Fred Dalton Thompson : enabled S & L crisis of '80s

Please spread the word....this is not the type of man we want as President.

In 1975, Thompson began his eighteen year engagement as a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., eventually representing clients including Westinghouse, General Electric (the current corporate owner of the NBC Universal-NBC television network), and the Tennessee Savings and Loan League.[6]

[..]

By 1982, Thompson worked the U.S. Congress membership as a lobbyist for passage of the Savings and Loan deregulation legislation desired by the Tennessee Savings and Loan League --- in this case, federal deregulation legislation allowing for additional government support of ailing S&Ls; giving U.S. thrifts the freedom to invest in potentially more profitable, but riskier, ventures; and eliminating interest-rate ceilings on new accounts to increase S&Ls' competitiveness.

Enacted into law during in September 1982, the Senate bill pushed by Thompson was incorporated into the Garn - St Germain Depository Institutions Act of 1982.

The Garn - St Germain Depository Institutions Act of 1982 is widely credited with having laid the groundwork for the U.S. Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s.[6] ---------------------

The savings and loans crashes of the 1980s, themselves directly the result of Reagan’s deregulation of the banking industry, is more interesting because of how it reflects the rapacious nature of unbridled capitalism than of Neil Bush himself. Who by the way, is now embroiled in another scam with his latest venture, educational software, Ignite

(turnover $20 million, much of it from educational subsidies obtained in the state of Florida ,where, ‘coincidentally’ of course, his bro Jeb, is governor).

Altogether, it’s been calculated that bailing out the failed S&Ls countrywide cost the US taxpayer around $1.4 trillion!

---------------

By the time Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, two-thirds of the nation's S&Ls were losing money and many were broke. If all the problem thrifts had been shut down right then, the government's insurance fund would have covered their debts.

Instead, the government delayed an average of two years-and, in some cases, as many as seven years-thus allowing bankrupt S&Ls to go on losing billions of dollars.

This delay also gave S&Ls a chance to gamble on questionable investments, in an attempt to regain solvency. But first they had to convince Congress to deregulate them.

One night in 1980, Representative Fernand St Germain (D-Rhode Island), whose $10,000-to-$20,000-a-year restaurant and bar tab was paid for by the S&L industry's chief lobbyist, proposed raising federal insurance on S&L savings accounts from $40,000 to $100,000- even though the average size of an S&L account was $6,000.

He waited until after midnight, when only eleven representatives were still on the floor of the House; they approved his proposal unanimously. But St Germain was just getting warmed up.

In 1982, he cosponsored a bill that removed all controls on what S&Ls could charge for interest and released them from their century-old reliance on home mortgages.

it figures you would want this -- another handpuppet

Gee -- he can speak lines -- let's make him PRESIDENT.

Hillary, like Bill, are indeed a little too far right for my liking on a couple issues, but with that said, they certainly are not as far to the right as McCain, Giuliani and the Mormon. At least Hillary is NOT a stay the wrong course PNAC neocon.

The latest polls I saw last night show her slightly behind Obama. (With Obama beating all 3 top neocons, Hillary beating all but Giuliani.) I really don't see MoveOn effecting the DNC selection process as much as they will disrupt and smear the GOP. Don't worry about MoveOn if you're a Dem, they will be busy digging up the dirt on the neocons and will have little if any impact on the convention results.

there is hope for you yet....Is it time to rapture these fake christians yet?

I think the distance between

I think the distance between the GOP and the far right fundies is a result of two actions. One, the rank and file Repub sees them as religious nuts and exremists, and understands that if the party is associated with extreme right positions, they will lose the middle, and hence, the election. OTOH, the fundies see themselves as being betrayed by the GOP who talked a good game but did not deliver on those promises on the social domestic agenda.

Hopefully the Falwell crowd will crawl back into their holes and patiently await their rapture.

Pragmatic Republicans will try to move their party back from the extremes, more towards the center, or else risk losing it all. America is fed up to death with the far right wing whackjob extremists like the neocons and the bible thumpers. You can thank Bush, Cheney, Falwell and Robertson for all that, plus their do-nothing rubber stamp congress under DeLay and Frist.

The only regions who will still support the right wing whacks are the deep south, which is full of religious fanatics, racist rednecks, hillbillies and rubes.

Try it some time....Getting a good job I mean. It works wonders for your self image. I made sacrifices that most Americans would not for my job...

The govt and taxpayers

pay for your employment and your socialized healthcare. You work for the big govt. The big government provides everything in your life. Therefore, you are a socialist

It has nothing to do with bad choices. You joined the socialist brigade because it was easier and had more security. Being a socialist yourself, you really should learn more about who you are and what you do.

