TODAY'S SHOW: WEDNESDAY, MAY 7TH 2008
Did you go to bed last night thinking that Hillary would be endorsing Obama by early this morning and then experienced confusion when you woke up only to see her campaigning hard as ever in West Virginia? If so, it is not your fault. The media had all but pronounced her dead, D-E-D, DEAD. But as Rachel's been saying for weeks there is no primary that will push her to step down. Only the super delegates can push her out. So that is what Rachel will be talking about-- the super delegate math and political realities of having a Clinton in the race. In the first hour Rachel will talk to Rolling Stone contributor Matt Taibbi about his new book, The Great Derangement, and then David Bender will join Rachel in the third hour to talk about the media creations in this Democratic primary.

Rev. Wright and a Children's Story in Japan
Dear Rachel,
Have you heard a children's story in Japan called "Red Ogre and Blue Ogre" (precisely speaking, the title is "Red Ogre that cried"). Recent Rev. Wright's speech at the National Press Club reminded me of this story. What do you think?
I love your show.
Cheers,
Yoichi
The story is like as follows (from my memory):
Red Ogre and Blue Ogre
Once upon a time, there lived Red Ogre and Blue Ogre near a
village. Red Ogre wanted to make friends with the villagers and
he posted a sign stating:
Everyone is welcome.
Please stop by.
There are some yummy sweets and nice tea.
Red Ogre
in front of his hut. The villagers were however so scared that
nobody visited Red Ogre.
Red Ogre lamented deeply. Blue Ogre was emphasized with Red
Ogre and said to him, "I have a good idea. Come to the village
tomorrow morning."
Next day, Red Ogre went down to the village and saw Blue Ogre
bullying the villagers. Red Ogre was outraged and violently
kicked Blue Ogre out of the village. Blue Ogre got hurt and ran
away with crying. The villagers became overwhelmingly grateful
for Red Ogre and offered a thank-you visit to his hut.
Red Ogre was delighted. He asked the villagers some time to
prepare for the visit. When Red Ogre went back to his hut with
great joy after harvesting wild berries for the villagers, he
found a letter on the table. Red Ogre opened it and started
reading.
Dear my best friend,
I have just seen that the villagers left for your hut. It
seems that everything is going well. I am leaving this
place because my presence may hurt the relationship between
you and the villagers. I will not see you again.
Wishing you all the best,
Blue Ogre
Red Ogre started weeping. His tears soaked the letter.

I was watching the news this morning and Nora What's-her-face said that YOU said the night before that Clinton would not quit just like that. I think it was great how you asked your co-panelists to explain to you why Indiana was different from any other state in the sense that if she hadn't quit before there was no reason for her to quit now.
So no, not ALL pundits were saying that she was dead. ;)

Dear Rachel, I was on the same page as you were last evening on msnbc. I was uncertain what some people heard, when they thought they heard her start to ride into the sunset. I thought she was a bit brazen in her comments, and many expected her to be making her concession speech, and apparently heard one. She is apparently expecting some sort of deus ex machina experience to teleport her from the current stituation. I can no longer see her as anything but the wrong person at the wrong moment. I might vote for Chelsea in 20 years, though.

By toosinbeymenMay 8, 2008 - 9:14amSlappy and Snarky...late night primary coverage
Yes, we watched the whole thing, right to the end. At about 10pm MST we were getting a little slappy and started poking fun at most anything, Chris spitting on people, Chuck spending the weekend playing Xbox in his unders listening to Black Sabbath. It was really getting goofy.
So we changed the channel to Fox News. All these old guys trying to keep there eyes open and the hubby says: "During the commercial break on Fox it's shots of red bull with a geritol chaser."
Once we stopped crying from laughter it was back to MSNBC where Pat had somehow taken on two red cups to Rachel's none. "He can't steal the show for her, so he just took her coffee."
Hill was out of it before, she is way out there now... but, you can't say we don't enjoy the political process. :)

Just as great to hear/see you back on R2TWH. I have no doubt that the day will come when you'll be able to completely control your media appearances, but for now I'm sure that you need to take every opportunity offered for air by MSNBC to get any air, and more down the road - and I'm thrilled to see you going after them all - and how much you make of every one. I've been a fan since the Chuck & Liz days, and I've paid for the Premium podcast of your show pretty much since you gave us the option. I've even started watching Olberman's show because you turn up there with some regularity. You're an important part of my day.
I have less than zero interest in the simulcast of Gregory's nattering show, and I think David Bender's good but I have very little interest in the call-in format. It was bad enough losing Kent, now you seem to be fading away from your own show. Don't do it!
Please, please, please Rachel, return to format! We tune in to your show to hear YOU and your take on things, not some call-in show (albeit with a great host), and certainly not some poofy-haired liberal spokesmodel. We want you.

