THE BIG DAY, CYCLONE FOREIGN POLICY and GITMO TRIALS

What exactly is a cyclone anyway? It’s the same as a typhoon, which is the same as a hurricane, depending on where it is in the world. Doesn’t that make sense?

Myanmar a.k.a Burma may have over 22,000 deaths from Sunday’s cyclone there. Aid is just starting to trickle in.

These massive foreign tragedies raise basic moral questions like: what is our obligation to help others, and in other countries with governments we oppose? Remember he old thought experiment: if your actions can save: 1family member, 10 neighbors, 1000 Americans or 10,000 Burmese people on the other side of the world, which would you pick?

FROM THE ENDLESS CAMPAIGN

Voting is on in North Carolina and Indiana, the biggest day of the primary left. This NY Times article lays out the different possibilities and implications for today's primaries. Conventional wisdom is that if Obama wins both Indiana and North Carolina today then it's "lights out" for Clinton, but what would different splits mean? And does she have a shot in North Carolina?

Paul Krugman says a Barack Obama ad distorts his column and should be pulled.

John McCain is launching a new initiative today to court right wing social conservatives. Guess he needs money. Or maybe now is the quiet time he can do it without being noticed. Very maverick of him.

IN THE MELANGE

A few more details are trickling out from Guantanamo Bay. The suspected terrorists there still have not seen lawyers after seven years, and although steps are being taken towards giving some of them jury trials, they will almost certainly not see a true courtroom for more than a year after Bush is out of office. Read more on the due process at Gitmo here.

Iraq and Afghanistan vet suicides may exceed actual combat deaths. Wow.

The governor of Nevada is divorcing his wife. And his wife won't move out of the Governor's mansion. It’s gonna get messy. This is exactly the issue in the divorce of NJ Governor, Jim McGreevy. His wife wants restitution for having to leave the mansion early because he came out of the closet while in office, and not after his term. The trial promises to reveal all the sordid details.

JUST BECAUSE

The Clinton-Obama rivalry may seem epic now, but the flared passions over the primary are nothing compared the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, especially for Ivonne Hernandez. The 43 year-old mother, and Yankee fan, drove her car over 200 feet of pavement to crash into a crowd of Sox fans who were mocking her team.

Check out this photo - John Kerry gets caught staring at college breasts. He's so tall he has to touch his chin to his chest to get the right angle.

And a bomb sniffing dog inspecting the press corps gear on the campaign trail peed on one reporter’s laptop bag.

And much, much more …
