John McCain, environmentalist?!

By Tim Einenkel

Listen: Running on someone else’s record (Maddow)

RACHEL MADDOW: Every day here on the Rachel Maddow Show, or whenever we feel like it, we do enjoy, poking a sharp stick at the soft white underbelly of the rrrrrrrrrrrightwing scheme machine <<SFX UBELLY>>, giving you a little peek at their political playbook.

Today’s underbelly political tactic?  Running on someone else’s record.

This is a tacit that that I think is particularly well used by members of the political class that know that the media likes them. Because if you are liked by the media, the way that manifest in day to day political coverage is that people kind of give you the benefit of the doubt. They don’t necessarily look for inconsistencies between what you say and how you’ve acted.   They don’t necessarily assume that you don’t understand something if you misstate it. And they don’t necessarily, I guess think the worst when given the option of how to interpret something you say that has less, less then a clear and definite meaning. All of these sort of benefits of the doubt are the I think the main, the sort of concrete game that politicians get from having cultivated a good relationship with the pres. It’s one of the reasons that having a likable personality can be a political asset. Because if politicians are liked by the reporters who are covering them; if there is a personally positive relationship because literally the reporter likes being in the company of the politician, then that can lead to the short of benefit of the doubt, the benefit of the doubt margin that you get from the political press when covering a politician.

John McCain is a prime candidate for running on someone else’s record because of the relationship he has with the press. John McCain, I believe- for example, has been running on somebody else’s record on veterans issues.  Counting on the fact that because he personally, famously is a veteran – people will assume he’s got a good voting record on supporting veterans.  Which he doesn’t, particularly.  He’s been campaigning as if he’s the one with the idea for the new G.I. bill this year – when actually he’s the one who refused to support the new G.I. bill, and wrote one of his own that’s dumb, that will derail what WAS republican support for a bipartisan bill.  He campaigns on veterans issues because he knows voters want a candidate who’s good on veterans’ issues – and he assumes no one will check his rhetoric against his Record.

That’s McCain on veterans.

Now we’re seeing the same thing from McCain on the environment.  Did you see his new ad on environmental issues?

CLIP-McCAIN’S NEW AD ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

RACHEL MADDOW: “Take action and fix it. I believe in it.” That’s john mccain’s new ad on global warming – trying to make it seeem like HE’S NO GEORGE bush!  he knows global warming exists!  the visuals are all of him at the one of his nine home’s that’s in Sedona, to try to make him look outdoorsy.  He gave a speech today in Portland, Oregon… that was supposed to be his big ENVIRONMENT speech.

And the press all reported it like “Oh John McCain!  The environmentalist!”

John McCain’s voting record in Congress on environmental issues?  Let us just put it this way. There are 535 members of Congress, right?  The League of Conservation Voters ranks members of congress according to their voting records on the environment?  Of the 535 members of Congress?  John McCain? Is rank?  535!

He’s not even tied for last.  He’s just last!  Here’s how the Sierra Club summed up his voting record, quote? “McCain is the only member of congress to skip every single crucial environmental vote scored by the league of conservation voters; he posted a sc ore lower than members of congress who were out for much of the year due to serious illnesses - he even posted lower than some who did not survive this congressional term.” John McCain literally scored lower than some dead members of congress. On his voting record on the environment.

But if he runs ads that say he’s an environmentalist – he gets credit for being one… right?  Right?  Right…Sadly.

John McCain

More of the same old Republican lies.

It hurts to say it

but I must officially say, after an hour of you enabling the MSM stupidity of that horrific circle jerk, your own show doesn't have the impact that it used to.

Understand this: Air America did indeed help turn the last election through the memes and truth-squadding done on the Randi, Maddow, Hartman and even Springer shows.

But now with an only minimal schedule of political talk -- Lionel I actually enjoy but he is not actually a progressive -- the power of Air America to be a force in the discussion is diminished, and now you are spending more time politely joining the brainless punditry than fighting it with facts.

