Today on Lionel - Monday July 14th
It’s the last day of Derm’s absence, hopefully, although I can almost see him being held in contempt for standing up randomly and shouting “I Object”. Anywho, with any luck, we’ll have our house writer back tomorrow, thank (your “Higher Power” here). I always feel like Billy Crystal in “Throw Momma from the Train” trying to write this thing, “The night was moist…I got nothing” I guess I just don’t have that easy confidence that is necessary to espouse opinions on paper. What if people disagree with them? I just don’t think I can handle that kind of a rejection.
Speaking of rejection, no good deed goes unpunished. My question is, doesn’t wearing magic underwear count for anything?
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sixpack…meet senor y senora Klaus seispack. Now we really don’t make anything anymore.
Another stunning victory in the War on Drugs.
Instead of arresting her, next time give her a medal.
There goes the grease on the wheels of the healthcare industry. Look, I hate big Pharmaceutical Companies as much as the next dirty hippie, but “swag” isn’t the problem, no Doctor is dumb enough to prescribe an unnecessary medication based on how cool a pen they have. Why are all the “perks” being taken away? If they get rid of free T-Shirts at radio stations, I’m gonna have to find a real job. Sh*t.

Where?!
My satellite radio channel is runing Cenk Uygur, where is Lionel?
Thats the good news!
Thats the good news!
Don't forget your daily dose of...
well, me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axOdFCAPeZY
Don't forget...
Oh, bugger off, will ya?
Just trying to add my voice to the national discussion.
Such hostility over free expression.
Just trying to...
We've been through all this before, Mike. Make a statement here along WITH your self-promoting, self-aggrandizing, self-congratulatory, homophobic, unedited, utube link and I'll be really, really happy to READ your comments. I don't have ADD, I can pay attention to the written word, so WRITE SOMETHING, jerk. Like, how is GWBush's policies affecting you in Germany. What's the Shrub's reach? And when are you moving back here?
As for bugger, I picked it up when I lived in Canada. Sounds so much more "polite" to my American ears than fu@k off.
Now back to the issue...WHERE'S LIONEL?!
What's the point in telling people what to do?
If you don't want to click the link, DON'T CLICK THE LINK!
Must you make us aware every time you decide you DON'T want to click a friggin' link? Like we care. Talk about an attention whore.
Diagnosis
j7,,,,as I've said previously, Mikey suffers from sublimated anal guilt. He needs counseling ASAP. He has such a vile attitude. And people wonder why gay guys get the sh** kicked out of them?!?!? It's not because they're gay, it's because of the nasty, BITCHY attitudes!!!
I digress..............
you can also pick up Lionel if you use iTunes.
What is your problem?
No one admires bullies. They feel sorry for them.
iTunes
How do you get Lionel on iTunes? patp
Here's how
click on Radio--------->then choose Talk------->then choose Air America
Login
to Itunes and go to radio.
LOL
"Bugger"
Easy now, Beevis.
He didn't say balls.
Where is Air-America on XM radio?
I am not hearing Lionel this AM? What's the deal?
Lionel
CRUFFY
Lionel has been moved to once a week only on Saturdays. I was just on the phone with XM and the only way to complain is to go to their website click on the programming link, click on the view to the left of the 167 in the lineup and send an email to the company.
Probably won't do much good, but the man I spoke to said they would forward all the complaints to the programming dept. So I did fire off a letter and hopefully lots of others will as well.
I am having Lionel withdrawal!
Where is Lionel on XM?
Why has Lionel been removed from XM satellite radio? I don't think the mornings will be quite as enjoyable if I can't have my Lionel in the AM. I'll just have to listen on the computer stream. Not as convenient. Can't we get him back on XM? I've already written them but who knows why these decisions are made?
Lionel on XM
I had read XM removed Lionel from their line-up and changed the channel's name to "America Left". They recently signed a deal with Cenk to carry the previous day's TYT show.
I couldn't tell you why XM made that decision, but it seems to me that AAR's share of the market is declining.
Lionel
I don't understand what XM is thinking. Lionel is one of their best shows. In truth there is a lot of good liberal radio now that didn't exist a few years ago. I think it is time for a network of 160 + channels to think of expanding and adding a second liberal station. Maybe they are trying to save coin with a day old show but it is a stupid decision. In truth it is making me reconsider my XM subscription.
rickcopeland648
Where did you read that? I've spent the morning trying to track down any info about this. Contacting "America Left" or AirAmerica has been futile in the past. They didn't bring Randi Rhodes back because of us, they brought her back because her lawyers poked them in the eye.
