Iraq Shia alliance to vote on PM
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4928822.stm Iraq's largest parliamentary bloc, the United Iraq Alliance (UIA), is to vote on a candidate for prime minister. The Shia Muslim coalition's vote could see Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari retain power or introduce a new leader. Mr Jaafari, who has refused repeated demands to stand down, has indicated he will stand by the UIA's decision. It is hoped that the vote will break months of damaging political deadlock in Iraq, which has been taking place amid continuing sectarian violence.
At least they are trying to work it out, on their own.

a third of americans are males who won't ask for directions or eat anything but meat and potatoes because they are afraid of change and afraid to admit they're lost. you know the type. bush is one of them and he resonates with people who believe that if you don't admit you are wrong, you aren't wrong. As children, they spent a lot of time with their fingers in their ears, their eyes squeezed tight, yelling "NANANANA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Didn't bother to learn in class because it was easier to cheat off the test of the person in the desk beside them.
Low Approval
I can only hope and wish for the best that America will wake up and take back control of this great nation.
The Rethug collateral damage is mounting in leaps and bounds. Not only have our children's brave souls been sacrificed for the all-mighty dollar, our land and National Parks are being given away to cover part of our WAR DEBT.

I have compacts in almost all my fixtures - except the 1's they can't fit into.(The bases of the fluor. bulbs are 'fatter' than incandescents'.)
I love 'em - they last waayyy longer than the incandescents & put out a LOT less heat too.
I even have some in my fridge.
1 phenomenom I've noticed is that they take a little while to 'warm up' - that is, they don't achieve full brightness right away, but take a minute or so.

Oregon man survives 12 nails to the head
April 21, 2006 4:22 PM The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. Doctors say a-dozen nails in the head caused no serious lasting effects for an Oregon man.
A report in the current issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery says the man was suicidal and high on methamphetamine when he used a nail gun to fire the nails into his head one by one last year. A day later, he showed up at a hospital complaining of a headache.
Surgeons pulled the nails with needle-nosed pliers and a drill. The patient was later transferred to psychiatric care and stayed under court order for nearly a month before leaving against doctors' orders.
In his report, the neurosurgeon who oversaw the patient's treatment says no one is known to have survived firing so many foreign objects into the head.

Beware June 2, 2006...
Hi Gang,
As most of you know, George W. Bush is planning to bomb Nevada on June 2, 2006 in preparation for a "nukuelar" attack on Iran. This is madness. We need to have our voices heard in all ways possible DAILY against this.
I have created three new sections in my online t-shirt/bumper sticker/etc. shop, Koy's Cogitations, (link below in my sig) in response to a call by Randi Rhodes to wear peace/anti-war designs. Two of the sections honor peace-moms and peace-dads everywhere and the third section contains the simple message "TEAM PEACE" in rainbow and other colors.
Also, a woman I used to work with has created a new web site, "Armbands for Peace". Here is the email I received from her about this new movement (link included):
----------------
::Welcome to the Resistance::
On April 17, 2006 Randi Rhodes (syndicated Liberal talk show host) made
the suggestion that we need to start a wearing armbands to show our
resistance the dangerous warmongering Bush administration. We are all
terrified he's about to start a nuclear war with Iran. It's past time to
protest daily. So a few of her listeners got together and we decided to
start the Armbands for Peace movement. A silent daily protest by wearing
a simple black armband that says "NO WAR" on your arm. Wear it to work,
to school, to the store, everywhere. Spread the word about the armbands.
There are more of us than them, so let's get this going. NO WAR!! No
more death. We hooked up with an embroidery house and have ordered these
fabric armbands that are stitched in white thread. They are available on
our website for $5.00 (proceeds will benefit Goldstar Families for Peace
& Paralyzed Veterans of America) or if you don't want to buy one of
these make your own - get creative, but wear it EVERY SINGLE DAY! We
need thousands of people wearing these everyday. Until we start seeing
them all over the country! A simple statement of free speech - use it or
lose it! Please help us spread the word!!
ARMBANDS FOR PEACE
http://armbandsforpeace.blogspot.com
-----------------------
Don't think for a minute people don't notice these things. For example, I was running errands one day just before Easter and everywhere I went, people wished me a "Happy Easter". It was actually starting to bother me quite a bit. I mean, just cuz I'm a white woman in a red state doesn't automatically mean I celebrate Easter, right? Just when I was about to ask the 100th greeter what makes them think I celebrate Easter, when I realized I was wearing the garnet cross my little boy gave me for Valentine's Day this year. In short, people notice little statements!
I was picking up some medication for my cat yesterday and I mentioned "I'd also like some sedatives for myself please" and went on to explain about Bush's plans for June 2 and Iran. She didn't know anything about it! Spread the word! Don't be shy.
Please pass along this information to fellow like-mindeds. Thanks and Peace All.

