem. Pleas tell him many of us won't assume that we can relax now because the democrats are in office. We'll be watching to see what is done in Washington and expecting results.
Obama is right when he says we need to look to the future. But that does not mean we can ignore the damage done to our nation in recent years. We cannot allow illegal wire tapping of citizens for instance, to continue because we are looking to the future and oh well, let's just move on.
Actually it would be a great service to our nation if Obama reminded people to continue being politically active and aware after the election. That they should hound their elected representatives and senators of either party to do the right thing in order to avoid stagnation and corruption in Washington. This is good for the party and the nation.

If Senator Obama builds on the momentum, if he excites our awakened citizens to stay involved, if he leads this country as a vibrant informed democracy then I think he will be "allowed" to make much needed change. We need to continue to supply his "political capital" So it is up to him to inspire involvement and support and up to us to provide it. Change will happen.

I think you are very naive to believe that Obama is this great person who is going to correct all of our problems just because he says so. Just remember Obama's words that he will not raise taxes on certain individuals who do not make over 250,000 dollars. What do you think will happen when he raises taxes on individuals who make over that amount? These people own the businessess, they create the jobs! Your prices will go up because they will make their profit margins. Obama is playing on words. Money will leave your paycheck due to higher prices! Either way you have less money. Your taxes will go up when those Bush tax cuts expire! Obama will not raise your taxes, but he will not keep those tax cuts but then the amount of your paycheck will diminish due to your taxes going up.
Illegal wiretapping? Do you know the actual steps that it takes to get a title III (T-III) wiretap? I'll explain, first, your first line supervisor has to approve it, then his, and then his. Basically three levels of approval within a federal law enforcement agency. Then it goes to an assistant united states attorney, who then has to approve it. After that, the judge has to sign for it. That's five levels of approval and then the telecommunications company has to determine that these agencies have the correct equipment to work with the telecommunications systems. It is not as easy as you make it sound in your comments. And besides, in order to go through all those steps, agencies better know that the people they are targeting are "bad guys". If not, you just let your agency know that you (law enforcement person) are a knucklehead and good luck ever getting permission again on a T-III.
Finally, taking money from people who earn their money and giving it to someone who has not earned it is SOCIALISM. It's as if you are going to school and making "A's". The teacher then tells you that because you have made good grades and someone else in the class is making "F's", we are going to take your "A" and give you a "C" and then give the person who is making an "F" we will then give them a "C" to "even things out". It makes no sense when you put the hard work in to make that "A".
People in this country have lost their way. We should have a slogan in "AMERICA". Work hard and reap the benefits of your labor. Do nothing and receive nothing!!

As far as illegal wire tapping goes, you having been paying attention. The FISA courts have been basically done away with. So I don't know what you mean by being careful what I wish for. I just want the constitution to be respected once again.
And as for the "taking money from people" this is just more right wing desperation. Why don't you just trot out the socialism talking point?

Do you make over $250K a year? If you do, your taxes will go from 36 to 39%, right where they were during the prosperous '90's; if you don't, you will actually be getting a tax cut!
I think the point of the 'illegal' in 'illegal wire tapping' comes from the fact that the current moron-in-chief bypassed FISA, hence, the outrage over not obtaining the proper legal court orders in order to wire tap suspected terrorists. And, the further outrage is from the fact that it wasn't just 'suspected terrorists' that the government were wire tapping but ... our own soldiers calling their loved ones from overseas. You may remember that in the not too distant past, reports surfaced that our government was listening in, and taping, said PRIVATE phone conversations between our troops and their families, and sharing them amoungst themselves for 'shits and giggles'.
Now, can you really tell me that the government conducted these wire taps, legally? If so, why would the government need to listen in on our own TROOPS private phone calls? Why would the government need to tape said phone calls?? Especially in light of the fact that the moron-in-chief has publicly stated on MANY ocassions that 'we don't wire tap American citizens phone calls'?
As far as your socialism 'argument' - taxes in general are socialism - doesn't the government take our taxes and give it to others in the form of Social Security, Medicare, the recent Wall Street bailout? And, if history serves me correctly, it was Reagan who instituted the progressive tax system, which tax rates were actually higher then than they are now. The socialism argument is weak at best and pathetic at worst. Even McFailin and Painful have stopped using that very weak talking point.

