TODAY'S SHOW: THURSDAY, MAY 8TH 2008

By Vanessa Silverton-Peel

If you want to know more about John McCain, if you feel like he has been lost in the Democratic primary storm and he's been sailing along without any real opposition, then listen to the Arizona media, the folks who know him best.  On today's show Rachel will be talking to Rick Hansen from the Arizona Republic who argues in an article today that McCain doesn't deserve the maverick crown placed on his head by the national main stream media.

MSNBC Show

I think Rachel will agree with this:
1. Hillary does not want the VP spot. Just like John Edwards doesn't.
2. Hillary is in this to win. Not to be exit nicely.
3. Hillary is too old to run in 4 years. She's not thinking that way either.
4. Women want to be addressed as her main supporters.

Why would she want it? Each

Why would she want it? Each of these offerings is patronizing and clueless. Hillary MUST be given the next most powerful position in the country. And that ain't VP for god's sake. She needs to work, unlike Obama. She LOVES work.

MSNBC Show

Hillary, the 'new popu-last' was just in my rather upscale Oregon town, Ashland, schmoozing with folks who had to come up with $250 just to get in the door. How is that possible??? I would think she'd be out working in the pear orchards just like she did as a child, growing up in Oregon!!!!!!
I'd never give her a dollar to pay off her huge debt incurred because her huge ego won't accept the obvious, it's "Obama Time"!!
One point, people keep pointing out that Barack has to spend more money than Billary in state campaigns.....well, excuse me!!! She's had 20 years of free publicity, name exposure and a gigantic political machine that needs to be met head-on by Obama. When people get to know him, they LIKE him!!! If it takes more money, which his campaign has available, to get in front of the public then spend, baby, spend!!
Like I said, "It's Obama Time"!!!

The Show

WHY ARE THERE MEN ON RACHEL'S SHOW??????? If I wanted to listen to a bunch of guys opinions I would watch MSNBC (which I do, Countdown) or any of the other guy shows. I listen to Rachel's show to here HER, not guys. I think she is the smartest woman on TV or Radio. I wish MSNBC would give her a TV show. I love her when she guests on Countdown. But please get the guys OFF the Rachel Maddow show. PLEASE. They are ruining my afternoons with Rachael. At the very least let her be the moderator! It is her show! And Rachel, I completely agreed with you on primary night, Hillary is not going to quit any time soon. Way to stick to your own opinion! You are my HERO! I am a white 53 yr old woman, and I am not voting for Hillary!! I would however vote for Rachel. :)

Rachel's Comment

If you follow the America Cup of sailing, then you may remember when they kept changing the rules for Dennis Connor to win against the America 3 (cubed) team, the women's team. Just one more race, just one more race. It's just like Rachel said, they keep changing the rules so that the boys can win.

expressive

Watched you on MSNBC... you can barely contain the expression that say this MoFu is crazy while you are listening to Pat rant

RE: Rachel's question; Why haven't delgates deluged Obama?

Rachel you are way too smart to posit such a naive question. The Clinton's OWN the DLC. You don't think the Clinton machine can hold off this deluge while she tries as many tricks as she can to reshape the Media and public perception of her into a possible winner? Look at the committee that will be meeting May 31st. Headed by none other than Clinton super-loyalist, (as well as the one who set up the delegate system that Hillary is fighting)....Harold Ickes.

I agree with you that Clinton is not done yet and not done trying to damage Obama. She made public again today her claim that he has prevented the votes in Michigan and Florida from being counted. Her letter to Obama claims it isn't good enough to seat them at convention with a compromise...So what then? She just gets them ALL?. ( I read Obama's legal Pdf.to Michigan. They laid out conditions that made certain he wouldn't be counted out; and were willing to work it out.) Those conditions were not met and it was the legislature in Michigan who decided on no re-vote.

Her last chance is to create a PERCEPTION that there are viable metrics which give HER the votes from Florida and Michigan AND that the popular vote is the ONLY one that really counts now. Which by the way, DISENFRANCHISES ALL OF US VOTERS WHO ARE IN CAUCUS STATES--apparently THAT vote loss doesn't bother her as she goes about pleading for every "precious vote".