You're undermining your own worth every time you act like a polite useful left wing idiot on that show. Don't do this, smart woman. At least appearing with Olbermann didn't harm your own image.

"officially"?

I Totally Agree

If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em. That's exactly what GE has done. They have purchased Rachel Maddow and put her on ice. They have put her on a TV show so hideous that it makes Cris Matthews look like Ed Murrow. The disservice Rachel is doing to her causes and her listeners will soon be irreprable. Exactly what GE wants. So the next time Rachel cashes her check, I hope a small part of her realizes exactly what she is doing: selling her soul.

Does anyone know of any other channel on XM that the Corporate Media does not control? I'm obviously looking for a change.

Well, since you obviously don't think you're going to find...

...purity here, why keep coming back? So you can continue a pretense of moral superiority? Pretty sad, son; pretty sad.

Re: "I'm obviously looking for a change."

How about starting by trolling on another blog?

A radio channel not controlled by corporations?

I have a huge soft spot in my heart for dissidents and loud-mouthed dissent. I spend a great deal of time actively protecting the rights of people whose views and behaviors sometimes irk or positively frighten me. So I'm not going to try to convince doubledave to shut up or leave.

Instead, I am going to suggest to doubledave that:

(1) Mere repetition of a viewpoint doesn't make it true. You've said this four or five times now -- we get it -- we know what you think. Do you have any other thoughts? If not, I'm putting you on permanent iggy. I don't need to hear that idea for a sixth time.

(2) Air America is not a charity. They're trying to make a profit, just like GE and the Washington Post and most of the rest of the media. Even NPR takes corporate money. Haven't you heard the changes in Ira Glass's voice when he has to do a Volkswagen promo on "This American Life?" For Pete's sake, if we follow your gripe to its logical conclusion, Maddow will have to retreat to the lonely backwaters of ham radio and citizen's band radio.

(3) What is wrong with Maddow making money? Ann Richards was once asked whether she had any advice for young women who were starting their careers. Her reply was quick and adamant. Her advice was for those young women to go out and make a huge boatload of money. She said she knew that idea would shock a lot of liberals. She said women, especially, are encouraged to devote their talents and energy to volunteerism. She said that's all well and good, and people probably ought to spend some time ladling out soup at shelters and bringing medicine to the sick. But, she said, if you're rich, you can write out a whole bunch of big fat checks so that the soup kitchen and hospital can pay boatloads of people to do boatloads of good works. I get tired of the idea that liberals can't be liberal if they have money. Hogwash. Self-defeating rubbish. My five- and ten-year budgets contain a line item for charitable giving, and that's the first check I write each month. Like clockwork, my friend.

(4) You are not winning hearts and minds by accusing Maddow of "pimping" and "selling her soul." Maybe you're not trying to change anybody's mind. Maybe you're just venting. If so, please see point 1, above, again.

(5) Maybe blogs are the CB radios of the modern world. You haven't changed my mind. And I doubt Maddow needs you to serve as her conscience. Ten-four, buddy.

Nicely and graciously said, essic

And here I was, thinking you were going to go all Towanda on him.

oh that liberal professoriate

Wanted to post this link, coz I know Rachel has a special place in her heart for CU-Boulder. And so do I, since I teach there and all (hello Rachel!) ...

"Help Wanted: Lefty College Seeks Right-Wing Prof":
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121062988605186401.html

In sum: CU Boulder, in an effort to balance its "leftward tilt" and "champion diversity," is considering adding a position for a Professor of Conservative Thought and Policy.

The absurdity of this gives me brain freeze. So offensive in so many ways. So illogical. Tofu = liberal. Pot-smoking college kids = liberals. Gender studies = radical lefty ideological indoctrination. $9 million to create an endowed chair for a Professor of Conservative Thought = intellectual diversity.

Clearly the WSJ reporter didn't set foot in the state-of-the-art Business School building. Or inspect the postings on the office doors of any business or engineering professors as she was collecting evidence of rampant liberalism on campus.

