So why are we babbling about this this morning ??

As we go into this winter tens of thousands of Americans have their lives in danger because of the Rethugs tax cuts and the resulting budget cuts and Rachel babbles on about ancient history. Just getting rid of Bush will be of absolutely no help.. Getting rid of the entire cabal is the only solution. So why is lieing to a bunch of liers ever been a problem for a Rethug ??

Morning Rachel.

Im thinking of conducting a study on neocons.Like Machivellian primate studies,I think the republicans,or the neocons at least are prone to show tendencies reminicent of Bees,or ants.Hive or colony mentallity, serve the queen, queen gets to live fat and have all the sex, every egg must be born to be a worker for the queen, every worker is expendable, save the queen first, when the queen wants to issue commands the commands spread through the colony almost instantaniously do to evolutions in the hive like superchurches, not opposed to slavery or canabalism,go to war and march in mass without question or understanding-only the queens direction and whatever the type and total strength is of the sum total of the hive's individuals. All the drive they need is pheramone(justice sunday and everything they preach, and the drive for money, what a bunch of shmucks) and sugar from the queen and farms.

I would also like to experiment on Rethugs

I think removing their heads and checking for a brain would be an excellent idea.

Several years ago I worked for several weeks

On a job in West Chicago. The motel was right next to a grade crossing on the METRA tracks. That 4 am train got you going in no time.

I am saddened hearing about

the snow blower, because it is not a good thing.

1.  It´s an absolutely non-essential, consumerism status item.  It causes conflict and pollution to produce, it pollutes the air to run (electric or gas), it contributes to noise and stress, it creates another excuse to be more sedentary, before it goes to the eternal garbage mountains.

2.  Somewhere we don´t want to know about, the same money can feed a family for a year.  The same money can pay a kid to "do the walk", way longer than the machine will be useful...

If bush can become pResident, imagine what YOU can become!

Re: snow blower

Very interesting. I've never heard an argument against a snow blower, but what you say makes sense.

Around here (Seattle) they do the same thing with leaves. Its really sad to watch. Folks go out and blow the leaves out of their yard and into their neighbor's yard.  Then the irate neighbor goes out and blows them back into the first person's yard.

Does seem like a big waste of time & money, plus the pollution generated. And those things are loud!

Although, I live on a cul-de-sac, so I get a pretty good view of my neighbors shenanigans - its become a Fall ritual, standing in my living room with a cup of coffee on Saturday mornings, looking out the front window and watching their amusing little competition!

Good morning TRMS devotee's :cheese: I recommend signing onto the letter telling Lieberman that he's become Joe-mental.

Tell Sen. Joe Lieberman:
Debate Is Patriotic

Dear Senator Lieberman,

Recently you said, "It's time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge he'll be commander-in-chief for three more critical years, and that in matters of war we undermine presidential credibility at our nation's peril."

I disagree. The First Amendment enumerates our right "to petition the government for a redress of grievances." If Americans don't challenge a president who is bankrupting our treasury, destroying our moral leadership and jeopardizing our national security then we fail as patriots.

Senator Lieberman: As a member of the "world's greatest deliberative body," it's time you stopped trying to stifle debate and instead become part of the solution by joining the majority of Americans in questioning President Bush's foreign policy.

Respectfully,

Congress Must Insist on a Plan to Get Out of Iraq in 2006

The debate over the war in Iraq is at a tipping point. Members of Congress are examining their position on Iraq right now—trying to gauge whether the polling reported on by the media reflects how constituents in their own districts feel. A strong showing of support for a plan to bring the troops home will send an important message that our representatives need to do their job. It is critical that they hear from all of us. For the next two weeks we’re circulating a petition calling on Congress to insist on an exit strategy to bring the troops home in 2006. Will you sign?

"This is the Brazilian electrician being shot on the subway in

London all over again."

This is a rarity, but I have to respectfully disagree.

I think the Miami shooting by the US Marshals has very little in common with the London shooting if it is true that this unfortunate man in Miami was a bipolar off his medication. If exhibiting hypomanic or manic behavior, bomb or no bomb, he posed an immediate threat to the passengers on that plane and at the very least created an extremely confusing situation to the US Marshals. At no time did the Brazilian electrician appear threatening to those around him or exhibit erratic behavior.

Hypomania is the altered mental state preceding mania. Hypomania could actually appear amusing and comical but for the disturbing disconnnect from reality.  Hypomanics are not typically violent. Hypomania reqiures immediate treatment to prevent it from advancing to a full blown manic episode.