I have tried up til now to stay away from coming down on Clinton. But I am just getting sick of her hypocritical concern about counting every vote. Early on in campaign when she assumed she would be nominee, she claimed Michigan "didn't matter". And NOW their every vote matters sooo much. Also her campaign is claiming she never agreed to take her name off ballot in Michigan even though there IS a statement signed by her that says just that. Howard Dean verified this in an interview.

I defended the Clintons mightily all through the '90's. I feel betrayed by how they are conducting this do-whatever-it-takes campaign.

An example of one uncommitted super

My Congressman, Jerry McNerney (CA-11) is still uncommitted as a superdelegate. There is a reason for this.

He could line up for Obama because Obama is the more progressive candidate just like McNerney is. Also, Obama is most likely to win the nomination. Everyone likes being on the winning team.

He could line up for Clinton because she carried his congressional district and the state. Bill Clinton's October campaign appearance in '06 may have put McNerney over the top in defeating a powerful Republican (Richard Pombo). It wouldn't look good to turn one's back on that kind of help.

Also, McNerney is a freshman Congressman in a slightly Republican leaning district. His Republican challenger for '08 can self fund his own campaign with a million or two dollars. McNerney doesn't want to look as if he is pissing off the supporters of the candidate he doesn't choose. They might choose to not vote for him in November. He needs those votes.

It's a tough call for him.

Nice Try....but flawed

I just heard the interview with Mr. Hansen, regarding McCain's "Maverick" label, and I felt I had to write. Mr. Hansen's analysis was FUNDAMENTALLY FLAWED! McCain got his label from bucking the Republican party on politically-sensitive (i.e lots of media coverage) issues - to ignore those votes in the analysis makes Mr. Hansen's approach flawed from the start. Secondly, on the analysis put forth by Mr. Hansen, McCain voted with the Republican party 51 of 70 times on critical issues (I believe those were the numbers). Is that statistically different than the other members of the party? You imply that it is not, but I would like to see/hear the proof. If I had the data, I could tell you (If you haven't figured it out, I am a statistician by trade.).
Finally, I caution you, Ms. Maddow: you refer to McCain's "Maverick" label and the press' inaction in challenging it as "frustrating." That is a personal emotion applied to a non-personal relationship, and thus demeans your credibility. Please be more professional in your apporach to national issues that are not personal in nature.

A Way to Heal the Party

With the new phenomenon of online fund raising, what would you think of starting a Democratic Party Unity Fund. This would be used to help offset expenses ocurred during the campaign once one of them concede, providing they haven't damaged the party's chances in Nov.

I am confused about Hillary's intentions

I really was having a bit of a difficult time trying to follow Rachel's argument about what Hillary's primary intention is in this campaign. I'm not daft, just a little confused.

Does Rachel think that Hillary is in this to win it at any cost, and she doesn't care what she does to Obama in the process? If that is the case, why would the superdelegates allow this to happen, as this nomination is clearly in their hands now.

My own feeling, is that they want her to go out on a positive note, to try and save face, as she is likely to win fairly big in W. VA (does this state ever go Dem. though in the general?), and perhaps Kentucky.

I am listening if someone would like to take the time to explain Rachel's POV.

Thanks.

Bye Bye TV Baby and future(?) Sonderkommando

Been an AA fan since the start. Watched the core of what made AA great destroyed as Marc Maron, Mike Malloy and finally Randi were forced off the air by the foolish triangulating of AA management. What little remains is not worth the price of a podcast. I hope Sam and Thom retain their integrity, and don't succumb to the moral rationalization that comes with striving for 'mainstream' acceptance.

It’s too bad. Rachel is intelligent, and understands the depths of depravity inherent in the NeoCons and their ilk. However, she has a belief in a nonexistent system that blinds her to a greater evil, the machine of global capitalism of which the NeoCons are only a pawn, an ideological front for the ongoing rape and pillage of the planet and its inhabitants.

