For those of you just tuning in to hear Rachel's Great Big Developing Story, you won't be disappointed. For those of you tuning in because you are dedicated fans and would listen to Rachel read the phone book, you won't be disappointed either. For those of you tuning in because you thought this was the farm report, you will be disappointed. Sorry 'bout that.

Now, pop quiz hot shots, is there any reason not having to see this image in the future would be bad?

Answer: Yes. And the reason is today's Underbelly story. Every day on The Rachel Maddow Show we poke a sharp stick at the soft white Underbelly of the right wing scheme machine. Take a peek at their political playbook to better understand their efforts to privatize, pave, patronize, and pander our great coutnry into mediocrity, hunger and acquiescence. So here goes...

Yesterday the House took the first step toward dismantling it all together. From page A1 of the Washington Post today:

[T]he subcommittee acted to eliminate within two years all federal money for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting -- which passes federal funds to public broadcasters -- starting with a 25 percent reduction in CPB's budget for next year, from $400 million to $300 million.

In all, the cuts would represent the most drastic cutback of public broadcasting since Congress created the nonprofit CPB in 1967. The CPB funds are particularly important for small TV and radio stations and account for about 15 percent of the public broadcasting industry's total revenue.

A decade ago, Newt Gingrich tried to kill public broadcasting as well – remember all the Save Big Bird rallies? But Rachel thought that the Republican strategy now was not so much to kill it as to take it over.

They installed Kenneth Tomlinson as chair of the corporation for public broadcasting.

Tomlinson has proposed a former RNC co-chair as the next president of the corporation for public broadcasting. They gave the absolutely ridiculous Wall Street Journal Neanderthal Editorial Board on their own show, they cut Bill Moyers show down to a half an hour, there’s been a ton of coverage of how they’ve tried to make it skew right. And there’s been a backlash against that, too.

My theory, and my prediction, is this. The republicans AREN’T trying to get rid of public broadcasting. This is a shot across the bow to scare everyone. To mobilize Big Bird lovers and NPR lovers. To mobilize democrats.

Then a couple of months down the road, after the full committee vote against PBS and after the full house votes against PBS, they’ll unveil some MAGICAL COMPROMISE PLAN to save public broadcasting. And the compromise? In exchange for saving it, the Democrats have to allow even more right wing dominance of the corporation for public broadcasting. And it will be billed as some great practical plan to save big bird. And really, they were never going to kill big bird. They just wanted to use the threat of his death as political leverage to get even more rightwing dominance of the media.

Any bets on which Senators will make up the Gang of 14 to "compromise" on this nuclear option?

Now turn to Rachel's Front Page where she puts all the stories that aren't on the front pages but should be and you will see the shriveled bald head of Jesse Helms. In his new book the southern Republican and former Senator says he wrong about his whole approach to that AIDS thing, but segregation, that one he got right. Why was fighting to preserve a racist, unconstitutional, un-American practice defensible? Integration was forced by "agitators" with an agenda. Yeah, Jesse, that agenda was equality.

Yesterday I asked Dr. Maddow why, when they were constantly changing the rules to fit their agenda, those in the Bush Administration hadn't lowered the recruitment numbers even lower than they did last month so they could nominally achieve their doctored goals. We were a bit stumped on this one. But then today arrived with the answer in tow. How is Bush getting around this enormous failure? By changing the rules of course!

The Army and Marine Corps will no longer announce their monthly recruiting numbers at the beginning of each month. Instead, the Defense Department will approve the release of recruiting statistics for all four services.

WASHINGTON - As the war in Iraq drags on, President Bush's job approval and the public's confidence in the direction he's taking the nation are at their lowest levels since The Associated Press-Ipsos poll began in December 2003.

About one-third of adults, 35 percent, said they think the country is headed in the right direction, while 43 percent said they approve of the job being done by Bush. Just 41 percent say they support his handling of the war, also a low-water mark.

"There's a bad mood in the country, people are out of sorts," said presidential scholar and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution Charles Jones, who lives near Charlottesville, Va. "Iraq news is daily bad news. The election in Iraq helped some, and the formation of the government helped some, but dead bodies trump the more positive news."

California retiree Carol Harvie was quick to mention Iraq when asked about how Bush was doing his job.

