Today's TRMS
On today's show Rachel will be playing all of Obama's landmark speech in Berlin and then we will compare it to McCain's speech. McCain's wasn't a landmark speech but it was at a landmark. It was at Schmidt's Sausage and Fudge Haus in Columbus, Ohio. There, McCain was literally drowned out by wind chimes. Another grand moment in campaign stagecraft brought to you by the McCain campaign!
Rachel will be talking to David Bender, her political guru and host of Politically Direct, about his reaction to Obama's speech.
- July 24, 2008

Again, may ask the question...
Who's covering the tab on this world wind tour that Sen. Obama is on. Originally I thought this was a Senate related field trip. I think it's great th see and hear that Sen. Obama voice carries well across the lawn of the wonderful landmark in Berlin.
I realize that the substance of his speech was more melodic to my ears than the rantings among the Schmidt's Sausage Haus, but it was the notation that he was not the norm when it came to a person from our shore stood before them to speak, I felt is was another way to dig into our sides the thorn that reminds us that he is African American. then the go from his families history and segway into the story of the airlift of Berlins, to offer us some picture that would lead us to believe he has felt there pain... sorry I am headed back in line at the Schmidt's haus, for seconds , (btw- right down the way is a great antiques district),
- - because I am sure that the desert that Sen. Obama is offering is a bit tart, to offer me some form relation between him and Germany, oh wait he already did that a few months back, it was an uncle right, and where was that??.
So I guess of late I am offering words of caution. Just because is a leather bound first edition does not make it a good read. I am not a pessimist, just living in the real world here in Fla, where my 30.00 USD left me with only 7.444 gals.
So May ask who is paying the tab on this trip. (along with the secret service duty, the convention setups etc.

The first part of the trip was a Senate trip. Iraq and Afghanistan definitely, though I'm not sure whether Israel, Jordan, and other countries in that area were also part of the Senate trip, but I think so.
The current part of his trip is a campaign trip. His time in Berlin is being paid for by his campaign funds.

much air time that gets.. maybe a minute total between all the networks.. even MSNBC has swooned over the guy, back when it was a three way they seemed to be a little less greedy with the kind word to BHO, verses Sen.McCain. Columbus's German Village is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in the world. I really love it there. Have been to the Book Loft (! it's dangerous for me--until I move out of this van-sized apartment I'm trying to force myself to use the library unless the book is signed by its author). Last fall an Ohio-based colleague and I went to an elegant restaurant in German village and dined like royalty: Lindey's? (http://www.lindeys.com/)

I never ate at Lindey's - my postdoc salary only went so far, even in the Midwest - but I do remember it. My favorite top-flight Columbus restaurant was the Refectory (http://www.therefectoryrestaurant.com/), which was just down the road from me - saved up special to eat there once.
Also good, besides Wendy's (ha!), was Morone's for pizza (http://moronesitalianvilla.com/home.htm). But I'll never figure out why they cut circular pies in square (or semi-square) pieces. Sounds like a question for Ask Dr. Maddow.

I was visiting family in Columbus July 4, and we went to a Dublin pizzeria that did the same thing! Not only that, they cut it into SMALL square pieces. Good pizza, though. Thin crust and not drenched in "Can Be Sprayed On Food."
And when I asked for green stuff to shake onto mine, in addition to the red and yellow stuff pizzerias still provide shakers of, the cooks separated out oregano from some kind of premix back in the kitchen for me. Very nice people.

