Politically Direct with David Bender 9-14-08
Today on Politically Direct we've hit the Trifecta with three smart guests: Time Magazine's Joe Klein, the New Yorker's Jeffrey Toobin and actor and activist Hal Sparks. They'll all be here to give us their perspective on this increasingly close presidential race and the impact that the unbearably light Sarah Palin has had on this contentious campaign. And as he does every Sunday, our friend Farron Cousins of GoLeft.TV will also be here with an important story that somehow the mainstream media just doesn't cover. All this and your calls at 866 303-2270 today on Politically Direct.
If you're a music fan and live in the San Francisco Bay area, Bear Kittay, National Director of Music for Democracy will also be calling in to tell us about their big event in Oakland this Tuesday.

THE PALIN EFFECT & HOW TO COUNTER PUNCH
SARAH PALIN IS A MARKETING STRATEGY. SHE IS LIKE THE MOOD RING AND THE PET ROCK OF THE 1970'S. IT'S SOMETHING YOU CAN'T WAIT TO GET THEN TWO DAYS AFTER YOU GET IT, YOU WISH YOU HADN'T SPENT YOUR MONEY.
IT'S WHAT IS KNOWN IN MARKETING AS A FAD. SOMETHING WITH A SHORT SHELF LIFE BUT IF MARKETED CORRECTLY CAN BE PROFITABLE IN THE SHORT RUN. THE PROBLEM FOR THE DEMOCTRATIC PARTY IS, IT A SHORT RUN TIL THE ELCTION. THIS COULD BE A WINNER FOR THE REPUBLICANS.
HERE'S WHAT I THINK THE OBAMA CAMPAIGHN SHOULD DO.
LIKE EVERY GOOD POLITICAL STRATEGY, YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO PUT IT ON A BUMPER STICKER,
IF YOU CAN'T, IT NOT A GOOD MARKETING STRATEGY.
HERE'S THE BUMPER STICKER:
McPalin = Change
ROE-V-WADE
THEN OBAMA NEEDS TO HIT THE NEWS CYCLE BY DECLARING THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT THEY WILL BE GETTING WITH HIMSELF VRS. McCain. HE THEN SHOULD ANNOUNCE WHO HIS SUPREME COURT NOMINEE WOULD BE. THEN LET THE DEBATE BEGIN. HE SHOULD CHALENGE McCain TO DO THE SAME. IF McCain IS SMART HE WONT. BUT THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT WILL HAVE THEIR HANDS TO THEIR EARS WITH EYES WIDE OPEN AND HE WILL HAVE TO RESPOND. I THINK THAT THIS IS A DEBATE THAT THE DEMS CAN WIN. OBAMA SHOULD REPEAT THIS IDEA WITH HIS ECONOMIC ADVISER AND HIS ENERY SECRETARY.
PEOPLE OFTEN SAY THAT DEMS HAVE TO GET AS NASTY AS THE REPUBLICANS IN ORDER TO WIN. I DON'T THINK THEY WIN THAT WAY. AFTER ALL YOU CAN'T OUT SLITHER A SNAKE IF YOU’RE NOT A SNAKE.
RICK FROM SAVANNAH GA.
I agree
Rick, I think you're right about both the slither and the snake, but even more important I think you're exactly correct on Obama naming names about his economic team, his energy team, even his foreign policy team. He could even talk about the kinds of people that he would put on the Court (might be tough to be more specific as it would quickly devolve into a debate about someone's qualifications). Then again, what do I know? I made it through the 70's without a pet rock (and my mood ring never worked :)
Another funny about Sarah Palin on FunnyOrDie.com
As funny as the SNL skit. Check this video out starring Gina Gershon

Polls
Hey David,
I doubt the current polls are accurate. The question would be, how are they collecting the the data? If they are getting their information via the phone, they are missing all of us who only have a cell phone and not a land line.
Ed Schultz did a town hall in Anchorage 9/13/08/to air 9/15/08
Hi,
For anyone is not aware, Air America's Ed Schultz was in Anchorage yesterday, doing a Town Hall on Sarah Palin. It will air that on the Ed Schultz Show tomorrow, 9/15/08. In Oregon, that's noon - 3 on KPOJ. Check your local schedule. This should be very interesting.
