New Bin Laden Tape

CBS News has the details:
Al Qaeda boss Osama bin Laden says the decline of America's dominance on the world stage was one of the main factors which prompted Israel to launch its offensive in Gaza.
"The great and swift decline in America's influence is one of the most important motivations for Israelis to wage such a barbaric attack on Gaza, in a bid to try and make use of the last days of (President) Bush's mandate and the neo-conservatives," he says.
The message was delivered in a speech downloaded Wednesday by CBS News from a Web site frequently used to disseminate al Qaeda propaganda. The audio was produced by al Qaeda's media wing, as-Sahab.
It was impossible to confirm the authenticity of the recording, but the voice appeared to be that of the terror group's leader. The audio has not been heard before. The last known audio address from bin Laden was released on May 18, 2008.
The audio, about 22 minutes long, is titled: "A Call for Jihad to Stop the Aggression on Gaza. The message of Sheikh Osama Bin Laden to the Muslim Ummah."
"Israelis are in a rush to get rid of their enemies in Gaza, and replace them with (Palestinian President Mahmoud) Abbas and his administration, in order for him to protect their backs. They thus carried out this horrific butchery before the end of Bush's term in office before the American weakness shows even more."
Its release came on the 19th day of Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip targeting Hamas militants, which Palestinian doctors say has left 940 people dead, less than half of whom were combatants.

If Obama doesn't give much thought to OBL
Will the right wingers be up in arms?
Or will they be up in arms if suddenly the President of the US is actually giving him much thought?
They seemed just fine when Bush was ignoring him.
Bush claims in his latest interview that he doesn't know if we
ever got close to killing or capturing Bin Laden, but he is confident that he will be caught eventually. In other words, Bin Laden wasn't important enough to him that he was kept up to date on efforts to locate and kill or capture him. Either we were never close, as I think it's likely he would have been notified if Bin Laden was in someone's sights, or he's just plain lying.

I vote for lying, although I do not know why.

Lying was the lesser of two evils
If he says that we were close to getting OBL at Tora Bora, then the question would be "why did we fail?". By saying he has no idea if we were ever close, it makes him look dimwitted and uniformed, which we have all seen for 8 years. Go with what you know, W!

How can Bush have no idea if we were close? He has command of the intelligence agencies and the military.
So with those resources he doesn't know if we were close to getting OBL but he was absolutely certain about a nuclear weapons program in Iraq when others such as the IAEA were saying "wait a minute, that's not true".
To someone not paying attention, Malloy can come across as over the edge. But I think Malloy is right when he describes Bush as sociopathic.
There are plenty of reasons to think Bush is a sociopath
I believe that Dr. Frank came to that conclusion in his book, "Bush on the Couch". As a true sociopath, he has no concept of other people being thinking, feeling creatures, but sees them only as tools to be used. Lying means nothing to him, because the creatures he is deceiving aren't like him. The entire Bush crime family has shown a real disregard for anyone but themselves and for acheiving wealth and power. That's why Bush's granddaddy was involved in plotting a coup against FDR, and continued to trade with the Nazis even after the US entered the war against them.

I was thinking something similar. I figured he'd think he'd look stupider to admit we were very close, but leadership tanked the deal and we never came close again. Just one more prime example of things that almost went right for the Bush presidency, but were bungled tremendously right at the decisive moment by amazingly inept leadership.
