News:
The news just gets worse for bribe-friendly members of Congress, already skittish over the secrets convicted felon Jack Abramoff may be letting slip in an attempt to gain leniency. Tony Rudy, a former top aide to Rep. Tom DeLay, pled guilty today to conspiring with Abramoff to block legislation in exchange for cash, and as part of his plea agreement, Rudy has agreed to cooperate with investigators in their ongoing probe of lobby fraud on Capitol Hill. Rudy admitted to accepting payments from Abramoff in 2000—one year before he resigned as DeLay’s deputy chief of staff—to help scuttle an internet gambling bill that didn’t favor some of the lobbyist’s clients. Hardly a development that favors embattled former House speaker DeLay, who faces his own legal troubles in Texas.

Quote of our time !!
Quote from Bill Moyers, former assistant to President Johnson and PBS journalist
"One of the biggest changes in politics in my lifetime is that the delusional is no longer marginal. It has come in from the fringe, to sit in the seat of power in the Oval Office and in Congress. For the first time in our history, ideology and theology hold a monopoly of power in Washington."
Theology asserts propositions that cannot be proven true; ideologues hold stoutly to a worldview despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality. When ideology and theology couple, their offspring are not always bad but they are always blind. And there is the danger: voters and politicians alike, oblivious to the facts.

Capitalism is to be SUBSERVIENT to Democracy--not vice versa
A century ago Theodore Roosevelt said the central fact of his time was that corporations had become so dominant they would chew up democracy and spit it out. His cousin Franklin Roosevelt warned that a government of money was as much to be feared as a government by mob. One was a progressive Republican, the other a liberal Democrat. Their sentiments were echoed by an icon of the conservative movement, Barry Goldwater, in 1987:
The fact that liberty depended on honest elections was of the utmost importance to the patriots who founded our nation and wrote the Constitution. They knew that corruption destroyed the prime requisite of Constitutional liberty, an independent legislature free from any influence other than that of the people…representative government assumes that elections will be controlled by the citizenry at large, not by those who give the most money. Electors must believe their vote counts. Elected officials must owe their allegiance to the people, not to their own wealth or to the wealth of interest groups who speak only for the selfish fringes of the whole community.

It sounds like Delay had better have hung on to his bug control equipment. He might have to go back to working for a living. It would be most excellent if he had to cop a plea somewhere down the line. Can you imagine how much he knows about all the corruption?

