Rampage At Fort Hood: Should We Be Surprised?

"It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."

The president said that after the shooting at Fort Hood. It was the worst documented mass shooting at a stateside U.S. military base in the history of our nation. It was indeed horrifying. But do you want to know what is also horrifying? (You know I’m going to tell you regardless, right?)

The very same president (ever the enthusiastic one about war in Afghanistan) is entertaining the possibility of placing more troops in harm’s way in Afghanistan where the shooter believed he was to be deployed—a place that has never been conquered, and that no longer signifies in the way it did when we first retaliated for the attacks on September 11, 2001.

What does success look like in Afghanistan? Is it a grainy video of Osama bin Laden’s corpse hanging naked with happy locals doing vulgar things to it? Does it look like a thinly veiled international drug cartel masquerading as a U.S.-funded puppet government? No one knows what it looks like. Not even Obama. And that’s why we shouldn’t be sending more troops there.

The shooter responsible for the tragedy at Fort Hood was a doctor named Nidal Malik Hasan. He is about my age, and I know that offers scant reason to identify, but I can’t help but try on his shoes while the vast right-wing nut factory starts churning out theories about the man with the Muslim name (just like Barack “Osama”) who hates America (just like Barack Hussein Obama).  Okay I tried them on, and yes we’re talking about a crazy person—a guy who snapped. Regardless, I bet Hasan and I agree about a few things. For instance, the re-deployment of a soldier, over and over and over, regardless of his or her mental health, is immoral and just plain crazy. I bet we also agree that what happens to these young women and men over there is horrific and—given the futility of the fight—ludicrous to the point of institutionalized cruelty.

I can also identify with the abject terror Hasan must have felt when he was apprised of the fact that he would be deployed to the place that wrecked so many of his patients. I remember when Desert Storm was brewing and we all thought we’d get conscripted and sent to Iraq (for the Bush family’s friends in Kuwait) back in 1991. It was scary. Imagine how much worse it would be if your job was to listen to people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who had just returned from the place you were going?

While you stew in the sadness and overarching tragedy here, try to imagine what could cause a man to do such a thing. It was the act of an insane person. Sure. How did he get that way?  He was on psychiatric clean-up duty. He knew where he was going, and he was terrified. Perhaps that terror expressed itself as an anti-war sentiment, or as a Stockholm Syndrome-esque empathy for the enemy. If you knew the horrors of war firsthand chances are a creeping pacifism would start to set up camp in your heart.

Because the military is the place for religious extremists prone to violence.

Political correctness kills. Bin Laden could have been killed years ago, but hey, there might be collateral damage. Is the armys al-queda quota filled yet?
I think liberals would not want to be drafted because they dont want to impose on other countries. I dont mind imposing on those that want to kill us, but I wouldnt want to fight in a PC war. I might be speaking Japanese if you guys were around back then.

Bush's wars in Iraq and Afganistan are now the "Liberals fault too"?? I knew this was coming after Bush left two war to Obama and I don't agree with sending troops in to either country, not one more troop period!. Wilson originally helped the Afganistan people win over the Russian invasion back then with secret weapons money from Congress on the sly.. Why are we there at all? The "Liberals" didn't attack us, neither did the Democrats, rather it was the GOP republican president who failed to protect this country and he had warnings, Bush began this nonsense. The waste of American soldiers lives and the shriveling up of our national security from this added blunder by a foolish president caused the armed services such a shortage of men. That shortage made them so in need of 'any body that can fight is allowed in" is to blame and that has nohing to do with Liberals who want NO WAR, period or any "Muslim threat from within"!
Not "liberals", not the ACLU and not the Democrats have anything to do with the policies that Bush created that began either of these wars. Sometimes facts are facts and these are the facts. Obviously the man who did this is ill, and a person doesn't have to be in combat to get PTSD, this isn't about Muslims or Liberals or the ACLU, it's a Republican began, republican mentality that caused this and began the whole train wreck to this tragedy at Fort Hood. If there is blame it's in the policy maker ( Bush and the GOP)and at that time it was Bush and his minions and it still is. Obama needs to get us out, period, but let's not forget who began this tragedy that ended in the horror of Ft Hood.

Bush promised no nation-building. Remember? We were not even supposed to fight the Taliban. We were only after Al Qaeda training camps and Bin Laden. Now we are only going to repeat what happened after we put the Shah in power in Iran. Remember the Iranian revolution and the hostage crisis? How much time does Karzai have? You want to put money on that? I'll say he's got two years after we leave Afghanistan before he's living in exile in France or Florida.

This Islamic Terrorist apparently had anti-American, pro-Islamic terrorist internet posts and even publically defended the tactics of homocide bombers.

Why was he still in the Army?