Re: loreleynyc.com
Warsteiner and Jever! Are they fresh????
My favorite beers when I left Germany were mostly Sauerland Pilsners, though Hesse and Northern Germ. were also representing:
1. Krombacher ("eine Perle der Natur")
2. Warsteiner ("die Königin unter den Bieren")
3. Probably Jever
4. Maybe Licher ("aus dem Herzen der Natur"), because that was the cheap local beer in my college town.
5. Flensburger, just because it comes with that old-fashioned wire, porcelain and rubber lid that goes "foop." My neighbors used to put down their Latin grammars and drift into the kitchen of an evening when they heard the first "foop."
Never Giessener, that stuff... might not cure cancer the way other German beers clearly can. And Low Countries Beck's gave me the only hangover I ever got in Germany from beer. Because I only drank it once. Now, our local brewery ("Unser Marburger--darauf sind wir stolz") was en route to glory. They developed an ambitious plan to improve the products, bringing in a good Braumeister the way NFL teams might obtain a new quarterback. In a few years they might have done great things. But the owner died quite young of a surprise heart attack while vacationing in the Ukraine, and his daughter didn't care so much about the investment.
Warsteiner in America has consistently been a different beer than the non-export, with mysterious sediment and skunk. Even on tap at Fritz & Frans in Coral Gables, where I watched Germany lose its last World Cup game under the most delightful of circumstances.
In Cologne last month I did a little research. At the grocery store I grabbed two of each of the beers I was curious about, to find out what they'd been up to while I was away. Turns out Krombacher is no longer good, but Warsteiner is still excellent. Jever is good--no sugar, thank you! And thank heavens the kölsch beers of Cologne have improved. They're much crisper and cleaner now, less nebulous (i.e. dangerous). It used to be hard to celebrate carnaval for a week in Cologne on kölsch.
Which brings me to the topic of 4 a.m. food: anything from a Turkish Dönerladen. Anything, with everything on it, all the secret sauces, and the mysterious spice powder that burns your lips.

By datadubJuly 25, 2008 - 2:16amMcCain PROVES the surge was NOT needed?
Rachel,
If you watched Olbermann tonight -- You'll find that John McCain PROVED we did NOT need "the Surge" in order for Iraq to be in the position they are in right now.
Toward the end of an interview, McCain said, "Col. MacFarland, on his own, basically was going into Ramadi and clearing neighborhoods and holding those neighborhoods before almost anybody else was doing that. He deserves great credit." McCain also said, "The surge is a 'strategy.' It's political, military, extra troops, it's hold, it's REALLY CLEAR & HOLD as opposed to the strategy we were employing before." (I was struck that McCain said "it's (surge) really clear & hold -- as opposed to extra troops.)
Remember - Anbar province Sheik Abdul Sattar Al-Rishawi and his allies among the tribes and anti al Qaeda insurgent groups began forming alliances in the spring and summer of 2006. Sept. 2006, the groups established the Jazeera Council in Ramadi, and began working more closely with Coalition forces to begin securing neighborhoods in Ramadi
John McCain said, "I was in Anbar province and met with Col. MacFarland. Col. MacFarland was implementing the surge strategy at that time before extra troops ever got there. And he had discussions and told the sheiks who asked for his protection and he provided it and that began the Anbar Awakening." (McCain met with MacFarland 12/2006 -- not sure if McCain was physically in Anbar or was just 'mentally' in Anbar, hard to know. -- but the last part, Awakening, began in Summer 2006.)
Which means, since we KNOW the Awakening began in the Summer 2006 & MacFarland helped them in September 2006 ... SOOO ... we did NOT need additional Troops in 2007 because McCain admits Col. MacFarland started 'the surge' and 'the surge' was successful in September 2006.
IF: The Surge is, as McCain says, 'it's really clear & hold" and MacFarland successfully implemented "the surge" by clearing & holding neighborhoods in 9/2006, as McCain said.
... THEN: We clearly did NOT need to send additional troops in order to send al Qaeda back to Afghanistan and Iraq would be in the position they are in now and ... Obama was right all along, we could have began troop withdraw in 2007 and sent Troops to fight al Qaeda in Afghansitan, where they ran to and where they came from.
... Because The 2006 MacFarland Surge of clearing & holding was successful before, as McCain said, extra troops got there.
I hope you get my point & I'd love to hear your thoughts.

rachel you are the best hope for shedding a little light on all things Obama. So many on the TV machine relate to only the surface of what he has to say, because he says so much, and the implications go so deep, that it takes sharp minds, or at least hearing his words twice (ex. today's speech) to recognize how amazingly sharp and complete his mind is.
Pundits don't seem to be made for capturing real complexity, because each incident is shaped down to fit their existing conclusions. The impact of Sunni Awakening and our policy of paying Sunni insurgents is a level of complexity, and shading of gray that is hard to capture on RWH because everybody just wants to stuff "The Surge" down our throats. We are witnessing amazing history, and most of us don't even know it.

