Today on Lionel - Wednesday July 2nd.
How about that show yesterday? Was it as good for you as it was for me?
In the second hour, Lionel will be joined by Lynn Spencer, author of Touching History: The Untold Story of the Drama that Unfolded in the Skies Over America on 9/11. The book is a beautifully written minute-by-minute account of the day that changed everything. Not content to swallow and regurgitate the same old simplistic accounts, Lynn Spencer used her insight as a commercial pilot to craft a narrative that is gripping, insightful, and highly emotional. And let’s not forget: Lionel’s got some questions about that there official account, questions which he will no doubt ponder with Lynn Spencer’s studious assistance.
FROM THE ENDLESS CAMPAIGN
Our friends at The Nation have written a fabulous primer on the religious pitfalls facing Senator Barack Obama in the general election. Initially “accused” of being a Muslim, Mr. Obama is now trying to justify his support of faith-based initiatives to a traditionally Godless left-wing. Talk about a flip-flop! Obama has gone from amateur jihadist to Bible-beating right winger in a matter of months! Make up your mind and submit to one over-simplified characterization, would you?!?
I’m joking of course, but you can no longer deny Obama’s subtle shuffle to the center. Still think we’re nuts?
I take solace in this shift. It relieves me. If Obama is moving to the right, that means he’s a true politician and knows how to play the game. Some would even suggest that there is nothing particularly “new” about him, but that’s ok: I’ll settle for an old-style politician who can win. Even his fund-raising does not necessarily represent a groundswell of grassroots support; the names on those checks are familiar to the Democratic Machine. But so what?!? Get the money, win the election, bend over backwards to convince us you’re an American Superhero…then we’ll talk about changing the world.
IN THE MELANGE
There’s something to be said for partial credit.
The world is marching towards happiness, and we’re not leading the pack.
“I don’t know…it was really great at first. I mean, I really thought I loved him, but now I just…I just feel hollow inside. Married life is so hard”.

By LionelLoverJuly 2, 2008 - 9:44amWho wants to call in just to be shouted down for disagreeing?
We all know how you feel about it. You are the one who so brilliantly predicted this. Somehow people are still upset. Weren't they listening to you?
I think the answer is obvious.

I'm not calling the show anymore because you can almost pinpoint the minute the little red dot shows up on your forehead. It doesn't matter if you try to back up to clarify what you say, you just get flamed. I don't appreciate being target practice.

By goddess1871July 2, 2008 - 9:43amFaith Based vs Community based support
I am interested in the comments from Obama. I think his change in attitude came after his conversations with the Clinton's and thier support. His faith based program, started by the Clintons', might be yet another agreement made with the devil.
If this faith based stuff turns into community based programs and it gives organizations the feed the homeless, housing, family planning and AIDS education and support I will deal with it. It is just a method to give more money to who you like anyway but lets include the secular crooks too.

By LLEALEY1July 2, 2008 - 9:32amSeparation of church and state
I confess, I'm a religiophobe. I lean heavily toward freedom FROM religion. I don't want my Gov't deciding where my charity $$ go.
I witnessed first hand the difference between government assistance and faith-based assistance. The churches from all over the country came to our aid after Katrina; FEMA, well, not so much. The fact is the churches are STILL here working THIRTY-FOUR months after the storm. FEMA? They phoned me yesterday (for the second time in a week) to inquire if I still had my FEMA trailer. (Ummm, no, you took it away in February.)
I honestly believe our churches can handle their job without gov't assistance.

and focus on unregistered democrats. Get them registered to vote, stick to democratic principles and win one FINALLY!

By Michael BuchananJuly 2, 2008 - 9:48amSeparation of church and state revisited
Okay, I don't fear religion any more than I hate kids. I fear the organized idiots who knock on my door to tell me I'm going to hell if I don't bow down to their doctrine. I like kids, they're kinda interesting, I really hate parents who allow their children to be brats.
The religiophobe thingie is shorthand.
I still don't want gov't involved in god-things and the other way around.

By HierosisJuly 2, 2008 - 11:44amBoycott Michael Buchanan
On other forums (fora for Latin scholars), when someone like a Michael Buchanan posts crap and someone replies, other regulars reprimand them by saying "DON'T FEED THE TROLL."
I don't respond directly to him and, from what I've seen, no one seems to like him. I suggest that we all collectively ignore him.
One thing I really resent about Buchanan's posting of nothing but a link is that it is about the laziest way to attract attention and gives no evidence that the video is at all related to the blog topic. The LEAST Michael could do is to provide a brief summary about the video and then give the link. For instance, he could put, "I saw this video about Barack Obama's alleged Muslim ties, and here it is. . ." Also, he could put a notification whether the clip is or is not safe for work.
Unless Michael Buchanan is directly responding to the topic discussed in the blog and describes the content of media he feels supports his point, we would all be better off ignoring him. Even cursing him or telling him to go away is perversely giving him the attention he desires. In fact, I think he has a persecution complex and wants confrontation and not consensus.
I hate getting sucked into checking out the "new" comments only to find it to consist of nothing of bickering between Michael Buchanan and his feeders.
DON'T FEED THE TROLL.

By Michael BuchananJuly 2, 2008 - 12:03pmI agree "DON'T FEED THE TROLL"
I posted a comment without naming the site infestation yesterday. I assumed it was for two reasons we are constantly having to read this persons comments. First, the person knows that any site paid for would be very empty. So the best way to get a blog going is to steal Lionels blog. Second, the person gets it a free blog this way.
Even posts that don't mention this person by name are responded to by the person. This is a lonely delusional person. I still think if Lionel would block the links it might discourage but probably not the poster from staying. It's a start.
Until then as you said:
DON"T FEED THE TROLL!

By JCLevesqueJuly 2, 2008 - 12:46pmI had no idea people cared so much about things like...
on-topic posting. Or not summarizing links and identifying them as suitable for work. (I've actually never heard of that before.)
Is this what you guys are really upset about?
I think it must have something more to do with the actual opinion I'm posting and not just the fact that I'm posting a link to my video blog that all started when Lionel said that gays and lesbians need to keep quiet this election cycle as to not screw up Obama's chances. If Lionel never came out with that nugget, I wouldn't be here.
You guys need to chill out. There are people out there committed to causes. Shouting them down, calling them names and threatening violence against them might get some to go away. But how do call yourself progressive and do those kind of things? It blows my mind.
Why can't you just skip my posts if they annoy you so much?
I can't help feeling that all of this anomosity is fueled by homophobia and hate, not concern over blog ettiquette.
