News:
The House yesterday approved their annual cost-of-living raise which, at $3,300, will bring their salaries to $168,500. Pending Senate approval, the 2% raise would be the seventh consecutive for Congress, which must specifically reject the otherwise automatic annual increase in salary. As president of the Senate, VP Dick Cheney is also in line for the cost-of-living bump, though his declared income for 2005—$1,961,157—would suggest he’s not in danger of missing any mortgage payments.
Of course Congress deserves a raise...
After all, they're doing SUCH a good job:
From record surplus to record defecit.
No oversight of the Executive branch.
A "blank check" for the war in Iraq.
No substantive action on health care, social security, immigration, energy, the list goes on and on.
Yep Congress, you're doing a heck of a job!

I would call my Senator at this point but,
they have not listened or acted upon anything good for this country since I came here to PA. Oh yeah, Santorum wrote a book about how RIGHT to live your life and where to put you WIFE. Worse selling book award I think.
I say that an elected official' salary should be directly attatched to all the money they make during their stay in office. That includes the left over money from campaigns, book deals, interviews, etc.
A Congressman or Senator who writes a book uses his POSITION and his INSIDE the LOOP information to profit while in office is using the taxpayers time, and money. All proceeds should go directly into the Social Security IOU's account. Any questions?
They would be thinking twice about spending time and effort when it does not benefit themselves.
Congresss 25% approval rating.
If they worked for me they would be fired.
Oh yeah they do.
FIRED. Come November, MR. Gerlach can breath a sigh of relief as he will no longer need to campaign for office ever again. And start collecting my grandkids tax money. ASSHOLES>
A job well done
Congratulations to our fine representatives for being there and working so-o-o hard on our behalf. I’m glad their toil does not go unrewarded. They need the cost-of-living raise because we don’t want them to suffer any sacrifice while our country is at war, while our federal deficit mounts ever higher, while the rest of us can’t afford our costs when our raises are frozen.
Of course, we know the paycheck does not include other subsidies, such as living expenses, postage, and travel – all on our nickel. We don’t want these po-folk to go hungry.
Here’s another observation. At their income level, they are the beneficiaries of the tax reductions for the rich that they also approved. Is there a pattern here? These people are shameless.
And, how many days do these humble working-class purveyors of popular posturing actually work? My guess is less work-days than recess-days. I’m not going to count the time spent on trips to vacation destinations disguised as government-related conferences. Swinging a golf club is not swinging legislation.
This lack of accountability is part of the overall culture of corruption. It has been so entrenched in our government that it has become commonplace, and job security is the foremost focus. It’s just that the GOP has taken corruption to new heights through their lack of discretion. These particular newsmakers are in the forefront of self-servitude, but both sides seem to have a blatant disregard for the opinions and concerns of their constituents.
Given the low approval ratings from their boss (that would be us) it surprises me that they are still employed at all. What other employer/employee situation can you think of where the employee gives himself or herself a raise in spite of the boss’s opinion? The real trouble here is that their boss is remiss in the review process. Their boss is absent-minded and has a short memory. By the time they are up for termination, all their misdeeds have been forgotten, if not forgiven.
What do you think we should do about this? Let’s all try to pay attention. Let’s make change – change of policy, change of direction, and change of representation – the pre-eminent issue of the next election. We need real reform.
That’s how I see it, but I may be wrong.
What do you think?

Let's Peg Congressional Pay to the National Debt
Lawmakers are often the first to say we need to run the country more like a business, at least GOP lawmakers are. So, I propose we tie their salaries to performance, much like business ties many employees salaries to their performance. (CEO's of course are never included in this group)
If the national debt goes up, their salaries go down. Military spending and government pork would evaporate.
Just a suggestion.

Unfortunatley WE don't get to say anything
We can speak up in November, but does that say bad boy bad? No, unless we vote out the incumbent.
Pennsylvania changed ?16? elected officials after the self imposed pay raise they gave themselves. So we can fire these people, but who will reverse, and change this trend.
Someone do the math. They also get a cost of living in there pensions too. So we get screwed twice as they double dip from OUR money tree.
7 Seven years straight, at this rate they will be paid how much in the near future 10yrs, 15yrs and on.
This open floor stealing is so american that it will destroy our ONCE great nation.
To bad it was great when I was a kid, and now as an adult I just don't understand where all this crime, fraud, lieing and cheating came from/
Yes giving yourself a raise is LIEING (I'm worth it) CHEATING (make the raise automatic) and fraud (I make money all sorts of different ways too).