By hilthornburrowJuly 25, 2008 - 2:57amEvil Clintonian Legacy
I love ya Rachel, but jeez,
"Don't ask, don't tell" should absolutely be repealed, but don't lay the blame at Clinton's feet. Remember it was a compromise. Clinton had originally tried to allow people to serve openly in the military, regardless of sexual orientation. It just wasn't going to happen in 1993. Back then, I was in my early 20s, in Panama, serving in the Army. I had started my first gay relationship a year earlier and I was paranoid that I would get busted, stripped of VA benefits, lose the Army College Fund, and get a dishonorable discharge. Before don't ask, don't tell, gay service members were popular targets for CID, who apparently had nothing better to do. So, I don't see don't ask don't tell as a "evil Clintonian legacy" it gave me a measure of relief. Clinton tried to repeal the ban and failed, but at least he allowed me to serve out the last two years of my enlistment without the ongoing fear of being caught up in a witch hunt.
- Email this page
By jerryblankJuly 25, 2008 - 4:51amYou lucked out!
Research from the Service Members Defense Fund has shown that there were MORE gay ousts in the military AFTER don't ask don't tell. The major target became women. I think you were in a good circumstance.
And yes, there is an evil Clinton legacy. THE most gay-friendly in the history of this country did the most damage with Don't Ask, DOMA, and putting into law the HIV immigration ban. All while our "excellent" Human Rights Campaign watched and made apologies for him.
- Email this page
By cool_princessieJuly 25, 2008 - 4:09pmMore to it than that
Increases in gay ousters don’t tell the whole story. The majority of the increases have come from entry-level training sites. I know that I had a “holy crap what have I gotten myself into” moment during basic training. Under “Don’t ask” most service members can get an honorable discharge, something that wasn’t true before. I don’t doubt that there are people in basic training who use “Don’t ask” as an out.
The military is still not a great environment for gay people. I know that service members who want to serve are still getting kicked out, and that at times the military hasn’t followed its own rules. “Don’t ask” sought to end the egregious practice of the sweeping gay witch-hunts. For an idea of what that was like read Randy Shilts's Conduct Unbecoming.
It’s not a matter of me getting lucky. DOMA the HIV immigration ban are indeed evil Clintonian legacies, Don’t ask isn’t one of them.

Yes, President Clinton was the worse thing that happened to gays in the military! Had Bush 41 won a second term he would have been bringing gays comfy fuzzy slippers, and then a President Dole would have brought us cocoa with marshmallows. Clinton was a true bastard.
- Email this page
By jerryblankJuly 26, 2008 - 1:26amThank you!
My criticism of Clinton is due in large part to the factions of the LGBT community that long for a presidency like that. The drool factor for the so called "most gay-friendly president" is alive and well.
I mean, Hilary Rosen, Elizabeth Birch's previous partner, was deeply involved with the Hilary Clinton campaign. When she and Birch were together, Birch was the head of HRC. You would assume that these people would know better the Clintons than to go around telling the LGBT community to vote on that legacy again. Especially after the terrible job that Hilary C did on the Logo debate. Don't you think?
- Email this page
By cool_princessieJuly 28, 2008 - 12:52pmuggh
My contention here is simple. It has nothing to do with DOMA, HIV immigration issues, HRC, Hillary or whether the Clinton legacy is something that gay people should support. I don’t “drool” over Clinton nor do I have blinders on about the real negative impact of Don’t Ask. Simply put, as a policy “Don’t Ask” is an improvement over the DoD’s previous policy. I see the increased number of discharges as an unexpected side effect of the fact that “don’t ask” allows separation with an honorable discharge. Personally, I would have outed myself rather than serve under the current Command in Chief. It strikes me as extremely arrogant to dismiss my experience as just luck. If you want to argue that “Don’t Ask” did the most damage, please explain to me how the previous policy was better.