It may cost the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, more than that to clean it up.
Meg McCormick says it sounded like an elephant belching, and looked like they'd struck a small oil well.
There was a grease clog in a sewer line near her house, and workers used a high-pressure hose to blast it open. It blew all the black gook back into McCormick's house, creating a geyser of sewage spraying from her toilet bowl.
The eruption lasted 55 minutes, leaving four inches of sludge in the house.

John Dean and James David Barber
Oh joy. John Dean has applied Barber's famous model on presidential character to the current occupant of the White House.
http://writ.lp.findlaw.com/dean/20060421.html
Folks, Barber is the guy who, at the height of Nixon's popularity and power, predicted that there were only two possible outcomes to Nixon's second term: impeachment or resignation. Duke wouldn't print Barber's book, so UNC did. If I am remembering this right, this landed several poli sci PhDs at UNC on Nixon's enemies list. But Barber was right about Nixon, for all the right reasons. The only other political writer who was speaking critically (and, in hindsight, accurately -- at least as accurately as possible within the bounds of hyperbolic gonzo journalism) about Nixon at that time was Hunter S. Thompson.
Should be interesting to see if Barber is as right about this president.
re: Barber
Barber died a few years ago. It would be really interesting to live long enough to see how many future presidents fit his pattern analysis. I personally believe Bush is a active/negative but I also believe it takes at least 20 years post presidency before you can begin accurately judge any presidents long term impact on history.
re: Barber
>>Barber died a few years ago.
Hhhmm...I should have said "Barber as applied by others."
>>I also believe it takes at least 20 years post presidency before you can begin accurately judge any presidents long term impact on history.
Normally you're right. Time has given us tremendous insight into the prior presidencies.
But now? Except for historical purposes, we don't need 20 years to assess George the Younger. His impact to date is pretty obvious. Environment? Ruinous impact. Foreign relations? Ruinous impact. America's image and influence abroad? Oy. Alleviation of poverty/building the middle class? Ruinous. The nation's economics (trade deficit, budget deficit, uncontrolled borrowing for short-term goals that do not contribute to the common weal, etc. ad nauseum)? Ruinous. Human, civil, and constitutional rights? Disaster. Voting rights? Yikes. Integrity of public servants and public service? What's that? Does anybody even remember the rhetoric of Roosevelt, Kennedy, and their ilk? I guess I'm just a dumb rube, but I still believe that America is great and that we can do anything. We can be the first to the moon, we can build great dams, educate our populace, and build national parks and highway systems. Public service is an honor and, used correctly, can change the nation and the world for the better.
But back to Bush's reign -- just sit back and rate this administration on: transparency in government, corporatization of government, energy policy, disappearance of the middle class, failure of antitrust enforcement, independence of the judiciary, separation of church and state, fair wages, sustainable growth, manipulation and disparagement of science -- I don't need to go on, do I? Because I could.
My friends are so disheartened by all of this that they're nearly numb. And they're actually wondering aloud whether progressives WANT to win the next election, because we'll be stuck with cleaning up these problems. And boy is it gonna take a lot of time and hard, smart work
But you know what? I'd LOVE to dig into this stuff. Nobody thought Clinton could straighten out the budgetary mess left from the Reagan-and-Elder-Bush years, either, but he surprised them all. It's fixable, folks. Very fixable.
There are plenty of smart Americans who can fix it. Get ready for some hard, smart work. Get busy -- join and support groups that are thinking ahead on the real fixes for these huge problems. We don't need to wait until after the elections to plan the cures for all these ills.
re: Barber
I was commenting on a president’s long term impact on history. I predict GW will be numeral uno as creating the biggest mess. I don't think there is anyway we can know now how many years it will take and how many wars will "need" to be fought to undo all the problems caused by Bush's foreign policy. His overall rank will end up at the bottom with the likes of A. Johnson, Pierce and Buchanan.