Let me explain something to you- Republicans represent big business and the rich (Bush's base) and Democrats represent the middle class and the poor. It has always been this way (in recent history). It is the natural struggle between the rich and the poor.
The United States, just like everything else that Bush has been in charge of (oil companies, baseball teams) has been run into the ground. Bush and his cronies have skewed the wealth of this country to the wealthy and large corporations, the middle class has lost ground over the last eight years. My hope is that we get eight years of Obama in office so he can help the middle class and the poor like Clinton did in the 1990's. Remember the 1990's, a pretty good economic period.
I see that you are a victim of right wing spin. Raising taxes on the top 1% of the incomes and lowering taxes on the the middle class is not socialism, it is the normal adjustment to the tax codes to make the system fair for all. The middle class has been squeezed hard the last eight years and they need a break.
Do you make $250,000 per year or more? If you do, I do not blame you for being irrated that your taxes are being raised. My wife and I may hit $250,000 this year, I am not happy about paying more taxes, but on the other hand I know that we have a lot more disposable income than the average family so I am not too upset. Derwin, if you make less than $250,000 you are going to have more take home pay if Obama is president. I hope you are not one of those morons (sorry but I cannot think of a better word) that I see booing at a McCain speech when he says that Obama is going to spread the wealth around, let me translate for you; he is saying that Barack is going to lower your taxes if you are middle class. Senator Obama has been calling for a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq that now matches the thoughts of military experts and Iraqi leaders. Senator McCain still won’t offer a timeline for withdrawal. The sooner we responsibly withdraw from Iraq the sooner we can relieve the strain on our military and begin to strengthen our state of military readiness for any future threat and go after Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. For our soldiers, for economic strength and for our security we must stop spending $10 billion a month in Iraq and redeploy our troops.

While making
phone calls for Obama at our local Democratic office I got the cell phone of a local young man serving in the Marine Corp and stationed in Virginia. We talked quite a while, he asked me to do what I could to get them (our soldiers) out of Iraq. He told me that it's just not the deaths, but that they were coming back all messed up, families breaking apart, marriages ending. I told him, through my tears and his, I was working hard to get Obama in office but that after we did, we would push and push for an end in Iraq. I hope all of you, and Rachel, will help me push and push.

I lived in New York City for a quarter-century, where the mass transit infrastructure wasn't torn apart by Big Auto and Big Oil - and it's kind of amazing how seldom you actually need a car when subway and bus service is ubiquitous.
I don't mean the token "public transit" of a bus every half hour during peak times that stops for the night at 1 am, and drops you off a half-mile from your home like in most cities. I mean real mass transit that runs 24/7 with enough buses and subways arriving constantly to carry a major city's population to and from work every day, and reaches into every part of the city so there's always a nearby bus, local rail or subway stop.
In cities with robust mass transit systems like New York City, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago, a "normal" working- or middle-class person doesn't need a car to get to work or the store every day, and can frankly do quite well without one most of the time. For those occasions when they want a car to drive out of town or to haul big loads, there's auto and van rental places. For short distances like the local market or coffee shop, walking isn't an issue since they are truly local - not a mile or so's drive away like they are in Central NY where we're living now, and which desperately needs a mass transit system worthy of the name.
It's not some "Marxist Socialist Dreamworld", Mr. Beefy Humvee-Lusting Right-Winger - it's how gloriously messy, vibrant and alive civilization works in large cities the world over. When I go back to NYC, I ditch our car in the hotel garage and get back to the MTA - because that is how people get around in a proper city.

In rallys for Obama, he adresses the economy,....in rallies for McCain,..he calls Obama names! Is he coherent,......or a babbling fool, ready for an institution! I worked at an intstitution for the Mentally Ill, and have alot of respect for someone needing help, to try and function with this disability, also, I have a tremendous amount of respect for our elderly, I myself am on that rode, at age 55! But we don't need a President, with special needs, such as understanding the English language, or understanding what the Presidents job is. It isn't calling our oppenents names, it is talking about the differences, and showing the listener why we are opponents. What McCain has done this past month, is become part of the problem, and not part of the solution, because, we don't really have a choice, considering , Obama has a plan, and McCain does not! I would vote for Obama, even if he had no plan, because to me, McCain isn't a real choice for the most powerful country on the planet, or certainly not a choice for a solution to our current economic crisis!

Reagan introduced the earned income tax credit.
The credit sends big checks to low income people who do not pay income tax. Reagan believed in spreading the wealth by taking money from tax payers and giving it to non tax payers. Reagan was a socialist.
Palin believes in spreading the wealth by sending everyone in Alaska a check for oil royalties. She says EVERYONE owns ALL the land collectively. That is communism. Palin is a communist.

How stupid is it to be OK with a president who claims to speak to God yet goes against all of Jesus' teachings, but object to someone who has never made such a claim and then label him with loaded words such as "messiah" and "savior" in order to mock him and his followers. This is classic projection. You think your elite little group of oligarchs will save you by tinkling down their golden shower on you. While they rob the lower classes, you listen to their screams of wealth redistribution...as if taking all the wealth for themselves and hoarding it, even though they can't possibly use it all, isn't redistribution.
You're being peed on and robbed. We're just trying to stop that from happening. If letting the lower 95% of the income earners keep more of their money and tax those that have the most more is "wealth distribution," so is giving them huge tax breaks and bailouts( with OUR taxes) when they can't run their businesses. If you like seeing the infrastructure crumble around you as a result of the golden pee, we don't agree with that. We think our taxes should go to us, not those who need it the least.
What has the golden pee cost us? Increased taxes for the next three generations. I'm tired of paying for people who think of us as scum and do everything they can to take everything we own. They are vampires.

What is a maverick
Just wanted to see if anyone has noted that the traditional definition of a "maverick" is a lost calf that tends to get into trouble such as getting caught in a fence, stuck in the mud, etc.