"I don't think he's read his history enough about different countries and foreign affairs," said Harvie, a political independent who lives near San Diego, a region with several military bases. "Anything they try to do in Iraq has spelled trouble. I think he bit off more than he can chew."

Car bombings and attacks by insurgents killed 80 U.S. troops and more than 700 Iraqis last month and Pentagon officials acknowledge the level of violence is about the same as a year ago, when they were forced to scrap a plan to substantially reduce the U.S. troop presence in Iraq.

Bush administration officials say the key to getting U.S. forces out of Iraq is training Iraqis to provide their own security.

While Bush has gotten generally low scores for his handling of domestic issues for many months, most Americans have been supportive of his foreign policy. Not any more.

The poll conducted for AP by Ipsos found 45 percent support Bush's foreign policy, down from 52 percent in March... full story:

Everything for them is a plan. The Conservatives consider politics a constant chessgame. Everything is an aggressive move for control against an opponent. So when there's not a war on, they declare one to distract the civilian population(non neocons), and divide and conquer.
Gotta stay a step ahead of the stormtroopers by following their single-minded path of cultural destruction via least resistance...Rachel got that one right...friggin crazy about PBS. water always flows to the lowest-point; republican "investment war-bonds" money to the weakest point in the chain. And man, I didn't realize the NOW-Moyers half-hour unnessessary surgery. NOW was an hour!!! Geez.

On Saving Big Bird

Tsk. Tsk. Why all this effort to destroy things for the sake of privitizing everything in America? Well, it started with Reagan, not Gingrich. And it started in the 1980s, not during the Vietnam War, when Reagan ruled California and he was the biggest tax-hiker there in history and a big Federal Government was good for the war. No, the 1980s glorified tax cuts and somehow this was a great idea to Americans who simply didn't want to pay more taxes for stuff they get (how much are you paying now, fellow Americans? it costs a whole lot for that electricity feed into your average trailer park, eh?).

If Reagan ever said anything I agree with, it's that the problem is ideology. He didn't practice what he preached either. He released the ideologues for capitalism foaming and frothing at the mouth. Our fearless leader Howard Dean has pointed this out: "...in medicine, when a theory doesn't work, you obviously don't want continue to use it or the patient dies; in politics, when the theories don't work, these ideologues continue to use the bad theories" (or words to that effect; sorry Howard).

You want the source for this twisted ideology? I'll give you the source: The Libertarian Party and its so-called Chicago School of Economics. Come on all you faux hipsters out there who think Libertarians are cool because they don't pay their taxes and want to legalize pot; Libertarianism is a scam in the name of free enterprise. A lot of money was pumped into the University of Chicago by the Rockefeller family to get American fringe thinkers off of Timothy Leary and on to a type of run-amok capitalism that would let that Big-Oil money flow like water over Niagra Falls. No, no, no. That money doesn't trickle down and Big Oil, for all its accomplishments, is a tricky bunch who would just as soon screw you out of your next paycheck so they can buy another private jet. Libertarianism is a front for a whole lot of bad people who have carved away a lot of good things that our government used to do and its fanatic followers have lots and lots of carving yet to come. They are the ideological brain for the Neo-Cons and the all those Republicans who like to go outside the dots and do constructive things like impeaching Clinton or shutting down government. They will pluck poor Big Bird and serve him up for Thanksgiving. This is not what America is about.

Moazzam Begg was held at Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan before being detained for three years at Guantanamo Bay. He was interviewed on the BBC on Wednesday and, trust me, this interview is NOT TO BE MISSED, especially if you heard Moazzam's father, Azmat Begg, speaking on Unfiltered. The dignity and level-headedness of this intelligent and articulate man are astonishing, though perhaps not so surprising if you remember his father.

As with most BBC programmes, this one will only be available online for a week. It was first aired two days ago so you have FIVE DAYS left to hear it.

(Suggestion? when you mention the miners' demonstrations (& the death of a miner, Juan Coro, yesterday in the march to the capital, Sucre), it's less ambiguous to use "mineworker" instead of "miner", which can be heard as "minor.")

I hope you'll continue to watch Latin America; our Secy of State got her hands slapped at the OAS a few days ago, and several countries are asserting their independence from the U.S.