Ask Martin, Bobby or John what I'm trying to convey. Or Pat Tillman. Or the millions of Vietnamese, Central Americans or Iraqis who cry from their graves for justice. An afternoon's research can point the way to understanding how a small groups can machinate events, how those who fight for humanity are marginalized and denigrated.

Among others, check out Evidence of Revision, Trails of Tears, Loss of Innocence and The American Ruling Class on Google Video to see where I'm coming from. For readers, try Michael Parenti. Listeners should try Unwelcome Guests or Taking Aim available free at Radio4all.net.

I'm also a student, formal and informal, of world history, have been for 40 years. All I say here and below meets my standards of historical context, observable reality and the scientific method for determining the degree of truth behind any assertion.

Yesterday's interview with the sneering Rolling Stone ( a magazine that hasn't been cool since Donny Osmond was on the cover) writer was my last straw. Denigrating 9-11 truthers is easy as long as you don't engage in open and honest debate. That's to be expected from those who will not confront the harsh realities of who rules this country and how they go about doing it. Even Chomsky himself will not look at evidence that shows at minimum criminal negligence, dismissing out of hand physical evidence of disintegrating steel, disappearing planes and blatant acts of covering up that indicate much more.

I see this again and again. Over there, against foreigners, they create terrorists, assassinate leaders, conspire to overthrow governments, steal and murder at will. For some strange reason, they can't cross the line and do it here. Guess what? People who murder have little or no compunction about murdering anywhere. To think for one minute that those who torture, destroy all liberty and start preemptive wars would flinch from murdering us is an exercise in wishful thinking.

For the cop perspective, see Mike Ruppert. For science, Richard Gage and Stephen Jones. I have yet to see any official conspiracy believers come up with any evidence to support their theory. Ad hominem attacks on those who disagree are about as good as it gets.

I admit we have some strange speculating types in our midst. I suspect at least some of these to be agents of disinformation, as we saw in the Anti-Vietnam War and Civil Rights movements, etc. and so forth. The others are probably well intentioned if somewhat prone to unexamined beliefs, like people who profess the efficacy of numerology or astrology. Or Christianity for that matter.

Worst of all was the compliment to Evangelical sincerity. Those who would gladly rekindle the ovens and shove us inside are given the kid glove treatment. Made even more horrible by Rachel's fawning, it all adds up to a sell out. Very reminiscent of Cokie Roberts (a true SonderKommando) in her descent into the ‘mainstream’.

I wish Rachel well, and that she turns her back on AA and the empty suits she has befriended. They serve no worthwhile purpose, add nothing to our understanding, are only good for holding up the facade hiding a decayed and dying society, and who will turn you into a willing accomplice in the destruction of all that is decent.

9/11 liars...

Wow.. Jslavicek... You sure are full of yourself...

The 9/11 truthers came up in the conversation yesterday in reference to people who send HATE MAIL to our Ms. Maddow. Your truther friends.. (or you? ) apparently indulge in sending hate mail to the good doctor. How does disclosing that nasty bit of TRUTH constitute denigration? Apparently the "truthers" don't want the TRUTH to come out.

But hey.. Rachel Maddow doesn't need to answer to you.. or your bizarro world conspiracy theories..
You aren't even in her league...

Hell, you aren't even on her planet..

or anyone else's.

I prefer the term "Conspiracy HYPOTHESIST"

A "theory" is something that has stood the test of truth and remains valid. A "hypothesis" has yet to be tested, but remains plausible.

Hmm. Come to think of it, maybe "conspiracy NOTIONALIST" would be more fitting.

Insert :cheese: emoti here.

Dammit, let's get those emoti's back, okay?

Capn

You want the emoti's back? Hell, we can't even get Rachel Maddow back!

I also want...

...Kent Jones back. Well-behaved buccaneers rarely make history.

"You measure democracy by the freedom it gives its dissidents, not by the freedom it gives its assimilated conformists"--Abbie Hoffman

Seconded!

Yeah, what happened to Kent? I really enjoyed him too!

Kent...