By AgeeJimMay 7, 2008 - 9:42pmNext time, say yes, you are a god!
Love you, Rachel, and you are probably right that Hillary will not quit the race on her own initiative, but....to the weird, Citizen-Kane-hall-of-mirrors extent that you, Rachel, are part of the meta, and considering how desperately you, Rachel, and the rest of us desperately want this self-destructive primary-gone-into-sudden-death-overtime to end, my humble suggestion is that the next time Tim Russert or whoever says, it's over, Hillary's out, you should take a deep breath, cross your fingers behind your back and say, why yes, Tim, that is exactly what I was thinking! Y'all are so right! Just bat your eyelashes and, as my grandmother used to say, offer it up for the souls in purgatory. Because this is a through-the-looking-glass situation where being accurate is not necessarily being right, kinda like in Ghostbusters, when Bill Murray tells Zul, No, I'm not a god, and gets toasted. I say this not as an Obamamaniac, although Hillary's decompensation over the last few months has caused me great distress, but as someone who shares your sense of urgency that we unify the voters behind one Democratic nominee basically yesterday. I hope that sounds more pragmatic than cynical.... And try Dan Ackroyd's advice: Next time, say yes, you are a god!

The paradigm of Red = Republican, Blue = Democrat is the exact OPPOSITE of what I saw ABC was doing in 1976, 1980, maybe up through 1988. I usually watched ABC coverage so the cliché of Red = Rep/ Blue = Dem got me all confused when it became sealed in the public discourse around 2000.

By sunsawedMay 7, 2008 - 10:52pmHillary's Chances
Well, it now boils down to either a) Obama eating a Baby on LIVE TV or B) him being hit by a meteor.
But the truth of the matter is this is has been the case since Obama racked up the streak of 11 straight wins while Hillary pursued her "United States That Matter" campaign. The way the Democratic Nomination system works is that Winner does NOT take all. If you BARELY win, you rack up a one or two delegate advantage. The only way to get an advantage in a CLOSE RACE is to win by NUMBER of States or to be able to get a few BLOW-OUTS. Hillary BLOWING OFF states and not treating EVERY state as one she should win, virtually GUARANTEED she would LOSE, albeit by an underwhelming margin.
Obama's advantage reflects the SUPERIORITY of Howard Dean's "50-State Strategy rather than the DLC's general strategy of focusing on specific BIG Pies. Obama's success shows, again the superiority of Dean (who CLEARLY won back the Senate in 2006 using 50-States over the DLC's (who got Gore and Kerry razor-thin losses in '00-'04).
An Obama victory, mayhaps, can PUT TO REST, the whole CLINTON and DLC paradigm that the only way for Democrats to beat Republicans is for them to MASQUERADE as "Better Republicans." And if so, Halelujah!!!!
It worked for Bill, but proved DISASTEROUS for Gore and Kerry. It could NEVER for Obama, and he KNEW it and didn't accept it. KUDOS to him for it!!!
If the Democrats truly want to GOVERN this nation they can't hide behind Old Lib MANTRAS like "Republicans are EVIL, money-grubbing SCOUNDRELS" and put forth a POSITIVE message to the electorate as to WHY they should be in charge, WHAT they can OFFER to the American people. Why Democrats are RIGHT, not why Republicans are WRONG.
Obama HAS to be the forefront of this NEW strategy. He can't be on the DEFENSIVE, fighting every ridiculous Right-Wing INSINUATION about his Character, based upon "Guilt by Association." In order to do so, he cannot allow the Right-Wing to DEFINE him. They only way is to get out there and DEFINE HIMSELF.
He has to take strong stances on the issues that appeal to voters and make it so clear that charges that maybe he's a "SECRET Mulsim" or a "SECRET Terrorist Symp" seem patently RIDICULOUS.
Simply ATTACKING McCain will not do this. Even connecting McCain to failed Republican policies. You have to offer something BETTER.
When we talk about the "Electability" of Obama vs Clinton, it is always framed into how each will respond to Right-Wing ATTACKS, or CONFORMING to the biases of the voters (Working-Class Whites, etc.) rather than trying to WIN OVER segments of the electorate and DEFEATING the counter-arguments.