A manic episode is an acutely psychotic state(complete disconnect from reality), a graver psychiatric emergency.  There is nothing amusing about this state.  You would immediately feel unsafe and threatened in the presence of someone acutely manic. It is manifested by continuous hyperactivity, ignitability, irritabliity. hostility often suddenly escalating to assaultive, destructive, even homicidally violent behavior. It is impossible to communicate with these folks because they are completely delusional exhibiting pressured continuous speech with flight of ideas and often times echolalia.  I can see how the Miami man could have appeared as a panicky terrorist possibly packing a bomb.  He may have even repeated the word "bomb" (echolalia).  I can see how reporting what this guy actually said is now vague and confusing.  It is very difficult to follow what these folks are saying.  They make no sense. They do not repond to reasoning.

It would have been nice if, in the few seconds they had to act, these Marshals recognized this for what it was--- a psychiatric emergency not a terrorist threat.  It would have been nice if he had been taken down (and it sounds like he clearly needed to be restained) by nonlethal means.  I'm not ready, though, to double guess the actions of the US Marshals in this case, given that they perceived a presumed immediate bomb threat to the passengers on the plane and the folks in the terminal.  In their minds, they needed to stop this guy's pulse. I need more details, but for now, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

An acutely psychotic man on an airliner is just a bad situation pre/post 911. I shutter to think what the outcome would have been if he had became acutely manic at 25,000 feet. No bomb needed here.

OK, stepping down off the box now----TRMS is awesome!  Looking forward to Rachel 12-3p Tues-Fri on AAR next week and the new double-wide TRMS starting Jan2 7-9a.

CONGRATULATIONS, WELL DONE! :-)

Trigger-happy air marshals do not make you safer.

If being upset is now a good reason to get shot, you'd better just learn to shut up and avoid anyone's notice for the rest of your life, just like they do in other police states.  Keep your head down, and for god's sake don't stand up for anything or anyone, or you could be next.

I can't believe people are stupid enough to buy this crap.  Everyone's already so cowed that they'll accept just about anything as a justification for killing people.  "Shoot first and ask questions later" used to be regarded as outrageous; now it's just the price you pay for "safety".

Well, how the fuck safe to you think you are if the cops can find a "reason" for shooting anyone who might be annoying?

Well done DrG.
Your comments bring a very important perspective to this incident.
Thanks for sharing your expertise. I don't think most people have ever had a close encounter with someone having a hypomanic or manic episode.

Thanks, DrGerm

I agree with citizensteve that you offer a different, medically-informed perspective to this case.  It has made me re-evaluate my opinion of the situation.

Snowblowing:  Could've used one to get out of my driveway this morning in the NYC-area.  Ugh.  And... I've been waiting for Rachel to change "Rachel's Lawnmowing Soundtrack" to her "Snowblowing Soundtrack".  :)

Marshals and Snow Blowers

I'm not sure what I think of the Marshals actions yet.  I suspect the one and only eye wittness to the shooting (other than the Marshals) was the mans wife.  I would love to hear what she has to say.  I'd also like to know why so many shots were fired.  Did they miss at that close of a range or did they think the man needed to be more dead?

As for snow blowers and leaf blowers, I own both.  Being oh so lazy, in the winter I use my leaf blower to blow snow off my car.  After one  more pot of coffee, I will be outside using both.

DrG

Thank you for this explanation!  Like myself, I don't think many people truly understand this disorder.  It's a very sad situation all around.

Mercenaries, The Weekly Planet, and a Dream

I am going to be a sad for two weeks while Air America Mornings is under construction.  I must say Randi Rhodes had that video up about two weeks ago.  Why are we contracting killers?  I guess that it must be fun to go to another country and break all ten of the commandments.

Next the third largest newspaper in the Tampa Bay Area is this little free news paper called the Weekly Planet.  On the cover was Mr. Al Franken and inside they talked about bringing Air America Radio to Tampa's air waves.  God knows we need it here.  Rachel if you see the powers that be tell them to get on the air here.  Of all places you think the start of the I-4 corridor, and therefore the start of the key to winning Florida, would have you on the air.  19th largest radio market you know.

Finally I had a dream that I met Rachel.  I was so excited I just woke up...

Happy Holy Days

Brrrravo (Brrrava?) Avedon!!

My thoughts exactly.  The only thing I agree with DrGerm on is that the marshals probably did EXACTLY what they were trained to do.  However, I would say that training needs to be revisited and modified.

Okay, I have to edit this to add something that's already been said, but I think is being ignored again:  IF this man HAD had a bomb.....at least half the people on that plane would be dead now because of the trigger happy actions of the two air marshals. Period. End of story.