Yeah, you and I aren't arguing. We agree. But I have had so many conversations lately with so many people who are fearful about how deep and wide the mess is. And these are people whom I admire and whom I regard as effective and smart. I'm not used to seeing them so (alternately) angry, sad, despairing, disgusted, freaked out, and shut out. I think I was more replaying my conversations with them than responding to what you said.
Lately I have had this sense of energy and deep-rooted optimism. I've been thinking about how many "unsolvable" problems this country has solved, especially when scientists have had a hand in the solutions. I would dearly love to be part of the cleanup that's to come and am giving serious thought to how and where to pitch in. I think I'm tired of grieving about what the neo-cons have done to my country. I'm ready to get busy rebuilding. I think I need to start making phone calls.
Yep, I've had many thoughts of Barber

Lawyer: Rice Allegedly Leaked Defense Info
By MATTHEW BARAKAT The Associated Press
Saturday, April 22, 2006; 12:59 AM
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice leaked national defense information to a pro-Israel lobbyist in the same manner that landed a lower-level Pentagon official a 12-year prison sentence, the lobbyist's lawyer said Friday.
Prosecutors disputed the claim.
The allegations against Rice came as a federal judge granted a defense request to issue subpoenas sought by the defense for Rice and three other government officials in the trial of Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman. The two are former lobbyists with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee who are charged with receiving and disclosing national defense information.
Defense lawyers are asking a judge to dismiss the charges because, among other things, they believe it seeks to criminalize the type of backchannel exchanges between government officials, lobbyists and the press that are part and parcel of how Washington works.
During Friday's hearing, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III said he is considering dismissing the government's entire case because the law used to prosecute Rosen and Weissman may be unconstitutionally vague and broad and infringe on freedom of speech.
Rosen's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said the testimony of Rice and others is needed to show that some of the top officials in U.S. government approved of disclosing sensitive information to the defendants and that the leaks may have been authorized.
Prosecutors opposed the effort to depose Rice and the other officials. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin DiGregory also disputed Lowell's claim, saying, "She never gave national defense information to Mr. Rosen."
The issuance of subpoenas does not automatically require Rice or anybody else to testify or give a deposition. A recipient can seek to quash the subpoena.
Calls to the State Department seeking comment Friday evening were not immediately returned....**

Maybe after the mid terms I'll change my mind but right now I really don't see the democratic party as really having a platform and/or a clear plan to clean up the mess. I'm not sure if that's due to lack of leadership, bad leadership or just too afraid to take a stand....any stand.

All the Democrats need to do is to have an Ecology Platform
Democrats, Nay all Non-Republicans, need only to have an Ecology Platform to win the next Election.
Forget about the republican name calling, forget about insulting Bush Buddy or his Cronies, the republicans appear to be taking that stand, in full throttle. I say let them finally take the blame and responsibility for the Bush Buddy Administration.
One thing you can say about Americans is, when things are finally obvious they catch on. Once the cart is rolling, the bystanders all jump on, sometimes to add momentum, sometimes for the free ride, but they do join in.
So while the republicans are self-destructing, I say let them, enjoy the show, don't forget to buy your popcorn.
And while we are sitting back, lets concern ourselves with something important, the ecology of the earth. If we can bring back the earth to a survivable state, then the economy will follow. Remember picking up litter, generates funds from recycling and from new products recycling causes to be created, to collect the litter, to recycle the litter, and to be made from the litter. Litter can also be used to operate the machinery to process the litter.
I define litter as anything left over after the product is used or from the actual product container.

