Au Revoir. Auf Wiedersehen. Toodle-oo.

By Lionel

This is it. Tomorrow, it’s over. I will miss this election more than you can imagine. It knows and has known no peer. It seems like it's been going on forever, perhaps because it has. I’m not one of those folks that claims to want it over or who feigns ennui. This election was nothing short of amazing. It’s been a boon for cable news and electoral pundits. I listened this morning to Joe Scarborough on “Morning Joe” describe every possible permutation that’s remotely conceivable. What if Virginia went blue? What if Ohio went Obama? What if Florida stayed red? What if the South hadn’t attempted to secede? What if Shelley Long hadn’t have left “Cheers”? I mean, they went four hours today. Why, you ask? Because they had to. As you probably have noticed, I find media coverage the derivative issue of every story: there's the story and how the media have covered it. I'll miss so much of the coverage.

I’ll miss John King from CNN and his magical electoral map. The bevy of “strategists.” Translation: either the allegedly hot chick who’s unemployed but is politically connected somehow or someone who fills no category whatsoever. Someone a booker had to nab on the fly. I can just imagine them in a room “strategizing.” Fill in the space with anything and anybody.

I’ll miss Tina Fey and her doppelgänger, Sarah Palin. Or is it the other way? I’ll miss using the word “doppelgänger” as much as I have. I’ll miss SNL being worth watching and will invariably revert to “Mad TV,” which is superior.

I’ll miss the soporific Chuck Todd, NBC’s political analysts. Chuck gives new hope to the terminally boring. What will I do with my time? What will Keith Olbermann do with, God willing, a Democratic President, House and Senate? Will he be able to cheer versus attack? I worry about him so. (And how about that Ben Affleck piece on SNL! Wow.) Will there be more special comments with an all-Democratic everything? God, I hope so. You see, while Republicans are so losers, in fact they hardly if ever lose, Dems are nescient as to this winning thing. Dems (versus Doze?) are great when royally PO'd, when affronted. When slighted or given short shrift (or short-sheeted, for that matter), Democrats go bonkers. How will they handle winning if, God willing, they win?

This election has been about more than the election. The means of data transmission and information dissemination is nothing short of immediate and plenary. Four years ago there was no YouTube or HuffPo. The transformation of news and opinion delivery has been nothing short of amazing. The term now is "content transmission." You'll see that, notwithstanding economic contretemps, newsrooms will be shuttered, newpaper staff whittled and the entire conglomerate of old-fashioned news and opinion delivery will be forever changed. Remember, the newspaper you purchase today is yesterday's news. It's per se obsolete. I can remember when working morning drive talk radio had as one of its main perks the fact that you got the papers first. My god, I'm ancient. It is nothing short of amazing when you see how far we've come. But, news delivery immediacy deosn't mean its filtered or edited or verified. Thank Zeus for the blogosphere . . . provided it's correct. Remember the Palin story that was floating around about her son being her grandson. Oops.

Look, I'd better pipe down. It sounds too much like the proverbial drape-measuring. Let's just leave it at that.

One more day.

Tina Fey's Sarah Palin

Probably the penultimate comedy sketch of all time. All she had to do was quote Palin and do exaggerated expressions and hand motions. The first time I saw her doing Palin I thought I was actually watching Palin. It took a while to realize that Fey's face is thinner.

Too bad it's over. Failing an election theft by Diebold, Sarah Palin will fall on the trash heap of comedy--at least until 2010 when she gears up her campaign for 2012. Hopefully she'll be greeted by the same response that Dan Quayle received when he formed a Quayle 2000 exploratory committee.

Quayle & Palin - A pair of deuces

Lately there's been so many Palin imitators. Think it's the hair. Also those hand movements.

Gonna miss Opus.

Or could it be?

Or could it be that there are actually a lot of "Palin" types out there? There is no doubt she has tapped into something! Women ARE actually STARVING for more female voices in politics and Palin is unfortunately a woman's voice among tooo few women's voices in our representative government. Next time Palin runs I expect there will be a larger group of nominee's to select from and Palin will Pale by comparison! Besides, we the people will end up feeding and protectin' all those youngin's of hers and after all that is just too much like welfare, isn't it??

Of course there are repub politicians out there that could make

Palin an also-ran in terms of ability and experience, like Kay Bailey Hutchinson. However, one thing Palin brings to the table is the innate ability to bring the uneducated, uninformed repub voter in to rallies in droves. In her, they see someone just as dull and ignorant as themselves, and they say, "Gee, there's a dolt just like me, and she's running for president. I think I'll vote for her". I may not agree with the viewpoints of most of today's crop of repubs, but I'm damned certain they can come up with someone better than Blinky and Winky. This could have been a much tougher election to win if Mittens were the candidate, as he could at least claim he has real experience in business and economics, unlike McCain and Palin. Oh well, thanks for handing us the election on a silver platter, repubs. Not only will it cost you the presidency and more seats in congress, it will probably also be the start of a very nasty civil war for the soul of the repub party. Maybe it can be turned into a new reality show - "Survivor: Beltway RNC".

How about

a Palin-Quayle ticket in 2012? Will assure Obama gets two terms.

Actually, I have seen Dan Quayle on a couple of his rare

TV interviews, and he seems to be a lot more intelligent than Caribou Barbie. I may disagree with his views, but he is at least coherent and makes an argument you can follow. Palin, on the other hand, is in the Bush mold, unable to form complete sentences, put together a coherent argument, or complete a thought.

If Palin thinks she's the shoo-in for the 2012 nomination, she's not only ignorant, but deluded also. It is already evident that Romney and Giuliani are gunning for her, and I am certain that Huckabee will be using his Fox show to boost his image for 2012. She may say she's not going anywhere, but I don't see that being her decision alone. She is not operating in a vacuum, and the repub party isn't going to freeze into stasis so that she can pick up on Wednesday where she left off on Tuesday. There's going to be a lot of soul searching, recriminations and bad blood as a result of a likely dem landslide tomorrow.

Even the band is beautiful!

Hot off the presses! From FT:

John McCain enters the final day of the 2008 presidential contest facing what even some prominent Republicans were dubbing a difficult fight as a clutch of polls showed Democrat Barack Obama’s lead widening into the double digits.

Wilkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome

Don't worry Lionel, when Obama is elected, the first order of business of the counterfeit conservatives will be to foil him and any other politician who dares to slow the "end of times" by solving a problem.

You and I and the rest of us will be there to expose and ridicule those opposed to ending the war in Iraq, opposed to Middle East peace, opposed to universal health care, opposed to environmental protection and opposed to energy conservation and transformation.

No, my diminutive acquaintance (Lionel), there will be plenty of entertaining public good to do.

And May God Smile Upon Us Tomorrow.