...was canned four days before xmas by the morans (sic) at AAR (not to be confused with "Arrrrr"). Allegedly it was done for "economic reasons"...but then they turned right around and hired David Bender. Yeah, I don't get that logic, either.

You should try to open your mind some Athena...

The day anyone can explain building 7 to me is the day I stop questioning the "official" version of that day's events. The world saw 3 controlled demolitions that day and most of the world acknowledged it. Only in this country do we refuse to believe our own eyes simply because our government tells us to. Even the news slugs carrying the event live commented on how it looked like a controlled demolition. Open your eyes.

where are the feminists? Ladies, don't be weak!

Why is it such a double standard to be a feminist and a Hillary supporter? Why must there be such a bi-polar state of feminism? Love or Hate = Hillary Clinton. It's so ironic, that in 2008, the most progressive time in history, I feel like women are still scared of standing up for what they believe in and just plain scared of admitting they would truly like to stand behind a strong, sophisticated woman who wants to kicks some ass.

Where are the feminists

Why is it a double standard to be a strong woman and NOT be a Hillary supporter? Why is it that women of any age are "scared" when they have substantive reasons for not supporting her candidacy. I want a strong President who is smart, thoughtful, has integrity, true to him/herself, willing to explore new ideas, not pander and Hillary Clinton is not all those things. As a smart, sophisticated woman said in another blog "NOT THIS GAL AND NOT THIS TIME.

Note to Air America sponsors

Every day on my way home I listen to Rachel's show. I've been known to sit in my driveway for an hour to hear an interview that she's been teasing.

I'm not listening to this Race for the White House crap any more. Today I changed the channel. Oddly enough, I landed on a program I enjoyed very much. The longer you keep playing these idiots arguing with each other over things that do not matter, the more often I am going to change the channel.

When I hear Rachel again, I'll listen to your commercials again.

Tell Air America to stop this crap and put Rachel's show back on.

Ramsey Lewis

If the Hillary talk on the airwaves and the misogynist bamboo stake-lined pits and poor spelling on this blog are getting you down, try listening to Ramsey Lewis. Smart, funny, sexy, virtuoso, with fascinating citations throughout his music. I just downloaded the thirteen albums available online (apart from the Christmas album--ewww) and they're working very well for me on my current insane work project. When will there be an audiobook of Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon," by the way? Listening to the audiobook version of his "Quicksilver" novel just makes me nervous. As in, we have so many problems in the world today, but lo! (low!) the 17th-century issues were even more troubling. Plus it's abridged. It's possibly the influence of too much talk radio, because I do love *reading* those novels.

fixture? I was hoping that you were just testing it out.

I see most of the commenters prefer NOT having it.

I recommend moving Rachel into the 3~6pm slot so that she can do her teevee stuff afterward.

Scarborough is atrocious. If I want to hear him, I'll just turn on the idiot box.

Ramsey Lewis (cont.)

... EXCEPT for that easy listening smoove jazz album from 1992. Ouch, Ramsey! Maybe I'll appreciate it more ten years from now, the way I appreciate Barry White today. One of the coolest aspects of R.L. is his fearlessness, though.

My favorite Ramsey Lewis album isn't available online yet: "Come On, Baby."

General Comment

Hi Rachel,

I just want to comment on the segment that you are doing simulcast on cable news (Race for the White House?). I LOVE your show, but I HATE this segment. There is a reason I don't watch cable news. The LAST person I want to hear from on Air America is a blow hole like Joe Scarborough.

I only get to listen to your first hour and really looked forward to it. Now I just change to a music station for my drive home. Please let me know when this segment will be discontinued so I tune back to Air America.

I have to second that

I know it's good for Rachel and Air America that she's on David Gregory's program and countering some punditocracy nonsense, but I can't stand to listen. I tried. The constant heavy music in the background drives me nuts, and the conversation isn't worth listening to anyway. I listen by podcast, and I've taken to listening on the computer instead of the ipod because I can easily skip the first hour. My suggestion is move David Bender's hour to the first hour instead of the third, and have Rachel do the last two so she can keep doing MSNBC.

