McCain's Comments on Faith and a Presidential Candidate
Contrary to Weldon Gaddy's "shock" over McCain's comments, McCain said absolutely nothing wrong in stating how he'd personally prefer a Christian President, over a Muslim one. He's in no way saying we should bar Muslims from holding such an office; he's only giving a personal preference.
And, he's absolutely right in stating this opinion. Our founding and governing philosophy is based on Judeo-Christian principles. It is not based on Muslim ones, which millions of Muslims (a significant and large minority) interpret as favoring either an authoritarian or theocratic form of government. Quite obviously, both these views are antithetical to our democracy.
Even so, it's definitely unconstitutional to bar other faiths from holding office and should remain as such. But it's not wrong in any way, shape, or form to carefully consider the views and actions of those of other faiths, especially if those faiths have a history of undemocratic behavior.
This is a paraphrase of what McCain said and proves why he and people like him are suitable for leadership, especially President. Alternatively, Gaddy's alleged "outrage" over this belief proves why he and others, who share his so-called "outrage," are unsuitable for any serious leadership, up to and including President.
