Gretna Sheriffs Doomed Hundreds to Death and Misery on Bridge

Numerous eyewitness accounts from people trying to escape from New Orleans on foot, simply by walking across a bridge to safety in Jefferson Parish confirm; they were stopped by armed Jefferson Parish sheriffs, who threatened them with guns, fired in the direction of the crowds, and refused to allow foot traffic to cross the bridge, dooming many to death and despair. The sheriffs were afraid their suburban town would be looted if they allowed the mostly black New Orleans residents to escape to the east. The president of Jefferson Parish is Aaron Broussard.
