The Southern Strategy: it's not just for
Republicans anymore
Dear General,
I've noticed that a lot of Republicans have been voting in the Democratic primaries lately. Rush Limbaugh is taking credit for it, claiming he's been turning out the vote for Clinton in an effort exacerbate tensions within the Democratic party. What do you think about that?
David in Deweyville
David,
That's a great
question. It allows me to write about the most exciting development in the
campaign, Sen. Clinton's decision to pander to people like me.
I hate to disagree with Rush, but I think there is a different dynamic at play here, Sen. Clinton's recent reversion to old school Democratic values--and by "old school" I mean George Wallace in 1964 Democratic values. You see, Nixon's Southern Strategy isn't just for Republicans anymore.
Finally, for the first time in over forty years, a Democratic candidate is pandering to people just like me, "cracker dads," and that's flattering as hell. If I were French, I'd even go so far as to call it "empowering."
I'm not sure what prompted her to seek the scared white man vote--I like to think she had her eureka moment while watching that scene in Blazing Saddles when the townspeople realize the sheriff is black and exclaim things like, "Oh my God! He's a Negro!"--but what ever triggered it, I'm grateful.
I no longer need to feel embarrassment when the sight of a black man makes me pee my pants in terror. I know Sen. Clinton will be right there, wiping off my bowling shoes and reminding me that she cares about "hard working white Americans" like me.
I never dreamed I'd ever say this, but she's earned my respect. And she'll continue to have it even after I cast my vote for John McCain in November.

Let's all vote for the party we hate!
I'm right there with you, General. I think we ALL should vote in the primary of the political party we absolutely despise, so they are stuck with the worst possible candidate. That way, all races (I don't mean that in a racist way, by the way) will be between child molesters and hopeless alcoholics. And like everything suggested by Rush, that will be so good for America!
Say, why doesn't Rush have a show on Air America Radio? I mean, if Your Generality is not available, of course. AAR has all these time slots open from where they've fired those horrid liberals, and I hear there's going to be a vacancy on Sundays.