That's an EASY one to answer. We can thank the politically correct liberals and the ACLU. Had any of his supervisors taken steps to remove him, the would almost certainly have been called bigots and subject to disciplinary action because of their "intolerant" views on the Islam. The ACLU would have sued just as they did with the "flying Imams" (by the way, US Air was forced to settle with those Islamists as well, even though it was the other passengers who feared for their own safety).

1. If anyone (meaning YOU) think that by suggesting one "clicks" on a link in this new AA format is "LITERAL"...then it is YOU who are in need of a very looooong rest!

2. Not everyone has all of the Malware they may need and judging from your temperament, comments and general demeanor; EVERYONE is in need of far more protection then they may currently possess.

So let it be here and now that I declare to everyone who may want to use one of your LINKS...they had better be well prepared for all kinds of horrors.

3. Your continued irrational posts that accuse others of all sorts of things, are just plain loooooney tunes. The idea that ANYONE should use any of your links or information is not only incredibly silly and dangerous, but it makes one reconsider their connection to reality.

As far as NBC goes: I find it amazing that you or any of your right wing wacko cohorts would even THINK of comparing NBC to what FOX offers the GOP. Are you truly serious? DO you actually have a connection to reality or are you really simply another one of those incredibly common (and cheap) PAID PER POST TROLLS that we see all too often? I think we all know the answers here...

Golly, can you get paid if people don't actually mention your online ID?

#50 & 51, Polly and capt-First Polly, you don't 'click' on my links, you copy and paste. Second, IF there was malware attached, you're malware/virus software would block it. Third, if you're SO afraid of reading something posted by me, read the links source...NBC Chicago. Why don't you just do a google search on the article? What is REALLY germane here, is that you don't want to read an article that slams your messiah...especially since it comes from NBC....informally known as the Obama Network. You and Capt can continue the "head in the sand", (or where ever) attitude, but the fact that you even post your ignorance is telling...quite telling.

The idea that I (or anyone) would click on a link that YOU provided is astonishingly C R A Z Y ! With the amount of venom you emit with each and every breath; I wouldn't be surprised in the least that you would put up a link to some sort of wretched MALWARE or WORM Central for us lefty's to click on.

Do you actually think that people in here could or would ever take your links seriously (well except for your far right wing buddies)?

Do you? Perhaps you don't realize how others view your tiny little, nasty and petty ad hominem's, but if you truly believe that any of us will EVER click on a link provided by you, then I believe you are sorely lost forever in lala-land.

The Fort Hood shooter is emblematic of what we are doing to an entire generation - not only in this country, but around the world. We think we're so brave, we bomb from drones, we excell as military gamers, but the truth is, we're all experiencing a certain amount of PTSD, whether it's the emotional numbing, the depression, the short tempers with our loved ones.... we're traumatizing the world with our unending war. When will it stop?

The ideology of "Live by the sword, Die by the sword" ha NEVER had soooo much meaning as this! I am - by the grace of GOD - a PEACE-MONGER! Enough with these b.s. wars. WWII was the LAST war that should have EVER been fought. If you don't evolve, YOU will get left behind.

Your dictionary must be quite different from any that I have ever consulted. The actions of a gunman shooting scores of unarmed individuals in a premeditated and carefully planned surprise attack DOES NOT constitute anything that could reasonably be described as "creeping pacifism". Pacifism is a deep-seated belief in non-violence. Overwhelming fear for one's own personal safety is more properly described by other terms. PACIFISTS ARE BY DEFINITION NON-VIOLENT. Whatever the motives of this gunman may have been, I can assure you that pacifism was not among them. Oh, and by the way, our military is NOT conscripted. Those unwilling to risk personal injury have no business enlisting, particulary in times of war. And to all those brave men and women who willing place themselves in harm's way to serve our country, MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE. Your countrymen appreciate your sacrifices and pray for you and your families every day.

You hear alot of people complain about the President by putting him down and saying he doesn't care about the soldiers that are deployed to OIF and OEF because he's taking his time making a decision, believe me when I say "By him taking his time, shows me he does care". Just remember lives are at stake here, regardless if we send in more soldiers. The last administration has made too many wrong choices and over 4,000 of our brothers and sisters have paid the ultimate price. We are fighting this War with a totally different set of rules, and by that I mean, "The enemy doesn't have any". And hear people say "Yes the surge worked", let me tell you "NO it didn't, believe me", I was part of the "SURGE"

Now that more 'facts/stories' have emerged, I would like to say that I was in no way condoning Hasan's actions or making excuses for him. One source(HufffPost) has an in-depth interview with a Muslim convert who was acquainted with the Hasan. Very interesting reading. It seems that Mr. Hasan was very rigid in his beliefs and did not like it when others had a different opinion than he held, especially refarding Islam. It reminds me of some of my Conservative co-workers spouting Faux talking points as fact. I know I'm no expert on anything, but I do try to hear both side of a disagreement. There are some people who refuse to even entertain the thought that they have been fooled. I know that the door swings both ways. I apologize for jumping on the anti-Bush bandwagon in my earlier post. The fact remains that there are people out there who are quite capable of repeating this horrific phenomenon. This is why I believe that the news should be the news, and not something to be twisted to form fear and hatred in the minds of listeners/viewers.