Palin looked liked a school girl trying to fake her way through an oral exam during the Charlie Gibson interview. Short short skirt first time, pants the second interview.
She and McCain have troubling character defects: impulsive, don't think things through, lie, bluster, bully and will do anything to win and are being programmed by Karl Rove and company who will run their administration. McCain has a hot temper with his finger on the red button possibly?!!!
McCain looked really angry and perturbed when he was called out for his sleasy lying campaign on the View.
It scares me to death these two clowns might be running our country!
Both McCain's Lies & Palin's Pick Is About McCain's Judgement
Whether you're talking about the selection of the Bill-Kristol-endorsed, right wing vendetta fanatic Sarah Palin -- who's okay plunging a city into debt for a grand hockey rink scheme but not okay with letting rape victims have free rape tests -- it's about John McCain.
John McCain's ability to flat-out lie this whole campaign is the story.
I'm not one of those people who stupidly believe that Mr. Keating 5 and Mr. Support Bush Jr. 90% John McCain 'used to be' Jesus H. Moderate Maverick. That's a bunch of nonsense.
Even so:
The John McCain of 1968 would be flat-out ashamed at the John McCain of 2008.
And nothing embodies that more than John McCain's ad attacking Barack Obama supporting teaching young kids how to protect themselves from sexual predators.
Even the McCain-worshiping press had to call that dishonorable and disgusting.
Need to do a better job regarding reporting about Gov. Palin
David Bender has just made some misleading statements that do not advance his cause.
Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn’t cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.
Fact-checking the Palin rumors: Many are false Factcheck.org has done some legwork on the Palin rumors flying around the Internet. Here's the start of their report, with a link to their analysis: We’ve been flooded for the past few days with queries about dubious Internet postings and mass e-mail messages making claims about McCain’s running mate, Gov. Palin. We find that many are completely false, or misleading.
She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.
She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She’s been registered as a Republican since May 1982.
Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a "courtesty" when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.
Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."
A few of these claims were included in a chain e-mail by a woman named Anne Kilkenny.
This is a bunch of GOP garbage
Palin absolutely was in the Alaskan Independence Party.
What the Palin spin-machine are claiming to suggest she wasn't in the AIP is that for those years "she was a registered Republican".
The GOP honestly thinks we're stupid enough to believe that being a registered Republican voter would somehow keep you from joining up with the AIP that all the AIP remembers the Palins as having done.
She and her husband were members and attendees of AIP, whose leader Joe Vogler so hated the USA he demanded to be buried outside it, a wish he was granted when he was murdered in 1992 in a plastic explosives deal, and Sarah Palin herself recorded the welcoming message for the AIP's 2008 convention.
But I guess if you're a Republican, it's okay that you don't believe the "United" part of "United States of America" and it's okay to flirt with separatist political parties whose leaders are killed in plastic explosives deals.
Go peddle this nonsense somewhere else.
More than just
More than just attendees.
Have you seen this video?

I think her patriotism is seriously to be questioned.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." Dwight Eisenhower
I stand corrected
Thanks, Bob on the 62% correction. I will mention it on the air right now.
the GOP Lie Machine-( a new video-cartoon )
Good show today, a lot to UN-Cover from the barage of lies coming out of the GOP Lie Machine. Their bald faced lies is one important trait we should expose. The outright lies are barely confronted. ArGGGGGGGGGGGGGGggggggg!!!
We need to be the media this time around, share info with those who will listen ( I know many are utterly brainwashed and won't listen to reason).
There needs to be an outpouring of new voters to keep the GOP from stealing yet another election. I'm doing some limited animation you-tube spots right now just to help reaching potential voters that will watch a cartoon but not much else.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you soooooo much.
This is soooooo briliiant.
It is the answer.
Palin scares me soooooo much, and McCain's health cannot be relied on.
The humor angle. Make fun of her. Take the piss out of her, as the Brits would say.
I can do it. I am sending the link below to everyone in my address book.