I assume our administration is figuring out how to show its displeasure.

Congrats Rachel on your upcoming guest spots! You are going to do well, just like you did this morning on CNN. It was nice to see that you had more coherent sentences and complete ideas than the Republican analyst did.

I have been unable to listen to today’s show as of yet, so if I am repeating something that was already said, please ignore it. For most children PBS is the foundation of learning. Knowing that the right-wing, as stated on this show just a few days ago, have started the creation of high school Conservative groups and wanting to regulate the amount of “liberal-bias” in schools (Early school- College), doesn’t it seem reasonable that they are trying to control the thinking/mental development of kids by starting them off young and controlling the sources of education? Also isn’t it funny that the right-wing is trying to do exactly what they are accusing liberals of doing? I am sure that both of these statements do not come as a complete surprise to most of us and these are probably both obvious statements, but I thought that it had to be said. Thanks, and keep on spreading the word.

Congrats Rachel

Even though I've stayed off the blog until now I'm a huge fan. Rachel is the smartest person on Air America and my first choice to stand up to a wingnut on TV.

But, here's a serious question. Some of the shows that feature left wing regulars are set up to prove that the left is wrong. The worst example is Hannity & Colmes. Poor Alan Colmes looks like the team that has to play the Harlem Globetrotters every night. You just know you're always going to lose. I don't know if Colmes just doesn't understand or if he's really "Tokyo Rose" pretending to be a liberal and planning all along to lose the argument.

With that kind of stuff going on, how do you make sure that you're really going to get a fair shake? If being 10 times as smart as Tucker Carlson is all it takes then it shouldn't be a problem. Rachel also talked about not looking like everybody else on TV. That's great. The serious question is, how do you make sure that you're not being set up for an audience who would think that Ann Coulter is right and Rachel Maddow is wrong based just on the way they look?

This reads a little like a troll and it really isn't. Maybe the right wing games have made me a little paranoid.

Ann Coulter = a whore who wears too much make-up. Most of which has obviously made its way into her brain cells.

Rachel Maddow = a natural beauty with big brains and a better radio/television voice.

Of course I'm biased. And some NASCAR fan in Kentucky (no offense to Kentucky) is likely to enjoy the whored up look accompanied with the disrespectful verbal spew Coulter is known for. Give me a good looking woman with brains in a button up shirt over that fake crap any day of the week!

I don't think it's a question of looks and what the audience prefers. Aside of the fact I just proved Rachel is far better looking than Coulter... it's about being genuine and professional. Coulter doesn't even know the definition of those.

I agree with you, but I know that you and I aren't the target audience for a show on Faux News. You'd have to tie me to the chair to get me to listen to Coulter for more than 30 seconds. I'm just not sure what the target audience is for a Tucker Carlson show on MSNBC.

Maybe it's just my suspicious nature. My first reaction this morning is I thought it was great news but then I started to wonder if just possibly I smelled a rat. Maybe the only way to find out is you give it a shot and see what happens.

Don't worry TodB, Rachel will rock da house. I've watch 'those' kinds of shows enough, and you're correct, the liberal is usually 1) not that smart, and 2) not that liberal. As you know, Rachel is the Smartest Liberal Talking Head There Is, and I've never seen her perform poorly when standing up for our side. I'm predicting she will be the shining star of the show, and before long they'll be calling it "The Situation With Rachel Maddow".

As far as the lesbian/mannish looks thing, I think the MSNBC audience will get over it quickly once she starts talking. Her look will only come into play when the show hits it big, SNL will do a parody and Seth Myers will play Rachel.

Being a NC-ian and loving my state....I do...it ain't Kansas y'know!....I have to say that the only consolation about having Helms represent my state was that Strom Thurman of SC was worse. Helms' views on civil rights were/are not realistic and show a lack of thinking things through as well as any kind of empathy. Even his seeming reversal on AIDS shows an appallingly closed mind.....like I'll worry about it 'cause it might hit MY kind! If not....let 'em die.

I hope, like with Strom, when Jesse dies, no one will care or mourn, but sigh a sigh of relief....just like they did with Strom.

Now we have Lipstick Libby....the Phantom Stepford Senator. Just terrible! NC is so scitzoid! There are some great things here but it teeters on the edge of becoming a truely great state.