Hamtramck

It's pronounced Ham-tram-ick. It's actually a little city within the city of Detroit. I live in Tampa now but still consider the Detroit area my hometown. I notice in a Detroit Free Press article about this police officer that he has worked in several police departments. Perhaps future employers should look more closely at this guy before considering hiring him.

Hamtramck

Ooops! I just noticed that ConnRon already ably made the correction.

Also just want to mention that am looking forward to Rachel sitting in for Al, as well as her future, expanded show. Kudos!

Hamtramk

Rachel: believe it or not, it's pronounced ham-TRAM-ick.  It's completely surrounded by Detroit, and if you eat that sort of thing (which I used to, but don't any longer), it's a great place to find polish sausage :)

On a much sadder note, regarding the bipolar man who was shot.  A lot of people seem to think that bipolar means alternating states of depression and happiness.  That's not accurate, though it -can- be sometimes.  Much more common is lots of depression and occsasional manic episodes.  Manic episodes are "highs" but not always feeling "good."  More specifically, they're about feeling intensely, whether its anger, happiness, agitation, frustration, etc., but all in a much bigger than life way.

It's not all that common for people with manic episodes to have delusions or hallucinations but it does happen from time to time.

the man inside Rachel made me spill my tea

My favorite thing about this show is Rachel just being herself.
Just thought I'd share.

air marshals

A typically worthwhile exchange of ideas on the blog. DrGerm accurately describes the symptoms of a person with bipolar disorder in an agitated and possibly psychotic state. On first hearing the story, before hearing the diagnosis, my thought was that he was probably bipolar. And, yes, a person this agitated can feel threatening and might inaccurately be perceived as a frightened terrorist. This is especially true if we have been taught to see others as potentially dangerous to the exclusion of other possibilities. The real danger, as Avedon and others have eluded to, is that the lens through which we perceive others is so distorted by the culture of fear that we cannot see other possibilities, like the anguish of his wife or the distracted pain behind the eyes of someone having a psychotic experience. It is the responsibility of police, air marshals and other law enforcement persons to be considering a range of explanations for individual behavior. That is their job and that is how they should be trained. That is an enormous responsibility. It is our job as a society to be aware of the danger of a paranoid stance to difference, to agitation, and to uncertainty.

By the way, Rachel and TRMS staff are awesome. Congratulations on the new schedule.

On mental illness

I just heard that 1 in every 4 people suffer from some form of mental illness. After paying close attention to the last 3 people I had contact with, I believe them all to be sane.

Just out of curiosity, is there some reason that marshals don't carry tasers?  I'm not overly fond of the things, but on a passenger jet I would much rather find marshals with tasers than with guns.

Double Insult to be registered?

It´s appalling to see people attempt to gain their inalienable rights by "legalizing" insults and more euphemisms for reality.  Regardless of my sexuality or gender, I consider d_ke just another mean-spirited, 4-letter word and I am offended as a PERSON.

Add to that the euphemism=lie, of "bike" and you have the mental picture of violent females riding on brain-exploding, noise machines THAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO PERCEIVE AS "FREEDOM".  My arse.....  I am offended as a BICYCLIST.

But then, if it were called something like "homosexual females on motorcycles", it would not be catchy enough for the lowest mediocracy-media, would it?  It´s convoluted enough to get a John Rendon prize.

How low do we want to go? to undo the lows from the low?

If bush can become pResident, imagine what YOU can become!

Dykes etc.

I'm not always offended with the word Dyke.  I call myself a dyke at times.  I'm only offended when it's said in hate. The fact "they" got the trademark didn't make me happy as I am from Wisconsin and was looking forward to the line of clothes.  Had the clothing line been leather and chains, chances are I would't buy anything.

A few years ago at Pridefest I bought a hoodie that read "I'm Out" and another that read "I know that you know".  If I remember correctly those came from a tent with a sign that read "Queer Gear".  I didn't find that offensive either.

There are "un-official" goups of girls here that ride bikes and refer to themselves as Dykes on Bikes. Most are butch but far from the sterotype Dyke and some are Femm.  Most ride 450's. Kawasaki's of all sizes seem to be the bike of choice.

I do love to point when being called a Fag that the person should sign-up for Queer Slang 101.

Re: Dykes on Bikes ... IMO ...

I am not appalled at all. I say "Good for them!" This is a group that has taken a negative connotation of the word 'dyke' and spun it in a positive way, meant to sway public opinion, for acceptance and affirmation of the word 'dyke'.