By drmenachemMay 8, 2008 - 7:08amThe "Final Exam" miracle
That's what Clinton is hoping for. Like a student who's gotten grades of 16%, 20%, and 15% on her semester exams (for example), doesn't heed the professor's "strong recommendation" to withdraw from the course (for example), and cruises towards the final exam in hope of, I don't know what, some "Matrix"-like knowledge dump of organic chemistry (er, delegates) into her brain.
As with said student, it still is mathematically *possible* to pass the course, but it isn't *realistic*. The professor (voter) watches the train wreck coming and knows she will have to issue the student's F at the bitter end. As I tell students in similar situations, 'tis better to have a withdrawal W on your transcript than an F.

That being the case, why bother investigating the hard evidence that indicates otherwise? It would be as fruitless as reopening the Warren Commission findings, or the IRAN-CONTRA affair, or for that matter the voter purge list that "ALLEGEDLY" gave the hyena the 3% VICTORY in Indiana this week, or the 9.4% white catholic majority in PA earlier. Non-ID'ed nuns barred from polls:
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gRN59j2QQCVZYwfdLSokUeN1K9hQD90GDRGG0
About 12 Indiana nuns were turned away Tuesday from a polling place by a fellow sister because they didn't have state or federal identification bearing a photograph.
Sister Julie McGuire said she was forced to turn away her fellow members of Saint Mary's Convent in South Bend, across the street from the University of Notre Dame, because they had been told earlier that they would need such an ID to vote.
The nuns, all in their 80s or 90s, didn't get one but came to the precinct anyway.
"One came down this morning, and she was 98, and she said, 'I don't want to go do that,'" Sister McGuire said. Some showed up with outdated passports. None of them drives.
They weren't given provisional ballots because it would be impossible to get them to a motor vehicle branch and back within the 10 days allotted by the law, Sister McGuire said. "You have to remember that some of these ladies don't walk well. They're in wheelchairs or on walkers or electric carts."
Nonetheless, she said, the convent will make a "very concerted effort" to get proper identification for the nuns in time for the general election. "We're going to take from now until November to get them out and get this done.
I hope SCOTUS is happy now.

This must be discussed. Hillary is marching on despite the odds because she is positioned to make an independent run for the presidency. Nobody predicted Lieberman would do that, look what happened. This independent run would probably guarantee a republican victory. Before you dismiss this idea, consider she has a huge following, the party is divided, and she has played the martyr role in the past.

By artistictravelerMay 8, 2008 - 3:31pmA plea from an avid fan
Rachel,
I am not sure if you will ever get around to reading this, and I am not sure how often it has been echoed here, but I feel I must make mention of the "Race for the White House" that is blasting through my mp3 player every morning when I select The Rachel Maddow Show, Hour 1.
I fully appreciate your making inroads on MSNBC and agree with David Bender that more Maddow is always a great thing. I love the rapport with Olbermann, and love how you've taken property away from "Scarborough Country."
But I feel that Race for the White House is so beneath your talents and against everything for which I choose to listen to your program -- lengthy, rational interpretations and explanations of the issues.
Instead, we get a hyperventalation David Gregory tossing out every tired cliche in the biz (I'm a former reporter myself), and trying to reduce national issues to USA Today "McNews" style nuggets. "Next up, we'll take it to floor! We'll hit the streets! We'll swing for the fences! We'll pull no punches! We'll do the hokey pokey! etc. etc." All of this is set to a maddening, bombastic hair-metal rock riff. UGH!
If there is any person/people/power that be in MSNBC who need to be lobbied so that you can be placed on a rational, substantive show (preferrably your own!) that would be an accurate reflection of your talents, please let me know. I will be the first to start the petition.
I know that it's baby steps, but it makes me cringe when I hear your thoughts -- which are usually reflective, researched, thoughtful and intellectual -- reduced to a 15-second response before Gregory is barking at his next guest who's "ready to play!"
Sorry for the rant and I will always dowloard hours two and three! Continue to be the best progressive voice we have today.

