Dr. George Carlo is the nation's pre-eminent expert on cell phone safety. He is the author of "Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age: An Insider's Alarming Discoveries about Cancer and Genetic Damage."

Dr. Carlo is an epidemiologist, author, and attorney. From 1993 to 1999 he headed Wireless Technologies Research, LLC, a 28 million dollar research program funded by the cellular phone industry that investigated the possible health effects of cellular phones. It initially found that there were no significant health threats posed by such devices, but by February 1999 he had changed his mind and now believes that such threats (including the production of micronuclei, leakage of the blood-brain barrier, and cancers of the auditory nerve) do exist.

Carlo is the founder and chairman of the Science and Public Policy Institute (incorporated in 1994, and based in Washington, D.C.) and its sub-project, the Safe Wireless Initiative

He has appeared on 20/20, 60 Minutes, World News Tonight, and CBS News with Dan Rather, as well as CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC.

Letter To AT&T Chairman C. Michael Armstrong From WTR Chairman Dr. George L. Carlo

This letter reveals that the occurrence of brain cancer and certain types of tumors among cellular phone users is twice that of non-users. Dr. Carlo is requesting AT&T's assistance to distribute this information to consumers so that they can make an "informed judgment about how much of this unknown risk they wish to assume in their use of wireless phones."
