U.S. to Allow Geneva Protections for Detainees

News:

In a major reversal of policy, the White House announced today that all detainees held at Guantanamo Bay and other U.S. facilities around the world will be afforded the protections spelled out in the Geneva Conventions. The Bush administration had long claimed that detainees netted in the “war on terror” were not traditional prisoners of war, and therefore did not qualify for such treatment.

It just goes to show that

It just goes to show that the hardest thing to keep is a secret. Bush shouldve known that some politicians have something called a conscience which forced them to do the right thing and reveal the treachery of the administration.

A conscience? not according to John Dean. see video clip

John Dean on Countdown: Conservatives Without Conscience
(served as WH aid to Nixon)

John Dean joined Keith Olbermann Monday to explain the theories in his new book, "Conservatives Without Conscience," which explains a lot of the behavior we see today.

To put it simply, Dean makes the case (with data he uncovered) that many conservatives of today need an authoritarian figure to guide them and they willingly do whatever it takes to please that figure. Dean cites G. Gordon Liddy as the perfect example of a guy willing to be shot in the street to indulge his master. He highlights the fear mongering that this administration has been using for years now as a model that allows the concept to be implemented. The way Tom Delay controlled the House is another perfect illustration of this behavior. Dean is a Barry Goldwater conservative.

Infact,he DEDICATES the book to Barry Goldwater in the preface!

Dean had many conversations about the hijacking of the GOP in '94 before Goldwater passed.

Saw the Dean

Saw the Dean Interview...Scarey!!!
Dean was clear and concise in his facts and figures. I don't usually rush out and buy a book from an interview, but this will be one. Well, at least when it gets to Costco. No wonder, Hitler took over Germany. And these conservatives are breeding like rabbits.

IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE... RIGHT ??

.

AG--I'd bet not one contard here get's the reference to

Sinclair Lewis' famous work.

Oh well, I guess ignorance is bliss----AND dangerous!

ignorance is bliss, patience

ignorance is bliss, patience is a virtue, so if your stupid and dont mind waiting around, good things will come to you!

Yeah right, down the rabbit hole we go.....la la lala la

Don't tell me you missed grammar class too !!!!

Jeezus H Christ.... did all you cons flunk English 101 ??

Or is it just in the FOX kool-aid?

Do you know what a contraction is? How about a possessive pronoun?

Gawwwwwwd, talk about ignorance !!!!

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity"
Martin Luther King Jr.,1963

And regarding historical amnesia, Cicero had an insight:

"To be ignorant of what occured before you were born is to remain a perennial child" CICERO, 50B.C.

3 historical words for CONS---REPUBLICAN Great Depression.

Learn from it and stop being a "perennial child"

damn

i didnt realize this was an english class.

Almost, it's a THOUGHT class. Language is a tool for thought!

Remember democrazy,

words and language are tools of THOUGHT!

If your words and language(grammar) skills are HAZY,incoherent & clutterd, this reveals that your thoughts are HAZY,incoherent & clutterd ;
and hence your "arguments" will end up clutterd & FUCKED-UP!

That's why we generous liberals point it out!

So, if you want to enter the arena and play the debate-thought-argument game, you better bring the tools to play the game, namely words and language(grammar) skills!

We are trying to HELP you !!!!

Here,this might help you:

Songbirds can sing, but can they learn grammar?

Updated 4/26/2006 5:19 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) — The simplest grammar, long thought to be one of the skills that separate man from beast, can be taught to a common songbird, new research suggests

so are you saying that only

so are you saying that only the opinions of the well educated matter? Just because a monkey cant say "I want the banana.", doesnt mean that the monkey doesnt want the banana. Misspelling a word or making a grammatical doesnt mean that the thought is not valid. This is a blog, not an english class. I'm just as liberal as the next guy, maybe not as educated, but I would like to think that everybody's opinion counts.

Reread my post. Comprehension is also a requirement!

Reread my post. Comprehension is also a requirement to play the debate game.

No one cares about typos and spelling errors. Everyone makes 'em.

But a basic 2nd grade level of the eight parts of speech to construct a coherent thought is the minimum to play this sport.

Would you come to a football game without the proper tools like pads, etc.?

If you wanna enter the game without the requisite tools, then be my guest, I have know problem with it. Just be prepared to get injured without your helmut.

You're a "liberal"? Could've fooled me!

If this was a test, and I am being graded, I may as well leave now.