Alaska is like... soooooo... close to Russia... LOL :-D
This is off the subject but
This is off the subject but it's something that's been bugging me. Does anyone know the name of the song and artist that The David Bender Show often plays as their intro and when going to and from breaks? It sounds like the Eagles or maybe Crosby, Stills & Nash. Some of the lyrics are:
I will live like a free man
shake the chains from my soul
change my direction
to heal my reflection
stepping out into the cold
these are the things I would do
to help me break through
these are the things I would do
if I were you
Please help me and then procede with your GOP bashing :D
Off the subject also
Hello- huge fan of the show, although I listen on podcast because there is no Air America afilliate in my city (Milwaukee).
The song, "If I Were You" seems to be by a band named "Venice". At least, that's the version I found on iTunes.
Cool song, huh?
Another off the subject question, before we go about our business of political dissection-
anybody know where the "pretty...pretty...pretty...pretty good" quote comes from that David uses to introduce show segments?
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel complete now *sighs* Yeah, I finally got to hear the whole thing! And yes, it is a cool song. I love it. As far as your question I don't know the source of the quote. But if I'm able to track it down I'll be sure to post it for you. Here's a "Thank You" gift:

I was underwhelmed, and a little concerned, about the choice of Biden as VP because #1 He voted for the war and #2 I just couldn't get over his seemingly racists comments. But after hearing the speech I've posted in the link I've completely made up with Joe. Before I heard the speech I was absolutely stunned by the garbage coming out of the McCain campaign, and even more so, the idiotic defense and acceptance by his supporters. I just can't understand how anyone in their right mind can still, after all of the evidence, choose to vote for McCain. It's maddening to watch. As this campaign wears on I often question whether the world has come off of it's axis. But then there are moments when a light shines through and I'm once again reassurred that up is still up and down is still down, and more importantly, that we are not all doomed to burn in the gas chambers. Biden makes the best case against McCain that I've heard thus far. We still have a shot :)
Last thing, my apologies to Politically Direct for calling it 'The David Bender show' in my earlier post. I was listening to David Bender hosting 'The Rachel Maddow Show' as I was typing that message.
Council for National Policy (CNP)
I've very much wanted to hear David Bender, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann, Bill Maher, Ron Reagan, Robet Kennedy jr or Arianna Huffington speak about this secret organization. It is clear that this group set the GOP agenda years ago and that they are systematically and methodically executing their plans. In this country if you talk about a group having secret evil plans and conspiracy theories you get that "Liberal" kick me sign slapped on your back, and are then dismissed as a paranoid nut case. Bare with me as I wear my sign for a moment...
This is my theory on why things that seem kooky and outrageous somehow make sense if you keep this group in mind. Within hours after 9-11 McCain was eagerly voicing his notion that this meant we had to go to war with Iraq. He spoke with an assurance that is eery in retrospect. How did he know? Maybe because he had the inside track on the agenda that the rest of us are not privy to. Most of the stuff that has gone on during the Bush administration has been completely baffling, unless you step back and consider that perhaps it has never really been about governing. Maybe it's been about amassing power and money. The choice of Sarah Palin makes no sense. But if you can conceive of the idea that the agenda of the CNP has always been about oil, and you realize that Alaska is rich in oil, the choice makes perfect sense. I believe that Palin could have been tapped as a tool for the CNP long before McCain had a choice to make. I also believe that he may have had to sell his soul to this devil because they are his only shot at the white house.
Is this too paranoid or does it have some merit? Because the list of CNP members are kept secret we just don't know who these people are and in what way they contribute to this group's vision for themselves. When I hear people like Guilani or Leiberman saying the most ridiculous things I just think "Oh, they must be a member."
So I'll put it to you Air America community: Should we be afraid of what we don't know?
Here's the wikipedia on the organization for anyone who doesn't know:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_for_National_Policy
the simple answer
Dear Laaleelaalee,
with or without secret societies like CNP, or the Bilderbergers or whatever, there are still 800 million good reasons to do everything we can to get Obama into the White House. What we need to be doing is clear, the fact that we don't know some details should not distract us.
Similarly, plus or minus a few bridges to nowhere, Caribou Barbie is in no way fit to be the most powerful person in the world. What we need to be doing is clear, the fact that we don't know some details like CNP or Bilderbergers or whatever, should not distract us.
children understand politics
"Daddy, does 'thanks, but no thanks' really mean 'gimme da money!!' ???"
