California Becomes Second State to Introduce Bush Impeachment

Joining Illinois, California has become the second state in which a proposal to impeach President Bush has been introduced in the state legislature. And this one includes Cheney as well.
California Assemblyman Paul Koretz of Los Angeles (where the LA Times has now called for Cheney's resignation) has submitted amendments to Assembly Joint Resolution No. 39, calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney. The amendments reference Section 603 of Jefferson's Manual of the Rules of the United States House of Representatives, which allows federal impeachment proceedings to be initiated by joint resolution of a state legislature.
The resolution, in the words of Koretz's press release, "bases the call for impeachment upon the Bush Administration intentionally misleading the Congress and the American people regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify an unnecessary war that has cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives and casualties; exceeding constitutional authority to wage war by invading Iraq; exceeding constitutional authority by Federalizing the National Guard; conspiring to torture prisoners in violation of the 'Federal Torture Act' and indicating intent to continue such actions; spying on American citizens in violation of the 1978 Foreign Agency Surveillance Act; leaking and covering up the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson, and holding American citizens without charge or trial."
Koretz submitted amendments gutting AJR No. 39, a resolution unrelated to impeachment, to the Assembly Rules Committee. The Rules Committee may take up the bill this week for referral, allowing him to formally introduce the amended resolution.
AJR 39 is a bill introduced in January by Koretz calling for a moratorium on depleted uranium:

Illinois Legislators Were First to Introduce Bill for Bush Impeachment
Three members of the Illinois General Assembly have introduced a bill that urges the General Assembly to submit charges to the U. S. House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President of the United States, George W. Bush, for willfully violating his Oath of Office to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and if found guilty urges his removal from office and disqualification to hold any other office in the United States.
The Jefferson Manual of rules for the U.S. House of Representatives makes clear that impeachment proceedings can be initiated by a state legislature submitting charges. The state of Illinois is on its way toward forcing on the House what not a single one of its members has yet had the courage to propose: Articles of Impeachment.

So I don't know why, or how, but somehow, I ended up getting an e-mail from the Republican Party. "Signed" by Mehlman, it's a survey that asks my opinions as a dutiful...non...republican. That way I can be part of the "pulse of the Republican Party".

Chernobyl nuclear power plant
Official UN figures predicted up to 9,000 Chernobyl-related cancer deaths. But a Greenpeace report released last week estimated a figure of 93,000. Greenpeace said other illnesses could bring the toll up to 200,000. There is a Simple way to stop the US Petroleum problem
If the US Companies would use the Petroleum they produce within the Nation's borders verses exporting it, we could stop the need to import petroleum.
But the US Oil Companies can sell their US produced petroleum for more money through exports than what it costs them to import from the middle east and other countries.

Don't know about exporting US petroleum
Most people agree that domestic production peaked in like 1972 and has declined ever since. At the time of the Arab oil embargo in 1974 we were only importing about 15% of our oil. US oil costs something between $ 35 to $50 dollars a barrel to produce so with $ 17 a barrel oil from the middle east there was no reason to pump any domestic oil. We still only import about 55% of our oil so the use of domestic supplies is why the oil companies are making such high profits.

Supply and demand: when you control the supply, you can demand what you want for it.

McCarthy has given $7,700 to Democratic campaigns in the past three election cycles; her husband has donated $2,500, according to public records. While CIA employees face restrictions on political activity under the Hatch Act, they are allowed to donate to candidates.
Johnson said McCarthy never suggested to him that she had a political view or shaped intelligence to conform to an ideology.

And now for something completely different...
Two of the bigger stories today concern rising gas prices and the increasing number of the working uninsured. So far I've witnessed a lot of wasted effort characterized by discussions of "tweaking the system" to make things all better. But the main causes are being ignored.
Instead of admitting that oil is a finite substance that continues to be drained at a rate consistent with a drunk sailor's wallet on his first night of shore leave, the pundits, analysts and other politicians concentrate on methods of supply that are, in the grand scheme, transient. In the long run, Exxon's ex-CEO's 400,000,000 buck retirement, while odious, is really beside the point. What matters is that we oil-addicts refuse to admit the simple truth: that there are too many of us gulping down too many petro-gallons. We've probably passed "peak oil" by now; from now on, it's all downhill. The party is indeed over.
As for health care, as opposed to health insurance, a single-payer, all-inclusive, non-profit system is the only one that makes sense. Anything else is, IMHO, just one more kowtow to global (and anti-democratic) corporate capitalism--which, BTW, won't give up the power it's stolen without a fight.