" 'Dyke' has been claimed by lesbians as a term of pride and empowerment, as a sign of the refusal to be shamed or stigmatized by lesbian sexuality and social identity and as a symbol of unity within lesbian communities past, present and future," Dever wrote in her declaration.

The context of the word 'dyke' has evolved, just like many other words. It can be used both positively and negatively, just like the words 'black' or 'white'. As a dyke who's owned two 'bikes' in her life, the phrase 'dykes on bikes' doesn't offend me at all. I use the word 'dyke' way more often than the word 'lesbian' when I talk about my own sexuality. The word bike means bicycle, motorcycle or motorbike. Although personally, I never use the word 'bike' when referring to motorcycles, even though the 'bikes' I owned were trailbikes.

Dyke

I'm not offended by the term "dyke" either. But it would probably depend on who was saying it. Also, I think its perfectly OK for minority groups to take ownership of words being used as insults and turn them into something positive.

One of my favorite shirts includes the word "dyke".This of course gives me the excuse of showing off one of my favorite photos (me and my girlfriend with Rachel at last year's Seattle Pride event.)

Legislator derides 'holiday tree' in Washington state Capitol

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A state legislator is unhappy that some seasonal greenery in Olympia has been designated the "Capitol Holiday Kids' Tree."

Gov. Christine Gregoire should declare the 30-foot noble fir in the Legislative Building a Christmas tree and post "Merry Christmas" signs nearby, Rep. John Ahern, R-Spokane, said Wednesday on talk radio, urging listeners to call the governor's office. ...

... The tree is named by the Association of Washington Business, which organizes an annual tree-lighting and gift drive for needy youngsters.

"It's the state's unofficial Christmas tree," association president Donald C. Brunell said. "It was not set up to be a poster child for talk radio." ...

The current designation dates from about 1990, when some lawmakers objected to calling it a Christmas tree, "so we said OK, to be inclusive for everybody, we'll call it the Capitol Holiday Kids' Tree," Brunell said. "Until this year, the tree's name seemed to have hit a happy equilibrium."

Gregoire is not about to rename the tree, "but the governor wanted me to point out that she has a Christmas tree in her office and in her home," spokeswoman Althea Cawley-Murphree said.

Sore spot with the Cap'n

It happens every year, and it really puts my dander on the fast upwards track.

Somehow, when faced with the obvious--that Christmas, despite it's "secular" trappings, remains at its foundation a Christian holiday (look at the name, dammit)--a certain breed of halfwit, drawn from all positions along the political spectrum, will try to shoehorn other faith-based holidays into the mix, and then claim to be "inclusive".

Problem:  if one were to combine all the members of non-Christian religions in the US, they would still not equal half of those whom make NO claim to adherence to any mythos, organized or otherwise.

How is this "inclusive"?

If one wants to go around gibbering "Merry Christmas", or "Joyous Kwaanza" or "Happy Sacagewa Day" (hat-tip to Kent), then go ahead on.  But don't be surprised if one out of fifteen people (at least) you greet thusly may seem less than enthusiastic.

And don't tell me it's an "inclusive" practice.  'Cause I don't buy into superstition.

re: Sore spot with the Cap'n

Hey Cap,

I truly understand your pique. It helps me to think of "Christmas" as a hijacked pagan celebration of winter solstice - which most of its customs come from anyway: tree (nature worship), mistletoe, yule log, etc.

My favorite way to ring in the New Year at midnight is by inviting a bunch of friends over, tapping the keg, burning the christmas tree in the back yard and dancing around it. (Which of course isn't Christian or Pagan, but a truly American Trailer Trash tradition).

Air Marshals

If you put a guy on a plane and tell him he's there to look for terrorists carrying bombs in backpacks, it's just a matter of time until the guy swears the dead crazyman with the backpack said "bomb".

Bravo!!! Avedon, Koy, barbhamp, NJSharon

You have made the important points and I just connect them.  While I respect DrGerm´s technical information, it is not a qualification we should expect of air marshalls.

What we should expect from those who implement policies is (what I never forget from an old management course)  DELEGATION = RESPONSIBILITY + AUTHORITY, IN BALANCED AMOUNTS.

It seems we delegate "authority" over life-and-death, to persons with no rational responsibility, nor discriminatory-thinking capacity (barbhamp!, NJSharon).  Only the motor skills to react violently.

If bush can become pResident, imagine what YOU can become!

Is this for real?

“I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”

“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”

Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

I’ve talked to three people present for the meeting that day and they all confirm that the President of the United States called the Constitution “a goddamned piece of paper.” (Capitol Hill Blue)

And they still manage to keep a straight face when they say they are going to teach our leaders democracy...

