Feingold Censure Call Echoes
News:
The fallout from Wisconsin Senator Russell Feingold’s call to censure President Bush continues, and looks as if it may figure prominently in the upcoming midterm campaigns. Predictably, Republicans are attacking the messenger rather than his message, denouncing Feingold as an opportunist who seeks to set the stage for a run at the Oval Office in 2008. And the Democrats? They’re being called out by Feingold himself for lacking the conviction to back their words with action.
It's about time...
It's about time that someone on the left side of the aisle grew a backbone. It seems that so far, only Feingold and Conyers fail to fall into the category of invertebrates.
Hopefully though, this will start a trend. Sometimes, peer pressure is a good thing.

There was a law to deal with procuring warrants for wiretapping.
pResident Bush found the law inconvenient, and chose to ignore it, even as he assured the American people that warrants were always being secured for wiretapping.

Regarding the NSA wiretapping, the President had the choice of working within the framework of the FISA law, or ignoring the law. He chose to ignore it.
Regarding the levees in New Orleans, the same Corps of Engineers now claims that their repairs will hold, even though two independent teams of engineers, including as team from the National Science Foundation, say they won't. Even the American Society of Civil Engineers doesn't think the levees are being correctly repaired by the Corps of Engineers.
As for your "over 3K hours of tapes and over 48K of documents", bring it on. Please. I'm BEGGING you. I would LOVE to see this administration try to justify their illegal activities. Just like you, it will give me some comic relief.

Fact: The FISA law, or Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act was created in 1978. It provides the President with a method for conducting surveillance on U.S. citizens who are believed to be acting as an agent of a foreign entity, by getting warrants for such surveillance through a secret court. Everything President Bush claimed he wanted to do with the NSA wiretapping program, he could have done within the framework of the FISA law. He chose instead to operate outside this law. This is not conjecture, this is not opinion, this is a fact.
Fact: The principal justification for the U.S. war in Iraq (i.e. the invasion of a sovereign nation) was that the regime in power in Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), the capability of producing more WMDs, and the desire to acquire nuclear (not pronounced NUKE-U-LAR) weapons. The UN weapons inspectors had, up to the point of the U.S. invading Iraq, found NO EVIDENCE of WMDs. After the invasion, the U.S. inspection teams found NO EVIDENCE of WMDs. Moreover, this pre-emptive war was, in general, and our unannounced "first strike", prior to the deadline that we had set, was, specifically, a violation of International law and a breach of the U.N. charter. This is not conjecture, this is not opinion, this is a fact.
Fact: Divulging the identity of a covert agent is a violation of federal law. The CIA has conceded that Valerie Plame was covert. The reporters in question have conceded their sources were within the administration. No matter how you slice it, someone in this administration outed Valerie Plame, a covert agent. You're citing section 1811 of FISA. Great. That means you read it. Which also means you're knowingly ommiting some very important words that blow your case: "a declaration of war by the Congress."
For those interested, here's the WHOLE section that JPN is citing:
"Notwithstanding any other law, the President, through the Attorney General, may authorize electronic surveillance without a court order under this subchapter to acquire foreign intelligence information for a period not to exceed fifteen calendar days following a declaration of war by the Congress."
Congress never declared war. You know it. I know it. And Bush knows it. It's funny though... not even the administration is using the argument you tried to get away with here. Guess you didn't read this week's right-wing-nutjob talking points.
In the future JPN, you might want to consider that when I cite a law, I might actually have read the law. Unlike the righties, we liberals don't follow the philosophy of "never let the facts get in the way".

Plame's covert status has been cited in several places, and was confirmed by a ruling of the Judge in the investigation. Here's an excerpt from a Newsweek article:
"special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald found that Plame had indeed done "covert work overseas" on counterproliferation matters in the past five years, and the CIA "was making specific efforts to conceal" her identity, according to newly released portions of a judge's opinion. (A CIA spokesman at the time is quoted as saying Plame was "unlikely" to take further trips overseas, though.) Fitzgerald concluded he could not charge Libby for violating a 1982 law banning the outing of a covert CIA agent; apparently he lacked proof Libby was aware of her covert status when he talked about her three times with New York Times reporter Judith Miller. Fitzgerald did consider charging Libby with violating the so-called Espionage Act, which prohibits the disclosure of "national defense information," the papers show; he ended up indicting Libby for lying about when and from whom he learned about Plame."

What is most interesting to me is that the press gives this little bunch of people who are protesting with Cindy so much air time without discussing Cindy's background. This is a case of more press bias. It has been pointed out on just a couple of media outlets that Cindy divorced her first husband and left her son with him to be raised while she became a political activist for the Democratic Party. She had very little to do with her son in his growing years. She remarried. The 1st husband remarried. The original father raised the son with his new wife. They miss their son and mourn the loss of his life. They have stated that they are very proud of their son and that they agree with the stance of America in Iraq and on terror. They said that their son was eager to serve and to go fight the terrorists in Iraq.
He volunteered. How many news stations carried their interview? Not many.
So the son dies in Iraq and then Cindy shows up to make a stink. She gets an audience with Bush. That was not enough. She goes to Crawford and demands another audience. How many news stations carry the ongoing saga of Cindy? Practically all of them. Cindy didn't care about her son. She let another woman raise him. Cindy doesn't care about the other soldiers in Iraq. Cindy cares about her liberal, feminist agenda and about using the death of her son to lobby against Republicans and Bush. And the press is helping her. Why?
Then 2 days ago, Cindy's 2nd husband filed for a divorce from Cindy. Cindy sounds like a feminist opportunist who did not have the sense of responsibility to even raise her own son. It looks like her 2nd husband is fed up with Cindy. We middle Americans should be fed up with Cindy also. We should be fed up with the press. They manipulate us into their "group think" and into the responses that they want on their polls.