OK, I'll call you crazy

OK Rachel, I'll call you crazy for thinking the superdelegates will settle this. They've been to cowardly (sorry for the harsh word, but that's what I think it is) to declare after all this time, and even now many still won't. With the exception of party officials who need neutrality to run their states' caucuses and primaries, there was no reason not to declare weeks ago. So seriously Rachel, do you think these gutless wonders would overturn the pledged delegate result? Not a chance.

..."my" congressdude, has just thrown his superdelegatude to Obama. A local union, whose president is also an OR super-D, has endorsed the skinny, jug-eared kid as well. And apparently some super-D from Joisey has done the same thing.

Personally, I could care less which corporatist gets the nod; of the Big Three, Obama's probably the best, but that's like saying the gutter is better than the septic tank or the outhouse. Nevertheless, I thought it was newsworthy. Here's the link.

I Don't Listen to Rachel Anymore

Rachel,

This Race to the out house crap HAS TO STOP!!! When I hear DiscoDavid Gregory I immediately change channels. Eventually I will give up my XM and go back to NPR. I do not listen to AA to hear a bunch of shitheads argue about who white people under the age of 37 with two years of college that were born on Thursday voted for. I want news analysis from intelligent NON-corporate sources. Air America's collaboration with MSNBC is the EXACT OPPOSITE.

A former fan

She doesn't care

Face it, fans, Rachel doesn't care about you. She cares about her bank account. That means that for all intents and purposes, she has crossed over to the Republican party. Ignore the people as long as the checks clear. Sad, very, very sad.

doubledave

There are plenty of TRMS listeners who have expressed their opinions about the R4TWH simulcast here on this blog. One of the things we have tried to do, in voicing our feelings, is to keep personal assumptions or attacks out of it. I request that you do the same. I understand your need to vent. However, please keep the venting targeted accurately -- i.e., *not* at Rachel. To do otherwise isn't fair. It isn't right. Most importantly, it isn't true.

Ignore Rachel...

...but listen to some unknown, anonymous blogger. Yeah, that works.

"You measure democracy by the freedom it gives its dissidents, not by the freedom it gives its assimilated conformists"--Abbie Hoffman

Wow. If you think Rachel

Wow. If you think Rachel has crossed over to the Republican party, you haven't been paying attention.

She's breaking into a new market, and good for her. I love her show, but one day she won't do it anymore because she'll be on the tv machine big time. And that's fine.

I also understand that to get there, she's got to do this Race for the White House crap, to get her foot in. Again, I get that. Whatever.

I just DON'T want it on Air America, in place of her show. Play an old re-run of her show. Play David Bender doing her show, but don't subject us to the mindless argument-crap.

Insulting Rachel is not cool. It is not fair. And it is not warranted.

Support for Rachel

Rachel has been such a joy on so many levels to listen to. She has given her loyal listners so much to think about, laugh about, identify with etc...over the years on the Radio. She doesn't, however, belong to us. She is a wonderful voice of sanity and truth in the midst of so much chaos and if that voice can reach a larger audience perhaps we will all benefit. If I were seeking to leave my current gig to expand myself personally and professionally, I would hope that those who appreciated and benefiteed from my work would acknowledge the loss and at the same time... support and honor my growth. Rachel has a lot to offer and her path is hers not ours. We are fortunate to have her out there doing what she is doing. I for one opt to cut her some slack and wish her all the best in what might be a confusing, exhausting, all around hugely challenging transition in her career.

Agreed...

Certainly Rachel can do what she likes with her career and if that involves broadening her appeal to a more mass market, then more power to her. I still don't agree with the concept of the simulcast of a cable news show with her radio show. I would never watch the cable show, so I certainly won't waste my time listening either. I just really hope she is able to get a full time TV gig without sacrificing her radio show that I enjoy so much. Until then, I'll be listening to music on my drive home every night.

Amen!! Support Rachel!

If you don't like Race, listen/watch something else. In my area, the Jim Lehrer news hour is on then, so I watch that.