Baseball Trades ... Looking good for the Braves!

The Braves bullpen is looking mighty good next year with the addition of Lance Cormier, Oscar Villarreal and Wes Obermueller.

DrGerm, even though we stole your BoTox SS, got $11 million, and signed ex-Philly Todd Pratt, the good news is you and chemgirl can arm-wrestle over who gets The (fizzled-out bottle) Rocket! And NJSharon, you can have Grandpa Julio!

punkski, since you actually got to meet Rachel, I'd say you most certainly are a Lucky Dyke.

Re: Hot stove baseball

m8, I have been waiting for an opportune moment to chat about baseball ... but your Braves keep making moves!  Glad to hear you are happy with your revamped bullpen.  I've never heard of these guys.  I don't think Renteria (or as my sister calls him, Gonorrhea) is an upgrade over Furcal.  The Sox fans practically ran him out of Boston.  I think the Braves should've traded for Julio Lugo from Tampa Bay or signed free agent Alex Gonzalez (Fla) -- my bet is that the Sox will get one of these guys to fill their SS hole now.

Rumors swirling about Nomar being shopped as a "utility" guy.  Of course, the Yanks STILL don't have a CF.  I don't want Johnny Damon for 7 years - Boras is off his rocker on that one.  But I don't want Nomar (aka Mr. Disabled List) at all, even if he could play CF.  Also, it's rumored that the Yanks will "secure" their bullpen by re-signing Al Leiter (ugh, Mr. Republican positioning himself to run for NYC mayor) and Ramiro Mendoza (his best years were 1996-98).  And, anyone but the Yankees, please sign Roger Clemens.  :shut:

The Mets keep making outstanding moves.  I like the LoDuca signing as much as the Wagner signing.  They need a 2B now -- Grudzielanek rumored there.  Can't figure out why in hell they signed Julio (I'm listed as 47 y.o. but I'm really 147, hell I'm actually Satchel Paige) Franco.  I see Carlos Baerga is still available, too.

What the heck are the Dodgers doing?  I don't get that team.  And now with Grady Little in charge?  Well, I guess it's o.k. because Pedro's not a Dodger anymore...  ;-)

Other notable (i.e., laughable) unsigned free agents as of today:  Kevin (Karate Kid) Brown, Felix Herrendous (er, Heredia), Byun-Hyun (I almost helped the Yanks win the 2001 WS all by myself) Kim, Rafael (finger-wagging, syringe-toting) Palmeiro, and Ugueth (I'm happy to sign with you, but I may need to pitch from my prison cell) Urbina.

I love talking baseball, and could go on and on, but I really need to get back to work.  Thanks for bringing up the topic and helping me procrastinate!

Play ball ...

I like Furcal (an amazing player with a drinking problem ... 2 DUIs in less than 5 years), but he's like most players (Who can blame them?) and chased the money, which is why I admire Chipper for unselfishly giving up big bucks to stay with Braves through at least the end of 2008 season. I'm looking at the Renteria deal as the Braves got an All-Star SS, but we had to give something (Marte who has unlimited potential) to get something. I'm going to be optimistic and look at the Renteria trade through rose colored glasses:

http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article_perspectives.jsp?ymd=20051208&content_id=1279309&vkey=perspectives&fext=.jsp

"Over the course of his career, Renteria has been a steadier fielder than Furcal. He will not steal as many bases as Furcal, but he is a .288 lifetime hitter, with extra-base pop clearly indicated by 300 career doubles."

"All these issues taken together, if you can assume Renteria will regain his pre-2005 form in the field, not only have the Braves replaced Furcal, but they also have managed an upgrade."

"General manager John Schuerholz said Thursday that the Braves believed that Renteria was the best shortstop available in the current market."

The Braves really needed some fresh blood in the pen. Obermueller's nothing special, but at least we got rid of Dan freakin' worthless Kolb. Villarreal has a career ERA of 3.47 and an ok W-L record (12-9). I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do for the Braves. Cormier's stats aren't impressive, but hopefully he'll improve. Unless Schuerholz can find a closer, I guess we're stuck with Reitsma now. Wish the Braves had the money to get Kevin Millwood back.

It's gonna be an interesting season next year with all these swaps. You don't like Damon?

Speaking of 'offending' people ...

Here is the more common use (similar to the original but not really the same)

When the Braves come back to where they belong, Milwaukee, then and only then will I talk baseball non stop.

pbNj

Unfortunately, I think you're stuck with the Brewers and their sausage races.

Brewers

Even when the Brewers gave away free tickets they couldn't come close to filling the stadium.  We really need to Braves to come home.

