Today on Doing Time - Tuesday July 22nd, 2008

By Alex G.

Guess which city will be voting on whether or not to decriminalize prostitution. That’s right, San Francisco. And the sex worker activists behind the ballot push are also trying to unionize “working girls” and legalize … mostly. Maxine Doogan, founder of the Erotic service Providers Union will join Kuby.

Barack Obama is stealing the headlines, and news anchors too, from Iraq and the rest of the Middle East. Would they press have been so gaga over a McCain trip? Is the trip boosting the Democrat’s foreign policy credentials? Or just reminding us he needs to boost his foreign policy credentials?

Chris Cilizza from the Washington Post will help us assess the trip.

Also, should a hospital be allowed to discriminate in hiring? What if it is to prevent someone who refuses to perform an abortion from working there? A slow grumble on the Hill is growing over this very question. And it ain’t an easy one to answer.

And much much more including Bosnian war crimes and how quickly we forget them, weird McCain gaffes, the cubicle turns 40 and much much more …

I think prostitution is criminalized to keep money out of the ha

hands of the women by male society. Gives women power cause virtually no man can do the same job, and The Male Ego doesnt like that. Makes men feel bad cause virtually no men could pull off an 8 hour shift. And forget about overtime. The chaffing would be.... Ill stop before I get into a run of really bad jokes. But ask The Bunny Ranch owner Dennis Hoff for a better explaination than I can give. But that's it. Its a solely female dominated industry if it's legal, and insecure male society can't hack it. Cant deal with it. Same thing with marijuana prohibition, but differenet groups are at play, divided on/by psychology and pathology, and other stuff rather than gender in marijuana's case.

Regarding prostitution

Hello Mr Kuby,
Apologies ahead of time for poor grammer and possible spelling mistakes!

Even though I often disagree with you, maybe a little more then %50 of the time, I enjoy your show I find your style entertaining and your banter is very informative, and even when I strongly disagree with your conclusions I do get the sense your opinions are sincere and based on a great deal of thought.
On the question of prostitution I have to say that I believe it should be legalized for several reasons;

1) The dangers associated with prostitution is greatly aggravated by the fact that the illegal nature of the profession prevents women from reporting incidents of rape and abuse.

2) the same condition means women "and some men" are forced to work in usually filthy conditions, with no security leaving them fully at the mercy of whoever they are with. legalized unionized sex work would allow for cleaner facilities with a means of holding customers accountable for anything they may do.

3) The basic right of a human being to do what he or she wants with his or her own body, Frankly the thought of the government telling people what sexual activity is acceptable sounds frighteningly republican.

Hospital discrimination policy

Hi Ron,

Just catching the last hour of yesterday's show this morning and you asked whether this is just a ploy to discriminate against a woman's right to choose. I would say that yes, it is. Having said that, even though the motives are clearly not what the policy presents itself as, I think that it is a good policy. With a couple of caveats.

I'm pro-choice, but I can certainly understand and respect people being anti-abortion for themselves and I don't think that I have the right to make them do something that is in stark contrast with their principles.

However, If you are to work in health care, you have to put your personal beliefs to the side when advising a patient on their needs. This means that an anti-choice person must be required to express all commonly accepted medical options to their patients, regardless of whether they conflict with their own philosophy.

Hospitals should not be allowed to discriminate against anti-abortion applicants, EXCEPT where the position REQUIRES engaging in an activity that conflicts with their beliefs. Hospitals should not be allowed to purge an applicant based on this if they can reasonably manage to offer the procedures with other staff. That is to say, a small health clinic that has two nurses on staff that provides abortions clearly should be allowed to decline hiring an anti-abortion applicant as it would significantly impact the ability of the clinic to operate. A large hospital that can accommodate such staff and still provide the full range of services should be required to do so.

I would add that any practitioner that fails to provide all reasonable and industry accepted information to patients because some of it conflicts with their personal beliefs should lose their license. My $.02.

The honor of the Oldest Profession

Oh yes, so female graduate students come on to disgusting bankers, and other related businessmen earn precious dollars to pay their tuition. Now . . . is she is in an MBA program, and is farily intellegent, she can garner a nice job, or pull a Madame DuBarry, or Madame de Pompadour getting to the board room via the bedroom.

I understand that selling a body for money is what many women do to pay the bills, and many of them do it under duress. As a Stalinist, you should understnd, for every Lenin, there is a Kruskaya, who was his mistress, as well as fellow Party member. Stalin his his "confidantes", too, who know how to get to corridors of power. The reality is, though, as you point out, that there aren't that many good looking, intelligent, and sexy women who know how pry vital information from "their men", Nonetheless, the potential is there. Its not impossible that some Oriental sex-slave,brought over ty some . . . who meets up with some well-to-do Oriental man, can turn a trick, and then some. Say, persuade the man to release her from her "obligation" and become his "other woman". Loyalty to one's wife is not always a virtue among some men, so . . .

For the record, Ciccolina (pronounced Chicholina}, a Hungarian immigrant to Italy made a career by showing her breasts in public. She managed to get elected to the Italian Parliatment and promote legislation that helped women. It is said that she pulled shtick in the Parliament, revealing her breasts more than once. In Israel, Pnina Rosenblum was considered one of the best "ladies of the night" to the point she was used by the foreign ministry to "take care of business". In time, she became rather rich, and now owns one of the leading cosmetic firms. She ran for office, garnered 20,000+ votes, and became a legislater in the State of Israel. (Israel has proportional representional system where a seat in the Knesset is translated as a certain number of "votes" in the general election.)

The bottom line is that, in principle "working women" can be in the most disgusting and exploitative situations, or, it can be something where a woman can get ahead, and go beyond "sexual exploitation". Assuming it was regulated, and a hard working girl has a chance to seek out her disgusting banker to provide her with what she needs to get ahead and become an equally disgusting banker in her own right, why not go for it.
