As Contraception Funding Drops, Unwanted Pregnancies Rise

News:
The rate of unwanted pregnancies among low-income American women is on the rise, even as it drops among affluent women, according to a study of government data collected between 1994 and 2001. One of the main causes of the trend, say the authors, is the dwindling federal and state funding for reproductive health programs, and the retasking of the remaining programs to stress abstinence over contraceptive use. One abstinence advocate called programs that taught proper condom use “degrading”.

"why should the government be involved at all?"
Unwanted pregnancies yield citizens of this country which start out with an unusual burden and if a compassionate government dedicated to equal opportunity can be of help in lifting some of that unusual burden, then it should do so FOR IT'S OWN GOOD.

"So the dregs of society can be controlled- that's right- controlled.
And which "dregs" are you talking about.....high school aged female dregs, I presume? Perhaps ones of a duskier shade than yourself? Dregs who live places where the rest of us have pretty much written off investment or opportunity? Those dregs?

"Save them from themselves- save the poor crack children from living in squalor; manage the wellfare /medicaid burden.
And what, if not helping people help themselves, would you have a compassionate government DO? Or is neglect a virtue in your political reality? Seems like it, when you look at the way PUDS spew money on corporate welfare, helping those who most certainly DON'T NEED IT.

"Let's face it, there's a se[g]ment of our population that are poor and that will always be poor because they will not help themselves."
So let's make sure that they don't have children they don't want and who might themselves become part of a permanent underclass.

"They will exploit anything that gives them cash. The Welfare State."
Gimme, gimme, gimme- you OWE me a living..."
What on earth does THIS ramble have to do with ensuring that all people have access to information and materials for birth control and sexual health? Nothing, that's what, unless you think there is some secret cabal of welfare recipients getting rich on birth control. Sheesh, wotta lunkhead.

"Yes they are moralizing the issue. Morally, you should be responsible for your actions."
In my ethical universe, you are also required to mitigate damage...that, too, is a responsibility.

"I don't care if you abstain or if you have an abortion every other month...just carry your own weight and don't be a burden to me."
Too bad, but you live in the USA where we promote the general welfare of Americans with government money and effort. Just like all successful societies.
