Today's Show: Wednesday, June 14, 2006
Hello. We're posting Wednesday's blog a little early today. We've wrapped up our broadcast from the Take Back America Conference in Washington DC and Rachel's back in New York.
We'll be talking today about Bush's trip to Baghdad yesterday, and the stupendous photo ops that it created. Our favorite thus far? Say cheese!
That's White House Press Secretary and Flautist, Tony Snow, along with White House Counselor Dan Bartlett. Who suddenly is bearing a striking resemblance to Karl Rove -- who knew!
Our guests on Wednesday's show: Staff Director at the Senate Democrats Communications Center, Andy Fois will join us to talk about democratic strategies.
Also, we'll air Rachel's interview with Robert Redford on Wednesday. In addition to being an actor, producer and director, Robert Redford is an environmental activist. He spoke at the Take Back America Conference on behalf of the Apollo Alliance, a group that promotes energy independence. We caught up with him at Take Back America for a quick interview.

Tasini over Clinton
Jonathan Tasini is a true anti-war progressive. Clinton doesn't even belong in the same ROOM as progressives. If Tasini is to be expected to make a dent in this campaign, people have to start talking more about him. Otherwise, Clinton will let these dumbasses frame her as a "progressive" and go with it even though she's more right-wing than many Repug-licans! I'm glad Norman Solomon knows his stuff. But look how many others don't know THEIRS!
www.MandateTHIS.org
Jonathan Tasini v Clinton
I absolutely agree. I'm constantly hearing the lament on AirAmerica that "Democrats aren't expressing their vision," "Democrats aren't advancing a plan." Not true--it's just that AirAmerica, The Nation, Salon.com and the few other progressive media outlets rarely air that vision.
We have a viable progressive Democratic candidate for Senate right here in New York, and I've yet to hear him interviewed on your shows! Unlike Clinton, Tasini's a true anti-war candidate, pro-labor, and in favor of Medicare for all Americans. He has a plan on how to address the Israel-Palestine situation. He's been endorsed by Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin, Howard Zinn, a bunch of PDA and DFA groups...so how about inviting him on? How about even checking out his website, www.TasiniForNewYork.com ?
You can't stick to your usual cadre of "popular" progressive guests. Hey, Al Gore's awesome, RFK Jr's great, but they're not running for office. You have to invite the people who are out there trying to get into office. Certainly, Tasini is someone you should be interviewing.

Link, what's a link? All you need to know is that B75 channels Wikipedia on a daily basis. I'm shocked he hasn't yet informed us that June 14 is Int'l Webloggers Day. Oh, but maybe he's been all distracted by Flag Day. Oops, that's Bill Frist who's distracted by Flag Day... ;-)

You would have noticed, the 1777 item, that is Flag Day by it's correct Congressional Specification.

For Your Information, Steve
History is to vast to ignore anything.
Unlike you and your posts, I find one item for each and everyone I have associated with so far.
It is easier (for me) to post all these items at once, verses, many individual posts. (many is not efficient)
I separate each item with a blank line, simplifying the viewing of relevant items, and making it easier to read.
This is something you should try, otherwise as with a newspaper, the first line of the post is only read and the people move on.
If you prefer to read posts only from specific writers, the blog gives you that ability.
(I posted Tuesday night, because I have to start some field work tomorrow morning early, things always working out to my advantage, this is one of the advantages of being a Taoist God)

only 574 copies sold in a week - Ouch
No, Mary, it's not your turn
Posted by BobcatJH in General Discussion: Politics
Tue Jun 13th 2006, 11:43 AM
Mary Cheney, America's top self-loathing lesbian, made waves last month when her new book, "Now It's My Turn", hit the shelves. Apparently, as the title indicates, she had been waiting patiently to speak, presumably while her party tried to legislate her out of existence. Unburdened by reality and with the fury of pent-up rage within, Cheney set out to stalk the bestseller lists.
Her opening flourish was impressive, as it should have been to warrant her reported $1 million advance from Simon and Schuster. Calling a presidential candidate a "son of a bitch" and his vice presidential candidate - no, not her father - a "total slime" drew notice, as did her claim that the Democrats used her sexual orientation as a political ploy.
But a funny thing happened on the way to literary success: Cheney's not enjoying any. Her book has only sold less than 6,000 copies since its May 9 release. During the week of June 3, for instance, "Now It's My Turn" sold a mere 574 copies. So while it may be somebody's turn, it's most certainly not Cheney's. ...

Speaking of history....
Has anyone noticed how both Republicans and Democrats (but mostly the former) constantly use the notion of "history will judge us" to sidestep responsibility for the present botch jobs they constantly wheel out? I couldn't believe that within 6 months of the beginning of the war, President Shrub began accusing those who could see how things were starting to sour as intent on "re-writing history" (which I called 'current events' at the time). I guess the lesson is here that what we actually now know doesn't count for squat when rabid republicans can turn morons like Reagan into the single-handed conqueror of the Soviet Empire. Based on that track record, start looking for some present revisionism that Pr. Shrub will be known as the greatest president of all time...
Revisionism
"Pr. Shrub...greatest president of all time..."
Not unlikely at all; recall, after about ten years, Richard "Turdwhacker" Nixon suddenly became "an elder statesman". I cringed mightily at that point, and started ramming my head into the old apple tree just for relief.

More Republicrats
I can't believe Rachel is promoting the idea that the Dems should go farther right-wing. This is why they've been losing elections since the mid-80's! Everyone knows by now that voters will go for a real Rethug than a fake one. These idiots have to stand up and be real Democrats, stick with their platform (well, have a consistent platform) and voters might respect them and vote for them. But NOOOOOO! We're stuck with this idiotic strategy that will further erode any resistance to the neocon takeover of the country. I'm looking into Canada again.

Yo, Rache!
I was confused about the meaning of the post, as well. However, I thought it was not only weasely of the interviewee to be waffling around on the democratic platform and position (he didn't seem to take a stand on anything-- thereby nullifying the entire gist of your interview), but I was really disappointed with your letting him get away with it, saying only, "well, we disagree..."

Could Fois possibly be less effective?
Leaving aside his totally failed attempt to reconcile Clinton's and Reid's comments on Iraq mission plans, I've got two other bones to pick with Mr. Fois:
First, that was probably the most uninspired reading of party platform planks I've ever heard - his voice was full of ennui, sounding like he was more complaining about all the bills he had to pay rather than championing his Party's core principles. Add a little sarcasm and he'd sound exactly like a republican reading the same list.
Second, why oh why does party leadership feel to need to constantly disparage "the bloggers?" One would think that the Democratic Party would be bending over backward to attract the (postive) attention of the tens if not hundreds of thousands of highly motivatived, activist, Dem partisans who read dailyKos. Instead Mr Fois goes out of his way to make a mildly offensive crack about "pocket protectors" at their conference. Way to go! Alienate your base. What's next on the agenda, Mr. Fois?

VA Senate race
DrG, care to weigh in on Webb's win of the Dem. nomination (i.e., more than your previous comment), in light of today's Underbelly? I'm interested to hear what you (and others in VA) have to say...
Would also be interesting to hear Rachel debate her watch-both-parties-shift-more-to-the-right theory with Mudcat Saunders. Time to invite Mudcat back, TRMS?
Re: VA Senate Race
I'm very happy with Webb's win in VA yesterday and don't think we are compromising anything. I don't think we just put up a "less liberal" candidate just so we can put down the despicable Allen. I think Webb's the better man for our country. I don't care that Webb just recently turned Democrat. In fact,I don't think he left the Democratic Party after serving in Viet Nam. I think the Democratic Party left him. He turned to the Republican Party for a time, but he's back now. What I care about is that he is a man of unwavering character and principle. He has always been a vocal opponent of the Iraq War. He served honorably in Viet Nam and understands that Americans don't stand for torture. He will protect and defend the Constitution. He already almost got his ass shot off doing just that. He will stand against the President on executive power and the Iraq War; he will fight for the middle class;he will fight for veterans benefits; he will fight big business and lobbyist control of Congress. His opponent may be a life-long Democrat and might have a bigger D after his name, but I found his lobbyist and big business ties disturbing. I think Rachel is right about the trend of Democratic candidates moving to the right just to be more competitive against Republican candidates, but I think the VA Senate race is not the best example. He's overall the strongest, best candidate and I think he's gonna whoop Allen's ass. I think he will serve us well.
Re: VA Senate Race
DrG, thanks for your comments and take on Webb's win. I am buoyed by your thoughts that he will beat Allen in Nov. However, ever the pessimist, I will be shocked if he does. Just like I'll be surprised if Lieberman isn't reelected in CT.
I have a sinking feeling already that I will be severely disappointed on election night. Somehow, someway, I think all the Christian conservatives will flock to the polls, in lockstep with whatever crap the Bushies tell them this fall. I hope I am wrong.

Bush Guantanamo
June 14, 2006 7:04 AM The Associated Press
WHITE HOUSE (AP) _ President Bush says he'd like to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but the U-S is holding "some people that are darned dangerous." He says Guantanamo can't be closed without a plan for what to do with the terror suspects.
Want a "plan", George? How about: "Charge them officially, put them on trial, and then let American justice run its course?" Granted, it will take time, and money--especially if any of the "detainees" are actually guilty of something--but certainly not much more than it's costing to house them for eternity. Not to mention the non-dollar cost (yes, there are such things) that the US is paying, in bad PR.

The left wing scheme machine...
...is pathetic.
The Andy Fois interview and the underbelly provide two examples that the Democratic Party is run by idiots. They have no idea what it takes to win.
It seems in order to figure out how to win, they've looked at how the Repubs were successful the last few elections -- by moving right and reaching out to the extreme right wingers. The Dems took the wrong message from what they observed. Instead of moving right to reach out to the middle-of-the-roaders, they should move LEFT and energize their own base.
