Today on Doing Time - Monday August 18th

THE PURPOSE DRIVEN CANDIDATESBoth Presidential candidates pandered to the evangelicals this weekend. Did you like seeing their religious sides? Do you think they have to show their love for Jesus to get elected? And if so, should they do more of it? We’ll have plenty of clips for you from the forum on faith hosted by megapastor Rick Warren. Should a forum like this even exist? Also, did McCain cheat at the faith forum by eavesdropping on Obama’s answers when he should have been in the Cone of Silence. ONE DICTATOR FEWERPresident Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan resigns. This is a man who came to power by force of a coup, was pressured into returning Pakistan to democracy and will now step down because of democratic pressure – why can't he just go back to dictatorship? Does this mean he is actually a democrat? What does it mean for the hunt for Osama Bin Laden? Or the chances of Pakistan electing a more US friendly leader? Would you prefer a hostile democracy there to a friendly dictatorship? We’ll discuss. Here’s a fascinating piece on the history to get you thinking. VEEPSTAKESWell it’s getting down to the wire before the Democratic Convention next week, so we should have a VP candidate named any day now. We’ll run down the short list and let you tell us who you want, or don’t want, before Obama makes a decision. We’ll see if he’s listening. We think he is because he’s taking Kuby’s advice on getting tougher with McCain. Check out these harsh words from Obama. Plus … the latest from the battle in Georgia, the Olympics, why a publisher is avoiding a book on Muhamed, and how hard it is to prosecute Blackwater and much much more …

I must say that I'm

I must say that I'm extremely upset and offended by the whole notion that the church is seeking to entangle itself further and further into the politics of this nation.

Now, I'm both an evangelical Christian and a homosexual - certainly not a "mainstream Christian."

Imagine my shock and anger when I heard the Christian radio station I normally listen to bragging about how the church is taking an "active part in the government."

The founding fathers sought VEHEMENTLY to prevent the entanglement of church in state. They did this to protect church from state AND state from church.

It is absolutely undeniably WRONG to allow the church to involve itself in politics to this degree. We are edging closer and closer to a church controlled state and I shudder to think what will happen when "Main Stream" Christian denominations start using society and law to dictate there version of morality to everybody. Imagine how life will change for me and my partner if these "main stream" "radical Christians" take over the law.

Point in fact .... A THEOCRACY IS A DICTATORSHIP!

This "church" opinion and its efforts to involve itself in these political happenings is disgraceful, and most certainly sinful.

They have the right

A church has a right to ask candidates to come to forum if they want to. As a non-believer of any religion, I found Rick Warren non-threatening unlike most evangelical pastors. He appeared even-handed, and form his reactions I thought he liked Obama about equally well as McCain. Amid all the punditry afterwards, I'm surprised no one picked up on Obama's statement that the problem with the US Supreme Court is it's willingness to defer to executive power at the expense of the other branches. That could have come from a netroots blogger, and as someone angered by his FISA vote, I feel better about him.

Regarding Warren, I must add that my impression of him was before I heard that he had said the questions would be about poverty and the environment instead of abortion and gay marriage. I'm hoping he didn't know McCain wasn't in his cone of silence, because he certainly tried to leave the impression that such was the case. If the mainstream media picks up this story, then the story of the forum will be the allegation that McCain cheated, and that can only help Obama. We know the Republicans would be running with it.

SADDLE UP AT SADDLEBACK

Ron .. i can appreciate how you thought Obama was " making a mistake ' this past weekend because he was " trying to have a rational conversation with IRRATIONAL people." .. " subjecting himself to answering questions of the supernatural .."
However, I agree more with one of your callers who said that Obama would have looked weak and evasive if he had declined. Evangelicals are McCain's base ..and BAM showed alot of courage entering the lion's den. It also helped debunk the myth that he is a Muslim.
I think one of Obama's best responses was that evil DOES exist in this world, mentioning Darfur and even brutal domestic violence that exists in the United States, that this should be recognized and steps should be taken to deal with this fact.

Fortunately this Pastor Warren is faily sane and moderate compared wtih the more lunatic fringe element in the Christian Right which is out of touch with reality and operate much like cults.

I think the previous post made an excellent point that although this event was taylor made for McCain, what people will mainly come away with was that McCain cheated about the 'cone of silence " ..

Chief .. the cone doesn't seem to be working in the limo .. shut up Max and take some notes !

Blackwater 17 .. iraqi civilians ..0

Did the Blackwater " contractors " say regarding the group of Iraqis they opened fire on that they had intel that they had Weapons of Mass Destruction ?
Perhaps they met Mo Atta in Germany for coffee.

The Blackwater contractor's will ultimately be protected by Iraqi law.. hmmm
Alex " What Iraqi Law? "
Ron " the one the United States imposed on them "

I agree Ron .. just another reason for Iraqis to hate America.