J70460
Boy, I don't recall. I read it a few days ago. I'm inclined to say it was linked to in a thread on Sammy's blog. Cenk has talked about the move to XM for about the last week-and-a-half or two weeks. I think about the only AAR broadcasters XM is carrying now are Hartmann and Madow. In fact they seem to be the only shows many of the affilates carry.
I for one was surprised when Lionel was dropped by his home station. I don't live in New York, but I am a Lionel fan. That written, I DO get why some wouldn't like his show.
The New Yorker cover
The problem with the New Yorker cover is that OBAMA hasn't been elected - YET. When you reinforce stereotypes that may impact the forthcoming election then you can't say you're poking fun at the same ridiculous stereotypes. If OBAMA was already in the oval office the cover could be seen for what they claim was their intent. But at this time it is merely a fear mongering warped reinforcement of the worst kind of hateful attacks.
Only those who would never vote for the guy in the first place..
would see that cover in a negative way.
The cover is a picture. A drawing. If a drawing can kill your campaign, you obviously were a WEAK candidate to begin with.
umm...
i'm voting for him and see the tastelessness in it. i, therefore am seeing it in a "negative way."
someone who would never "vote for the guy in the first place" would look at it and laugh, no? as such, they would be seeing it in a positive way, a way working toward their cause.
stop. think. =)
Negative, meaning loss of votes.
You are voting for him. I guess that means the picture didn't sway your decision.
And those who would never vote for him in the first place for the reasons depicted in the drawing (he's a radical muslim terrorist) would not laugh.
Only those with a brain would laugh. I imagine the Obamas laughed when they saw it the first time. Of course they think it is better politically to act offended.
so many flaws...
...so little time.
=P
Elitist
The proletariat will never see The New Yorker except in passing,on the news stand. Nor will they understand the context.
XM dropped Lionel today
Stephany Miller is now on in place of Lionel.
I'm really disappointed in what XM has done with cutting Air America programming while naming their channel as Air America. Many of my favorite Air America hosts and programs have either been cut or broadcasts have been reduced or rescheduled to odd hours.
With ownership of both Sirius and Xm now under the same management someone should get this crap straightened out...I'm looking into ways to get around this and may eventually drop the satellite radio completely, at home I can stream off the internet but I'm still hamstrung when mobile. I'm considering investing in a 32 gig I pod and downloading instead of accepting this whacked XM mismanagement crap.
Chris Mrosko
They are supposedly no longer calling the XM channel "Air America". It is now "America Left". And they aren't the only ones dropping a lot of AAR's lineup.
From what I have seen in the past, many AAR affiliates have always carried Stephanie Miller in place of Lionel. Personally I've never cared for her (or Randi's) show...
Illegal immigration debate as racism.
I agree with you completely, Lionel.
xm changes
I just registered to comment on the XM change. I believe that XM changed because they heard from enough of their listeners. When AAR made the studpid mistake of putting on LIBERTARIAN Lionel instead of LIBEDRAL Sam Seder, that was the beginning of the end. I think most AAR listeners were like me and wanted to hear the side of the news not on the MSM. I don't need to listen to a morning zoo program (although Stephanie Miller is much funnier because her crew does great impressions). I tried to give LIonel a chance but I was not impressed. I don't need to listen to someone who throws around big words to try and make his listeners sound dumb. If you are not happy with the changes on XM, why not lobby them to create two liberal talk stations? There are 2 (at least) conservative ones.
XM radio
I can't stand Stephanie Miller or Cenk Ugar (sp). They don't do any research and don't seem to be very bright or smart. I am disappointed that Lionel has been removed.
I called programming at XM and the guy who took my call couldn't even get The Lionel Show to pull up on his computer. Here's that phone number: 1-866-962-2557.
Then I called Air America and left them a message. Here's that number: 1-212-871-8290. I was unable to get a human being on the phone.
Lionel is bright, informative, and funny. What a shame. patp
I disagree
about Cenk Uygur. I find him passionate, funny and very much well-informed, and he's also an excellent interviewer. In fact, I would rate the Young Turks in my top 5 shows, along with Rachel, Thom Hartmann, Ring of Fire and a hypothethical Sam Seder show.
