Many want to know how the laws physics were suspended several times on 9/11 making momentum invert, time compress, concrete self pulverize, aluminum and titanium spontaneously vaporize, bodies instantaneously evaporate and shatter into 3" bone fragments found 600 yards away from the WTC Towers belonging to evildoers whose names were not listed on any fight manifests yet were announced by selected news outlets to possibly be linked to Osama bin Laden the same day that became infamous as the New Pearl Harbor Day. Others would like to know what kind of magic dust, botanical, or pharmaceutical does an amateur take to overnight become a top gun ace pilot capable of the pinpoint navigation pushing the envelope necessary to perpetrate the pentagon maneuver using a stock commercial aircraft, while at the same time erasing all adjacent surveillance camera video evidence and avoiding damage to the lawn in the process. Also a few folks would like to know how did the evildoers created the mass hallucination of sequential detonations typical of controlled demolition that scores of NYPD and FDNY eyewitnesses have given corroborating depositions to authenticate, as well as how the evildoers inspired the Giuliani premonition (Silverstein had a similar one about the Solomon Bro's building), which caused the MAYOR and KERIK to call for NYPD evacuation (that didn't reach the FDNY's toy walky-talky's), on the basis that the WTC TOWERS were about to collapse, as they subsequently miraculously did symmetrically into their own footprint at freefall speed in an unprecedented fashion, excluding the use of prestaged cutting edge demolition technology, that is.

There is an air force stand down order issued for September 14th. The conspiracy rumour mill says that while there were 6 nukes on that B52 that took off from Minot last week, only 5 arrived in Louisiana. The theory is that the Bushies stole one, and are thinking of using it on September 14th.

In the past, (over 100 yrs ago) all carbonated beverages were made sparkling by fermentation.  Yeast eat the sugar, and produce carbon dioxide and alcohol.  Some better ales are still keg or bottle condidioned, and thereby naturally fermented. 

I believe that current techniques of the manufacture of this gas can be done through the mining of limestone that is rich in calcium carbonate, where it is heated and carbon dioxide produced.

It's interesting to note here, that up until the mass commercial production of compressed gasses, any soft drink had a small amount of alcohol in it.  I know that my home made root beer has a little alcohol, but no more than one or two percent.

Just for fun, the words to the Maori war haka ...

A "haka," by the way, is a Maori word meaning dance -- a specific type of dance that's accompanied by shouts and postures. The war haka we heard a snippet of on the show is called the "Ka Mate haka", and it's the one that the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team chants at the start of every game. So, that's the one that everyone knows. "Everyone" being New Zealand rugby fans, or, in my case, geeks who spent time as teenagers in the New Zealand embassy library in Washington D.C. trying to teach themselves to speak the Maori language.

Here it is ... shout it loud ...

...On September 11, 2001, I walked out of the house and like most New Yorkers, I saw what a beautiful day I thought it would be. The sky was blue, the air was low humidity, that marvelous September crisp sweater weather, my favorite time of the year. September was always like that. No matter how screwed up your life was, you could always  look to September as a time of hope for the future and change.  September was always a time for beginnings, getting things back together.

So, on September 11, 2001, I woke up and instead of turning on the radio or televison as usual, I put on a CD a friend had given me, "Most Requested Songs," by the late, great Susannah McCorkle, a neighbor of mine when I lived on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. I would see her, every now and then, doing that silly walk thing some runners do, not really running but doing that exaggerated walk thing some runners do when they are exercizing. For years, one of my September rituals was to see McCorkle open the fall with a gig at the Algonquin Oak Room and that was when I knew fall was here...The last song on that CD, I am not making this up is "For All We Know, We May Never Meet Again..."

So, on that day, I listened to that CD and lingered a bit too long at home and wondered why such a beautiful talented singer decided to end it all by jumping 15 stories to her death, earlier that year, and what demons or sadness made her decide to end her life in such a horrible way...I had an extra cup of coffee and stayed inside a bit longer, knowing that I would be chewed out by my boss for being late yet again.  I walked out of my apartment that day feeling a bit sad but I remember remarking to a neighbor as I looked up at the beautiful blue of the sky, just how wonderful it was to be alive and on such a beautiful day, also...

I have not written much about 9/11. It is still too soon for me, indeed...Suffice it to say, I feel lucky to be alive, in spite of the serious lung condition I got from being in that polluted area too long, post 9/11, and I will never forget the lies certain top level people made about the air quality. May they rot in hell. We knew they wre lying because we were getting sick and we started feeling bad almost immediately. But I will forever thank the brave firemen of this city who rescued us from the Fulton Street subway as the South Tower was coming down...I remember screaming to one, as the debris (and the noise) from the destroyed building came in on us, covering us with the white poisonous power and choking us, "I'm not going out there," and he yelled, "Yes, you will because you will either stay down here and die or get out of here." We were terrified but they pulled us out and saved our lives. What bravery they showed, indeed...Words cannot express the horror of that day, even to this day...For 11 years of my life, I worked a block and a half from WTC and was in the WTC every day during that time...It was where you went to lunch, or window shopped or saw free concerts or stopped at Borders and listened to some good jazz to ease the pressures of the day...Each year I am reminded how some people, like McCorkle, plan their deaths by suicide and others, on that day, through no choice of their own, had to make the horrible decision to either burn to death or jump 100 stories to their deaths...I hope and I pray that no American or no other human being has to ever make that horrible decision ever again...I hope and pray also, that no one is ever in such despair that they think suicide, a permanent solution to temporary problems is the way to go...I miss the Towers and I miss McCorkle...

Notice how today, on this day of remembrance of that horrible day, the weather was the complete opposite of what it was on September 11, 2001...Instead of blue skies and crisp low humidity, it was hot, oppressively humid, and the skies bought forth rain like I had not seen for a long time...I went out for lunch and was soaked to the bone by the time I got back to the office...

Maybe God, like the rest of us, was crying...

I suppose all I can say about this day is that we should pray for those who lost loved ones on that day and for those of us, the living, we should celebrate life each and every day and give our loved ones an extra hug each time we leave them...

Smother the burning water; deprive it of O2, e.g., use a CO2 (there's that compound again) fire extinguisher.  I about drove off the road last night (o.k., not really) when I heard Kent suggest supplying the burning water with O2 as a means to put it out.  O2 will just fuel the fire.  :bug:

Incidentally, one would use the smothering/CO2 extinguisher technique to put out fires of compounds that react with water, like the sodium metal in the MIT prank on the Charles River cleanup story from last week. 

Situations like this are exactly why fires in a chem lab are particularly troublesome.  When I was a grad student, one of the other research groups had a potassium metal fire.  Potassium is more reactive with water than sodium -- when the fire department arrived on the scene, all they saw were flames, for which their solution is ... water!  Made the damage MUCH worse.  That group's labs were totally trashed.  I should also mention that the student who started the fire was known to be, how to say, not the safest or most careful chemist around.

As for the state of the blog, Capn, please don't go!  There are still a few of us old-timers (read, coherent folks) around ... barely ...  :)

At this point I am a proponent of direct action. Over the past few months I have repeatedly engaged my representative and my senators, and they’ve repeatedly have had to call the police. You need to pump more energy into the transmission of the radio waves than you'll receive from using the highly inefficient burning that results. Rather than driving up to a pump to fill your car with sea-water, then burning it, you'd be better off driving the car directly from the batteries used to power the radio waves.

 The gushing that the media has done over this is typical of our lack of science education as a nation. A bit of critical thinking and a minimal amount of science knowledge is all it takes to debunk such absurd claims.

Additionally, this story has been around for some time, and why it suddenly got revived is beyond me.