Europe is capitalist, and it is now following the US model
The economics of the countires in europe is based on capitalism.
Yes they are capitalists..
They may have more of a social safety net than the US does, because the capitalist classes there had to give in to the workers struggles, because they wanted to show the workers of Europe, that they could have capitalism, with some social safety nets thrown in if they did not revolt, and become socialistic themselves.
But now that socialism has been over thrown in Europe the capitalist class there can start desolving this social safety net. Not all at once of course, but a little at a time, so they don't get too mucj resistance that way.
The European capitalists now also have to compete with the rest of the capitalists, around the world, so they can also undo labor laws, and deminish health care because of the global competiton of capital.
They say they must do this in order to compete with the slave wages elsewhere.
Also there is an over production taking place.
Remember when you hear the words that "production is up."
In capitalist terms that means that more things are being produced by less people who work harder for less money.
Thereare too many of these things in supply because, many people cannot afford to but what is being produced. because of the spiraling down of wages, and living standards.
This is taking place world wide, and not just in Europe.
So now more people have less money to spend, and so the things that are produced are not being bought as quickly, and so the cycle of lay-offs begin, which leads to further economic depression, and the dwindling of taxes to support the social safety nets.
Unless the wealthy get taxed more for the wealth they are gorging on, which has been created at our expense.
Now in Europe the same thing is happening, the wealthy are being taxed less, so it is the working person who has to pick up for their slack, and this is getting harder to do, because their wages and living standards are decreasing, because of the race to the bottom which is taking place around the world.
Now the capitalist class doesn't care about this because even if most people cannot afford to buy automobles, Computers etc. most people still need other things like food, shelter and clothing, so these people can buy these goods, and of course they can have 1/4 of the population with some sort of upper middle class job,(they need people to slave drive and manage the rest of us) so that can buy
all the other luxury items, which they can now produce for even cheaper labor costs, at a higher profit margin.
The wealthy are getting wealthier...
Thats right...
While most of the rest of us will become paupers.
Yes even in Europe...
McBard--good points. However....
McBard--good points. However....
I believe Western European DEMOCRACIES are stronger than ours and the CITIZENRY will not allow the pendulum to swing as far as it has in USA.
I lived in Germany many, many years. I have friends and relatives there.
The labor Unions are MUCH,MUCH stronger than here.
30-35% of workforce. Like America had in the heyday of the great American middle class of the 60s.
Ofcourse, Reagan declared war on the middle class by crushing PATCO and other Unions.
I just don't think the Europeans are as passive as the american sheeple.
Again, the word "socialist" is misused and misunderstood in America.
Canada & Western Europe have REGULATED capitalism as their economic system of choice; NOT Marxist socialism as Cons contend. And it operates SUBSERVIENT to their strong political DEMOCRACY which guides & steers their economy.
Cons hate this. Cons have tried for years to distort & conflate capitalism with political democracy in "pretended equivalence" for decades; they're not. Kevin Phillips in his book, WEALTH & DEMOCRACY makes a strong case for this in his last chapter. Infact, he proves how this "distortion" is the most dangerous trend to our POLITICAL democracy in last 25 years. He says that Washington,Lincoln, both Roosevelts would be apalled at this dangerous development.
In other words, their stronh labor unions STILL ensure a voice or "WorkPlace democracy", unlike in America.
Americans only have "Weekend" democracy; and that's even iffy.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents.
I recommend the book, "The European Dream" by economist Jermy Rifkin.
Very good.
Ofcourse, knucklehead neanderthal Con kool-aid drinkers will just screech, " ahhhhhhhhh commie pinko lefty Rifkin"
But who cares right?
Later
I hope your right
AficaBamba
I hope You're right.
I also have friends andrelatives in Germany, Sweden, and other european countires, and they are talking about how the elites are rolling back health care, by making it more expensive. Raising the retirement age, other social rollbacks, which are done a little at a time,so some don't even get noticed until it's too late. And look what is happening in France with this legislation, where they can fire younger people at will without any reason. I know that there is a strong fight against this, but the capitalist class is insisting on keeping this law in place.
Why is it that the capitalist class controls the policy and dialogue of what should be law and what should not?
Again.. I hope you are right but time will tell.
There again we are just waiting for the roll backs to come.
Working people need to start taking action, by organizing, and coming together, and shutting things down, through general strikes, along with other actions.
United we stand
Divided we are all doomed....
Well it's been nice talking to you, but I have to go to work.
I will not be able to make conversation here for awhile, so adiou, until I get some more time in the future.

WHAT HAS GOP DONE FOR
WHAT HAS GOP DONE FOR WORKERS?
NOW
This is what the Democrats have done!
(Copy and pass it on)
FDR's New Deal programs ( Father of modern liberalism) and other subsequent democratic programs by LBJ and JKF, ie: Social Security; Medicare-Medicaid; Peace
Corps; unemployment insurance; welfare (for the poor and
corporate); civil rights; student grant and loan programs;
safety laws (OSHA); environmental laws; prevailing wage
laws; right to collective bargaining (which brought about
paid medical insurance, paid vacations, pensions, etc.);
workers' compensation; Marshall Plan; flood-disaster
insurance; School Lunch Program; women's rights.
Fair Labor Standards Act, which
established a minimum wage, instituted child labor laws,
and set up time-and-a-half pay for over a 40-hour week.
FHA-HUD with its public housing, urban
renewal and 44 million residential homes (before WWII
almost 70 percent of our nation were renters; by the 1970s
this had been reversed). And farm-conservation
subsidies -- USDA programs, Farmers HomeAdministration (the
bankers didn't want to make rural loans), small
flood-control lakes (more than 3,000 in Oklahoma alone),
rural water districts, rural electricity (REA).
The GI Bill was passed, which the Republicans at the
time bitterly opposed. They were salivating over millions
of returning veterans to hire as cheap labor. More than 8
million have used college benefits, creating millions of
entrepreneurs; most of us had never dreamed of college. For the unemployed GI, there was $20 a week for 52 weeks to help get started (a lot of money in those days). The Veterans Administration provided more than 2 million home loans.
For the bankers , it was pointed
out that the liberals saved their industry with the
creation of FDIC and FSLIC, insuring their deposits, and
saved Wall Street with the establishment of the Securities Exchange Commission.
The oil men came on bended knees to FDR at a time when East Texas oil was 4 cents a barrel and begged him to save their industry. He did; prorationing overturned the rule of capture and the days of flush production were over. Prorating has served this great industry (and nation) well.
Any Republican legislation examples?
I'm sure the republican party has authored one or two comparable bills from time to time, but I can't think of
any, and apparently the Republicans can't either. What it boils down to is this: the liberals dragged Republicans into the 20th century scratching and screaming with their heels in the mud, fighting anything that's progressive, everything that's made this country
great. Republicans have never understood that the
spending power of blue-collar workers, obtained through Democrats and unions, is what really made this country great. Does anyone really believe “The Good Life" was obtained from their own endeavors? They cloak their greed in religion and patriotism, railing against any form of tax, never comprehending that these programs have benefited all of us and our country.
Thanks to all the people who voted for the future of America! Peace.