Braves history

Actually the Braves started out in Beantown before they moved to Beertown, and finally hit the bigtime when they relocated to Bubbatown.

Racing sausages - I don't normally do this, but I this time I have to.

Thanks for the ESPN heads-up. You'd better get back to work, chemgirl.

Dyke Debate

Wow, it was fun reading all the dyke debate posts this morning!  A nice break after reading the Saturday morning newspaper headlines.  I love how progressives and liberals aren't afraid to disagree with one another.

The Dykes on Bikes portion of the gay pride parades here in CA (LA and SF) is an amazing experience.  Watching hundreds of women on motorcycles zoom by - butch, femme, leather, vanilla, topless, and everything in between - is very cool, and actually quite moving.  I live in a small community, with a mostly covert gay population, and no gay bars/clubs/etc, so those huge big-city pride fest events are very exciting.  :wow:

Punkski - great photo!  I'm very jealous.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

re: Dyke Debate

Hey, Femmev ... who you callin' a dyke!?! ;-) (Ok I'm done with the smileys now.)

chemgirl: Jinx! And get back to work!

Racing sausages

You are laughing at our racing sausages ?  That's ALL we have for god's sake.

I'm sure that while in Beantown, all they Braves could think about was a move to Beertown so how could their true home be anyplace other than Milwaukee?

I hate it for ya, pbNj, but

the dwindling fan support that caused the Braves to move from Boston also caused them to move from Milwaukee to Atlanta. They were in Boston for 82 years, and next year will the 40th anniversary of the Atlanta Braves. They only camped out in Milwaukee for 13 years. I think that pretty much answers your question.

And yep, I'm still grinning about your cute little racing sausages. It's not all you have ... you still got the Brewers, the Bucs and the beer!

As I said...

<<It's not all you have ... you still got the Brewers, the Bucs and the beer!>>

As I said, all we have are the racing sausages.

Braves franchise history

The move from Boston to Milwaukee between the 1952 and 1953 seasons was the first such move for a major league team since 1903 (when the original Balto. Orioles moved to NY to become the Highlanders - later the Yankees) and was due to declining attendance in Boston, as well as an attempt by the Braves' ownership to block the St. Louis Browns franchise owned by wacky Bill Veeck from moving there.  The Braves had a AAA affiliate in Milwaukee and claimed territorial rights on Beertown.  To prevent the Browns from moving there, and to escape the red ink in Boston, the Braves up and left.

http://www.baseball-fever.com/archive/index.php/t-26261.html

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teams/brav.shtml

Ironically, the reason for the Milwaukee-to-Atlanta move in 1966 was - yup, you guessed it - declining attendance.

m8, you must be reading my mind with your post!

Bush administration seeks to avoid Supreme Court showdown
By Frank Davies

Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Friday tried to convince a federal appeals court that the Supreme Court shouldn't review the government's decision to imprison a U.S. citizen as an enemy combatant in the war on terrorism for more than three years without charging him with a crime.

In a dramatic change of course, the administration argued that the appellate court ruling that had allowed the government to jail Jose Padilla indefinitely was now moot because he's now been charged.

The Justice Department claimed that Padilla is a terrorist who wanted to explode a radioactive bomb and blow up apartment buildings in the United States. Last month, however, the Justice Department charged Padilla only with lesser crimes, prompting judges on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., to demand an explanation for the shift.

The administration's action on Friday is intended to avert a Supreme Court showdown over its claim that the government can hold suspected terrorists indefinitely, without charges, by designating them enemy combatants. The administration has used that designation to imprison Padilla and hundreds of other suspected terrorists captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

In its filing to the appeals court, the Justice Department said: "Narrowing the charges would avoid sensitive evidentiary issues that may implicate core national security concerns and constitutional issues."

Some of the evidence that Padilla wanted to mount a "dirty bomb" attack was obtained from other suspected al-Qaida terrorists who've been held in CIA, military or foreign prisons and may have been subjected to cruel or inhumane treatment that U.S. officials may not want to discuss in open court. More serious sports stuff

Right!  Whenever I see Bush, I think, "This guy can't seriously be our president?"

I like Damon, but not for 7 years.  Weak arm, too.  After the last 5 years of having a CF who couldn't throw the ball back to the infield on the fly, I'd - ideally - like to get a guy who can at least make baserunners slow down a bit.

From baseball to women's hoops...

The Rene Portland-anti-lesbian bias suit will be featured on ESPN's Outside the Lines this Sun. at 9:30am, for those interested.  For the most recent national article I've seen on the topic, see:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/columns/story?columnist=voepel_mechelle&id...

