Pennslyvania GOTV Weekend Observations

By Newshoggers

By Fester:

Earlier this week I had been complaining about the low level of visible GOTV activities on the part of both campaigns.  This weekend more than made up for that.  The following are some personal observations of what I saw in Southwestern Pennsylvania as I drove to and fro.

  • Clinton caps off her SW PA campaign with a rally at Pittsburgh's Market Square starting at 11:30 today.  That is a couple of blocks from my office, so I'll probably take a long lunch and see a chunk of it.
  • Obama's campaign caps off with a rally at the Peterson Event Center tonight at 9:30.  I'll be working so I'll have to miss it.
  • In the Mon Valley, Hillary Clinton and Beth Hafer (D-candidate for PA-18) dominated the sign war and the supporters on the street corner.
  • In SE Allegheny County and NW Allegheny County, Obama dominated the signs.  In SE Allegheny County Brian Wall (D-candidate for PA-18) dominated the sign contest.
  • Ron Paul won the overall sign war.
  • Too many damn phone calls this weekend.  I got at least 10 calls, six from the Obama campaign and 4 from the Clinton campaign.  Given the nature of the messaging (reminders to vote w/polling location) I think both campaigns have me listed as a probable vote for them.  I received no real positive or negative persuasion messages.
  • Polls open at 7:00 AM tomorrow, and close at 8:00pm
  • For Allegheny County Residents, if you need to find your polling place, the Allegheny County Department of Elections has a neat little tool at their site
  • I'm sticking with my Clinton by 6 prediction, although my error band on that one is non-symetrical and skewed slightly towards a higher Clinton win.

PA Primary could lead to an Open Convention with Gore the winner

Back in Dec 07 I was predicting an open democratic convention when all so-called TV talking heads were predicting an Clintion nomination by Feb 4.

Most of the talking head idiots on TV are wrong.

First an open convention is not bad for the dems.

1) We will get top news story attention and ratings because people will have a reason to pay attention.

2) Unlike most political coverage, program content is controlled by the networks instead of the political party. Believe me, it is far more important and effective to control program content than to raise millions of dollars for much less effective30 second political ads.

3) TV talking heads that say that if the democrats delegates select someone other than Obama or Hillary then they are not respecting the will of the people that voted in the primaries. Well that silly argument fails on so many level.

First, a primary vote is not the same a general election vote.

A primary votes is another form of national polls taken overtime. Therefore, if national poll opinion shift because of new information overtime why can't democratic super delegates and regular delegates change there mind about selecting the best nominee for the party.

Wasn't those early nation polls the driving force behind the Hillary and Obama campaigns. The reason they recieved more attention in the media and was able to raise all that money. Since the people that gave hillary a 20 point lead in Nov 07 changed their minds, then you have to ask how many obama voters in the early primary states would have changed their mind if they cast their vote after the early release of Rev Wright story.

I know I wish someone would have changed my 2004 primary vote for John Kerry shortly after he wrapped of nomination and when he went soft on bush.

4)Please forget this crap about the on going primary is splitting the party apart and giving the McCain the edge. Any democratic nominee that will have problems defeating the republicans in the fall isn't worthy of the nomination considering all the real problems the republicans have dragging the GOP down. We don't need to elect another John Kerry.

Then what should Pa and Upcoming Primary votes do.

My advice to Pa Primary voters, back Hillary even if you are not happy with her, and believe me she had been one underachieving candidate, but that politics. Sometimes you have to support something that you don't like to keep the ball moving in a direction you desire.

Other states, depending on the political direction, support the trailing candidate to keep this thing going until the convention.

What is the reward, the best democratic nominee that will lead the entire party to a major victory in the fall. A nominee that is well qualified to address and solve the mess that the republicans created. My fear is that Obama another Jimmy Carter of 76. Spring media darling and fall whipping boy that will be blamed for the failures of the Nixon and Ford... like Jimmy Carter.
At least hillary will be another term for Bill clinton. If she ran on that platform instead of her weak qualifications, she would be well on to the nomination.

The right choice for the democratic party is Albert Gore!!!

He should select hillary as the running mate because if she wins PA, she is won real democratic states that will be will us in the fall.

The winning Ticket is Gore/Clinton..... this time.

The campaign slogan......Al Gore the right choice in 2000 ...even better choice in 2008!!!
