The Senate voted 83-16 this afternoon to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border, as debate continued over whether, and to what degree, citizenship should be made available to America’s 11 million undocumented workers. I know, it's bizarre, but really true, the Mexicans , at the risk of being a glittering generality, really don't like us. What is the word I'm looking for, a symbionic realtionship? But I really think think that this not liking us is partially a transferance, instead of screaming at their Government, they are helpless in that department, they turn on us. It's pretty weird. I, too, have experienced "attitude" in tourism-industry places (Mexico's coasts, Caribbean, etc.), and I've worked in the service industry back in college; it's s tough row to hoe. I try not to be the loud, ugly American when I travel -- I suspect we have a bad rep in most corners of the world.
All I wanna know is, where the hell is the money coming from for this massive project!?!? Those spend-don't-tax, debt-headed Rapeublicants, that's who. They know they're out of the political picture for the next decade, so what do they care? Hunker down, kids, it's bound to be a rough ride.
Isn't this regime all so reminiscent of Hitler's multi-front wars? We have troops all over the world, mostly Afghanistan and Iraq lately, now more on the Mexican border? It's true; those who don't know their history are condemned to repeat it. Bush himself has admitted that he doesn't read, and I suspect he seldom ever did. He certainly doesn't listen -- to polls, to the thrumming masses, to sage advice.

I've never had a problem in Mexico
I go where there are few, if any, American tourists. Salamanca, GTO. The US Dollar, as well as American EXpress Traveler's checks, is functionally worthless. You will not hear any or read any English. Salamanca (pop 150-200,000) is not a small town by any means, it just has no tourism industry. I've never been treated anything but very very well when I have been down there. It is my favorite place in the world, and I have been around. Guess I shouldn;t have said something, now word will get around, and the place will be flooded... OOPS! Stay out! They hate us in Salamanca! LOL

I can hardly wait until the fence is built to keep out those spanish speaking folks who evade our authorities and sneak across our border, coming here without prior approval from the government, demand to be at the head of the line for green cards, demand to be on a fast track fopr citizenship, and demand our country deal with their home country the way they see fit, and not what is in the best interests of the USA. They say no to any requirements to prove that they have any skills necessary for a green card, no to any requirement that they learn english..... yes, I can't wait until the border between CUBA and Miami is secure! :-S
Cuban immigration
For those of you who do not know, only Cubans are allowed to come here without prior approval and receive blanket amnesty (as long as they physically touch US soil without the assistance of the government or any Americans. Nobody else in the world has that right under US Immigration law. Every requirement Bush stated for those who came from Mexico and (every other country in the world other than Cuba), for example: "They must learn English" can be followed with the phrase "unless, of course, they are my family and my party's loyal Cuban friends in Florida who voted 90% in my favior the last two elections. They don't have to do a damned thing at all."
To top it all off, one of the leaders of the Minuteman (and Republican candidate for Congress) project, Tony Dolz, is himself a border-jumper (came to the US from Cuba without prior permission from the US, thereby not "waiting in line like everyone else") who wails on and on about unsecure borders.... what hypocrisy from the right wing!!!!!

mexico has very little foriegn investment. and one of the major reason for this is the bribes that have to be paid to get anything done there. ok tell me why mexico's so poor. they have to very beautiful coast ripe for developement, lots of natural resources, people willing to work, why haven't they suceeded. are other neighbor canada is sucessful as are we. maybe it has something to do with their corrept system. you tell me. and please don't blame the USA. most people think this is a pretty good country. why do you think so many people from around the world wants to come here. and don't make something up. ask true immigrants why they want to come here. but Mexicans are only a fraction of illigals crossing the border. a large fraction, but still only about 50% of the total. as a soverign nation(sorry if i didn't spell that right)we do have a right to regulate who comes in and who doesn't. And believe me, if I was in their shoes, I'd be one of them, trying for a better life for me and mine. And you can't blame all of Mexicos problems on us. Their corruption pre-dates the USA. Or at least the USA's power to influence our neighbors in that manner.

your confusing a drug/alcohal program with detox. this is a social model detox. not a medical detox. there are doctors here, but not twenty/four seven. a social model detox allows the addict to get the alcohal/drug out of there system before entering a program, then prepers them for what to expect in a program.and if you'll notice there are only certain hours we are on line.

familiar with the numbers your throwing about, but i did hear something about the percentage of unassimilated people there will be in the next 50 or so years, at the rate we are going. The bill offers residence permits to highly qualified newcomers from outside the European Union.

