Pentagon Estimates Iran 5-8 Years from Bomb

News:
The U.S. military believes that Iran is no closer than five years away from successfully building a nuclear bomb, with some estimates putting it closer to eight years, according to the Washington Times. Similar to the consensus of the intelligence community, that timeframe would seem to undermine the grim warnings of those calling for military strikes on Iran. However, neo-conservatives are undeterred, and argue that further pursuing diplomacy would only give Iran more time to perfect its program.

Let's flatten every

Let's flatten every non-nuclear country out there, because EVERY country on the planet might become a nuclear country. The science is out there.

What hypocrites. The US is the most dangerous of all the nuclear countries.
"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves." Confucius

Yes the science is out there

And so is the science of fire.

But when's the last time you let a
child play with fire ???

Can you elaborate on that

Can you elaborate on that "point", jmg? It's extremely vague.

Grow up....

"Yes the science is out there
And so is the science of fire.

But when's the last time you let a
child play with fire ???" jmg93

So are the Iranians like children? Is that what you are saying? If that is how youa think of Iran, then you fit right in with Bush. Sorry to deflate your little bubble, but the US ain't the only grownup on the block anymore. We need to work with the rest of the world to solve this, not just go in and bomb them. Iraq was child's play compared to what we would see by invading Iran. And the fact is, we haven't even been successful in Iraq. So when do we invade North Korea????

They aren't fascists...............

First of all you need to do a google search on the definition of fascism. You will find that with all the unconstitutional, anti-democratic, secret powers that the neocons have taken for themselves, the way that opposition party members are attacked as unpatriotic and the alignment of the federal government and big corporate interests, the definition of fascist clearly describes Bushco rather than Islamic extremists.
Islamic extremists are exactly that; islamic extremists. They are the result of the fact that people, when finding themselves in real or perceived extreme circumstances, nearly always resort to extreme measures to rectify their situation. (As I recall our own nation was birthed thusly.) Arabian people have suffered for thousands of years under the heels of opressers, whether from within their ranks or without. During the supposedly enlightened past half century, they have been given the choice of the stick of accepting their fate of being opressed or the stick of the wrath of their opressors should they decide to do anything about it. For example, instead of rewarding the Palistinian people with their own gradually emancipated state in exchange for peaceful coexistance, Israel has offered endless negotiations and unacceptable demands which, if put into play would merely give the Palistinians a water and rescource poor land with borders resembling that of swiss cheese and no prospect of any hope of prosperity for it's people.
The idiots in charge of our foreign policy in this region have consistantly demonstrated that they have no clue of how to win the hearts and minds of it's people and have now saddled us in a war of attrition in which our strength is sapped while our percieved enemy grows stronger day by day. Their blunders and pandering to the "kill 'em all" crowd simply ensures that we will have to do exactly that in order to "win". We spend the time, blood and valor of our army trying to wipe up our past blunders over there and by so doing merely spread the seeds of loathing, by and towards us, in all directions.
To wit: Iran is implementing a plan of energy independence. Much like the plans we set our course on during the Carter years and for much the same reasons, Iran can see that it's national security is inherently tied to it's ability to domesticly produce it's own vital rescources. That means electric power. The U.S., in it's short-sided haste to prop up the Shah (who could more accurately be described as a fascist but not of the islamo variety) supplied a nuclear power plant to Iran which was unbelievably designed to operate with weapons grade fuel. The Russians, in their infinite wisdom, then helped the Ayatollah's regime build a nuclear power plant which can be used to produce weapons grade fuel. These two seemingly suicidal blunders are the root cause of our current nuclear woes with Iran.
To sum up, we have, largely through our own ineptitude, fostered the growth of islamic extremism, united islamic and Palistinian terrorists, rendered ourselves susceptable to nuclear blackmail and weakened ourselves while strengthening our enemies. Admittedly you had help (primarily from herr Kissenger and the Russian mafi....er....business interests) but still quite a list of accomplishments President Shrub.
As the great philosopher Pogo once said; "I has seen the enemy, and he is us!"

"Welcome to the corporate socialist state. Please leave your personal liberty and prosperity at the door with the friendly guard in the Halliburton uniform."