Vice Squad
From our May issue: They terrorize other government officials, and they’re so secretive that their names aren’t even revealed to a harmless federal employee directory. And they’ve helped ruin the country. Meet Dick Cheney’s staff.
By Robert Dreyfuss
Web Exclusive: 04.17.06
Bad heart, errant shotgun, and Halliburton stock options in tow, Dick Cheney has ruled the White House roost for the past five years, amassing enough power to give rise to the joke that George W. Bush is “a heartbeat away from the presidency.”
Yet, despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of words have been written on Cheney’s role in the Bush administration, most of what’s been written fails to explain how the vice president wields his extraordinary authority. Notoriously opaque, the Office of the Vice President (OVP) is very difficult for journalists to penetrate. But a Prospect investigation shows that the key to Cheney’s influence lies with the corps of hard-line acolytes he assembled in 2001. They serve not only as his eyes and ears, monitoring a federal bureaucracy that resists many of Cheney’s pet initiatives, but sometimes serve as his fists, too, when the man from Wyoming feels that the passive-aggressive bureaucrats need bullying. Like disciplined Bolsheviks slicing through a fractious opposition, Cheney’s team operates with a single-minded, ideological focus on the exercise of American military power, a belief in the untrammeled power of the presidency, and a fierce penchant for secrecy.
Since 2001, reporters and columnists have tended to refer to Cheney’s office obliquely, if at all. Rather than explicitly discuss the neoconservative cabal that has assumed control of important parts of U.S. policy since September 11, they couple references to “the civilians at the Pentagon” with “officials in the vice president’s office” when referring to administration hard-liners. But rarely do the mainstream media provide much detail to explain who those people are, what they’ve done, and how they operate.
At the high-water mark of neoconservative power, when coalition forces invaded Iraq in March 2003, the vice president’s office was the command center for a web of like-minded officials in the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, and other agencies, often described by former officials as “Dick Cheney’s spies.” Now, thanks to a misguided war and a bungled occupation, along with a string of foreign-policy failures that have alienated U.S. allies and triggered a wave of anti-American feeling around the globe, the numbers and influence of those Cheneyites outside the office have receded. No longer quite so commanding, the office seems more like a bunker for neoconservatives and their fellow travelers in the administration. Yet if only because of Dick Cheney’s Rasputin-like hold over the president, his office remains a formidable power indeed....**
I am the great Decider
I’M THE GREAT DECIDER
Oh yay-yus, I’m the great Decider [ye haw]
Deciding for earthlings en masse [ye haw]
I feed their fears and delight in their tears,
They trust me and I kick their ass.
-- with apologies to The Platters/Freddie Mercury
Gloryoski! The once and future king has spoken. OK Republicans, “Can you hear him now?” He came into office announcing that he was the Great Uniter and you know what happened then.
Is this your leader that you revere and admire? Do you hold your country in such low esteem that you would continue to let this person rule over it while ignoring Congress, The Constitution and us lesser critters.
April 26th will mark the day where Bush has 1000 days left in office. 1000 days to be the great decider. 1000 days to decide what country he will use our children’s lives to invade next.
Actually, he has decided that we won’t even have time to think about such things because we will be kept busy with the coming election and with floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and the rising cost of gas.
Oh yay-yus, I’m the great decider [ye haw]
Deciding what science can be [ye haw]
What supports my claims and serves my aims
Is all I’ll allow you to see.
- ibid
Now we are faced with another fake-out as spring cleaning at the White House proceeds Bush style. Old faces in the other slots as cronies move in or up. But the change will only be cosmetic; the punishing, destructive policies will continue.
No one should be complacent or pleased at what they call the demotion of Karl Rove. It just appears to take him out of government, thus making him less of a target for the Special Council or any future investigations.
Oh yay-yus, I’m the great decider [ye haw]
I decide for you what is best [ye haw]
My long reign of error begat oodles of terror
My incompetence meets every test.
- ibid
I hear the voices coming from God
Giving arrogant ME, absolute power over air, land
and sea.
- ibid
YEE HAW!

People will pay for just...
...about anything these days. If this were really the voice of John Lennon, no doubt his widow would be all over the place trying to get her share of the revenue.
Imagine!
EVP has been around since there was radio...
...just like doctored photos went hand in hand with that little light-gathering box (remember the "pictures of fairies"?) For some reason, a huge number of people seem unable to deduce a little electronic wizardry coupled with a voice impersonator.
But then, a third of the US still believes that Dubya is something other than a halfwit loser.
Go figger.