You would have seen at the end how I was talkign about the CUBAN immigrants, who have an "open border" policy by LAW with the United States. I was not talking at all about Mexico or Mexicans. It was an attempt to point out the obvious double standard that Cubans enjoy. Two of teh Cuban "borderjumpers" are in fact, leaders of the ANTI-MEXICAN immigration policy, and yet they are never called on their own immigration policy. In short, any Cuban who evades our federal authorities and steps on US soil without assistance from teh US or a private citizen is AUTOMATICALLY rewarded with a green card for being a political refugee, even though they themselves need not have suffered at all back in Cuba. They are allowed to legally jump to the front of the line ahead of everyone else (faster processing times) as a reward for SNEAKING INTO OUR COUNTRY. Cubans are the only people on Earth allowed this under US law. ALL other applicants must prove that they suffered somehow at the hands of their home country's government, but not the Cubans. And yet, some of the strongest anti-Mexican forces in thsi country are Cuban. And need I remind anyone that during 2000 and 2004, the Cubans voted 90% for Bush? Tony Dolz, the "legal Hispanic immigrant" spokeman for the Minuteman....CUBAN..... Mel Martinez (R-FL), who wants to close teh border with Mexico.... CUBAN (he also wants to remove the obstacl;e of no assistance fgor the Cuban "refugees" so that EVERY cuban who comes here regardless of whether they received help or not is allowed to stay). The point of the post was to make people think about the hypocrisy this country has towards cubans, and all the benefits they are allowed to receive, and how in fact, they do many of teh things the Mexicans are accused of doing, yet nobody would dare criticize them. Lastly, polease don;t use teh word "latino." it is a made up word usedonly in the US. if you are Mexican, say so.... Borricua, say so, and yes, if you are a Cuban boprder jumper, admit that as well.

Immigration
I think it's about time we address the issue head-on. Exactly who are the people that cross our borders illegally. They are by far the poorest of the poor, less educated than most and in more cases than anyone cares to acknowledge individuals running from the law.
They come to this country of unenforced immigration laws to succeed where they have failed in their own country. The jobs they secure are most often those that pay minimum wage at best and provide no benefits or health care. Even the very few that get ITIN numbers and pay taxes get it all back at years end.
Who do you think picks up the emergency welfare, the health care, the educational expenses and other social services? Who do you think picks up the costs of additional police, fire, water and sewage for this additional 12 million residents require? Far from "paying" their way, it has been estimated that illegal immigration costs this country (Federal and State) an estimated $50 billion over and above what is received in taxes. This is not racial or ethnically motivated as some would care to believe. The simple truth being that anyone living at or below the poverty level, INCLUDING US CITIZENS, consumes more in services than they pay in taxes.
If you care to work for less than minimum wage or work under the table and pay nothing in taxes, then it's a no-brainer.
Why is it that no one wants to acknowledge that having to hire a slew of bi-lingual teachers, counselors and administrators to educate and converse with children 4 or 5 years behind their peers OR having to put every school notice/directive/announcement in 2-3 languages has put some school systems to their knees. Why is it that so many hospitals along our southern borders closed their emergency rooms; if not closed their doors altogether? If I am to believe the proponents of open borders the coffers of these communities should be overflowing with all the extra cash from these workers.
Get a life folks, step into the real world...we tried this crap once and all it got us was 12+ million more illegal immigrants. Corporate America has figured out if they can't export or outsource the work they might as well import cheap labor to do the work here. There are already farm worker programs in place to take care of picking all the fruits and veggies you could possibly grow. And if stores like Wal-Mart paid a decent wage, offered full-time instead of PT no benefit jobs, they'd get all the help they wanted.