Sorry, but I am a capitalist, a business owner in the private sector and the free market. I do not need the big govt to make a living.

Yes, it does but I'm living in the real world here. We have laws saying that you cannot turn away a person in need at the ER. Fine. From a business and health care access standpoint, IMO it would be cheaper to have people see a PCM for routine needs rather than go to the ER for a cold/fever or wait until that bacterial infection becomes so bad that it is an emergency. Yes, it is a "socialist" move but I support it because IMO it would save tax payer dollars over time...

Why is it ...

When anybody tries to bring some economic justice to this banana republican system the neocons have foisted upon the working class, the nimrods start screaming "SOCIALISM"? There is nothing 'Free Market" about a system that has been corrupted by extreme greed. The ill gotten money that came from the S+L bailout was used to leverage hostile takeovers where the 'conservative' economic base worked in every underhanded way possible to disenfranchise the 'liberal' economic base. Since 'liberals' are reluctant to utilize slave labor 'conservatives' gained an economic benefit by selling out their own constituants. Eventually the ethically challenged turds from both parties bobbed to the surface, where, they have been tirelessly working to increase their own personal economic power at the expense of eveyone else. These 'elitists' will continue to financially rape the rest of us until we overcome our diversions with desperation and the blood will flow. The pattern is set, the results are inevitable. It is only a matter of time.
Every system collapses in on itself if a small group of families refuse to understand that they must support the infrastructure that is supporting them also. Capitalistic, Socialistic, Communistic all break down in the same way. The only difference is how that power is gained. Through connections or exploitation of your workers.

The only vice we're allowed anymore is the one our balls are in!

As Peter Schweizer notes in his best—selling expose of liberal hypocrisy, "Do As I Say (Not As I Do)," part of the fortune of this defender of the working man is a Napa Valley vineyard worth $25 million that she owns with her husband. The vineyard produces expensive grapes for high—end wines. Napa grapes bring up to $4,000 a ton compared with $300 a ton for, say, San Joaquin grapes.

But Pelosi, winner of the 2003 Cesar Chavez award from the United Farm Workers, hires only nonunion workers and sells these grapes to nonunion wineries. [....]

Which makes Pelosi's steadfast opposition to any attempts to enhance border security and stem the flow of illegal immigration into the U.S. all the more interesting since she seems to be among those rich employers who financially benefit from a steady supply of cheap foreign labor. [....]

best-selling expose? Yeah -- it's on the REMAINDER table

the troll hang out for today..times must be hard..Is it time to rapture these fake christians yet?

As long as the dude is not

As long as the dude is not wishy washy like both Clintons, or Obamma.
Rudy or him is ok by me, and even though I disagree with Richardson, he would be the best guy for the job on the dems side.
We need to rid our country of "Clinton-Gore" samo old ass crap for years now.You libs want a change but yet we will have the same old arguments or worse if either Gore or Hillary gets in.

Time to put the past in the past, along with "Bush"
Latley Obamma is looking more black, for some reason, not his appearance but the people around him.And you can bet all that great knowledge of the constution will go by the wayside once his group influences him. ie, (we are black)
I know he doesn't think that way, but he will afterwards. The same way cheny influenced Bush.

*yawn*

So there's another eminently-unelectable PNAC wannabee with his hat in the ring.

Are we supposed to give a shit now, or after he has his ass handed to him in the primaries?

The g0p has YET to have anyone step up who has a snowball's chance in a blast furnace of getting into the Oval Office without cheating the way the Oathbreaker did.

g0p = modern-day lotus-eaters = p\/\/n3d!

So just because YOU say it's

So just because YOU say it's impossible makes it so anyone else you don't want a cheat.

your thinking rather child like, I must say.

And you

Sound dumber than a retarded 3 year old when you try to talk/type. Seriously, was there an actual SENTENCE anywhere in there?

is this the Neener Neener response?

When shall we expect the "I'm rubber, you're glue" response dumbass?

My, my, my

How SHRILL you've gotten, little troll-monkey. Still putting your fingers in your ears and yelling "NANANANANANANA I CAN'T HEAR YOU", I see.

Sticking your head in the sand doesn't make those pesky FACTS go away. Just as your precious Oathbreaker-in-Chief is soon to discover for himself, whether he (or you) like it or not.

And your inanity doesn't change the simple, stubborn, irreducible FACT that Thompson is eminently un-electable. Possibly even more so than Rudy. The g0p would have a far, far better chance of getting Isaac Kleiner elected than anyone currently saying they're running on their ticket!
