100 deaths for what?

On April 30, 2003, less than six weeks after invading Iraq, Rumsfeld announced the withdrawal of the US military from Saudi Arabia. With this announcement Saudi dissidents and Islamist confederates achieved the goal of bombings that started in Saudi Arabia with the Khobar Towers killing 19 US personnel and ended with 15 Saudis and four conspirators taking over the planes on 9/11.

The administration was in a panic to get out of Saudi Arabia to prevent another attack in the US. Because the US airbase and command center in Saudi Arabia were used to enforce the 'no-fly' zone in Iraq, the administration had to overthrow Saddam before it could withdraw. At the time, little notice was made of Bush's concession to the terrorists because of the fear mongering over mushroom clouds and the grief which gripped the country. In retrospect the withdrawal from Saudi Arabia was not an incidental benefit to the suppression of an imminent threat of the secular tyrant Saddam Hussein giving WMD to his 'terrorist' enemies to use on us. The only substantial reason for the pre-emptive invasion of a sovereign country, a country which was not connected to the 9/11 attacks, was to eliminate the Saudi Base which provoked the bombings since 1996 and the tragedy of 9/11. (Revenge for his father and stealing oil are not mutually exclusive motivations)

The whole idea of 'cutting and running' from the terrorists became moot when Bush gave them what they wanted on April 30, 2003. How many chicken hawks will want to kill more American soldiers once the debate erupts over conceding to terrorist demands and the strategic retreat into Iraq? The propaganda machine will try to mis-characterize the debate and hide behind the troops, but the troops did their job-- the 'mission accomplished' banner on the aircraft carrier Lincoln was accurate-- the military finished the job with Bush I, Cheney and Powell had botched after their 100 hours in the first Gulf War. And that was the only mission they were given, Rumsfeld was ruthless in limiting the mission so commanders could not object or request more resources which might delay the invasion, delay the withdrawal from Saudi Arabia and leave the US open to more attacks. When the banner went up, what had been accomplished-- no WMD, no consolidation of borders, no quelling of looting, no rebuilding and no democracy– that was never their job, never. The only thing accomplished was the elimination of the 'no-fly' zone-- the job which the military had waited years to do, and which they did. Eventually the military will stop agreeing to be the whipping boy for BushCo's Machiavellian incompetence.

There have been no comprehensive plans since the push into Iraq and withdrawal from Saudi Arabia, only ad hoc responses to eliminate political embarrassment. Bush is trying to back away from "stay the course" because it is idiotic once people realize that Iraq was a strategic retreat. Does he really think staying the 'retreat' course is best? Until there is recognition about how and why our military ended up in this quagmire there can be no realistic or effective plans for a workable solution. Any real plan will generate discussion about what happened in 2002 and 2003. They are hoping to continue putting lipstick on this pig for six more days, keep the myth of aggressive attack on terrorism in Iraq going until voters can do nothing.

Sadly, what Democrat has the guts to talk about this? Will Rumsfeld be right, we'll leave a clear look at what happened to the historians? If this subject erupts in the next six days, who knows what will happen, so we had better talk about the ads about Harold Ford, or Limbaugh and Michael J. Fox.