The title of the article asks "should we be surprised". No, war is a cancer and corrupts many lives, there may be a million untold stories and every once in a while some person will break out in violence.

A theological thought: I think the devil just dances in triumph for every war. And especially has good laugh when each claims that god is on their side!

40.
pennylane100

This is the most insane article I have ever read, of course we should be surprised. This guy, who I understand was born in America, enlisted in the military, presumably to serve his country. When he did not like the cause his country asked him to fight for, he did what any religious nut would do, he killed as many innocent men and women as he could.

I do not support the war in Afghanistan but I did not volunteer to join the military. He could have taken the honorable way out and declared himself to be a conscientious objector, but religious fanatics rarely take the honorable. way out.

However bad our policy is in Afghanistan (and it is bad) we still have a right be surprised and horrified when one of our citizens goes berzerk slaughters dozens of his colleagues.

He was HIGHLY educated. He had to have at LEAST a Masters degree, and be licensed as physician. That's why psychiatrists ARE psychiatrists, and not psychologists.

He was UTTERLY incapable of getting out over a period of YEARS, going back to 9/11?

I don't believe it.

The Fort Hood massacre is in no way to be exploited by any Wingers. Why a policy is in place whereby hardly any soldier has arms is ignorant first and led to this maniac having a field day. After 9/11 this is pure arrrogance on our leadership from the top down. And forget any self-appointed righteousness, this was a madman Muslim, doing for his evil Allah what is becoming commonplace, turning on your own so-called Brothers. He already had a bad report from his last station and through his Koran prayers and the Koran's he gave away before this bloody deed, he turned into a devilish monster, albeit not unexpected from those who know about that ludicrous martydom that is craved by the minions that follow lunacy. That last statement also applies to those in Christendom who follow lock-step in killing for some ancient middle eastern God.
It is no secret what his true agenda was, and it wasn't what any Winger's seem to want to allow. Forget political correctness, this is just one of many horrific acts that have been and will be perpetuated on American soil by extreme religious fanatics.
Where was M.I ? Where was the C.I.A.? This madman had a past to be concerned about and a religous belief to match it.
I voted for Obama to get rid of Bush and Cheney and to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Sending more troops into those was zones is just begging to get more of our fellow american's killed. It is so simple, put them in an invisible harms way and
thye haven't a chance regardless of advanced technology. Just choose a side and fight from our strength, from the skies.
My second thought is that Obama is now caught up in how ending the conflicts will cause the economy to really crash. Yes, much of our economy is dependent on our Military Industrial Complex (Remember what Ike told us), (Remember what General Smedley Butler warned usa about).
Being nice to those who would light us up at any given opportunity is nonsense and wrong. Just ask those poor subjects who recently suffered in Bombay.
That being said, how easy would it have been for a dozen or so Muslim lunatics to have attacked the base or have another in mind? It is unconsciable to think that our security is so lax that we failed again to stop a wicked abnormal religious based attack. We did the dirty deed in WW2 by incarcerating the Japanese after Pearl Harbor. Most of those people were not for Hero ito or Tojo and The Land of the Rising Sun, they were good American's. For National Security reasons at home, we
have a much greater threat to our well-being and lives and therefore, we must acknowledge that fact and act quickly and responsibly, something that isn't being done at our military bases. Shame, shame.

@voltar

What's this "Dear Leader" stuff? Since Day 1 of his Administration, President Obama has reached out to the Republican Party seeking consensus on ANY issue. He waterted down several of his First Hundred Days initiatives seeking Republican support, but except for Senator Snow and the other senator from Maine whose name escapes me right now, he has gotten a great big goose egg in terms of give and take. Yet you on the right have the gall to accuse him of being a socialist, of wanting to kill grandma (Senator Grassley's compliment, right after Obama had praised him), of wanting to eliminate capitalism, of wanting to control everything, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.

In contrast to President Obama, the previous occupant of the Oval Office (whose name I will not even utter), who won his first election with a plurality, treated the Democrats as if they did not exist. After 9/11, there was a short period in which he seemed to be changing that approach, but within 60 days of that event his strategists counseled him to return to slash-and-burn governance. He raped the US Constitution, spying on american citizens without warrants, and torturing detainees of America. He attempted a coup on a sick Attorney General, seeking that officer's "approval" that his unconstitutional acts were constitutional. And his Administration outed a covert operative, causing who knows how much damage to our intelligence community's sources and methods (one thing's for sure, there is no doubt in the world now that the USG employs family members of diplomats in covert roles, placing ALL family of diplomats in danger the world over regardless of their status). And he created a scare regime that took us into a war of choice intended to turn over the world's third largest oil reserves to multinational corporations. Nearly 5,000 of our troops paid the ultimate price and tens of thousands more have had their lives destroyed by the former president's acts.