On the other hand, I do need to revise my syllabi for the fall. In the name of transparency, I think I'll add a line in the Course Objectives:

In this course you will:
-- Learn to write
-- Learn to research
-- Get dunked in a simmering pot of left-wing idealism

Ugh.

Where can I get me...

...a pot o' that there "left-wing idealism"? I need an adjunct for my "evidence-based loaf" and "justice salad".

at college, of course

It's readily available at any university food court. $4.99 for a cup, $6.50 for a bowl, $9 million for a lifetime supply.

Such a deal!

And if I can get my usual "employee-emeritus discount", maybe I can knock that lifetime supply down to a mill-and-a-half.

Re: CU Professor of Conservative Thought and Policy

The best line of the whole article was at the end:

In fact, [CU Boulder Chancellor] Peterson said it's not imperative that the new professor of conservative thought be an actual conservative.

"We hire lots of scholars of the French language," he says, "and they aren't necessarily French."

Things younger than John McCain...

Yup. I'm an ageist; Hillary Clinton expects me to be.

Unexpected consequence of soaring gas prices

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gwuI7HJ5kEsCsmSpgrCqykjFRpyQD90K9EOO0

Mom-and-pop service stations are running into a problem as gasoline marches toward $4 a gallon: Thousands of old-fashioned pumps can't register more than $3.99 on their spinning mechanical dials.

The pumps, throwbacks to a bygone era on the American road, are difficult and expensive to upgrade, and replacing them is often out of the question for station owners who are still just scraping by.

Many of the same pumps can only count up to $99.99 for the total sale, preventing owners of some SUVs, vans, trucks and tractor-trailers to fill their tanks all the way.

As many as 8,500 of the nation's 170,000 service stations have old-style meters that need to be fixed — about 17,000 individual pumps...

Duplicity!

Doesn't this type of duplicity disqualify someone from being the President of the United States? We need honesty in the White House...don't we?!?

How long was I asleep?

M.

Re: "How long was I asleep?"

If you're asking about "duplicity" and "President of the United States", I'd say about 219 years.

Bender please quit

The whole AAR Hillary Clinton Fans, Meadows, Al Geen, David Bender for weeks they gave Hillary some chance

Her chance is over since early February. Hillary is a disastrous candidate. It's just for her image and not for the party.

On black voters Hillary is behind with 60 % compared to Obama. Look the figures form Hillary in Alabma, Georgia, Missouri.
Obama as example has over 1 Mio votes in Pennsylvania compared to John Kerry with over 0.5 Mio 4 years ago.
Kerry won Penn against George W. Bush by around 0.3 Mio.

Poor Susan!

Hexenschuss! (Er... it means a witch shot you, which is perhaps why the Holy Roman Empire burned EXTRA witches.) German doctors treat a Hexenschuss by injecting your back full of painkillers and then telling you to exercise in the hopes that it pops back into place while you can't feel it.

A shot in the back for the shot in the back, a shot of schnapps, and a stack of Asterix comic books...

McCain's environmental record

Rachel! I look to you for enlightenment, but you've confused me here:

Of the 535 members of Congress? John McCain? Is rank? 535!

McCain, like Obama and Clinton, is in the senate and the senate only has 100 members. I don't think they're allowed to vote in the house, and that would explain why he hasn't voted there.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not defending Senator McSame. The League of Conservation Voters has given him a lifetime score of 24% against Clinton's 87% and Obama's 86%. For 2007, they have given him a 0% where Clinton has landed a 73% and Obama a 67%.
http://lcv-ftp.org/LCV/mco.pdf

Sorry for the late comment, but I'm just catching up via podcast.

"Congress"...

...is a term generally used to refer to the combined membership of both houses: 100 Senators PLUS 435 Representatives. So essentially what she is saying is that he has the lowest score of all Senators and Representatives put together.