XM radio
to sandyjean:
1. Lionel is NOT a libertarian.
2. You ARE dumb and lazy. If you don't know a word, look it up. patp
Excuse me
I do not listen to him regularly but I recall he called himself that when he was first brought on AAR. He does, I believe, call himself a contrarian. I may be wrong there but his type of humor seems to focus on making fun of his listeners (eg. drunk dialing) I was giving my opinion without insulting anyone. It has been obvious for a long time that AAR does not care about its original listeners. Fortunately there are beginning to be other choices. AAR created a brand then just blew it off. I won't bother to write anymore since this does not seem to be a place that welcomes civil discussion.
also
L-train doesn't care about labels.
I've been noticing that the wrath of democrats
is falling on L-train and Hartman for not constantly
licking the boots of the democratic candidate, because they
are very subjective, and don't treat politics as sports,
but rather construct their opinions using their own brains.
You can call it zenophobia if you like
The immigration debate has always been about racism. There was a time when (I don't know if it has changed or not), the US had quotas for some countries,as to admission. Some countries were limitless. Other more equatorial countries were limited. Unless they were astrophysist.
XM needs to get Lionel back
I'm listening to some other show on XM167. Don't like it... I Miss Lionel already! They need to get him back. What's is wrong with XM anyway?
XM Changes
Being a long-time XM subscriber, I just wrote to XM expressing my displeasure on Lionel being dropped.
There goes my morning drive time stimulation since Omaha carries no progressive on-air radio. I'll have to wait until I get to the office to pick up the stream.
It would be good if XM would put Schultz and the others on one channel and the Air America lineup on another channel. Then I'd have a choice.
Maybe I can get a stream on my Sprint Treo while driving?
WTF
Where's Lionel on XM? I am so upset.
Hey Sandyjean...
then go back to Sam's show...oh, I forgot...he no longer has one on Air America. You people are just mad because Lionel replaced Sam. There is room for everyone...we should be sticking together and building the brand and liking all the hosts and their different styles. I am so sick of you Sam people writing negative comments about Lionel. Don't listen, don't write...very simple. Lionel's fans are much classier and more educated...we like big words.
I plan to
I plan to go back to the Sam Seder Show Blog since the people there are NICER. I came here to see the reaction about the XM change. I made a positive suggestion, lobby XM, that was ignored. I think XM has made these changes because they heard from their listeners. They put Thom Hartmann back on after a lobbying campaign. If you like Lionel, fine. I would like to see more choices on XM as well. I also want to comment on the big words thing. It is one thing to try and expand a listeners vocabulary; it another to throw around obscure words to make yourself sound smart. I'm sure Lionel is smart but I'm not interested in his focusing on himself. A perfect EXAMPLE is the promo they used to play for him on XM. I don't remember the list of words (except spelunking) but the promo did nothing to highlight his LIBERAL/PROGRESSIVE arguments as much show how much he loves to listen to himself talk.
Faris...
Right with you about labels.
Hey Sandyjean...
Still hanging around here. We Lionel fans don't need your negativity. Lionel is Lionel and if you don't "get him" then get out.
Ease up on Sandyjean
She did, as she pointed out, make a good suggestion for action: call XM and demand they make a spot for The Lionel Show.
Thank you NickyRose
Thank you for pointing out my main point. I use my XM everyday and I want more progressive choices. It has never made any sense that they have one liberal talk choice when they have sooo many stations. For gawd's sake they have a station just for Oprah & Friends! I have been following the changes in AAR closely since I bought my XM to listen to AAR. One thing I have noticed in the past three years is that XM will make changes if they hear from enough listeners. AAR? I don't think they care what their listeners think.
Sandyjean and NickyRose...You're Right...
and that's the plan. I'm just sick of Lionel bashing...enough already. We need to stick together and get the word out and make it happen. Sandyjean, you could have suggested this origianlly without your negative comments, that's all.
I too am disturbed by all the bile...where's Derm to defuse this
tension convention!
The Jaco Pastorius Experience
about bashing
I commented on the fact (I thought) that Lionel was a libertarian. I didn't know that stating facts as I knew them was considered bashing. One of the best talk show hosts for information is Charles Goyette who was on the original AAR station in Phoenix. He did great anti Bush research but would then throw in zingers like "Why can't all roads be privately owned?".
But I just don't get the word thing. Maybe he doesn't do it on his show but what does throwing in a word like spelunking (the only one I can remember clearly from the promo) have to do with progressive, political talk?