By jerryblankJuly 28, 2008 - 11:00pmBlah blah....
Let me tell you about gay stories, OK?
I happen to be an immigrant from a fairly homophobic county. When I lost my job (I was here on a work visa), my partner was unable to sponsor me for immigration. We almost left the US. and relocated to a third country, foreign to the two of us. I was able to stay, and now I am fortunate to have a green card. Soon I will be a citizen. My personal story is full of drama and suffering.... but you know what?! Compared with other people I got lucky. I hear stories about same-sex couples with immigration issues all the time. We got lucky.
And so did you, Mr. Don't come guilt tripping me with boohooo "It strikes me as extremely arrogant to dismiss my experience as just luck." boohoo.....
We all have sad stories to tell, and some of us are luckier than others. YOU WERE LUCKY! You did not get your skull smashed by fellow soldiers. You did not get raped, nor did you get subjected to psychological drama. By saying that your experience should not be dismissed let's me know how much you are unaware of how bad some of your comrades have it. Hang out more often at the www.sldn.org/ site.
....ohhhhh.... and before I forget.... Did you know that there was an openly gay service member back in the day? I am sooo sorry I can't remember his name. He was SOOO out that he even entertained the troops with drag shows. The LGBT community at the time was going to use him as a case to end the ban on LGBT people in the military. But alas! He was black and had an ear piercing, so he was not "normal" enough. So our community decided not to move forward... had the LGBT community had cojones back then, we probably would have never needed Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue, Don't Harass in the first place.

Just explain to me why don't ask isn’t an improvement on the previous DoD policy? Do that before you’re tempted to go off on another tangent.
Am I lucky? I guess we’ll just have to disagree about what being lucky means. To me, you’re lucky when you win the lottery, are the lone survivor in a plane crash, or have something positive and out of the ordinary happen. You’re incredibly unlucky if you get your skull bashed in, get raped, struck by lighting…

I don’t need to go to the SLDF to find out how bad it can be in the military. Maybe YOU should go somewhere other than SLDF.com before you make sweeping generalizations about my experience, or anyone else’s. You don’t go to a battered women’s shelter and then apply the experiences there to the entire population. You wouldn’t apply the population norms at the county jail to the entire city. Just as the poor bastards SLDF puts forward do not represent experiences the majority of service members share.

In the mean time, felons are now allowed in, education requirements have been dropped and the age limit raised to 42 years old.
The right wing feels it is much more "moral" to send mothers and fathers to fight and die than single men who want to go. Go figure.

By deanrddJuly 27, 2008 - 1:05pmWhat is AAR not telling us THIS time?
Something sinister is afoot at AAR again. Every time Air America makes a change in programming, or someone leaves, subtle changes take place that seem only slightly irritating at the time. To those of us who have lived through this scenario many times, these are clues to an inevitable dropping of a bomb...
I fear there is a similar situation with our loss of the Air America podcast of TRMS. I have noticed that they have pulled The Rachel Maddow Show from iTunes. You can no longer subscribe to TRMS podcasts from there. And the most disturbing aspect of this is, even though there have been NUMEROUS pleas for information on the blogs for the past 2 days, there has been a silent, cricket response from the company. What gives, and why won't they answer our questions?
Are they trying to wean us off of Rachel before telling us that she will no longer be at Air America? Consider that the same silence was heard from AAR just prior to the loss of Marc, Jeannine, Marty, Lizz (sniff...), Mike, Sam, and Randi.
Come on, AAR. Come clean and stop playing us for chumps. We're paying you, remember?

20 plus year association with his mentor rev. wright,, he must admit that association was a political move ,to insure that he would be perceived black enough,to get black folks to support him ,,or he has to beg for forgiveness from the american people ,not give a speech about prejudices, and move on like all is forgotten , he has a snowballs chance in hell to become leader of the world if he does not justify that association.