Amen, carfender

the definition of fascist clearly describes Bushco rather than Islamic extremists.

Solve what? Iran wants clean

Solve what? Iran wants clean electricity, where's the problem in that? Even if they are after a nuclear bomb, they know that it would be suicide to use it. It's the same reason North Korea, Pakistan, and India haven't used their nukes yet, they know that nothing good will come of it because using one will justify one being used against them.

Great point, Michtou!

Great point, Michtou! However, before the Neo dork freepers start attacking you for being an America hater, you should point out that "America is the most dangerous of all nuclear countries"............BECAUSE OF THE FLAKES THAT HAVE THEIR FINGERS ON THE BUTTON! Hey frogga$$, What about the CIA and drug biz??

H2956 CONGRESSIONAL RECORD—HOUSE May 7, 1998

APRIL 1978
Soviet-backed coup in Afghanistan sets
stage for explosive growth in Southwest
Asian heroin trade. New Marxist regime undertakes
vigorous anti-narcotics campaign
aimed at suppressing poppy production, triggering
a revolt by semi-autonomous tribal
groups that traditionally raised opium for
export. The CIA-supported rebel Mujahedeen
begins expanding production to finance their
insurgency. Between 1982 and 1989, during
which time the CIA ships billions of dollars
in weapons and other aid to guerrilla forces,
annual opium production in Afghanistan increases
to about 800 tons from 250 tons. By
1986, the State Department admits that Afghanistan
is ‘‘probably the world’s largest
producer of opium for export’’ and ‘‘the
poppy source for a majority of the Southwest
Asian heroin found in the United States.’’
U.S. officials, however, fail to take action to
curb production. Their silence not only
serves to maintain public support for the
Mujahedeen, it also smooths relations with
Pakistan, whose leaders, deeply implicated
in the heroin trade, help channel CIA support
to the Afghan rebels.

APRIL 1989
The Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism,
Narcotics and International Communications,
headed by Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts,
issues its 1,166-page report on drug
corruption in Central America and the Caribbean.
The subcommittee found that ‘‘there
was substantial evidence of drug smuggling
through the war zone on the part of individuals
Contras, Contra suppliers, Contra pilots,
mercenaries who worked with the Contras
supporters throughout the region.’’ U.S. officials,
the subcommittee said, ‘‘failed to address
the drug issue for fear of jeopardizing
the war efforts against Nicaragua.’’ The investigation
also reveals that some ‘‘senior
policy makers’’ believed that the use of drug
money was ‘‘a perfect solution to the
Contras’ funding problems.’’

Hmm, so you are saying that "Clerical Fascism" is the same word as "Islamo-fascism"? If so, why didn't Rumsfeld just say "Clerical Fascism"? I guess that it's close enough for those who think that invading Iraq was the same thing as punishing Osama for 9/11.

And just exactly where did Heavily Armed or anyone else say that fascism is "funny"? I must have missed that. The US is heading toward fascism and I totally agree with you that we are having fewer and fewer good days living under it.

- "What experience and history teach is this--that people and governments never have learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it." - Georg Hegel

fewer good days

Well now, actually I said Islamic Fascism is a type of Clerical Fascism and I can only suppose Rummy wanted to be very specific in that we ARE talking about Islamic Fascists.

I disagree with your assesment of the the US and fascism.
Fascism exalts the nation, state, belief, or race as superior to the individuals or groups composing it. (Alla, lets send out the suicide bombers to be mass murders) Fascism uses explicit populist rhetoric (Ahmadinejad and the Holocaust myth); calls for a heroic mass effort to restore past greatness (the creation of the first Islamist state in the Arab world); and demands loyalty to a single leader, often to the point of a cult of personality. ..and on and on…..

The Hegel quote is a good one...

You need to really think . . .

about your post:

1) Fascism exalts the nation, state, belief, or race as superior to the individuals;

2) Fascism uses explicit populist rhetoric;

3) ...calls for a heroic mass effort to restore past greatness;

4) ...demands loyalty to a single leader, often to the point of a cult of personality.

I will entertain suggestions as to the world leader who best represents your criteria . . . .