"Liberalism is trust of the people tempered by prudence. Conservatism is distrust of the people tempered by fear."

take a second and read this ..what ur take
Our country is built on immigrants. Whether they are 1st generation American or had relatives coming over on the Mayflower, most Americans came from another country. Many came legally and many came illegally.
Cubans coming to Florida on tiny boats are offered political asylum and are allowed to stay here legally because our government sees Cuba as this awful place. On the other hand, Mexicans, Gualtemalans, and other Central and South Americans are seen as felons if they try to come to the Land of Opportunity to try and make a little money for their families.
Our country must not look at these immigrants as illegal or legal, this is irrelavant. Our country must look at these immigrants as human beings trying to have a better lives for their families and loved ones. We must not condemn them and label them as felons for they are brave people risking their lives to come to America.
If we open our country up to these people and give them a right to work here then we are helping create a better world. These people only come to America because their native countries don't offer the opportunity that the United States of America does. They are not trying to take their land back or start riots, as some conservatives are saying, they are only trying to make a living and feed their families which is what most Americans are trying to do as well.
These immigrants need to be recognized as a vital part of the American economy and workforce. They need a workers bill of rights and they need someone to stand up for them and demand that they be treated fairly.
Our country would not be the same without them, we need our immigrant population, they are what makes this country so great.
Some Of The Arguments Are -
- and I'm not saying I support them:
1) Illegal immigrant workers displace American workers by allowing employers to pay immigrants artificially low wages and benefits.
2) Citizen taxpayers have to subsidize things like health care and education for immigrant children - which they say immigrant tax dollars don't cover.
3) Why should people who are going thru the immigration process legally be penalized by those who have broken US immigration laws?
4) Maybe Hispanic illegal immigrants have shown no desire to learn English. Many don't have allegiances with the US - they just want good jobs. Their loyalties are to their home countries. These factors not only costs the states money in having to maintain bilingual social systems but create friction within the America population.
5) Illegal workers take out 20 billion dollars annually by sending money home to their relatives.
6) There are concerns about what illegal workers will do if the economy tanks.
And I'm sure that there are more reason against giving them amnesty or creating a guest worker program.
Allowing keep in mind that by adding 11 plus million immigrants will change the political landscape. The children of these immigrants won't by-in-large be low wage workers. They'll become educated, materialistic and bloated like the rest of us.
peace, love, and all that shit...