In short, Voltar, if anyone deserves the title of "Dear Leader" (calling up visions of a North Korean dictator) it is the occupant of the Oval Office from January 2001 to January 2009.

I would just like to say that ALL of you people need to clue in on what life is really about. All I'm hearing is a constant flow of ignorance from both sides. If you people would re-read (or probably read for the first time) what George Washington refers to as "factions" in his farewell address, you might actually learn something about the true nature of our country. It's not about liberal or conservtive, it's about not dividing this country over labels that seem to mean nothing to the average individual who isn't rich. You people need to turn your passion and enthusiam towards more constructive endeavors instead of just bantering back and forth like four-year olds.

Voltar, Hasan was not 'handing out Korans", he gave ONE(probably his own copy) to his neighbor as well as some frozen food, an air mattress, etc. Giving away things is a sure sign of a planned suicide and/or murderous rampage. None of us know WHY he made this horrific decision. Perhaps if he survives, we will find out, but I doubt it. The man was/is mentally ill, no doubt about it. Shrinks are the LAST ones to seek help for themselves, especially in the military. It's a career-ender but it shouldn't be. It appears the poor guy was lonely and isolated and had suffered considerable discrimination and/or harassment after 9/11, probably from the very soldiers he was trying to help. Why must you attribute every unfortunate happening to President Obama? I am a Desert Storm veteran and a former active duty member as well as a reservist. Although I was angry over the 2000 election fiasco, I fully supported W. Bush after 9/11, up until he started blathering about Iraq. He, Rovie and Cheney destroyed their own credibility the more they trashed the Constitution. President Obama has been the target of hatred by many so-called Americans. By the way, did YOU serve, Pallie(voltar)?

30.

I am not the least bit surprised by this shooting. Our government finances and turns a blind eye to the genocide of Palestinians by the Israelis and this shooter was a Palestinian born American. Until America stops supporting Israel and many other terrorist governments around the globe and starts minding her own business, these attacks will continue. Lets bring all of our troops home from around the world and stop wasting our tax dollars trying to rule the world. But of course the so-called "conservatives" will never support ending the waste of our tax dollars as long as they are being spent on death.

I didn't say I hate Bush from his first day in office.

It took a needless war in Iraq, doctoring intelligence, violating the constitution, outing a CIA officer, putting clueless people in positions they didn't belong (heck of a job Brownie), and more before I got around to hating every fiber of Bush's being.

This hatred of Obama from the right is just sour grapes.

28.

Just one more quick comment about liberals screaming I hate bush for 8 years.
Actually, it wasn't that long. It didn't really begin until he and cheney were heavily into the war (illegal) and based on lies (WMDs) and the abysmal response with too few troops, abandoning Afghanistan in the haste ot invade Iraq, destroying civil liberties, sponsoring torture and rendition (the latter still not stopped), and a few dozen other things. We had reason to hate bush. He was destroying this country and we're still trying to pick up the pieces and fix the economy and figure out how to end the wars that have made most of the Middle East hate us.
Obama restored respect to the office of the President, here and internationally.

b) A white male who blew up a gay bath house on Judy Garland's B-day

How many nanoseconds would you people declare this person a right wing religious fanatic and blame the whole thing on Bush/Limbaugh/Palin/Beck?

This guy handed out Korans the day of the attack and screamed "Allahu Akbar" as he opened fire, and we're supposed to think he has Pre-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder???

The media have ignored the most obvious explanation for the shootings. As as a psychiatrist, Hasan would have heard horrific confessions of brutality, sexual violence, and torture. Day after day of this, and having to pretend to like these men, might easily convince him his psychotic patients should be exterminated.

In one news report he said he believed that killing these soldiers would save the lives of many children. That is obviously so. Motivated by racism and patriotism, most Americans put no value of the lives of Afghan and Iraqi children, but some people, including Dr. Hasan do.

Again, in the name of Alah! We have committed grave sins against the Muslim people and we dont even know it. They will fight to the bloody death as long as we are occupiers. As long as we are trying to change their moral character. Leave them all alone. Protect Israel. Get out of their nations and keep them contained. Anything else will continue the Jihad. This incident clearly is about an American devout Muslim being torn apart between his faith (and the politics of faith) and his military duty. Yes he snapped but one could say that about every suicide bomber. We cant relate to them because we think differently. Leave them alone. Get out of their nations now and try and contain them.