Bravo to all the women who undermined Hillary Clinton

Bravo! all the women who eagerly await Hillary Clinton's dismissal from the Presidential campaign....especially Rachel Maddow.Your eager endorsement has made it possible for a viable woman candidate not being a candidate for the Presidency for at least 20 years(Obama for 8 years, his running mate, most probably a male, 8 years). Also, when you start to complain there isn't enough women in powerful positions, you will have to sit quietly because your actions have enabled men to 'run the roost'...Bravo! to all those feminists...good going...NOT!

No can do

Sorry, but as long as Rachel is getting paid by the same corporation that helped enable the invasion and occupation of Iraq, a corporation that STILL enables propaganda to be used on the American public, she is part of the problem. She has been purchased. Lock, stock, and backbone Her opinion is now suspect. Her ties to MSNBC have reduced her credibility tremendously. Those ties have also reduced her listenership. She now pimps for ratings. And to allow that MSNBC propaganda on Air America is the end of Air America. I had high hopes for both Rachel and AA. Both have now shown that they can be purchased by war profiteer GE to further the carnage. Shameful.

If you find Rachel and Co so abhorrent...

...then why hang around? You obviously have nothing to add to the conversation other than ad hominen venom. Maybe it's because you like playing the part of the ethically superior man; you know, the kind that "pimps" to their own ego by attacking others'?

I'm sure you can find a more simpatico site. You might even take that "911 paranoia" clown with you. And don't let the screen door hit you on the way out.

"You measure democracy by the freedom it gives its dissidents, not by the freedom it gives its assimilated conformists"--Abbie Hoffman

doubledave

Obviously, poor doubledave here is going through the Kübler-Ross stages of grief over what he perceives to be the loss of TRMS as we know it:

1. Anger
2. Overdramatization
3. Sulky exaggeration
4. Bargaining
5. Income envy
6. Lack of imagination
7. Sputtery vitriol and accusation
8. Despair (characterized by public hissy fits)
9. Sentence fragments
10. More income envy

and, finally (if all goes well)

11. Perspective

Mr. Dave: Personally, I hope Maddow gets stinking rich. I suspect she’s out to transform cable news. That’s a tall order, don’t you think? I think she’s persistent and bright enough to pull it off. Why don’t you stick around and watch – maybe give her a chance? Or at the very least, give her a few months.

I’m no fan of these gladiator-type cable news shows, either. But what if Maddow were able to get her own show – maybe have control over story selection and more input into guest selection?

Hell, I’d pay her just for trying to elevate the quality of cable news.

You could try looking at it this way. Or you could try to drag all Maddow fans into cycling endlessly through steps 1-10 along with you.

SUMMARY OF THE FOREGOING

Good Lord, man, pull yourself together.

LOVED This!

There does seem to be a syndrome and I think you've captured the symptoms brilliantly.

Whoa, nellie - TRMS blog is a generally agreeable place...

... and we are open to differing opinions. We do like to debate and discuss, and even argue every so often.

However,

we take exception to purposely inappropriate, insulting, and intentionally hurtful comments. Such posts are not welcome here.

And if you continue this mode of behavior, you're liable to get a dressing-down from Rachel's mom. Yep, she reads the blog and comments from time to time. Don't make her have to do this on Mother's Day weekend.

Chemgirl

I cannot believe you played the Mommy card, you bad girl you.

Re: Mommy card

Aren't we all afraid of getting lectured (again) by Mrs. Maddow? I know I am.

:yikes:
:winky:

I have to admit

I have cut back on my blog cussing since it became known that Mrs. Maddow reads the blog.

So much so that I'm starting to run out of cussing euphemisms. I've used "dagnabbit," "danged," "heck," "honkin,'"and "dadgummit" so much lately that I'm starting to sound like Eddie Haskell.

And that's a very nice dress you're wearing today ...

... Mrs. Cleaver.

And I...

...don't refer to acts of bloodthirsty piratitude, either. As much.

Otherwise, Mrs Maddow might not let Rachel come out and play no more.