Bush is going to turn on them, too. Hasert was already warned,

I think it is sad that workers making minimum wage have not seen a raise in 9 years and Congress has had one for the past 7 years. It shows you where their priorities lay. (Deep in their pockets)

I have to say I wish I could
I have to say I wish I could give myself a raise that easy, pffft.
oh well, more wasted money.
Well, that amendment did nothing
Does anyone still remember when that constitutional amendment was ratified 12 years or so ago? The one that states that congressional pay changes don't take effect until an election has occurred? The idea was that congress would NEVER raise their salary if they had to worry about an angry electorate voting them out before they get their money.
Yeah, that really worked.

I am sooooo tired of the Congress not doing their job, and expecting the citizens to accept their worthless performance. See froggy....
Us progressives see things differently....I think all those in Congress that voted for a payraise should say it publicly - Rep or Dem. Then let's see also a list of those who are pushing to increase the Federal Minimum Wage. I think you'll see a party-line list there. And most of us here are not hypocritical. I would like to see Rep Jefferson (Democrat) thrown out of office. He committed a crime, period.
The fact is, however, that most Republicans do not support an increase in the minimum wage and most Democrats do.
bad system
its a bad system to begin with. Most people would give themselves a pay raise under any circumstances. Greed is human nature, watch children playing and that becomes apparant. And on the minimum wage, I'll go on the record, i wouldnt raise it, i would get rid of it. Government control of such aspects of civilization basically boil down to communism.
Liberals?
Most of the people of this website are liberals. Democrats aren't liberals. There are very few liberals in Washington. Democrats are more liberal than republicans, which is good, but they're not liberals. If you actually spent any time listening to Air America, you'll figure that out. Until then, quit looking stupid.

I recall...
Back in the late 80's or early 90's Congress voted itself a pay raise. Senator Dennis DeConcini (D - AZ) not only voted against the raise, he refused to accept the additional money and returned it at each paycheck. With that simple act he gained my respect and admiration.

Pigs at the trough, termites in the basement
It is shameful that the legislators of this country never
miss a chance to chow down at the expense of the working
people. They never miss a meal. Or a snack.
At what point will these fine, upstanding servants of
the public decide that they too should sacrifice in this
time of illegal "war"? Is the nation's deficit not yet
inexcusable enough? Are the missing trillions not
alarming enough? Is an out of control administration
that they seem only able to bow down to not betrayal
enough? Self-serving pay raises, like tax cuts
at a time when the defense budget is spending
a billion dollars a day, fly in the face of reason.
It has never been done before, anywhere in the
world. Who are these people?
Like termites these self-serving law makers are
eating away the floor boards of America while the
criminal enterprise in full swing at the White House
is ramming away at it's central support beams. That
they feel entitled to take a pay check at all is proof
enough that none of these liars deserve the honorable
jobs entrusted to them. It almost makes one wish
for the return of hangings for traitorous scoundrels like these.
It would seem well deserved. We have all had more than
enough of the disloyalty and betrayal of this government.
It has forgotten that it exists to serve us, that it has no
rights, and that it has no excuse for it's despicable behavior.
We are not it's slaves, we don't exist to obey it.
It exists to obey our will. It has nothing more than
the authority we bestow on it to carry out the specific
duties clearly outlined in our founding documents.
Apparently, none of these people can read.
Perhaps it's time to speak a language that they
can understand. Taxes are investments. We expect
a return on those investments. Quarterly. If we don't
see them, these law makers are fired. Any lawyers out
there care to draft the amendment?

Speaking of numbers the Financial Times points out:
The global financial system seems to have a black hole at its centre. Over the last two decades, US residents have sold a total of about $5,500bn worth of IOUs to foreigners, yet the officially recorded net investment position of the US has deteriorated only by a little more than half of this amount ($2,800bn). The US capital market seems to have acted like a black hole for investors from the rest of world in which $2,700bn vanished from sight – or at least from the official statistics.
How can $2,700bn disappear?
It always is about the money.

House Dems introduce amend to raise min. wage
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/House_Dems_introduce_amendment_to_rais...
Miller has introduced legislation that would raise the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 in three increments over roughly two years. Hoyer and 134 other members of the House have cosponsored the legislation, but Republican leaders refuse to allow the House of Representatives to vote on it. Hoyer will offer Miller’s bill as an amendment today when the full House Appropriations Committee takes up the fiscal year 2007 spending bill for the Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services.
Seeking to bypass Republican leaders’ intransigence on the issue, Rep. John Barrow (D-GA) has introduced a petition that would force a full House debate and vote on the minimum wage if a majority of House members sign it. So far, 189 lawmakers – all Democrats – have signed the petition, meaning that just 29 more signatures are needed to force a vote.