What do I know?
It seems that the Jones network does a good job of getting their shows on, at the expense of AAR shows. On both affiliates and XM. Ed Schultz on in real time, and not Hartmann, in several places. There are other examples. How the f*** did they get WWRL to drop Hartmann in favor of Schultz? I think one of Lionel's "problems" in this regard is that he is not a conventional liberal. He does have progressive values, but he gets into lots of areas that most hosts don't venture. I hope he gets back on XM. I like the idea of an exclusive AAR channel, like the original WLIB line-up--hey, that is what the AAR stream does. Duh!. Let Jones put their shows on their own channel.
Lionel's politics
"I commented on the fact (I thought) that Lionel was a libertarian..."
To me, what is damning about libertarians is that they are uncritical of markets. Free markets=liberty. Governments restrict markets. Lionel is not in that libertarian camp. He may be a civil libertarian, but, unlike Goyette, not a 'capitalist' (free market) libertarian.
I think most liberals are civil libertarians
Except for those who are too concerned about politcal correctness. I wanted to thank you for your kind responses, NickyRose. I will admit that I have a bias against Lionel, not necessarily because of him but because of the way AAR screwed Sam Seder. He kept that place afloat during their darkest days and they keep shafting him. I could say the same thing about Kuby who I have only heard a little of. I also did not think there was much serious political discussion on the Lionel show. After all, AAR used the reason of needing a "lighter" show in the AM against Stephanie Miller. I apologize for my assumptions because, as I said, I do not listen to him.
Stupid Mistake...
of putting Lionel on instead of Sam...this is just one of the things you said Sandyjean. You're coming around though. You make some valid points but be angry at AAR, not Lionel. There should be room for both of them. They are two very different and unique individuals. Lionel is entertaining, and I for one, find everything so depressing that I want my news delivered and infused with humor along the way. I also want a break along the way and I want to hear about Amy Winehouse. Read Lionel's blogs...just great.
Remember, it's called show business with emphasis on business. WWRL took lots of moolah to broadcast some infomercial and Ed's show. Remember...it's not about Lionel or Thom...it's MONEY and that's the bottom line for businesses. Lionel and Thom should be angry at AAR...they weren't dropped as everyone assumes...WWRL took MONEY and the higher bidder won.
WHERE ARE YOU, LIONEL?
Hey! What gives?
Lionel is no longer on XM?
How do we get him back on?????????????????????
I think Amy Winehouse is singer
I wouldn't know since I pretty much stopped listening to new music in the 70's. From what I have heard, most of what is new that is good is a remake. But that is my point. I read Molly Ivan's book SHRUB before the 2000 election and knew Bush would be a nightmare. I was STARVING FOR NEWS I tried cable first, what a joke. I read blogs but I can't live in front of a computer. When I found out about AAR I was so excited! My first year I listened through static to a station 100 miles away in Phoenix (and only during daylight hours) Then I got my XM and have lived in XM land since.
Bush world is so scary that I want to know as much as possible to share with my friends & family. It may be that Lionel has more to say about our current political situation than I knew. From my perspective, they always promoted his show to be about him and how smart he is. I am not interested personalities, I want news and fact-based opinion.
We Need Our Lionel In The Morning...CALL AND WRITE NOW

Sandyjean, Let's Kiss and Make Up...
I get your point. Lionel is just different. I'm more laid back than you and want a mix of news in a more entertaining way. Lionel is a former prosecutor so if you listen, you'll see that he comes to the point from a legal angle sometimes and...he really does know his facts.
Enjoy the upcoming evening.
AAR
I remember when it was announced that Jerry Springer would replace Unfiltered. I was one of those who squawked about it. Then someone responded to one of my rants with something like "How would you know about Springer, since you have not listened to him on the radio?" Right on! I did listen to him, and found him entertaining. He was fairly popular, especially, it seemed, among people who may not listen regularly to AAR. Anyway, I learned my lesson about jumping the gun.
I knew about Lionel from WFMU, the Florida radio renaissance. They have a good collection of classic radio shows and their hosts. Anyway, Lionel was brought in, perhaps, to broaden demographics, as well as gain new listeners. (I can't prove any of this.) I also listen to Sam Seder, and don't want to get into any argument. I wish he would get another show. I don't know what goes behind the decision making process. Why was Kuby chosen over Seder? (I like Kuby, by the way.) I don't know what I am trying to say.