Re: ESPN's Outside the Lines

chemgirl, glad I watched the show. It was pretty despicable to see the after-effects that Coach Homophobe left on Cindy Davies. Her story really puts the damage (both emotional and possible lost financial) that Portland's hate and discrimination have caused into perspective.

I wonder just how many potential "Sheryl Swoopes" there could've been, that aren't, because of people like Portland? How many dreams and lives have been crushed?

Re: Outside the Lines, Rene Portland

Glad you watched the show, m8.  I, too, saw it.  Made me despise Portland all the more.  I am convinced that the woman is evil -- and I don't throw those words around lightly.  Did you read Mechelle Voepel's article on espn.com?  (It's the one I posted yesterday.)  It gave the best summary of the situation at Penn State thus far.  For those who missed it, here's the link again:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/columns/story?columnist=voepel_mechelle&id...

Also, for those who missed Outside the Lines this morning and want to see it, set your DVR/VCR/TiVO:  it'll be rebroadcast on ESPN2 at 3:30am tomorrow (very early Mon. morning).

chemgirl

I read the ESPN article. The 4 choice summary at the end says it all. Here's another chemical contaminant article you might be interested in, this time about flame retardants.

http://www.insidebayarea.com/oaklandtribune/localnews/ci_3299744

re: contaminants

Hey m8,

That is a really creepy article. There are so many chemicals in people now, we have no idea the harm they are causing - if any.

Of course, this kind of thing has been happening for years. Hence the lead/Beethovin article on the previous blog entry. Although, it might not have been the lead flavored wine that killed him, but pollution...

Staff Opinions Banned In Voting Rights Cases
Criticism of Justice Dept.'s Rights Division Grows

By Dan EggenWashington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, December 10, 2005; Page A03

The Justice Department has barred staff attorneys from offering recommendations in major Voting Rights Act cases, marking a significant change in the procedures meant to insulate such decisions from politics, congressional aides and current and former employees familiar with the issue said.

Disclosure of the change comes amid growing public criticism of Justice Department decisions to approve Republican-engineered plans in Texas and Georgia that were found to hurt minority voters by career staff attorneys who analyzed the plans. Political appointees overruled staff findings in both cases.

The policy was implemented in the Georgia case, said a Justice employee who, like others interviewed, spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of retaliation. A staff memo urged rejecting the state's plan to require photo identification at the polls because it would harm black voters. ... (more)

Weaselly Rice tortures facts
Does secretary of state think anyone is buying her spiel, asks Maureen Dowd
Dec. 11, 2005. 01:00 AM

Our secretary of state's tortuous defence of supposedly non-existent CIA torture chambers in Eastern Europe was an acid flashback to Clintonian parsing. Just as Bill Clinton pranced around questions about marijuana use at Oxford during the '92 campaign by saying he had never broken the laws of his country, so Condoleezza Rice pranced around questions about outsourcing torture by suggesting that President George W. Bush had never broken the laws of his country. But in Bill's case, he was only talking about smoking a little joint, while Condi is talking about snatching people off the street and throwing them into lethal joints. "The United States government does not authorize or condone torture of detainees," she said. It all depends on what you mean by "authorize,'' "condone,'' ``torture" and "detainees.'' ... Wikipedia needs safeguards that work
By Mike Langberg

Mercury News

Jimmy Wales has often described himself as the constitutional monarch of Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia written and edited by volunteers.

Queen Elizabeth II of England and other constitutional monarchs can only intervene in affairs of state on rare occasions of great crisis.

Wales, who co-founded the non-profit Wikipedia in 2001, exercised his royal power last week. But he only took a tiny step in the midst of a crisis where bolder leadership is required.

Wikipedia keeps getting in trouble because its open model -- where anyone can write and edit entries -- is an invitation for character assassination, ideological crusades and outright vandalism, as well as legitimate scholarship. The latest flap involves retired newspaper editor and civil-rights crusader John Seigenthaler Sr., the subject of an anonymously written defamatory entry that lived on Wikipedia for six months earlier this year. ... I do like the idea of an open source encyclopedia... But it does need fact checkers.

Frist Says He's Ready to Block Filibuster  (AP)

WASHINGTON - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Sunday he is prepared to strip Democrats of their to ability to filibuster if they try to stall Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court.

"The answer is yes," Frist said when asked if he would act to change Senate procedures to restrict a Democratic filibuster. "Supreme Court justice nominees deserve an up-or-down vote, and it would be absolutely wrong to deny him that." ... (more)

Right Act hr 3700 in Congress sensenbrennar deport anchor babys

But, from an economic standpoint, instantly acquiring more people is not so obviously useful. A country's living standard is expressed by its output per capita, not just its sheer output. The economies of Britain and China had about the same output in the early nineteenth century. But Britannia could afford to rule the waves while China was starving because the British output was fifteen times higher per capita than the Chinese.