:-)

fascism

That seems an adequate description of fascism as espoused and personified by Mussolini. Among current world leaders Hugo Chavez, several of the leaders of former Soviet republics (too many to look up), Osama bin Laden (leader of the muslim world in his own mind, anyway) and Kim of N. Korea. Does Bush fit this criteria? Maybe. Rumsfeld does, I think, but in theory that gang will be gone in January 2009. Time will tell. My own worst nightmare is the current administration will, claiming national emergency, cancel the 2008 election.

Ummm...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say....

Bush????? OK, maybe there are a few who are more representative, but NONE who are as representative in a country that is supposed to have safeguards against fascism.

What is fascism?

Sorry, I actually can't see where you said that Islamic Fascism is a type of Clerical Fascism. Maybe on another thread?

Anyway, more to the point, when thinking of fascism, I typically think of Mussolini who first starting using it in 1919 and think of it primarily as the merger of state and corporate power. Perhaps this is more correctly called corporatism. I realize there are differing opinions about how fascism is defined and that there are many other aspects to fascism. However, most historians and political scientists agree that fascism rejects liberal ideas such as freedom, democracy and individual rights and is associated with right-wing politics. Dr. Lawrence Britt did a study which resulted in defining 14 characteristics common to past fascist regimes. Going through the list, one can see elements of each of the 14 characteristics in America today, such as the disdain for the recognition of human rights, identification of enemies as a unifying cause, control of mass media, obsession with national security, the intertwining of religion and government, protection of corporate power and suppression of labor, distain for intellectuals and the arts, rampant cronyism and corruption, and fraudulent elections.

Reading through your list, though you tried to tie every point to Islam extremists, I see the same things right in our own country with the right-wing extremists here (“demands loyalty to a single leader, often to the point of a cult of personality

Progressivepatriot

I belive that the neocons don`t know the difference between theoracy and fascism. Iran is not a fascist state but a theoracy plain and simple.

Where Bush & Co is fascism plain and simple. Where they follow a leader into a god like person, and want to do more to the american people and now some are seeing that he is not a leader but nothing more then a wantabe dictator..

I think the leaders know

But they're pretty sure their rank and file are too stupid to know and to lazy to do research. So they always (and I mean always) accuse the opposition of doing what they themselves are doing. They call someone else fascist because they themselves are. They accuse others of hating America because they themselves do. They call Democrats elitist because they themselves are. And on and on.... It's pretty simnple to figure out what the neocons are up to, just listen to what they accuse their opposition of. And their rank and file slavering sycophants just accept, believe, and follow.

"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves." Confucius

fascism is...

You are right in thinking that typically most of us think of fascism being associated with Mussolini and as the classic merger of state and corporate power in the extreme, but it is not the only form of fascism.

Clerical fascism is an ideological construct that combines the political and economic doctrines of fascism with theology or religious tradition. The term has been used to describe organisations and movements that combine religious elements with fascism, support by religious organisations for fascism, or fascist regimes in which clergy play a leading role.

Your point that fascism rejects liberal ideas such as freedom, democracy, and individual rights is right on. How better to describe some of the tenents of the Iranian Fascist Islamic State? Militant lefties here will say we don’t have those freedoms either but a fair assesment will allways prove them wrong. As to Dr. Britt, yes I will never say we don’t at times see elements of some mild forms of his 14 characteristics but lets not be blind to the comparison we are talking about. (Scholars, such as Juan Cole, however point to the fact, that presently the term fascism is used pejoratively by those opposed to religious influence upon politics in general.) We have and always will unify against an outside enemy, our mass media is more open now than anytime in the history of man with tv, radio, the press and the internet. A strong yet prudent stance on national security is always healthy and more-so in this climate, etc etc. I am a proud member and supporter of the arts in my community and while I am not an intellectual, to be sure there are many intellectuals throughout this country who thrive and prosper on all sides of the political spectrum. Lastly, I hope you aren’t one who hasn’t gotten over the past presidential elections, ‘cause I’m sorry, they were not fraudulent.