By capn_crustyMay 8, 2008 - 5:27pmRachel missed the Lurita Doan shoe drop story
Last Friday Rachel reported on Lurita Doan's unexpected sudden resignation as head of the Government Services Administration. Doan was able to stay on the job for 11 months after she was found in violation of the Hatch Act. Her resignation was effective immediately. Rachel rightly said that the out-of-the-blue resignation begged the question, "When will the other shoe drop?"
Rachel, the other shoe dropped. And you reported it but you didn't link the two together.
The other shoe was the FBI raid of the Office of Special Counsel. Besides the 'Geeks on Call' scandal, the OSC was the agency that found Lurita Doan in violation of the Hatch Act. It wasn't Congress or some judge somewhere. It was the OSC.
Seems to me that the White House was tipped off last week about the raid and decided that it would look bad if some nosy reporter (as if there are any) went looking into the goings on at the OSC. They might have found that the OSC found Doan in violation of the Hatch Act. Then they might have decided to look into 'where are they now' with respect to Doan. Low and behold, they would have found her still on the job.
The White House knew how bad it would look with Doan and Scott Bloch occupying the same news cycle. One scandal at a time is tolerable.

Rachel,
I am a real fan of you AND the "boys. However they all owe you an apology. On election night when Keith Olberman said he finally disagreed with you, because you heard Hillary's speech after IN as a declartion of more "scortched earth" and the rest of the panel (male) heard a concession speech. As we see today, with the race card being played again, that you were able to "hear" an other woman in a way the men did not. Refer to "You Just Don't Understand; Women and Men in Conversation," by Deborah Tannen, and other works on the subject. The genders speak, listen and "hear" differently.
It does not seem to me that the Clintons (I'm actully feeling sorry for Wolfson today, having been sent out to spread "the word") can get away from their hysteria-mode. Winning is all it is about for them. And yet, they will not win; and if Obama loses in the fall, she will be blamed. Where is Vernon Jordan when you need him to speak sense to them? Is there anyone else whom they will let in? If the superdelagates will have to embarrass her to push her off the stage, it will make it impossible for Hillary supporters to vote Democratic in the fall. Not only will we lose the White House, but the undertickets will be hammered throughout the country. We have an opportunity to set the national agenda again, and we are going to lose it.
I am,

By lucylapMay 8, 2008 - 6:09pm9/11 Truth too important for Taibbi's iconoclastic clowning
Matt Taibbi is a talented writer, but he crosses an important line by collectively labeling all 9/11 truth seekers as delusional and paranoid. He lampoons, dismisses, ridicules, parodies, and insults everyone who questions the "official" conspiracy story, and then bemoans his own "victimization" by truthers - merely stings from the hornet's nest he has gleefully stirred up himself. He never delves too deeply into objective reality - things like elementary physics, timelines, video evidence, or eyewitness testimony- because these things are very hard to ridicule, and damn near impossible to disprove. They also require analysis as opposed to glibness. His targets are not things, they are the people who ask too many questions for his comfort zone. These people are therefore suffering from a collective form of paranoid delusion, Matt wil be happy to inform you. I would love to see Matt in an open debate with architect Richard Gage. http://www.ae911truth.org/.
Taibbi is having way too much fun at the expense of those courageous enough to dissent and question the official "conspiracy theory" as explained by the 9/11 Commission - now even abandoned by some of the commissioners themselves. He might consider offering a percentage of his book royalties to the families of surviving first responders as penance [having recently joined a religious group].
More likely his proven talents as a disinformation agent will land him job offers as an MSNBC political commentator .
Victims of 9/11 such as the Jersey Girls had to petition the government for years before a Commission was set up. They were among the first "truthers", and are still raising important questions. Also among those "truthers" who Taibbi lampoons as delusional [by association] are: Senator Lincoln Chafee, Sen. Max Cleland, Sen. Mike Gravel [AK 69-80], Sen. Mark Dayton [MN 01-06], Gen. Wesley Clark, Maj Gen Albert Stubblebine, Capt Edgar Mitchell [former astronaut], Lt. Col Karen Kwiatkowski, Maj.Scott Ritter, Wayne Madsen, William Christison [29-year CIA veteran], Sibel Edmonds, Gov Jesse Ventura,

...to be hung ten times over. We don't need more revelations about Elvis impersonators flying UFO's into the Secret Fava-bean Diet Center in Building Seven; what we need is for the American people to pull their heads out of their collective asses and demand something be done about the PROVABLE offenses.
Good luck with that.