Thanks. My back goes out every 6 months.

On Sinclair Lewis. I'd recommend his book entitled,

"It can't happen here" It's a classic. Published in early '30s as Fascism was rising in Europe.

It's about how it can sneak up on America too.

But everyone always said, "It can't happen here"

It's a classic novel written 70 years ago. I think AG was referencing that book. But maybe I am wrong.

Go to Amazon.com and check out the editorial reviews to get a feel of the book.

A secret?

Throw in Stephanie Miller....

What I want to know is...

WIll we get our Geneva rights in the Halliburton political camps? What wine will they serve? 'cos I think "Two-Buck Chuck" violates the Convention :)

I want me some of that lemon

I want me some of that lemon chicken and murder they serve at Gitmo.

that sucks, says cheney, no

that sucks, says cheney, no more pin the tail on the prisoner.

Score one for the good guys, even if the bad guys did it

It's going to be very difficult for the Shrubbites to maintain their "secret" detention facilities now. How bad would they look if they said, "Well, we're going to give the Gitmo prisoners protection under the Geneva Conventions, but the prisoners being held in the Middle East and Eastern Europe...well, screw them."

I think that somebody on the Supreme Court has got somebody in the White House by the balls...probably John Roberts reminding Bush that Roberts was a major player on Bush's legal team in Bush v. Gore. There's no other way that Bush's war-prisoner-house-of-cards could come tumbling down this quickly. First the Gitmo ruling, and now this? I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

A belated struggle for decency.

No doubt in the hope the secret four generation indictments may be appeased. Why does this seem vacuous?

Liberté! La Belle Dame Sans Merci

I commend them on finally

I commend them for finally doing what is right and humane, for taking the higher road. Forgive me, though, as I'm skeptical that this is just a facade - they're just going to do a better job of hiding the secret prisoners.

An apt quote from IKE regarding this thread

Eisenhower quote: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

Nothing has changed--- infact, it's worse than Ike predicted!

DVD---"Why we Fight" exposes all what IKE talked about.

The documentary starts with IKE's famous farewell speech.

and this is breaking news?

this should never have been an issue!!!

it should have been a given!!!

good thing the US is finally recognizing the Geneva convention.

Bush, gutting his followers

just in time for NOVEMBER.

Finally, now he wants to look like the Compassionate Conservative. What a dumb ass. Is he overlooking the 6 years of war crimes HE commited? Is this a part of HIS defense stradegy for when he goes to the world court?? ^&%&ing panzy..

Watch out for the spin folks. Watch out for the fact there are bigger fish to fry out here, and we know he needs another issue to change the subject.

War or Peace. If you are a

War or Peace. If you are a civilized nation. You have to have some means of figuring out who you caught. Do we want fair trials or kangaroo courts, or nothing at all? What if the bush kids, visiting Iraq with their dad, were caught outside the Green Zone with an AK47 they picked up to look at outside a bar. And, having fake ID's they couldn't be identified. So, after a brief stay at Abu Ghraib they were sent to Gitmo for more questioning. Why would any NonCom believe who they really were? Only Rummy would have a chance to save them on his tri-yearly visits to Gitmo. We are a Civilized Christian Nation that believes all men are created equal and deserve fair trials for any crimes they MAY have committed against mankind.

Righties, where are you?

Come on guys, your Retard-in-Chief is eating "Chicken and Waffles" for breakfast, and you say NOTHING? either that or jfrogg is the ONLY contard on the site!?!?!

there is the reason that is the most obvious... since their points are so illogical they can't post unless they hear...

Rules at Guantanamo have been unclear {?}

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5169600.stm
US detainees to get Geneva rights
Guantanamo detainee
Rules at Guantanamo have been unclear in the past
All US military detainees, including those at Guantanamo Bay, are to be treated in line with the minimum standards of the Geneva Conventions.

The White House announced the shift in policy almost two weeks after the US Supreme Court ruled that the conventions applied to detainees.

President Bush had long fought the idea that US detainees were prisoners of war entitled to Geneva Convention rights.
The Pentagon outlined the new standards to the military in a 7 July memo.
The directive says all military detainees are entitled to humane treatment and to certain basic legal standards when they come to trial, as required by Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions.

The new Pentagon policy applies only to detainees being held by the military, and not to those in CIA custody, such as alleged mastermind of the 11 September attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

CIA doesn't have to comply? There is always a catch with this Admuddlestration.