Although AAR seems to have screwed up many times, (Why was Malloy let go? Morning Sedition's cancelling, and more...) I still like their programs. Their weekend line-up is superb. And they always seem to come up with new shows. I don't see this sort of thing coming from Jones, or Nova M. End of meandering rant.
My take on AAR
I have been watching this up and down closely and here is what I think. Left wing views scare advertisers. AAR management knows it needs advertisers and that causes a natural move to the center. There are theories about AIPAC and Hillary but mostly, I think, the management wants to play it safe. That's understandable, it is a business. And, you're right, Lionel already had a reputation in the radio business so it made sense to hire him. I didn't mean to be a Troll today. I guess I let my emotions get in the way because AAR was once a unique thing, a voice of truth and light I thought. I hope I accomplished one thing. I hope disgruntled Lionel listeners will lobby XM for another liberal talk station. We need more room for progressive voices.
BTW- I still love ROF, Politically Direct, and others....
Thanks Sandyjean...
Yes, we will take your advice and lobby for Lionel to be put back on XM.
NickyRose...you're right on track about a lot of things.
Good night all.

LIONEL'S NEW BOOK...
DON'T FORGET TO READ LIONEL'S NEW BOOK DUE OUT AUGUST 5TH FROM HYPERION...
EVERYBODY'S CRAZY EXCEPT YOU AND ME AND I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT YOU.
Seder
I also think AAR made a mistake by getting rid of Sammy. But I've also defended Lionel on Sam's blog. Both are good, albeit different hosts. Personally, I think an even bigger mistake is getting rid of TYT as I thought it was an ideal morning show for that format. Cenk seems to be doing much better without AAR...
As for WWRL dumping Hartmann... That makes no sense to me as I think Thom has the better show. BUT, I can easily see how people would find Thom's show dry, didactic, and maybe condescending. I've read people saying the same thing with regard to Maddow (and I think she's a true tallent. Really, for what she does she's a natural), however, think Hartmann's show is great.
As for Dermot... Maybe he's trying on a new dress? Maybe he's out getting smokes?
Dermott is right here, my
Dermott is right here, my friends. He will always be here for you. You just rest now - everything will be OK.
Best,
Derm
rickcopeland648
You sound like a good man. Yes, we need everyone on board...Sam, Lionel, Thom....
I explained yesterday right here that WWRL took lots of money for an infomercial to replace my fave Lionel and Ed S. instead of Thom. It had nothing to do with these 2...it was $$$$$$$$$$$.
Thank you for defending Lionel on Sam's blog. People who love Sam should not take it out on Lionel but on AAR management. They are both very different and unique and we must all stick together. You will never see Sam bashing from Lionel's fans so spread the word and...many thanks.
Praise Odin for XM's programming change
I don't have to listen to Lionel the Clown anymore!!!! Yea!!!! Such a piece of junk his show is. Nothing but equipment complaints and buddy chatter. The man is a clown and not in a good way. He and his band of drunkards belong on AM in Cleveland. Thank Odin someone finally interviened and put Cenk back on. Now if they could just to something with that Race to the Out House show. Gregory is a paid shill for Karl Rove and Dick Cheney. It is truly disgusting to have to listen to him instead of Rachel.
shame on you...
...for being unable to differentiate between an attorney and a clown. no wonder u did not like the show. now letz here u plug Miller... where a clown show is truly a clown show.
I miss Lionel
Where is he? and why did this happen? Lionel has been my daily companion on my morning commute since he began this show. What can we do to bring him back?
You can get the Lionel podcast here
http://airamerica.com/ondemand/podcast/6642/full
Not sure why XM has taken him off. Maybe something to do with the merger of Sirius and XM? Or a program change by XM. Ouch. I really can't stand Stephanie Miller's air head stuff.
ooops
ooops podcast still there
Yeah where is Lionel
No Lionel on XM in the morning!!! instead its the hackneyed old air-headed Stefanie Miller non-funny funny stuff which we need like a hole in the head right now before the election. I got XM radio to avoid Miller-type shows, she seems to be on most AM stations. I hope this is not a permanent change from Lionel to Miller. While Miller may appeal in general to the brain-dead, vacant, unwashed masses (who mostly populate the earth) this is not what leftist subscribers want from Air America...
Lionel
So was this a decision of XM or Air America Radio to carry Lionel only once a week? Thanks
