I just searched the term "masturbation" and found that better than 95% of men and between 60 and 76% of women have "pleasured themselves" during their lifetimes, according to various studies conducted c. 1950-2007. This reminds me of what my high school health teacher said in a classful of tenth-grade boys: "Fellas, 95 out of 100 of guys masturbate,...and the other five are liars." Judging from the nervous laughter that twittered around the room after he made that statement, I'd say he was probably correct.

Thus, Marc, you are either one of the five liars or you will admit that you have pleasured yourself too? Does this mean that you too are a "freak" along with Carrie?

The filming is a separate issue. I feel sorry for her that her self-esteem was so low that she thought that the only way to keep the guy was to make the tape. No doubt he saw a fast way to make a buck by selling it.

And finally, this is a life lesson for Ms. Prejean. She has learned that she cannot get up on a public soapbox and profess one set of "values" while knowing that her closet has such a huge skeleton in it. But then we are all models (no pun intended) of inconsistency; we all do things that humiliate us later. In the grand scheme of things, this is a relatively insignificant issue, compared to, oh I don't know, a president and his senior staff lying us into a war to steal someone else's oil for the multinational corporations.

That the woman is an idiot and a hypocrite is obvious... but reading between the lines here there is some suggestion that her claims to morality are undermined by having made a home sex-tape... meaning that there is something immoral about having a private life where you might do such a thing.
Really, if the progressive stance was for a person's right to do what they want in the privacy of their own bedroom then the same folks who disagree with her position on gay marriage should be defending her right to make a sex tape and not have it used to brand her as immoral.
Rather than just point at this one woman's foolishness we should be calling out the inanity of 'beauty pagents' and the values they promote.

FU makes some good points, but I think pageant contestants are not suppose to be porn stars until after they win the pageant and have completed their obligations.

I have never seen the agreement pageant contestants sign, but I think this issue is addressed in it.

If you want to participate in certain groups, lots of times there are conditions. I am doubtful Peter North could ever become the Pope.

Very good analyses of the whole deal! Thanks for that! I agree w/all your points. I just find the whole "purity" issue of the sponsors and of Miss America so darn sickening. But that does not negate a thing you say.

I guess I was thinking about the pageant side of it. But her specific argument concerning gay rights coming from a religious right perspective along with the premarital sex does seem like just another example of right wing hypocrisy. I mean being the pageant winner makes her a public figure and taking that stance makes her a right wing public figure. As we have seen, many of these people talk as though they were sexless individuals living the perfect christian life. And then you get a peak at what's really going on and you realize it's all "do as I say, not as I do."

I guess I just don't think these contests should put so much emphasis on "purity". I didn't think a sex tape should be part of any debate about whether she should keep her crown. But the wild sex she is having does suggest her beliefs towards sexual rights are hypocritical.

Let's just hope Donald Trump isn't in the video with her.

Granted, there is something quirky about a beauty pageant extolling "traditional" family values, yet having a competition where the contestants strut around in skimpy bathing suits. Are they trying to say that this is what the perfect American woman should look like, but she damn well better not wear something this revealing in public?

Once again, it all hinges on advertising. Miss USA, Miss America, Miss Universe and the rest are all being chosen to be spokesmodels, and as such, they are being chosen to represent various companies to sell their products. In return, the spokesmodel gets a token scholarship, and a boost into show business, which is an avid consumer of beautiful young women for its own purposes. Part of the bargain for any spokesperson of either sex is that if they engage in any kind of behavior that would perhaps tarnish the image of their employer, (the advertisers), then they can expect negative repercussions. Michael Phelps lost some sponsors after his little escapades, despite the fact that it had no effect on his ability to win gold medals. How many sponsors did Michael Jackson lose in the wake of his child molestation trial, despite the fact it had no influence on his ability to sing and dance? Remember, the only people who seem to skate when bad behavior crops up is repub politicians, people like David Vitter, who retained his Senate seat and was even given a standing ovation by his repub colleagues when he returned to the chamber, despite admitting he committed a crime by repeatedly soliciting prostitution. Or John Ensign, who allegedly paid hush money, and got his parents to pay hush money, to his mistress and her family.

Unless Ms. Prejean aspires to be a repub politician, (and if they can tout a dimwit like Palin for president, why can't sweet, innocent Carrie at least get a seat in congress), then she has to live by the rules that the rest of us in society have to live with.

Anyway, what a hypocrite that woman is. Preaching against gay sex, but making a graphic sex tape. No doubt she is on her knees, right now....praying....to be forgiven. In her mind, the Lord can forgive a graphic sex tape, but gay sex, even within the dignified privacy of one's own home, w/No camera going, is a terrible, horrible sin.
So, yeah, I'm glad she's not going to be able to sue. Very glad.

However, Ms Prejean, apparently, was dropped from the pageant for being "uncooperative" whatever that means.
I do think that using this sex tape against her is a form of blackmail, but I also think she probably was uncooperative.
And, as Uff says, if it's in the contests rules that the contestant be as pure as the driven snow, then I suppose a sex tape would tend to mess w/that image.

Personally, I see no contradiction between being religious and making a sex tape. I am not bothered by it, but then, I'm not running a beauty pageant, either. They seem so old-fashioned, but I suppose the little miss jon-benets out there need someone to look up to, and we can't have sex tapes floating around.

At least, not until After you win the crown.....then pose for playboy....and so forth....

I see what you are saying but when we hear "sex tape" I don't think that automatically means something was made for public distribution. I mean you could make a private tape for your own enjoyment and if someone gets their hands on it to leak it, that should not reflect on the person who made the tape.

But I imagine the pageants want the contestants to promote an image of virginity. LOL

I believe the pageant has rules about things like sex tapes, if I'm not mistaken, and they are asked explicitly if there's anything like that in their backgrounds before they are allowed to compete. A sex tape done prior would put her in violation of her contract in the first place, and exposed her as a liar, BEFORE the anti-gay issue came up.

If you think Prejean's private life should have no bearing on her being fit to be the pageant winner, then I'm sure you'll agree that having sex with Monica had no bearing on Clinton's ability to be president, right? After all, it wasn't "germain" to his ability to do the job, by your logic.

Wow. 1st time I have agreed with F U Bush. You are right. Her tape (whatever it happens to be) is unrelated. If it were dug up to pressure her to drop her lawsuit and is not Germain to the lawsuit, that is blackmail.

The reason this is a big deal is the the pageant is trying to promote an image, and having a winner that on one hand claims to be very religious, and on the other hand, has filmed a graphic sex tape, promotes an image of hypocrisy at best, duplicity at worst. I'm no fan of beauty pageants, haven't watched them for years, but I know that they are, like everything on tv, built on selling advertising. If you're an advertiser, you don't want to be associated with a product that is represented by a duplicitous spokesperson, which is what a pageant winner is.

The tape was not blackmail. Miss Prejean apparently made it willingly, for whatever purpose. It was not made secretly by the pageant to get her to drop the lawsuit.

I'm no fan of hers.

But why does a person's private sex life have anything to do with pageant results?

I mean this is sort of like Letterman. Letterman's story is about blackmail. But somehow the sex becomes the story. Letterman is in the right and Prejean is wrong in my opinion. But both have the right to argue and holding up evidence of sex should have nothing to do with the right to argue.

As a matter of fact, if the tape is being used to threaten Prejean into dropping the suit, that is blackmail.

Again I'm not defending her claims. But there are two issues here.
