Starclucks
Unless I've done it sleepwalking, as far as I know I've never bought a cup of Starbucks coffee. It started off as a matter of convenience, then it was a matter or principle, now I’m just trying to see how long I can go while avoiding it.
Apparently Starbucks puts quotes from famous people on their cups. I know Chuck D had one. The dining services people at Baylor university in texas removed cups with Armistead Maupin’s quote from their Starbucks because Maupin’s gay, and Baylor’s Baptist.
The quote? In case anyone out there from Baylor thinks they can handle it?
“My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short."
Amen.

That would be StarSUCKS
and that amounts to coffee cup discrimination! Silly Baptists. Ostracizing the gay coffee cups. Don't they know that studies indicate approximately 10% of the coffee cup population is gay?

Yes. You?
No
If "yes" is your answer to my medical question to you. No I'm not in the medical profession. I'm a QE in the aerospace field. Make jet engine parts. I was just curious. Wonder if the "Doctor" will respond to your last post to him?
m8h29
Careful now, the "Doctor" didn't reveal his/her gender. ;-) So you work on jet engine parts; me, people parts.
Mea culpa
You're correct. I didn't mean to stereotype the "doctor" role based on gender.
Amen is right.

The Waco Herald-Tribune is
The Waco Herald-Tribune is running a poll (in which one can vote hourly!) on the Starbucks coffee cup controversy. Why not add your vote? Current results:
Are you offended by the Starbucks cup that has a quote about growing up as a homosexual?
Yes. All I want is a cup of coffee, not this stuff.

No. I just drink the coffee. It doesn't bother me.

The coffee doth protest too much, methinks.
People read down there?
And I thought getting tenure was tough
Have we reached the point where we need to post our academic credentials? If so, I will need to update my CV. ;-p
That said, the high-fallutin' intellectual level of this blog is impressive. I guess our leader is to blame!
Anyway, my "qualifications": PhD organic chemist.
God forbid the queer Baylor
God forbid the queer Baylor students could affirm themselves in any nonXian way. If I'd known it'd become rare, I would have kept the one I got at their Groton store. Crap. It's a great quote.

Just a JD
I don't often feel inferior. What a bunch of geeks!
So, speeking of geeks, I just emailed my senators coleman (pig) and Dayton (not so bad) about Roberts and impropriety and the appearance of impropriety from cannon 2 of ABA Code of Judicial Conduct. Please feel free to cut and proper cite Model Code of Judicial Conduct Canon 2
CANON 2: A JUDGE SHALL AVOID IMPROPRIETY AND THE APPEARANCE OF IMPROPRIETY INALL OF THE JUDGE'S ACTIVITIESA. A judge shall respect and comply with the law* and shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.
Commentary:
Public confidence in the judiciary is eroded by irresponsible or improper conduct by judges. A judge must avoid all impropriety and appearance of impropriety. A judge must expect to be the subject of constant public scrutiny. A judge must therefore accept restrictions on the judge's conduct that might be viewed as burdensome by the ordinary citizen and should do so freely and willingly.
The prohibition against behaving with impropriety or the appearance of impropriety applies to both the professional and personal conduct of a judge. Because it is not practicable to list all prohibited acts, the proscription is necessarily cast in general terms that extend to conduct by judges that is harmful although not specifically mentioned in the Code. Actual improprieties under this standard include violations of law, court rules or other specific provisions of this Code. The test for appearance of impropriety is whether the conduct would create in reasonable minds a perception that the judge's ability to carry out judicial responsibilities with integrity, impartiality and competence is impaired. See also Commentary under Section 2C.
B. A judge shall not allow family, social, political or other relationships to influence the judge's judicial conduct or judgment. A judge shall not lend the prestige of judicial office to advance the private interests of the judge or others; nor shall a judge convey or permit others to convey the impression that they are in a special position to influence the judge. A judge shall not testify voluntarily as a character witness.
In my emails I suggested that an example of impropriety would be a district court judge sitting on a case between 3m and a citizen and interviewing for the post of General Counsel with 3m and deciding the case in favor of 3m. Sound like impropriety? What if the case was decided correctly? Appearance of Impropriety. Especially when the judge should simply inform the parties and recuse.
Sickening.