In Islam, Iran offers the best-known example of the militant form of politicized Islamic Fundamentalism and religious intolerance. Try being an Iranian Muslim who wants to convert to Christianity or god forbid Judaism, you just signed you death sentence. This tradition, to be sure, dates back even to pre-Islamic times; as manifested in the persecution of the Turks and Uzbeks and, more recently, in the persecution of various Islamic sects, Bahais, Christians, Jews, and virtually all other religions. The injunction of a holy war (jihad) against the non-Islamic world (dar al harb) is a collective duty (fard al kifaya) of vital importance. The jihad is a permanent revolution in which there may be temporary truces but no real peace. This is the law, but on a practical level, concessions must be made much of the time.
Fundamentalism, is not of course, an Islamic monopoly, as it can be found in Christianity too. But fundamentalism in and of itself is not the problem. Militant fundamentalism found in the various strains of Christianity, in Islam and in Judaism, etc tears at the fabric of civilized societies and sends out their martyrs to kill others, (you and I) because they are at war with Western Civilization. Just another rise in this centuries old struggle between two parts of the world who cannot or will not understand and tolerate each other.

The elections were not fraudulent?

Sorry, you are wrong.

The exit polls in 10 states were off by more than 5%. That is statistically impossible, unless there was funny business.

The easily hackable voting machines made countless errors in counting and data collection, all of which favored Bush. Computers fail randomly.

I was interested in the other 99% of your post but you lost all credibility when you made that statement.

Everyone who considers them selves to be an American should take the issue of election fraud seriously. This should not be a partisan issue. The amount of evidence is overwhelming that massive election fraud is taking place today in this country, and this election fraud is primary being conducted by the Republican Party. I will not say that the Democratic Party has never fixed an election in the past, nor would I condone it if they were to do it today. But the overwhelming evidence is out there if you’d just take the time to read it and take off your partisan hat. Put your country before your party for once. The theft of both the 2000 and 2004 elections is not "old news" and should never be consider as such.

The situation

when all else fails, vote from the rooftops

...is curious and disturbing. my political sources indicate that this administration, despite it's continued blustery rhetoric, is dead. A regime so under seige and on the verge of collapse that all they CAN do is spout propaganda while lawyering up for the coming Purge. This Iran War rhetoric has nothing to back it up. Without the support of the Intel community, and without the commanding Generals on board 100%, any action in Iran is pure fantasy. And in spite of some popular opinion, you cannot just swoop in and bomb. You must follow up. If you intend to swat the hornets' nest, you best be ready for what comes next, and this administration frankly has nothing left other than the nuke button, and once again, this too requires the cooperation of the commanding Generals, who privately are NOT on board for any Armageddon scenarios over China's oil supply. All this administration is really concerned about is LOSING control of Congress, so the hope is that 2 months of War Rhetoric will convince the public that Armageddon is imminent and scare them into maintaining the Status Quo. the problem is, America has finally figured out that the ONLY people creating mass terror in our fine Nation since 9/11 is THIS ADMINISTRATION, so THEY have to GO. If you're going to tell everyone that terror and death are everywhere for 5 years, you need something to back up your bullshit, but so far it's all so much crying WOLF just to alter the very fabric of American life, revoke our rights, and steal a LOT of money. We haven't seen any real terrorists lately, have we? So my view is: It's all more smoke. It's more Fear Propaganda to try and keep control of Congress. We have nothing to send Iran except air power or nukes, and the air power won't do without a full scale follow up on the ground, and the nuke option is pure suicide, so I say it's all election year bullshit. These guys are fired, they know it, and they'll say or do anything to save their own asses.

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2004/6/17/105341.shtml

In his interview with CBS newsman Dan Rather set for broadcast on Sunday, ex-President Bill Clinton flatly contradicts his earlier recorded confession that Sudan offered to arrest Osama bin Laden and hand him over to the U.S., calling reports of such an offer "bull."

Clinton let bin laden go, now there is audio PROOF of this. Its a little thing called facts huff, you should try it some time.

The Pentagon refused reinforcements

CIA agent alleged to have met Bin Laden in July

French report claims terrorist leader stayed in Dubai hospital

Anthony Sampson
Thursday November 1, 2001
The Guardian

Two months before September 11 Osama bin Laden flew to Dubai for 10 days for treatment at the American hospital, where he was visited by the local CIA agent, according to the French newspaper Le Figaro.