look there is no and no way, someone ..who on this issue goes with the bush line ..will get it till u walk in their shoes ...ok i have on this one ....u want to eat ....give these people day passes to .work ,crazy simple huh they do it for the k-nooks ....ok ....we all live on earth ....lets work it out with our wonderfull mexican friends ....richaed hydell and wrecked...politics will fu*k it up...
Reasonable reasons...
....so let's see.
1) Illegal immigrant workers displace American workers by allowing employers to pay immigrants artificially low wages and benefits.
THIS IS A LEGITIMATE CONCERN, AND CAN BE ADDRESSED BY A HIGHER FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE. IF EMPLOYERS CAN'T USE MINIMUM OR SUBMINIMUM WAGE AS A CLUB ON THE U.S. WORKING POOR, THEN THEY WILL DO THE JOBS "NO ONE ELSE WILL DO"....THEY'LL DO IT, BUT NOT FOR SHIT WAGES.
2) Citizen taxpayers have to subsidize things like health care and education for immigrant children - which they say immigrant tax dollars don't cover.
THE SALES TAX AS PRIMARY REVENUE RAISER WILL FIX THIS....AS WILL MOTORIST INSURANCE AT THE FUEL PUMP. REMEMBER THAT MOST ILLEGALS ARE PAYING FICA (SOC. SEC.) AND WON'T SEE A NICKEL OF THAT...SEVEN PERCENT OFF THE TOP THAT THE FEDS GET AND WON'T HAVE TO MAKE GOOD ON.
3) Why should people who are going thru the immigration process legally be penalized by those who have broken US immigration laws?
THE ILLEGALS WON'T PENALIZE ANYBODY, THEY CAN'T. ONLY THE GOVERNMENT CAN DO THAT. IMMIGRATION LAW TAKES NEED INTO ACCOUNT IN THE CASE OF POLITICAL ASYLUM AND HARDSHIP. SO THIS IS A LARGER CASE OF HARDSHIP.
4) Maybe Hispanic illegal immigrants have shown no desire to learn English. Many don't have allegiances with the US - they just want good jobs. Their loyalties are to their home countries. These factors not only costs the states money in having to maintain bilingual social systems but create friction within the America population.
I AGREE THAT ENGLISH NEEDS TO BE A REQUIREMENT. THERE NEEDS TO BE SOMETHING THAT BINDS TOGETHER AND IT SHOULDN'T BE RELIGION, CULTURE, POLITICS, OR HISTORY. BUT LANGUAGE IS A VITAL TOOL FOR KEEPING DISCOURSE OPEN AMONG THE GROUPS IN OUR NATION AND WE SHOULD ALL SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE...SINCE MOST OF US ARE ENGLISH SPEAKERS, THE LANGUAGE SHOULD BE ENGLISH.
AS FAR AS LOYALTIES.....LOOK AT ALL THE ETHINIC HOLIDAYS CELEBRATED AND FOODS AVAILABLE IN AMERICA. ARE THE IRISH-AMERICANS DISLOYAL BECAUSE THEY HAVE A ST. PAT'S DAY PARADE, OR THE ITALIANS NOT GOOD AMERICANS BECAUSE OF COLUMBUS DAY? WE HAVE A CHINESE FESTIVAL, SEVERAL BIG JAPANESE HOLIDAYS, FILIPINO COMMEMORATIONS, PLUS ALL THE MAINLAND HAOLE HOLIDAYS. ALL GOOD AMERICANS, ALL GOOD TIMES.
5) Illegal workers take out 20 billion dollars annually by sending money home to their relatives.
AND THOSE RELATIVES SPEND SOME OF THAT ON COCA COLA, TIDE, KOOLAID, CRISCO, ETC...OR THE LOCAL BRAND NAME. AND IF THE MONEY MAKES MEXICO MORE PROSPEROUS, THEN IT WILL REDUCE THE PRESSURE TO IMMIGRATE TO THE US. IT WILL BE CHEAPER TO PRODUCE PROSPERITY IN MEXICO THAN TO TRY TO BLOCK THE BORDER OR SEND ALL THE ILLEGALS BACK. TRUST ME ON THIS.
6) There are concerns about what illegal workers will do if the economy tanks.
THEY HAVE THE OPTION OF GOING HOME. I MIGHT GO WITH THEM.

Bushbaby was standing up for INTERNATIONAL LAW AS PRONOUNCED BY THE UN....No shit. He cited Saddam's supposed flaunting of 17 UN resolutions as reason for sending UN...yes, I said UN forces to unseat him. He claimed that the UN had given HIM the go-ahead to attack Iraq, but was required to get another vote of the Security Council....and when it became clear from their statements that the Council wasn't about to give their approval for military action until the weapons inspectors had another shot at finding the wmds, Bushboner said "Piss on the International community and International law, I'm a-goin' ta invade ennaway....yeee-haw...let dem bunker busters fly!"
So, it was a war to support international law which was started in violation of....international law. Or at least the violation of the will of the organization that issued and administered the international law in question. Hypocrisy at it's most blatant.
