More Sexism At NBC

By talkleft

The victims this time were Rachel Maddow AND Hillary Clinton. The context was Obama's "inartful" use of the word "refine" regarding his Iraq policy. TChris covered that controversy. Maddow was arguing the Obama argument and Joe Scarborough was not happy about Maddow's laughing as a reaction to Joe's commentary. The result was yet another episode of sexism at NBC:

Yet more guffaws from Maddow.

MADDOW: You're so wrong, I can't even hold it together. You're so wrong.

SCARBOROUGH: You might support Obama but you've got the Clinton cackle down, Rachel. I'm proud of ya.

(Emphasis supplied.) Maddow has been silent and cowardly on the issue of sexism and misogyny at NBC and in general, so you might be tempted to feel some schadenfreude. Resist it. Sexism is wrong whenever it occurs and whomever it is directed at. NBC should suspend Scarborough for this blatant bout of sexism.

By Big Tent Democrat, speaking for me only

Not sexism, rapant conservatism

You could argue that the cackle comment is sexism, but it's been plainly clear to me for some time now that Scarborough doesn't like Rachel because she's a liberal on Air America and that her being a woman has very little to do with it. Personally, I'm more bothered by the fact that he never bothers to listen to the substance of any of her arguments and automatically disagrees with them because they're coming from her. I can believe that sexist comments get lumped in with his criticisms of her positions, but it doesn't start there. It starts with his complete intolerance of talking with someone who believes something different than he does. I saw him do the same thing on Real Time with Bill Maher when he was talking to Matt Taibbi. On some issues he can be completely rational, but there a handful where he loses all inability to do so and just lashes out in whatever area he thinks is most vulnerable because he's unable to refute the facts that oppose his shaky positions on those issues.

It's an anti-liberal bias, not an anti-female bias.