The disclosures are known to come from French intelligence which is keen to reveal the ambiguous role of the CIA, and to restrain Washington from extending the war to Iraq and elsewhere.

Bin Laden is reported to have arrived in Dubai on July 4 from Quetta in Pakistan with his own personal doctor, nurse and four bodyguards, to be treated in the urology department. While there he was visited by several members of his family and Saudi personalities, and the CIA.

Frogg pithed brain....read the entire article

Former President Clinton, speaking about Sudan ...."They released him. At the time, 1996, he had committed no crime against America so I did not bring him here because we had no basis on which to hold him, though we knew he wanted to commit crimes against America.

Note the key point here, "no basis on which to hold him". Barring any reliable intel on his intentions, or concrete actions on his part, there were just some little things like international and US law standing in the way of bringing him over here.

It's a little thing called facts frogg, you should try it some time.

oh jesus christ frisbee

oh jesus christ frisbee heres another lib asking me for facts facts facts facts facts. i asked you to stop! i don't even know what they are.thats it, you guys pissed me off. im callin rush to find out what a fact is. right after i get my talking points from karl

"Bin Laden Determined To Strike In US"

That's what Bush read while on vacation in Texas.

Guess that information really IS "historical" now.

9/11 happened while Bush was reading "My Pet Goat". He continued reading the book after he knew the WTC had been hit.

Explain that, you neo-cons.....

"How stupid can people be."

For your answer, take a look in the mirror. Apparently you didn't learn anything from the lessons of Iraq.

Iran nukes/Froggie/Teerover

Froggie. I asked you a question a couple of weeks ago and you didn't answer. Are you of an age to serve and if so are you content to let young people do the dying for you while you sit at home whingeing about liberals?

WMD's were found.

500 and some shells with mustard gas.
Wilson was/is wrong about the yellow cake (a ton and a half was found in Iraq.

You don't need all the technical support once the experiments and expensive and time consuming stuff is already done.
Why do all you appeasers stick your head in the sand?
Because the terriorist will chop it off.
Liberalism is a mental disorder and endangers us all.
Demos would rather go down with the ship than have it righted by a conservative. I am not a Repub.
Thanks

Buuuurppppp You're right, Belchman

the rest of the world is MIS-INFORMED.

I bet Rove loves you......

No but Rove loves people like you pb_true.

All we need to do is get a few of your ravings out from under this rock and let the rest of the world see how you think or, rather don't think.

again foolish neocon

it is over. No need to keep lying. It is done. It is over. You can rest, you lost the battle. Oh what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive.

you stupid ignorant neocon

You know those were not the WMDs the military was looking for. But you do not care. You will support this criminal administration thru all the lies and deception. Why do you hate america and its constitution you filthy animal?

Tell us when bush said

Tell us when bush said "brand new wmd's" and we will leave it alone. To claim that iraq never had wmd's or sponsored terrorists just makes the libs look stupid. You never have any links of facts to back up anything you say. You must have purchased an "invent-a-fact" from walmart.

Rumsfeld had a problem backing it up hahaha

Time is the enemy of truth...JFK Jr.

stupid fool!

A WMD has to actually be capable of causing MASS DESTRUCTION! Not 20 year old inert ingriedients. Where is bin Laden? Where are the WORKING WMDs that Bush said were a danger to America and were the reason to attack Iraq?

Actually, jfrogg....

Bush said Iraq was an "imminent threat". Remember?

Tell me, what was this "imminent threat" if not WMD's??????

Keep lying Nazi

We don't believe anyhing you say, but you're very entertaining!

As far as I can tell...

You Republicans love Iraq more than the US.

You would rather:

Rebuild Iraqi schools than American schools

Rebuild Iraqi hospitals than American hospitals

Rebuild Iraqi roads and bridges than American roads and bridges

Rebuild the Iraqi economy than the American economy.

You LOVE spending 1 1/2 billion dollars every week in Iraq
and don't care that 47 million Americans have no healthcare.

If you all love Iraq so much, why don't you move there?

no your wrong belcher.

no your wrong belcher. santorum found that shit im my garage