Not being well versed in Insurance history...when/how did Health Insurance companies...go public..and decide that its more important to reward inversters well, than it is to see that the people who are paying for a service, get that service?
Also, will it take less time for Oil Execs...when buried...to become new petroleum sources than did the dinosaurs????

Profit has always been the major concern for big corporations, at least in my memory. The actual nuts-and-bolts of how it's gained, and how that might have changed over the years, is something I can't answer. I guess I've always figured that in the end one doesn't need to know such details in order to be wary of the overall effect, any more than one needs to understand how a car works, in order to realize that it's not a good idea to step out in front of one when it's bearing down on you at 75 mph.
As for the oil execs....well, IMHO, it might not take them long to "petrol-fy", since they're already pretty gassy (more "flatulence" references?)
Not a stupid question at all
Private health insurance really predates but developed along side public health care. The better question -- the thing you should really examine -- is the disappearance of non-profit private health insurers.
When I last checked, all of the non-profit private health insurers had disappeared in Virginia -- I don't think there's even one left. The non-profit private health insurers are rapidly disappearing in all states -- a few states have only one left. Blue Cross Blue Shield was the last major non-profit private insurer in Virginia. This is a big deal.
You're asking the right questions. Profit for private insurance companies, and burdening employers and employees with the full weight of financing both (1) health care and (2) health insurers' profits, are the crux of the health care crisis. Under the present system, public health care (i.e., tax money, usually general revenue tax money, the most expensive tax dollars a state has) must absorb the people who can't pay into the public insurance pool. That's why Medicaid is either the first or second biggest budget item in every single state.
In other words, public health care can't spread the risk across the larger pool of all Americans, healthy and unhealthy. Public health care is forced to cover those who can't pay anything in, while for-profit insurers continue to kick high-risk insureds (i.e., people who need health care) out in the cold or into the public system.
This is why our present system is doomed. Most people think they don't understand health care financing enough to talk about it. But it is really important, because it threatens all state budgets. We have to learn and talk about it.

With Rudy Giuliani considering a run for president in 2008, a documentary aimed at tearing down his Churchillian image since Sept. 11 is about to be released.
Premiering next month, "Giuliani Time" turns a critical lens on the former mayor's controversial tenure in New York before his reassuring leadership in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks elevated his reputation.
"I'm not claiming there's anything approaching objectivity about this film," director Kevin Keating said in an interview. "It's a corrective to the perception of Rudy and the miracle of crime reduction in New York, Rudy and the miracle of 9/11."
The film, made for about $1.5 million, is set to run at just one New York City theater for two weeks beginning May 12. But Keating said he hopes the reception, and Giuliani's rising political profile, will help it make its way onto screens around the country. A DVD version is set for release next fall.
Giuliani, who served two terms as mayor from 1994 to 2002, is depicted as a Machiavellian hothead who allowed police to trample civil liberties _ particularly those of blacks, artists and welfare recipients _ in the name of maintaining public order.
Among other things, the film suggests Giuliani was obsessed with ridding the city of "squeegee men" - homeless people who wash drivers' windshields and demand payment - but cared little about reducing poverty or creating jobs. He is also painted as a moral hypocrite, one who threatened to pull public funding from a controversial art exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum but had no qualms about parading a mistress before the public.

What is the Independent Women's Forum? Who runs the show at their Washington, DC-based offices and what are they about?
Media Transparency, a website tracking the money behind conservative politics, says that IWF, which has a $1.3 million yearly budget, is "neither Independent nor a Forum. Not independent because it is largely funded by the conservative movement. Not a forum because it merely serves up women who mouth the conservative movement party line."