I guess he's been listening to Palin
Global warming??
Just God huggin us closer!! :-)
Ruminations
A year ago, I still had enough respect for McCain to hope for him to win the Republican primary... I have lost all of that respect since then... he is pathetic, He is a pathetic old man, who has lost it, he is tired. His judgment is horrid, and he is consumed by him ambition. At 72 this is clearly his last shot, and he is biting and clawing, soon he'll be doing a striptease just to get people at his rallies... he regularly speaks to crowds of under 100 people. He is desperate. At least Bob Dole maintained his dignity, but choosing PitBull Palin who is scared shitless of journalist, has no knowledge of anything, let's her First-Dude husband run the show... McCain met Caribou Barbie once and shook her hand... they became "soulmates" that day I guess... Nobody would go to a movie like this, they would all say it is absurd and nothing like this ever happens in reality...
Let's sing... "bomb bomb bomb... bomb bomb Iran..."
tested
Experience? Tried and Tested? Executive what?
Well, Obama has been tested. He went up against Bill O'Reilly. He faced tough questions from a hostile media and he did fine. He has met the challenge. He has proven that he has the knowledge to make good decisions in the White House. He went to Rick Warren's church and answered those questions on TV from the Christian Fundamentalists.
What about Palin? Is Palin afraid to go on the Rachel Maddow show? Is she too chicken-shit to face Keith Olberman? She doesn't have the balls, does she? or does she have the balls, but not the knowledge? Let's see Palin tested the way Obama has been. Come on Sarah.... Call up Olberman Today!
apology
Sorry 'bout the strong language. I meant to say "Fraidy-Cat Barbie" not "Poultry-Excrement Palin"
Sorry again... a more civilized and consice version :-)
John McCain does not trust Sarah Palin to go in front of reporters and answer questions… yet he trusts her to take over the most important job in the world should something happen to him?!?!?!?!?!
Republican McCain is Pathetic.
Supreme Court and the real issue
Yesterday I made the largest campaign contribution of my life. ... Palin has really energized me.
It is, kids, quite possible that the next president will nominate 3 supreme courts justices... McCain is too old and too weary [during this campaign 47-year-old Obama has gone grey]... at 72 McCain will be dead very soon... campaigning is too hard.
We must think and discuss these things as if Palin will be the next president.
Forget Roe v Wade for a minute... and think about election chaos.... Dubya needed Florida, so some Republican officials in Florida created enough confusion, then refused to do a recount, then went to court to sue to stop a recount... and the US Supreme court in the end said "Well, there ain't enough time fer a recount anyway, the principle of the Electoral College meeting on Wednesday is much more important than some stupid old 'count every vote' ".... What is to stop that same scenario happening in every election for the next 20 or 30 years??? Democrats on the Supreme Court. and we will never get them with a President and First Dude Palin.
oil dependence
"Alaska's oil can help us out until we get there"...
Well not very much. Opening up all US land to oil exploration may in 15 or 20 years result in a 1% [one percent] increase in global oil production [These are Bush Administration figures, not mine] The USA consumes 22 percent of global oil production. So even in your best case scenario and all other factors remaining steady [like the Chinese and Indian economies not growing, which will NOT happen] you could see a 1 percent fall in the price of home heating oil within 15 years. Yeah!!!
Sound like a solution??
but if you meet a member of the wackoright, or an independent who lives nearby... remind him that Jimmy Carter had a program to convert 20percent of America's energy production to solar by the year 2000... Reagan trashed that program.
Where would we be now, if we had listened to progressive Democrats back then?
John Anderson (also a bit of a progressive) proposed a 50cent per gallon gas tax in the early eighties... a burden on drivers to be sure, but also a huge motivation to conserve and or build better more efficient cars (this strategy has worked well all over Europe by the way)... Al Gore even supported the project at one time... though he had to give it up because the ME-Gerneration just wanted low prices and didn't give a damn about the future...
So, we're dependent on foreign oil. Ronald Reagan shares a large part of the blame.
Loved hearing Hal Sparks
Loved hearing Hal Sparks again - please have him on more often - I really enjoy his smarts & funny = )
McCain/Bush
despite trying to assume the change mantle, there's still no doubt where McCain got his policies:
