TRAGIC SHOOTING
On today’s show Rachel will talk to Amie Steele, Editor of the Collegiate Times, Virginia Tech’s Campus Newspaper, where she’ll gives the latest on the shootings at Virginia Tech today.
GUN CONTROL
Ladd Everitt, Communications Director with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence joins us to talk about todays horrific VA Tech shooting and how it will affect the gun control debate in the United States
VIRGINIA POLITICS
We’ll also speak with Dave "Mudcat" Saunders, Rural Strategist for the John Edwards Campaing and author of "Foxes in the Henhouse" who will join us from Nashville, Tennesse to talk about rural politics and Edwards’ rural campaign launch. He is also an alumnus of Virginia Tech and will give us his thoughts on today’s shootings.
TWO SPY AGENCIES IN IRAQ
Members of the Iraqi government have set-up a "shadow" secret service because of suspicion of Iraq's CIA-funded national intelligence agency
CABINET MEMBERS QUIT
The Iraqi government's cabinet has 38 posts. Six of those are now empty, after cabinet ministers loyal to Muqtada Al Sadr quit the Iraqi government in protest.
WAR CZAR
One of the generals the Bush Administration offered to make War Czar was Retired Marine General John Sheehan. He's written a must-read opinion piece in the Washington Post which explains why he didn't take that post.
BRITAIN'S WAR ON TERROR
A member of Tony Blair's cabinet in Britain said today that the phrase "War on Terror" is inappropriate - because it's a problem that can't be won by military means alone.

"Who does the President think he's F'n kidding?" --Keith Olbermann
I hate to try to second-guess the "Founding Fathers"
But in the late Eighteenth Century, when the Second Amendment was written and passed, "arms" were smooth-bore single-shot muzzle loaders with minimal effective range and a maximum fire rate of about 3 rounds/minute. Maybe we need to go back to that standard.

faulty constitutional argument for gun ownership
Randi Rhodes just spent several hours explaining that the Constitution calls for Governors to allow for an armed militia. It is up to each Governor to decide if citizens will keep the guns in their homes or in an AMORY. The NRA and right wingnuts in this country intentionally misinterpt the Constitution.
please, read the Constitution and stop allowing the right wing to distort the discussion (as per usual)
I carry a copy of the Constitution around with me in my wallet
Furthermore, I've read and re-read it several times.
That said, the Second Amendment has always been a source of frustration for me, due to its confused wording. In hindsight, a lot of misery could have been avoided, if only a couple of modifiers had been added, ie: "A well regulate Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms SOLELY AS A MEMBER OF THAT MILITIA shall not be infringed".

Shooting
It's sad that it always needs to be about politics... but I guess that happens.
I wonder what would have happened if everyone was carrying weapons as rights advocates might... uhm... advocate. In my eyes, I would think it might be even more chaos. Without some kind of coordination, I can imagine people taking shots at anyone seen carrying a gun. *shakes head*
This shooting is bad, it is just so bad...
What a horrible loss of life! My heart goes out to the parents and loved ones of these poor victims. I couldn't go to class tonight, I just needed to be near my family...Stuff is flooding back and forth in my head. Guns, what are we going to do about this issue? Guns, which have caused so much grief in my own family over the past years...Guns, the cause of intense debate in my own family. I was a gun owner and I had to get rid of mine because my partner hates them. One day, we would like that house far in the woods where our son can run among the trees and swim and fish in the lake far away from the urban jungle but I need to feel that in the event of some freaking intruder who might have issues with a gay, interracial, happy couple, with the tot, someone who might want to take us all out of this world, I might be able to do SOMETHING...This stuff scares me all over again...
All right, so, this story is not about me or my family, it is about those parents who will have to bury their loved ones now, what a horrible tragedy this is...
But, I still wonder at times what would have happened if my late brother- in-law, Calvin, had a gun next to him the day the car thieves hijacked his car on that dark road in Alabama and blew him away and took his mercedes on a joy ride for all of 30 minutes because you see, in that part of Alabama, the cops will find your ass before long before the car runs out of gas...And, good for those bastards because they are sitting in a jail in Alabama for life with all the time in the world to think about what they did...
I used to have these haunting dreams about Matthew Shepard and what might have happened if he had a gun the night those bastards attacked him...Maybe he would have had a freaking fighting chance, too...?
So, let us pray for the horrific loss of life at Virginia Tech, but what this is going to do, ultimately, is fuel the necessary ongoing debate on the issue of guns in this society...
And in my own house, also...

I'm not really ready to talk about gun control.
Guess we ought to wait to hear more. I'm sure the BAU at Quantico is already hard at work on it.
I love Spy VS Spy
Hey Rachel Kent all. We always said, nothing I own is worth me killing another person. Canadians are like that in Bowling for Columbine. Kung Fu, as long as they just want stuff, and leave their hands off me and my family, they can steal my stuff. But if someone breaks into your house they better leave quick too, cause thats when, if you get your hands on them..... you'll snap em in many ways.
Gun law, in Florida, shoot first if threatened. You have to be at a certain distance, to use a gun, without it being able to be taken away, which to me says anyone shot under this law could have only bee shot out of a sort of premeditation.
Think in Kung Fu terms. Someone feels threatened by you, so they, pull out a gun. Well, if they do that, you beat the shit out of them, unless, they are far away when they pull out a gun. Which makes me wonder, how much of a threat you could be, so far away, to be out of reach of physical contact.
"He chased me for blocks and blocks". Maybe if Jason Vorhees just keeps coming and coming no matter how many bricks you hit him with, its OK to"go get a gun" to deal with the person threatning you. But I think I see a flaw in this thinking.
If Im or you're here, and he's over there, and he's a killer.... Unless me and you are yourself lurking around the wilderness, and somehow, we're somewhere in America and no ones around(it's getting crowded here you know) and some guy jumps out, unless you or I has a gun, if that guy goes, "you're threatning me", and pulls out a gun and he's not close enough that either you or I can just snatch it away out of his dumbass boogeny redneck hillbilly chicken shit hands and beat the the shit out of him, then there is no physical way possible, we could have been a threat to him, unless, he was a Lilputin and we we're inadvertantly going to step on him or her in the next jolly tromp.
That's of coarse in the normal world, senario. Thats...Unless, you make a law which legalizes concealed weapons and all of a suddon introduces a bunch of guns that can be pulled out, to be threatened by by people claiming to be threatened, threatning people, causing them to pull out guns in self defense for the threatning they feel, in a domino effect of violent gun incidents.
And that's how stupid that law is, as an example of typical overcompensating and mis-handling of the 2nd Amendment gun issue.
A few points I'd like to make but I'm too chicken to call in.
Most crimes are committed by males aged 16-25. Most gun crimes are committed with handguns. A simple thing that can be done is to raise the minimum age to own a handgun to over twenty-five; thirty years old would be a good point. Make repeating rifles and shotguns have a minimum age of 25. Make non-repeating long guns have a minimum age of 21.
Handguns are not necessary if your intent is to fight some sort of insurgency against your government if that is the pro-gun argument against expanded gun control. Handguns are not considered necessary for soldiers, rifles are. Handguns are at best a last resort weapon in combat.
All the guns you can own won't do you much good against a government that can ignore all the other freedoms, especially the Fourth Amendment right against unwarranted search and seizure. If the government can search anywhere they like any time they like, your right to own firearms won't be worth jack.

"Just because some idiot takes a gun a does this"
I agree. I say the same thing on not all drugs, but pot, "Just because some idiot jumps off a building once back in 1995 while on acid, doesnt mean the rest of us aren't responsible enough to spark up a bong hit. Right to bare bonghits. Call it neccessity or necessary luxery to deal with the stress of a world with a right to bare arms where Budwiser sponsers the Superbowl.
Why couldn't that one dude have said "You know, if you legalized every form of consuming marijuana in this country, the crime rate would go down. I don't know if according to this group or that groups bible its what they call, moral. But I guarantee the crime rate would go down. There'd be less deaths due to gun violence, or crimes of passion,"?
PS-Find out if this guy snapped cause he had faith based abstinence training and didn't know he could just jerk off, or in 10 years he wouldn't even know this girls name. Like, dude, come on. If it was over a girl. They'll say he was into goth or something, assholes. But yeah, maybe he was a victem of absitence training would turned it back on the society that mis understood him. Or maybe hes just some dude who went bonkers, but we should know cause conservatives always look for that "he listened to Jusad Priest! Thats why he shot everyone and himself" angle. I blame peer pressure to read the bible, or abstinence training so when his girlfriend left, after losing access to her oral and anal exception clauses that these kids seem to find themselves, he went bonkers. Something like that.
Another perspective
A right leaning talk radio host, Dori Monson, on a radio station in Seattle, tried to put this very sad incident into perspective for his listeners. He said more people died in car accidents today than were killed in Virginia and no one was crying out to ban cars. All I could do was shake my head. I do not want to ban guns but there needs to be some common sense in our laws. I never saw my grandfather go hunting with an AK-47 or an M-16. He used a hunting riffle and/or a shotgun. Until we move out of the 19th century mentality of the use of guns, we are going to continue having such a high rate of gun involved deaths whether it be from people shooting each other or themselves.

Under the provisions of the National Security Act of 1947, the CIA was established. [2] One of the main areas investigated by the CIA was mind control. The behavior control program was motivated by Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean use of mind control techniques. The CIA originated its first program in 1950 under the name BLUEBIRD. MKULTRA officially began in 1953. It was closed in 1964. In 1973, tipped off about forthcoming investigations, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered the destruction of any MKULTRA records. MC 3, 10, 17
The Senate Intelligence Committee did find some records during its investigation in 1976. Senator Frank Church, who led the congressional investigations of the CIA’s unlawful actions, said that the agency was “a rogue elephant" operating above the law as it plotted assassinations, illegally spied on thousands of Americans, and even drugged our own citizens in its effort to develop new weapons for its covert arsenal. [3] In 1977, through a Freedom of Information Act request, 16,000 pages of mind control documents were found, held as part of the Agency’s financial history. That is how much of this information has been pieced together. MC 5, 18, NB xvi, 38

The Deputy Director of the CIA revealed that over thirty universities and institutions were involved in an 'extensive testing and experimentation' program which included covert drug tests on unwitting citizens 'at all social levels, high and low, native Americans and foreign.' Several of these tests involved the administration of LSD to 'unwitting subjects in social situations.' At least one death, that of Dr. Olson, resulted from these activities. The Agency itself acknowledged that these tests made little scientific sense. The agents doing the monitoring were not qualified scientific observers.

Try EDUCATION instead. The fairness doctrine could never have been revoked if the PEOPLE WERE INFORMED about why it was instituted in the first place. Bush 41 would NEVER have been president his whereabouts on the day JFK was assassinated and all the Warren Commission documents had been released. Clinton would NEVER have signed NAFTA or passed FCC ownership consolidation if the public understood what Teddy Trustbuster THE BUCK STOPS HERE was all about. Finally the PEOPLE would NOT have stood silently by as the SCOTUS ruled AGAINST counting all the VOTES in Florida in 2000. WE WOULD NOT have had to raise the DEBT CEILING three times, or have scarred the minds and bodies of over 1,000,000,000 GI's who have cycled through IRAQ on an ILLEGAL WAR that wouldn't have happened if the PEOPLE were aware of Gobles-Goering BIG LIE Reichstag Fire, remembered the GULF OF TONKIN, The sinking of the MAINE, and OPERATION NORTHWOODS!!!
MORE FASCIST AUTHORITARIAN LAWS are NOT the solution, EDUCATION IS!!!!!!!!!!!!
“War is a Racket" came from a prominent Marine from the past, Smedley Butler. He was a two-time Congressional Medal of Honor winner known for his integrity. I’ll return to the quote, and his explanation of exactly what he meant by it, because he could as easily have been talking about the Iraq war. But in case you didn’t know, Butler is also famous for stopping a Fascist takeover of the White House!
In 1934, Butler went to his friends in the press and Congress with a remarkable tale. He claimed that bond trader Gerald MacGuire approached him in the summer of 1933, as a representative of a group of wealthy businessmen, and asked him to speak publicly on behalf of the gold standard so that soldiers would not be paid in “rubber money or paper money." When Butler refused, MacGuire offered him a cash bribe, which Butler also refused. MacGuire then told him what they really wanted was for him to lead a 500,000 man army to DC to protect President Franklin Delano Roosevelt from other coup plotters, and to install a “Secretary of General Welfare" to “take all the worries and details off his [FDR’s] shoulders."
Butler responded, “…my one hobby is, maintaining a democracy. If you get these 500,000 soldiers advocating anything smelling of Fascism, I am going to get 500,000 more and lick the hell out of you, and we will have a real war right at home."

Smedley Butler on Interventionism
War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses.
I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.
I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket.
There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism.
It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.
I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service.
I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.
During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

"A date that will live in infamy"
- President Roosevelt’s words at Pearl Harbor
When the SHOCK & AWE bombing of Iraq started, Schlesinger took the strongest position of anyone I’ve seen, of condemnation of it. First stated so strong that it wasn’t, almost never--didn't appear in the press and I haven't heard a word about it since. As the line began he said this is a date, which will live in infamy. And he re-called President Roosevelt’s words at Pearl Harbor, a date that will live in infamy because the United States is following the path of the Japanese fascists.
This is one of the worst catastrophes in military history and also in political history. The most recent studies of the Red Cross show that Iraq has suffered the worst decline in child mortality, infant mortality, an increase in infant mortality known. But it’s since 1990. That is, it's a combination of the affect of the murderers' and brutal sanctions regime, which we don’t talk much about, which devastated society through the 1990's and strengthened Saddam Hussein, compelled the population to rely on him for survival, which probably saved him from the fate of a whole long series of other tyrants who were overthrown by their own people supported by the U.S.
And then came the war on top of it which has simply increased the horrors. The decline is unprecedented. The increase in infant mortality is unprecedented; it's now below the level of, worse than some of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa. It's one index of what's happened. The most probably measure of deaths in a study sponsored by M.I.T. incidentally carried out by leading specialists in Iraq and here last October was about 650,000 killed, soon to be pushing a million. There are several million people fled including the large part of the professional classes, people who could in principal help rebuild the country. And without going on, it's a hideous catastrophe and getting worse.
It’s also worth stressing that aggressors do not have any rights. This is a clear-cut case of aggression and violation of the U.N. Charter, a supreme international crime and in the words of the Nuremburg Tribunal, aggressors simply have no rights to make any decisions. They have responsibilities. The responsibilities are, first of all to pay enormous reparations and that includes for the sanctions-- the effect of the sanctions, in fact it ought to include the support for Saddam Hussein in the 1980's, which was torture for Iraqis and worse for Iranians.
The paid reparations hold those responsible, accountable and attend to the will of the victims. It doesn't necessarily mean follow blindly, but certainly attend to it. And the will of the victims is known, the regular U.S.-run polls in Iraq, and the government polling institutions, it's just an overwhelming support for either immediate or quick withdrawal of U.S. Troops, about 80 percent think that the presence of U.S. Troops increases the level of violence. Over 60% think that troops are legitimate targets. This isn’t for all of Iraq, if you take the figures of Arab Iraq where the troops are actually deployed the figures are higher. The figures keep going up. They're unmentioned, virtually unreported, scarcely alluded to in the Baker-Hamilton critical report. That’ll be our primary concern, along with the concerns of the Americans.

We live in a whacked society. We value violence and force while dismissing anything compassionate as weak. Then we get the end result of that and somehow we are astonished it happened.
"Anti-Iraq-War" Nazi-Klan in South Carolina
Don't worry too much about the Nazi-Klan being against the war in Iraq. I guarantee you it's sheer opportunism.
When they're recruiting, they lick their fingers and stick 'em up in the wind. When they've decided which way they think the wind is blowing on a major issue, they hop on and ride for recruiting/publicity purposes.
The white supremacists in NC and SC had always a "kill list" -- groups they wanted to wipe out. In the late '60s, they began to figure out that advocating killing Catholics wasn't so popular any more. So they played down that part of their platform - stopped talking about it at all. Aroudn the same time, they discovered gays were unpopular, and suddenly their literature and "misson statements" were filled with anti-gay diatribes.
Sheer opportunism, for recruiting. It will stay in their rhetoric as long as they think it draws in members. Then, you won't hear about it any more.
Guns & mental health
Paraphrasing Laura Flanders from a previous show:
"When fire arms are easier to get than mental healthcare, you know we are in trouble."
Guns don't kill people
Society's do.
Let's face it, while the US may be the most heavily-armed culture in history, Canada is not far behind--yet they don't regularly slaughter each other in huge numbers as do we south of their long and nervous border.
Why not? IMHO, there is a particular rank ugliness in being a citizen of the US, based largely, as one might expect, on its unique history. Forget the tales of "noble seekers of freedom", as the nation's founders are usually characterized: with a few noteworthy exceptions, most were instead religious fanatics, vicious drunks, murderers, pickpockets, horse-thieves, hookers and other misfits that the more civilized nations couldn't wait to get rid of. The early Americans realized this, I think; being human, they resented it, and thus began to take out their frustrations on those around them whom, being weaker, were easy targets: women, children, natives, indentured servants and slaves.
If you're near the bottom, you strike downwards.
And we, their descendants--at least those of us of a primarily European background--have inherited that culture-wide equivalent of "small man's syndrome", born of the notion that no matter what we do, others are laughing at us because we're just not good enough. It shows in the reaction to September 11, wherein Bush--a perfect example of an American breast-beater--blustered against a nation that not only had nothing to do with the incident, but by all measurements would be unable to put up much of a fight.
We strike out, we win, we feel better.
Would this bozo at VT have been able to kill 32 people if they'd have been armed themselves? Better to ask, if Americans insist on being Americans, would ubiquitous gun-toting condemn us to Old West-style carnage, where the mildest slight to our personal self-esteem--as refered to in the much-vaunted concept of a "culture of honor"--guarantee a blaze of six-guns and even more thousands dead for no defensible reason?
Honestly, I don't know. But I think that unless we get a handle on our tendancy towards hair-trigger violence, then all the gun control laws we have and might someday pass are doomed to failure...particularly since there are so many firearms in existence as it is, thanks to a centuries-long liberal interpretation of the Second Amendment, that it would take decades--and billions of dollars, and likely thousands upon thousands of lives--to sieze and destroy them all.
Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.--Kurt Vonnegut

But the idea that the violence at Va Tech would have been reduced if all the students had been armed?
You're not saying cross-fire would have kept the death and injury rate down, are you?
I can't buy that.
Crossfire from armed students ... re: essic (sissy?)
Simple solution. You've heard of a designated diver, same logic. Have the ROTC kid in the class do the honors. If is hit first, or if there are multiple shooters, it's likely to become a hostage situation and SWAT will handle it.
Having armed pilots barricaded behind hardened cockpit doors makes less sense than depriving young adults, old enough to drive a lethal weapon and vote of the opportunity to get qualified at a certified range and carry a side arm, especially if they are a member of a gun club, are the child of Judge or a Prosecutor, or an auxiliary cop.
Making it a crime to defend yourself is exactly what authoritarian sociopaths leaders on a CRUSADE for a NEW WORLD ORDER need to assure the SAFETY of their indentured work force.

What makes you think kids smart enough NOT to volunteer for cannon fodder duty OVER THERE who are pursuing a college degree are less qualified to KILL A BAD GUY should it become necessary, assuming they are not a VEGAN?

The Female of the Species
When the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside.
But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
When Nag the basking cobra hears the careless foot of man,
He will sometimes wriggle sideways and avoid it if he can.
But his mate makes no such motion where she camps beside the trail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
When the early Jesuit fathers preached to Hurons and Choctaws,
They prayed to be delivered from the vengeance of the squaws.
'Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
Man's timid heart is bursting with the things he must not say,
For the Woman that God gave him isn't his to give away;
But when hunter meets with husbands, each confirms the other's tale
The female of the species is more deadly than the male.
Man, a bear in most relationsworm and savage otherwise,
Man propounds negotiations, Man accepts the compromise.
Very rarely will he squarely push the logic of a fact
To its ultimate conclusion in unmitigated act.
Fear, or foolishness, impels him, ere he lay the wicked low,
To concede some form of trial even to his fiercest foe.
Mirth obscene diverts his angerDoubt and Pity oft perplex
Him in dealing with an issueto the scandal of The Sex!
But the Woman that God gave him, every fibre of her frame
Proves her launched for one sole issue, armed and engined for the same;
And to serve that single issue, lest the generations fail,
The female of the species must be deadlier than the male.
She who faces Death by torture for each life beneath her breast
May not deal in doubt or pitymust not swerve for fact or jest.
These be purely male diversionsnot in these her honour dwells
She the Other Law we live by, is that Law and nothing else.
She can bring no more to living than the powers that make her great
As the Mother of the Infant and the Mistress of the Mate.
And when Babe and Man are lacking and she strides unclaimed to claim
Her right as femme (and baron), her equipment is the same.
She is wedded to convictionsin default of grosser ties;
Her contentions are her children, Heaven help him who denies!
He will meet no suave discussion, but the instant, white-hot, wild,
Wakened female of the species warring as for spouse and child.
Unprovoked and awful chargeseven so the she-bear fights,
Speech that drips, corrodes, and poisonseven so the cobra bites,
Scientific vivisection of one nerve till it is raw
And the victim writhes in anguishlike the Jesuit with the squaw!
So it comes that Man, the coward, when he gathers to confer
With his fellow-braves in council, dare not leave a place for her
Where, at war with Life and Conscience, he uplifts his erring hands
To some God of Abstract Justicewhich no woman understands.
And Man knows it! Knows, moreover, that the Woman that God gave him
Must command but may not governshall enthral but not enslave him.
And She knows, because She warns him, and Her instincts never fail,
That the Female of Her Species is more deadly than the Male.

This is a complete waste of my time.
No, essic, it is not...
Your post was a very important part of a very important dialogue and thank you for it...
Grissy
Very kind of you.
I'd like to think I have something of at least a little importance to say. I'm not brilliant. I'm not powerful. But I have studied violence formally; I have done some legal and political science research and writing about violence; in my younger days, I worked with ecumenical activists and government officials to try to prevent violence when armed militias decided to parade down Southern streets spewing hate and trying to provoke mass violence; I have held posts devoted to helping crime victims; I have represented victims and perpetrators of violence in courts; I have drafted laws; I volunteer for community based shelters; and I geekily follow Bureau of Justice Statistics reports on violence as avidly as some people follow American Idol. I've kept some people from getting killed. I've failed to help others and have read about their deaths in the papers before their hearings occurred more than once. I've had clients who were pushed out of cars on interstates at 70 mph; others have been pushed in front of cars. I've had clients who were shot, stabbed, doused with kerosene and set on fire, tortured, raped, and left in wheelchairs when the system has failed. I've contributed my best to improving the legal system's ability to provide just and peaceful resolution of conflict. Our collective best has not been enough.
It doesn't often seem that this blog is the place to share what I think I know or to learn new things. Just a choice of forum thing, you know.
I happen to believe that the very best explanation for violence -- the single factor that always surfaces -- is that the perpetrator went through some period of extreme humiliation, insult, degradation, contemptuous treatment, and dehumanization in the form or physical or emotional violence. These experiences can severely distort (even obliterate) personhood and empathy in direct proportion to the severity of the abuse. I can almost guarantee you that we will learn something like this about the shooter at Va Tech. Just wait and watch.
I don't like offering any idea on the blog, only to be met with cries of "SISSY." In fact, I think name-calling is one type of contempt and attempted humiliation. It's not just wrong. It's damaging. It builds a bad scary world, drop by drop.
I want civility here, not for aesthetic purposes. I want people to treat everyone else with respect -- leave people with their dignity even if you disagree with them. Don't we all know how to question an idea without being mean? I get upset when people spot weakness and start spewing venom.
All persons deserve respectful treatment. Mentally ill people deserve our respect and are entitled to our kindness and patience. So are incarcerated people. So are the homeless, and so are kings, and victims and perpetrators -- and the weak and the strong. Period. And if we can't summon up kindness or patience at a particular moment, we ought to have the decency to shut up and not do damage.
I know I'll never change the blog culture. But I can at least say what I think. And that's what I think.
Just a note...
... to say I'm proud and happy that y'all are blogging here with such deliberation and insight.
Rachel
Rachel, you know, we take our cue from you...
...You inspire us to use our brains and think and to digest and to put things together..You set a high standard for all of us, your bar is high and if we can meet those standards even half the way, we are way ahead of the game...
Thanks...
Essic, that was so very profound...
...and I cannot think of anything to add to it...It just said it all...
I think this will continue to be a topic of discussion for a long time to come. I know in my own house, it was the first time we ever yelled at each other and retreated to separate rooms for awhile. So, I compromised and got rid of my guns but I still wonder if by doing so, I am putting my family in harms way by leaving us vulnerable to some disturbed person one day. As I have mentioned in a previous post, I am absolutely conflicted on the issue of guns because I have a loved one in my family violently taken away from us because of gun violence and that empty plate at the table haunts our family to this day...
I hope this dialogue goes on for as long as it has to because our very survival as a people might depend on it...
I thnk though, that we can all contribute to this discussion by remembering to respect one another for our differences of opinion and also, for conducting this debate with a respect for each other and respect also, for the person whose name and face is above this blog...
Thanks, Grissy
I'm conflicted, too. I do own a gun -- a honkin' big gun, chosen carefully for personal protection when I lived in a rural area near Charlottesville (about two miles from Monticello, which I passed every day on my way to work). We had a prolific serial murderer on the loose in the area and a wave of home intrusion and burglaries in rural areas stretching from Afton mountain to Lake Monticello and Shadwell to Earlysville and North Albemarle County -- a huge area. The law enforcement jurisdiction was extremely large and the topography was mountainous, which caused law enforcement response time to be unacceptable. It was a given that if someone intended me harm, I'd be dead before the police arrived and the neighbors were too far away to notice anything was wrong. And I made a decision at one point that I was never again going to flee my home because of an intruder. I've had to do that four times since I was 18.
I got Virginia's concealed permit, I took safety classes at the range where the sheriffs and police practiced, I joined the range and went at least once a month to make sure I could shoot accurately. My girlfriend was also conflicted but did all the same with me. I think there was value in having the pistol back then, especially since my girlfriend was traveling a lot.
But I wonder now whether I should have the thing at all. I left the pistol with a friend in Virginia when I lived in Massachusetts -- didn't think I needed it in the burbs of Boston where police are plentiful and nearby. I still live in a highly urban area, with a good police response time. I've thought about giving the gun to the police. It is a not a gun that any sane person would use for hunting.
Very very sorry about your brother-in-law.
See, that's it, the conflict, Essic...
There seems to be no middle ground on the gun issue, either people are on one side or the other and no middle at all...Bad people always seem to find access to them and where does that leave the rest of us? And the debate will and should continue...
One thing about the Virginia Tech situation...It reminded people that the wonderful poet in residence who teaches there, one of my favorite writer/poets, Nikki Giovanni, and a lung cancer survivor is alive and well....
And, just as feisty as ever...
Poetry and other random thangs
Poetry
This is one of those things a person is not really supposed to admit, but I just don't get poetry. Which is really odd, because I love short form writing (fiction and non-fiction), and I really really dig certain song-writers' lyrics. I even carry some poems in memory. And I read quite a bit of poetry. But most of it truly eludes me. So I write deliberately stinky poems -- purposefully rotten stuff. I've even gotten a few published. Which I think is my way of proving that I'm not alone -- that even some editors pretend to understand poetry.
Va Tech Personages
I picked up on a couple of stories about remarkable Giovanni through my RSS feeds. Also found this in my RSS feeds -- my hero of the day:

A long-time friend/soul-mate has been telling me something for a few years. He insists that we do not have to win Nobel prizes, amass fortunes, or run the fastest mile. He says there is only one thing we have to do -- see (really see) and enjoy each other. Just be there for each other.
Conflict/Ambiguity
My Dad is a scientist to his very core. He taught me to be comfortable with conflicted feelings and intellectual confusion. I'm satisifed that confusion and conflict are fundamentally good things. They provide the stongest opportunities for learning, maybe even seeing something no one has seen before. Tolerate uncertainty and anomaly, and resist the very normal impulse to find quick answers, and you can get real knowledge -- maybe even build a few unified theories. No need to rush answers. My Dad is a good man.

With regards to poetry, I'm with you all the way. The only poetry I ever really "got" was Bukowski's.
BTW, your dad sounds like an open-minded, good man.

Guy
Phew -- that's really a relief. I'm glad to know I'm not alone.
I only get the really straightforward stuff. Like Whitman, or Dickenson, or Ferlinghetti, or Yeats, or Gil Scott-Heron. Sometimes I get Rita Dove -- sometimes I don't. Got to hear her read her stuff at a black-tie AIDS fundraiser in C'Ville a few years ago. Left scratching my head and thinking I was more of a mountaineer than I want to think. Maybe this was partly because it was black-tie, and my dogs start to hurt when I wear that kind of shoe.
My Dad is a piece of work.
Always enjoy talking to you, Guy.
Turn the lights down low, open a nice bottle of wine...
...light a candle and open a book of poetry and read to each other...We need to read to each other like we read to our children. It may seem self-conscious at first but after a while, it will be one of the most loving and most wonderful things you can share with each other on a "quiet night with the door locked tight when the long, long day is done..."
It takes a while with poetry but well worth it in the long run...Try it...

...It is SISSY!!!...
(And proud...)
No
And after re-reading my post, I can't understand how one would get that impression. My contention is that gun violence is not exclusively due to the wide availability of guns, but rather something pathological in the American psyche. And until that is addressed, all the anti-gun laws imaginable--short of the purely Draconian and unconstitutional--are doomed to failure.
Sorry if I wasn't clear.

VTU shooting and the aftermath..................
If I were president the only people who would legally posses full auto or sub auto weapons would be the police and the military.
MP-5's, UZI's, M-16's, AR-15's, AK-47's and any other machine gun serve only 1 purpose to kill people.
We need stronger gun control laws in this country! We need something similiar to Massachusetts Bartley-Fox gun laws or New York's Sullivan act.
It's time we made any school a safe haven for our children.
It's time we held the NRA accountable for allowing the loopholes in the gun controls laws signed into law by President Bill Clinton
I would also close the loophole by requiring background checks at gun shows!
I would also make it a class A felony for anyone to be a straw buyer.
For those of you who don't know what that is. It's a person who buys a gun signs BATF form 4473 and declares that the gun was bought for them. Which is perjury. Then the person turns around and sells it to someone who couldn't legally purchase a gun.
Chris Rock has the right idea, he said we don't need gun control we need bullet control I think a bullet should cost $ 5,000 dollars each that way there would be no more innocent bystanders!

guns and violence
After 14 years of living in Europe, I can honestly say that we Americans have to really get a clue about gun violence. Nobody's coming to invade us in our homes. The veritable arsenal that is our country was not able to avoid 9-11.
Gun laws are much stricter in Europe and Canada, and people are still able to hunt here without any problem that I know of (yes, I do know some hunters!). Above all, anybody who is not too politically narrow-minded to have seen "Bowling for Columbine" can attest to the gun fatality statistics for other countries which are phenomenally lower than in the US. Why is that? Gun control laws, and governments agreeing that a person does not need an Uzi to shoot boar!
While I may agree that guns don't kill people, the people holding them do; if those people had no access to guns, they wouldn't be able to kill people with said guns. The assault weapons ban has to come back, law enforcement needs to be able to access gun data at a nationwide level, loopholes need to be closed and background checks need to be mandatory.
In France, a women who wants to have an abortion has to see a counselor and more or less justify why she wants to have it and be sure she understands the implications of her acts. Why don't people who want to buy guns have to do the same thing?! I am amazed that the same people who scream for their gun rights are often the same ones who scream about the right to life. I really need somebody to explain the illogic of this.
Lastly, my thoughts go out to those affected by the violence at VA Tech today. The Amish school shooting took place in my home county of Lancaster. I hope you can find inner peace.

How sensetive
Shrub and Mrs Shrub will be wearing black at VT today as a sign of (gag) "mourning". Needless to say, this dimwitted, hypocritical bastard has to my knowledge made no similar announcement stating that he will start doing the same for the thousands of dead in Iraq--no photo op, y'know.
It should also be noted that VT produces the most military officers of any non-service-related academy in the US.

"War on Terror"
A member of Tony Blair's cabinet in Britain said today that the phrase "War on Terror" is inappropriate - because it's a problem that can't be won by military means alone.
I totally agree with it.
If the military solution is continuing to worsen the situation in Iraq, maybe it is time to reinforce a humanitarian aid to bring peace to the world.
Instead spending $522 billion on U.S. military budget and wasting our precious lives by sending more troops, we can use the money to save so many lives by providing food, water access and sanitation.
According to The Borgen Project, it only costs $19 billion to eliminate global starvation and nutrition.
How long does is take for Bush and his to realize their "Plan B" is not working? I hope our next political leader will make a commitment to the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals to stop the global poverty.
I should explain
Cap'n --
My comment was absolutely not directed at you. I just had one of those moments where a light bulb clicked on over my head. I realized that I was replying to an anonymous internet stranger who called me a sissy and an agent of corporate/government oppression of the workers -- just because I said (a) I was open to hearing suggestions for sensible regulation of guns if it would help reduce violence, and (b) I didn't think 25,000 students packing heat at Va Tech would have made the place safer. And this from a person who chose the name of a maximum security prison for a screen name.
It suddenly struck me as supremely funny that I was responding. All week, I've been scrambling for time to do even half of what I need to do at work and at home, and I just couldn't believe I was spending even thirty seconds (that I didn't really have) on this. What the heck is wrong with me?
It's kind of like being in traffic when somebody talking on a cell phone drifts into your lane. You hit the horn, they veer back into their lane, they flip you off, and they speed off. You slow down, figuring the whole thing has very little to do with you. But, at the next light, you realize you've pulled up next to that same person. You look over at the car because you want to see what this person looks like. And swear to God, they're sitting there picking their noses, digging in up to the second knuckle. Maybe you just caught 'em at a bad moment -- maybe not. Who knows? Who cares?
At that point, how mad can you get? Personally, it just struck me as funny. But still a waste of my time. Do I give a crap if this person wants to make me into the poster child for one-world- goverment seize-all-the-guns-from-the-poor-tired-huddled-laboring-masses Illuminati murky conspiracies?
Just laughing at myself, Cap'n. Just at myself. Sorry I left you wondering if you upset me. You certainly did not.
Whew!
That's a relief. Not that I'm above pissing people off, but I like to do it deliberately.
And thanks for the vision of a champion nose-picker. Sounds like something I'd write!