Immigrants and their descendants will make up about two-thirds of U.S. population growth during the 1990s. Thereafter, they will supply virtually all population growth.

Just acquiring more people is not enough. In an increasingly technical age, what will count is not the quantity of people but their quality--and the quality of their ideas.

This insight casts a stark new light on much American immigration history. For example, Professor Richard A. Easterlin, writing in the Harvard Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups, has argued that the vast immigration into the United States in the nineteenth century "probably did not alter substantially the growth of output per capita."

The innovations that drove American economic growth such as mass production in manufacturing, Easterlin points out, were already celebrated worldwide by 1850 when mass immigration was only just getting under way. In the next hundred years, both France and Germany outstripped the United States in per capita output growth.

"Immigrants built America," immigration enthusiasts always claim. Well, not quite, as it turns out. The colonial stock Americans had things rolling along pretty well before mass immigration began. The immigrants just climbed on the bandwagon.

And what about the present situation--with large numbers of immigrants arriving who are far more unskilled relative to the host population? Even if they enter the workforce smoothly and cause total output to grow, their greater numbers must cause output per head to fall. And if their marketable skills are minimal, and their entry is not smooth but causes social stress, it's possible that even total output may not grow much more than it would have done anyway. Even, perhaps, less.

This is the specter haunting the United States in 2050--that the American population may be 30 percent larger than it would have been without immigration; but its native stock no richer and its overall national income little greater than would have been achieved anyway.

The sword of Damocles over the immigration enthusiasts' polemics is this: the extraordinary economic success of Japan since World War II. Despite its population of only 125 million and virtually no immigration at all, Japan has grown into the second-largest economy on earth. Its GDP has gone up nearly ten times since 1955 and is now about perhaps half that of the United States', which has barely tripled in the same period.

I suggest Americans think about immigration this way: In the presidential debate of 1980, Ronald Reagan flourished this set of questions at the audience to remind them of the foreign and domestic record of Jimmy Carter:

Are you better off than you were four years ago? Is it easier for you to go and buy things in the stores than it was four years ago? Is there more or less unemployment in the country than there was four years ago? Is America as respected throughout the world as it was? Do you think that our security is as safe, that we're as strong as we were four years ago? . . . If you don't think that this course that we've been on for the last four years is what you would like to see us follow for the next four, then I could suggest another choice that you have.

If the 1965 act had done what its supporters said it would do, immigration would have been held to (say) 350,000 a year. The U.S. population in 1990 would have been 239 million instead of 250 million. According to the 1965 bill's advocates, the U.S. ethnic balance would not have been altered at all. That means that the American population would still be what it was in 1960: almost 89 percent white (including maybe 1 percent or so Hispanic white, which the 1960 census did not break out).

In the end, Americans have to ask themselves very specific questions about the immigration flood unleashed upon their country by the politicians in 1965: Has the mass immigration triggered by the 1965 reform made me and my family better off? Has it made it easier or harder for us to work, to educate our children, to live our lives? Has it resulted in more or less congestion? pollution? racial tension? crime? Do I feel it has made America respected for its generosity--or despised for its gullibility? Are we stronger because immigration brought diversity? Or weaker because it brought divisiveness? Has the post-1965 immigration enabled us to achieve anything that we could not have managed on our own?

What if the 1965 act had worked as promised and there were fewer immigrants? Or if immigration had been stopped completely in 1965?

Would America be a happier or unhappier place than it is today?

Well?

And after immigrants arrive in the United States, they have children. So the true impact of immigration is the proportion of immigrants and their descendants in the American population. The demographer Leon Bouvier projects that immigrants and their descendants will make up about two-thirds of U.S. population growth during the 1990s. Thereafter, they will supply virtually all population growth.

By 2050, the Census Bureau estimates that the U.S. population will have reached 391 million. By Bouvier's count, at that point more than a third (36 percent) of the U.S. population will be post-1970 immigrants and their descendants--a staggering 139 million people.

By 2050, the Census Bureau projects, whites will constitute only 52.7 percent of the U.S. population. Hispanics will constitute 21.1 percent, blacks, 15.0 percent, Asians, 10.1 percent, and "other" 1.1 percent. But in 1960, whites were nearly 90 percent of the population. Blacks made up virtually all the balance--Asians and Hispanics were mere trace elements.
