Sins

Thom, I think you're conflating two categories of sin. Mortal sins are sins that so offend God that you go tell Hell for them. They're stuff along the lines of murder, missing Mass, stealing large amounts of something,things like that. Venial sins are less egregious sins that sentence you to a stretch in purgatory before you get to heaven.
The Seven Deadly Sins are categories of sins enumerated by St. Augustine that if one falls into the habit of committing may endanger your soul. They can be Mortal or Venial depending on the extent to which they are practiced. The Deadly Sins are just lists to be memorized as part of a child's religious education. They are counterbalanced by the Seven Saving Graces.
